'Justice League' actor: The movie has humor, but the opening scene is "pretty dark"

Red Carpet News TV caught up with Game of Thrones actor Michael McElhatton about his role in Justice League. McElhatton couldn't talk about who he was playing, but he did talk a bit about the movie.

When asked if the trailers are a good representation of what fans can expect in the final movie, McElhatton replied that there's going to be "a lot more humor" in Justice League than there was in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Don't expect a comedy, though. McElhatton says he played a role in the movie's opening scene, and it was "pretty dark".

"I found that the scene I did, which is a big opening scene, was pretty dark in its tone. But in a good way. It wasn't comic booky, but I think you can thread a certain amount of humor through it, which maybe the previous one was lacking," McElhatton said.

McElhatton went on to praise Justice League director Zack Snyder. Check out the full video interview below.

    I've never heard of him either. I've never seen Game of Thrones. A lot of people on the internet act like everyone's lives revolve around entertainment, so I appreciate it! I'm only interested in Batman. Breaking Bad was the only mega popular show I got into and I caught it at the last season like a lot of folks.

  What worries me about the JL trailer is that it looks too jokey and had none of the gravitas of the MoS or BvS trailers. It looked almost like a Transformers movie... which I'm a bit weary about.

    That's because WB is soooo reactionary and this is their way to calm the anti-Snyder base and demonstrate that the "tone" will be different. They are just playing politics because of the divisiveness of BvS and MOS. I'm personally not worried I'll be watching JL opening night whether I'll like it or not remains to be determined.

      I've been waiting for a JL movie my entire life. I JUST WISH that Larry Fong had been able to lens the movie. The current cinematographer got popular from Game of Thrones. I just hope the movie is good. Matrix 2 destroyed me. Episode 1 destroyed me. Green Lantern destroyed me. I can't let JL destroy me, too.

pretty sure the complaints of dark are about color correction and filtering light, not about tone.

    they just didn't want Batman killing as much as he did probably. I don't think people had problems with the tone per se. And I've seen hours of video reviews by a lot of people. Never has anybody complained about it being a dark movie. It's just the killing

      That's odd. I've seen several complaints that the movies tone was too dark. Batman's killing contributed to that tone along with Superman not being shown as the great white hope that everyone thinks he needs to be because of Christopher Reeves campy 70s films.

        Maybe to the fans it wasn't like that (the vids I've watched are always die hard fans) but maybe to the average audience and the critics who don't know a lot about comics it was too dark.
        Damn, we'll see what happens. I don't mind if there's humor, it just has to be done properly. Flash and Cyborg should carry the humor but from what I've seen, they are making batman some kind of Tony Stark cracking up one liners and being the humorous rich guy.
        I know people love the line "I'm Rich" but that's something Tony would say, not Bruce. Bruce would not even say anything and just smile. Or he could say "I'm obsessive" if you want a joke but he would never say his superpower is money

        Yes I think it was very much so general audience aka critics. And yea I think just judging from the trailer and tease so far, Bruces one liners might be a bit much. But I'll wait for the movie to completely judge that aspect. To a degree Bruce has always had these dry humor jokes and quips much like in BTAS so we'll see how it does in JL.

        like I said, never read any critic's reviews. But I never saw a fan complaining about the tone. just my experience.
        Bruce would joke about his money in a different context but I just can't see him saying that's his super power.

        The style of humor does not appear to be similar though. Batman rolling his eyes and grumbling after being one-upped by Aquaman is not a Tony Stark style joke. Tony Stark would have tried to one-up Aquaman with another insult. We've seen him do this before. Batman saying "I'm rich" is succinct and matter of fact. Tony Stark would have taken the time to list off all of his attributes and accomplishments. We've seen him do this before too. Tony Stark's humor tends to stem from a place of arrogance and narcissism. Hard to make a definitive statement on what Batman's style of humor will be but from the bits in the trailer I think it appears to be more dry.

    My first screening of BvS WAS too dark. The guy running the projector didn't know what he was doing, then he fixed it and the movie looked great.

