'Beauty and the Beast' star Josh Gad wants to play The Penguin

Last month a fan on Twitter asked Beauty and the Beast star Josh Gad what his dream role would be. Gad's reply? "Penguin in Batman or anything in Star Wars".

That tweet seemed to slide under the radar, but on Tuesday fans definitely noticed another Batman related tweet. Gad posted a picture of The Penguin. No comment, just a picture of The Penguin.

Immediately my Twitter timeline and email inbox was filled with "Has Josh Gad been cast as The Penguin?!" messages. Probably not. Unless you're The Rock, actors aren't usually allowed to reveal information like that before an official announcement from the studio.

We've seen this many times before, actors will campaign for a role and try to get fan interest in the hopes that they do actually land the role that they want. And in this case, we know that The Penguin would be a dream come true for Gad.

After seeing War Dogs, Jonah Hill is my top choice for The Penguin.

  I think Penguin is a tough character to translate to live action. Danny DeVito was a perfect person to play the role and I want thrilled with that version, either

    I wasn't thrilled with it either but I think because burton kinda went literall with the "penguin", like he always does. But I'd like to see a penguin that's not so "penguin", if that makes sense;)

  He's not bad, he's pretty average in terms of professional acting. However I absolutely agree that he's not a good choice. He really doesn't look like he'd fit into this world.

      The damaged tattoo that you mentioned is not the hand tattoo. The hand tattoo was used in the acting, but the other wasn't.
      Any other actor would have that tattoo. It was a director's decision.

        You changed your mind once you saw the damaged tatoo. Any other actor chosen to suicide squad would have damaged written on his forehead.
        I think that his acting was quite faithfull to the Joker.

        I also think that Jared Leto Joker was the most faithful! He was the best Joker. He was bloody funny and scary at the same time, even with so little time on screen. I wish we had more of him!

        Yah, I wished I had seen more of all characters. Suicide Squad is a film about a team just like the Guardians of the Galaxy and most of them had little screen time and had no stand out scenes unlike Guardians of the Galaxy whose main character was obviously Peter Quill followed by Gamora, but all the other members had much more screen time and their stand out moments.

        If they hadn't wasted too much time on Deadshot and Harley, maybe the others could have had a chance.
        Besides, why not put the deleted scenes of the other members on the DVD/ Blu-ray since they had so little time? They were also part of team and the actors spend six months on the set, not just a few days.
        But even in the DVD, they still gave more screentime to Harley and Deadshot and they already had so much screen time on the film.

        I’m just responding to your first comment where you just referred to the tattoo (not the overacting thing) and that cannot be considered an acting problem because any other actor would have that same tattoo on his forehead.
        I agree! Extreme, crazy and overacting. That's the Joker.That's where Jared nailed the role perfectly.! He is a crazy clown, a showman who is always performing in a stand-up comedy show.
        What is bad for you, it is very good for me. He could not please everybody so I’m glad he pleased me!
        What could have been better was him having more extensive scenes connected with one another and having that scene where he antagonizes the squad, but that is not in the control of the actor.
        Why didn’t they put the scenes in the DVD? At least as deleted scenes? I’m sure they had more footage, not only of the Joker who just had two minutes more but also the other suicide squad members who had almost no screen time. Yah, the film is about the team Task Force X, so all of the members of the squad should have had at least half of the screen time that Deadshot and Harley had.
        All actors were on the set for six months, so I guess they filmed much more than what was showed.
        Actually, I loved his voice. It was a mix of Hamill and Ledger.
        He didn't send used condoms. He sent condoms out of the involucre that look just like balloons. The director explained that in an interview. Clown - ballons.

I personally would like to see an old and decrepit Penguin who is pretty much unable to walk from years of Batman and Batfamily beatdowns. Real old and nasty. A lot like Danny Devitos but much more menacing, an English accent and able to be a threat just as a Kingpin who is getting fatter and more unhealthy each day by not moving and eating fish in the iceberg lounge.

  I like that a lot actually. And makes sense seeing that Batman is in his 40s. Although, I prefer the penguin with an old school Brooklyn accent. The only problem with this "seasoned" Batman is that we're missing out on originating and developing characters. We just have to think, " oh there's the joker, he's been around for awhile ". I would like to see Batman meeting the penguin for the first time. Actually, why can't we introduce someone like the penguin now in Batmans later years? Why stay sooo canon to the comics? I'd like to see them surprise us to be honest.

Can't think of an actor with a similar body but someone like Danny Devito is what I want for the DCEU. He needs to be grotesque an ugly man that runs gothams underworld who eats whole raw fish. I like Robin Lord Taylor's portrayal I just prefer Danny Devito as the Penguin looks like he belongs in the comics.

  Bishōnen Penuin from Gotham ended up being the best thing on the show, especially as he finally completed his transformation this week and hacked a fool to death.
  The DCEU should obviously go the other way but we don´t need the back tar mutant from Returns either, even if he was the best thing in the film.

I don't know if he will play Penguin, it could be for the animated movie Batman and Harley Quinn.
I'm not really familiar with him but his voice doesn't seem how I picture Penguin sounding. Though I always picture the voice of Penguin as some combination of Danny Devito and Nolan North's portrayal of Penguin in the Arkham games.

Nah, I'd rather have a serious portrayal of the character as opposed to a chubby man with a pointy noise. Don't get me wrong, I like Josh Gad, but I feel we need someone much more menacing and more of an asshole be Penguin so we can actually take the character seriously.

Why does the internet have to ignore proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling? It's the most widely used method of communication and accessing information on the planet. I feel like keeping languages intact is really important because of that fact.

  The internet is filled with people from all over the globe with lots of people speaking a second language such as myself. It's quite ignorant to just assume that everyone knows perfect english, it takes years to learn and even then you still occasionally mess up as you mix things up with your other language.

        I would. But my bluntness can be, understandably, off-putting. I really don't try to be rude, but it comes off that way from time to time.
        And, to be honest, typed/written word is, to me, a much easier way of conveying succinct thoughts and opinions - and in this case, corrections - without any awkward in-person interactions.
