on 'Wonder Woman' director Patty Jenkins reveals her plans for a sequel

Wonder Woman takes place in Themyscira and London, and director Patty Jenkins already has an idea in mind for a sequel. She wants to bring Wonder Woman to America.

“I’m excited for her to come to America and become the Wonder Woman we are all familiar with from having grown up around her as an American superhero,” Jenkins told the Toronto Sun. “I’d like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing. Wonder Woman 1 is so much about her becoming the person she is. I can’t wait to spring forward with who she is and have another great standalone superhero film.”

If Wonder Woman does as well at the box office as fans are expecting, it may not be long until we get an official announcement about Wonder Woman 2.

To have Patty Jenkins THIS committed to already wanting to do a sequel is such a good sign. She must've had almost total control creatively for the movie, and this also bodes well for the working relationship between WB and its directors. This movie truly feels like WB and the DCEU are getting on the right track. I am beyond excited for this film!

She has... but if we choose to believe the rumors, she wanted to take the WW movie into a completely different, as in weirdly meta, direction (talking tigers and whatnot). I'm actually glad they opted for a more grounded take. Plus, Monster (Patty's first movie) was freaking great. So it's a win in my book.

If the idea for the character strongly disagrees with who the character is, that is reason justified for dropping her/her leaving. It doesn't contradict anything, maybe McLaren's vision for the character was so far off base that it couldn't be considered. We don't know.

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar

Sure, but the truth is you never get complete creative control over movies that are set in shared universes. I mean, Wonder Woman has been set up as having forsaken humanity after World War I. That's something that cannot be changed, regardless of what the director/writer wants to do with her story that's set up in that time. Regardless of what happens in this movie, by the end she will have given up her role as a protector.

            SBHMreplying to OGmacrazy

Sure. I don't see how that helps your statement. They story can still be told how the director sees fit. It just has to agree with the overall vision. That doesn't mean it's black and white and any director can film it.

I agree, I mean, in a way, you just have to be exhausted (in her position now) after cutting the movie, doing the effects and scores, but shes talking sequel??? Wasn't the case with the likes of Affleck, Keaton or Ledger, why would it be with Gadot if she is great in the role? Unless you mean a very small minority that may have also not liked these examples, which is obviously always going to happen, and in which case it becomes irrelevant.

What makes Cheetah a great adversary for WW? To me, she doesn't pose much of a threat since WW outclasses her in every way. At least with Lex, he has genius intellect and Kryptonite to combat Supes.

        Wazzapova

I agree with you, but I just think it would be cool to see Cheetah on screen since she also dates back to the Golden Age of comics and they have been battling ever since. It looks like Dr. Poison (also from the Golden Age) is in 'Wonder Woman' and it would seem WW outclasses her in every way too. Let's see what these villainesses have in store for WW!

Depends what interpretation of Cheetah they use. In the comics, Cheetah's reflexes are way faster than WW's, sometimes on par with the Flash (obviously not when he's at top speed), has super strength, and is a good foil to WW's fighting style, as WW's style is disciplined and graceful, while Cheetah's is wild and erratic. Also, Cheetah's origin is really compelling, she's like WW's Two-Face.

Personally, I think they should go for the Cheetah that is currently in DC Rebirth. Her story is incredible and heart braking, as well as the design is the best Cheetah design I've ever seen imo.

        1. Schuyler Finley Avatar
          Schuyler Finley

Really? Since WW is one level below Superman, I always assumed that Cheetah should not be challenging for her unless the writer de-powers her.

Writer's usually de-power Cheetah, who knows why. Cheetah herself is a demigoddess, like WW, however instead of her powers being a gift like WW's, hers are a curse.

Diana threw Artemis though multiple skyscrapers and this goes on for pages! Geoff Johns´ (N52) Superman did same with his aggressors (as Green Lantern + Batman). How come Snyder´s Superman is somehow not a hero, for being perceived to do this same, despite never have done such an act?