Unless this is really REALLY good (which let's be honest, won't be the case), Zack Snyder needs to get the boot. He can't keep hurting the DC brand anymore. These movies and characters should be universally embraced. They are the most iconic superheros in the world.

        Zack Snyder is not the source of the problem. Marvel hires directors with sh*tty track records all the time. The difference? They are watched closely from above. Feige is said to be a good storty teller, so it's no surprise Marvel movies, even if not great, still work. They also do test screenings all the time.
        WB on the other hand hired Zack Snyder and gave him full freedom. Want a director-oriented universe? then hire top notch directors, otherwise your movies are going to end up being just as good as the directors. Want to hire mediocre directors? Then you better have good eyes above watching them.
        It's so simple and obvious, yet WB don't seem to grasp it. They have been so incompetent it's mind boggling.

        Watchmen is the single best comic book movie in your opinion. The movie didn't get nearly as panned as BvS did because BvS deserves it. People don't just want happy go lucky films. They want movies with a coherent story, sensible character development and good fucking characters. I don't want DC to copy Marvel. I hate the Marvel formula. But I want a good film. Man of Steel is a good film. BvS is a dog shit film.

        I was fine with Batman and Luthor being in the film. I hated Luthor's portrayal but I don't mind him being in the film. Batman was fine .The problem is you have source material to work with. Why the fuck would you make Luthor have the most over convoluted stupid plan in addition to making him into the damn Joker. Superman in Man of Steel wasn't the classic campy Superman but it worked because he made sense. Having Superman mimic Batman's broodiness and his darkness does not fucking work. His story was compelling in MoS. The critics hate it because it's incoherent over convoluted and plain stupid. It's a beautiful mess. A stylish film with not substance to it's story. If you actually think Doomsday was done justice with his portrayal. The problem's with you. When your in the overwhelming minority, everyone else isn't wrong.

        The fact that you used Box office gross earlier as a factor to determine the quality of a movie goes to show you have no idea what you're talking about. I bet you enjoy watching those Transformers flicks.
        That its DVD/Blu ray sale was huge shows how many people loved the movie to want to buy it (this is on par with Civil War btw).
        And even if you take the audience score from RT, 63% is a majority. You're in the minority any way you look at it.

        First people complain that Lex acted like the Riddler, and now it's that he acted like Joker? I don't think you know the difference between these characters. Lex wasn't acting like a raving lunatic. Him making noise does not automatically make him act similar to the Joker. He never kept talking about how he's the intellectual superior like how the Riddler never shuts up about. The man was an evil genius, and nearly won if he hadn't gotten too curious and fucked up his own plan. "But Lex isn't supposed to be a mad scientist". But he used to be a mad scientist, and he still kinda is.
        Superman is on his own. They were showing how realistic a person would act like when having that kind of responsibility on their shoulders. If you can't comprehend that having that kind of responsibility will make ANYONE not happy all the time, then that's on YOU. Even in the comics, Superman does brood a bit when he thinks about Krypton. And again, Snyder and Terrio told us before the film was released that BvS would be darkest of the trilogy. But it seems that folks still can't comprehend because "My Superman shouldn't be dark. He should be shitting out rainbows out of his ass as if he's in My Little Pony".
        DD is a plot device. He would never work in a 60+ minute solo film. Even the animated movie couldn't "do him justice". They had to use a clone Superman as the final villain because DD died at the halfway mark.. BvS was the best DD could've been used. He's a blank slate. Godzilla can handle a solo film better than he can.

        Good perceived quality helps you to have legs.
        A perfect example is BvS. Biggest opening ever for a CBM, and then had the biggest drop ever.

        Fanboys on the other will defend every single flaw the movie has, they will try to justify every single creative decision, if something doesn't add up they will fill the gaps with their own reasoning and overall they will just dismiss any criticism.