    1. OGmacrazy Avatar
      OGmacrazy

Yeah, you really don't want to use the new 52 Superman as an example for this. It doesn't help your argument in any way.
      Also, maybe because:
      a)movies have a much bigger audience than comic books ever had or ever will, therefore it will have more complaints of that nature;
      b) audiences weren't really ready for the third act of a superman movie to be mostly destruction porn, and headache inducing loud noises and action.
I love Man of Steel, a lot more than most, but the third act could have been handled in a much better way.
Also, "despite never have done such an act"?
      Memory troubles?
      https://i.makeagif.com/medi...
(also, don't forget right after this when he plows through a gas station in the middle of the day)...

Frankly, I think Man of Steel was unfairly criticized in this regard, when it's problems were elsewhere (bad directing and weak as fuck screenplay), but it is understandable, at least. Let's not pretend all of that destruction was done tastefully.

"Yeah, you really don't want to use the new 52 Superman as an example for this. It doesn't help your argument in any way."

Why not? Just because YOU didn't like the New 52 doesn't mean it can't be used as a reference to state how a character has developed over time
Also, both of your points are utter trash.
Because of Reeve's Superman films, even people who don't read comics think they know what Superman should be like. Superman originated in the comics and has developed over time through the comics. They are the reference for this or any CB character. So if those Christopher Reeves fanboys say "Superman doesn't kill!", they're wrong irrespective of whether or not they're a majority. Period.

"audiences weren't really ready for the third act of a superman movie to be mostly destruction porn"

Considering the trailers showcased a lot of that "destruction porn", they would have been ready for it. The problem is they blamed Superman for it even though he didn't cause 'destruction porn in the third act'. Plenty of Superhero movies have destruction porn and no one bats an eye.

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

I'm not even going to bother replying to that second paragraph since you've completely made up an argument that I never used just so you could take that "counter-argument" out of your system. Sorry, but that shit don't really fly, brother.
Also, to answer the new 52 superman part, he was a terrible character in the new 52, with barely any development or depth whatsoever. So bad and unpopular, in fact, they killed him off and brought the previous version to the limelight, once again.
Also, even though the trailers did show some of it, it really wasn't the focus there, and it really didn't prepare people for a whole third act of a city being destroyed to ashes. As I've said before, in this very same comment chain, Man of Steel did get some unfair criticism in this regard, especially since it's main problems were elsewhere, but I'm going to repeat myself, since you so cleverly dodged my point: was that destruction done tastefully and was it well executed? Sorry, but it really wasn't. Some of it was to be expected and it's not like some destruction is not to be expected when two beings of this nature are fighting, but Snyder went full Michael Bay with that fight, and you never go full Michael Bay.

            Akil Manazreplying to OGmacrazy

You're going to skip that second para because you don't have any response to it. I don't even know what 'counter-argument' you're talking about but you were referring to the fact that most people don't read comics and will complain (because they think they know the character). That still makes them wrong.

What you thought of the New 52 Superman is your opinion. Period. Besides, the early version of Superman was a dick and the DCEU Superman is nowhere close to that.

"Also, even though the trailers did show some of it, it really wasn't the focus there"
Woaah, wait, are you seriously suggesting "The destruction of metropolis" could/should have been the focus in a Superman reboot movie trailer? WTF.

"and it really didn't prepare people for a whole third act of a city being destroyed to ashes."
Except MoS didn't feature Metropolis "being destroyed to ashes". Did you even watch the movie? The world engine levelled a few blocks, and then there was some random damage here and there from Zod's fight.

I commented on your two meaningless points, don't care what YOU thought of the script/screenplay. Most people and critics who have complain about say "Superman didn't save anyone!" or "Superman destroyed Metropolis!" both of which are false.