        I don't see how that makes me a fanboy. I said that I don't consider BvS a perfect film. If I was a fanboy then I would say that BvS has no flaws. I said that I hated MoS, but my opinions about it changed. That doesn't make me a fanboy. I even said that SS is a decent mess. That doesn't make me a fanboy.

        Sorry, and I don't always agree with his approach, but he does have a point. In a DC focused website, where generally the most positive and sometimes fanboy-ish comments get the most upvotes, why would he ever then say negative/non-positive things or take a negative/non-positive stance towards the DCEU in this website? If it were for the upvotes, then he'd be repeating what many other people do here like "OMG, it's going to be off the hook! Thanks Daddy Snyder" or something along these lines.

    I think it's pretty much a fact that Zack Snyder has hurt the DC brand with 2 poorly received movies.
    It's pretty evident when you look at all the media and people talking about DC anywhere.
    DC is right now the laughing stock of CBM's and it's a shame, because it was once all the opposite.

    Terrio mainly rewrote dialogue which was generally a massive improvement over MoS. I don't think there was much he could do to save the clunky story.
    MoS had a great story though thanks to Nolan handholding Goyer like with TDK.

    BvS theatrical cut had flaws. Its no doubt. 63% rating is because of these flaws:
    1. Superman killed terrorist during desert scene. Not required.
    2. How did Lex turned into jail?? Theatrical fail.
    3. At the end, Lex knows about DING sound, HOW?? Same as above reason.
    I am a Hardcore Moviegoer. I dont watch films for its action or its joke or either its marvel or DC. I watch films how its represented?? What do they offer us for entertainment?? Whats the idea?? Whats the plot?? How its visuals?? Soundtrack?? Whats new in it??

    And here we are talking about BvS poor show which is not actually.

  Terrio specifically mentioned the Amazons vs Atlantis battles in mythology as part of his prep, so I'm with you (although it definitely looks like Darkseid's minions also made the party). Getting the Mother Boxes initially, though... could we potentially see Highfather in this film? Lightray? Metron? (I doubt the latter; he's too busy studying to interfere.) Darkseid and Apokolips get plenty of workouts in media; New Genesis, not so much.

    DoYouFeelInCharge is right. This was already confirmed as a team up between the three races against Darksied and it serves as an origins of how the three mother boxes for each race are distributed. In the comic con footage we see the humans just decide to bury the box(which is stupid as hell). That's the one inside of Cyborg most likely. We may have also gotten a look at the Atlantean one in trailer during the Mera shot.

JLA won´t get glowing reviews either, end of story. The gritty opening battle sound pretty... fun though.
Will the opening feature Darkseid though and who is McElhatton playing, if he is involved. I can´t quite see him as Darkseid but reddit sure is eager to fan-cast him. His voice would be a good fit. Hm.

I don't care at this point if the opening is dark or not, or if it has comedy. Just make the films hopeful and triumphant and I think most will be happy. I'm not asking for comedy at all. I'm asking to be dark, but have enough balance that in the end, everyone enjoys watching it and appreciating it. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Tim Burton's first Batman movie (Batman Returns did not do this), and to a lesser extent the first two Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner Superman movies all succeeded in making the films triumphant without having too much dark stuff (but still being dark) or too much comedy (but still having it).
I feel that is what the DCEU has been lacking (well, that and some bad writing and execution with a lot of the characters and some other problems). Good news is, Wonder Woman does look like it will do this, Justice League not so much. Only time will tell.

  Not necessarily, but it does help. An example of a movie not having a "happy" ending but still fitting this criteria is The Dark Knight. The ending is not depressing so to speak, but it does not exactly end too happily either (With Harvey Dent dying and Batman going into retirement and all that). But even then, it was still triumphant and done so well it blows me away every time.
  Having hopeful motifs and themes and DOING THEM WELL (Man of Steel tried to do these themes, but didn't balance or execute all that well) I think is more important.

I don't care if it's got humour or not. I don't read Batman and JL comics for the laughs, I read them because I enjoy a good story. A witty line or a funny interaction is fine for a couple of laughs, but they don't need to go the Marvel rout either.