          2. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to Akil Manaz

I simply do not respond to made up arguments that are not the point of the discussion. It simply shows desperation and lack of basic debating skills on your part.
It's not about not reading comic books and thinking they know the characters. Comic books are irrelevant to a movie's quality, and Man of Steel's criticisms aren't solely exclusive to how people feel Superman should be. That's your entire mistake. You are ASSUMING that is the whole criticism of the movie, when it really fucking isn't, which is hypocritical and wrong. You're doing exactly what you're accusing others of doing.
Also, how the fuck did I ever suggest the destruction should have been the focus of the trailers? I know you're a bit of a triggered character around these parts and it's difficult to take you seriously as is, but are you trolling or is your reading ability that diminished? I simply said that the destruction of metropolis was never the focus of the trailers, and the battle only showed up briefly during the trailers, so it was fair for people to not really expect so much in the final act. Is that clear enough for you?
""Also, even though the trailers did show some of it, it really wasn't the focus there"
Woaah, wait, are you seriously suggesting "The destruction of metropolis" could/should have been the focus in a Superman reboot movie trailer? WTF.
"and it really didn't prepare people for a whole third act of a city being destroyed to ashes."" - I fucking love this. You stop in the middle of the fucking sentence, comment on it, which is always wrong since it's taken out of context, and then comment on the rest of the phrase. Nice one, dude. It really makes you look great in the middle of this discussion. If one's IQ is under 70, that is.
Also, your last statement is completely false and makes you look as biased as you accuse critics of being. But I guess your world must be so small that you actually think DC is hated by the media, especially Man of Steel, a movie that came out 1 year after TDKR, the best reviewed super hero movie since The Dark Knight. Please, keep going. I love this. It's so fucking easy just applying simple logic and basic common sense in these discussions.

Anyone else thinks feminism could help this film? I mean:

-Lead character is a woman and a feminine icon
    -It's directed by woman

Since feminism is more vocal than ever I think the movie might be seen with different eyes. Not saying it won't be good, I hope it is, but I think critics will be a lot more hesitant to trash this movie than any other DCEU movie.

I mean Ghostbusters was poorly received by the audience and it is certified fresh on RT.

    This movie looks great though.

Stupid* feminists (majority nowadays) that don't even know what feminism actually means. That's why I think it should just be called "gender equality" instead of feminism so it would stop generating so much stupidity and embarrassment from both sides.

Please bring Circe and Medusa. I see this story for the sequel:

Diana moves to Washington DC in order to work at CIA and get to know the hidden to-the-public threats the world has, when she receives a message from Hyppolitah requesting her presence and help at Themyscira because it's being under attack of Medusa and Circe. She travels back home to fight those enemies and that war lasts years, and that is why she left mankind alone for a 100 years 😀

But there is a rumor which is supported by the scene in BvS when Bruce meets her for the second time at that party talking about a false sword that in the exhibition, that shes dealing in the antiques, thats her passion. Liking that aspect of her very much.

This is just me, but I think people are just familiar with this characters, overall movie going audience, they have a sort of "look" in their heads about these characters, and that hurts when you go in a different direction. Because, CAmerica, Iron man, they are all "B characters", not that familiar with people, so by the beginning you can shape them as you want. This are comic book titans, all I have to say, chill, let the characters evolve, he was 2 days supermen in MoS, let the evolve to those incarnations that you like. For me, 2\3 movies, and going very strong.

          4. Valid Avatar
            Validreplying to Bat

point. When I come across criticism like "this isn't my Superman," the close-mindedness irks me, but a tiny part of me does acknowledge the importance Superman holds for the "troll." In the short term, it's damaging, nevertheless.

          5. Bat Avatar
            Batreplying to Valid

Agree. But when it comes to "their Supermen" they could start appreciating the overall ark that led to that. I think this movies, this 2 so far will be looked differently when there are movies that came to that "overall notion of this characters" (overall acceptance for a lack of a better word)

Introduce Donna Troy as an Amazon initiate and have her and Diana go on a globe-trotting adventure with Cheetah as the primary villain.

Maybe even have a short scene where they tour the Hall of Justice with notable cameos from the League members. Diana needs to use the Hall's computer to track down Cheetah but forbids her friends from helping them because the entire exercise of hunting down Cheetah is a rite of passage for Donna.

Diana and Donna prevail and the rite of passage worked two-fold: Donna becomes an official Amazon warrior but ALSO is inducted into a Junior Justice League program called "Titans". Donna joins that team for a future movie.

One option to pitch: Diana is under oath to protect a young single mother and baby from the demons and assassins of an angry god/goddess/sorceress. The twist is the baby has a connection to Zeus.

They can tie Diana's job as an arts dealer with Minerva/Cheetah's origin as an archeologist. And a vengeful Cheetah could strike a deal with the main villain (Hera or Circe perhaps).
