'Batman and Harley Quinn' is written by Bruce Timm

Yesterday we learned that The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch would voice Harley Quinn in DC's next animated movie, Batman and Harley Quinn, and today Collider has more details about the project.

We knew from the first image that Batman and Harley Quinn would feature the animation style of Batman: The Animated Series, and now we know why. Its creator, Bruce Timm, came up with the story for Batman and Harley Quinn and wrote the script along with Jim Krieg. Timm is also serving as an executive producer with Sam Register.

Sam Liu is directing Batman and Harley Quinn, and the animated movie will be out this summer. Stay tuned to Batman News for more info as we get it.

Voice is decent for not being Tara or Arleen. Yeah it's another Bruce Timm sex scene most likely and honestly 1 scene in a movie even an animated movie won't ruin the entire movie for me. I'm in the minority with the Killing Joke for what it is i enjoyed it yeah the Batgirl feminism stuff was a bit on the nose and the sex scene was a bit cringey but again 1 scene won't ruin a movie for me. Watching Teen Titans Judas Contract right now so far so good my only wish for animated movies going forward is to use Rebirth stories as soon as possible.

I think Timm is overrated. I think he does good work when he collaborates with the right people, but when he is given too much control I feel his work comes off as fan fiction. I think Timm gets more credit than he deserves for TAS being good, since there were people like Paul Dini around influencing the show as well.

well I know BTAS is insanely popular but it was never for me. I just dont like the animation style at all. Also always disliked how much toned down the BTAS universe was. It was very obviously always animation aimed at kids and while it did a great job with that, it was just never my kind of Batman/DC universe. as a comic book reader first and foremost I always gravitated much more towards the more faithful and adult-oriented animation such as Under the Red Hood, Dark Knight Returns, Wonder Woman, Flashpoint Paradox, Assault on Arkham etc.

I actually really liked Killing Joke. Although the animation was flawed and obviously the Batgirl/Batman stuff was.....unusual (to put it mildly), the actual adaptation of the Killing Joke book was nearly flawless and one of the most accurate and perfect comic book adaptations I have ever seen. If you just skip the first 40 minutes and start the movie straight where the TKJ book begins then you have one of the best DC animated films ever made.

However I have been bitterly disappointed so far with the New 52 style animated universe (Does it have an official name?). Nearly all of the stories they adapted (especially JL: War and Throne of Atlantis) were incredibly toned down and inferior to the comic book arcs they were based on. And the Batman films so far (Son of Batman, Batman vs Robin) are some of the worst animated movies I have ever seen with especially Son of Batman being an insult to me as a Deathstroke fan as that movie completely butchered that character. I was apalled by that film in ways I have rarely been.

I must admit that JL vs Teen Titans and JL Dark were not as bad and have been mostly entertaining but there has not been a DC animated movie in that animated universe that has really excited me the same way as Under the Red Hood, Apocalypse, Wonder Woman or Flashpoint Paradox.

I am currently watching Judas Contract (again as a Deathstroke fan a movie that is of very special interest to me) and I am surprised how much better and more fun this movie has been so far. While I miss the Grant/Hive/Jericho subplot, the movie is adapting the story pretty well and finally Deathstroke is depicted in a much more accurate way that does him mostly justice. Especially the humor is spot on too.

So far this has definitely been an improvement from the previous films and might be the best New 52 animated movie yet.

I generally agree, minus the actual adaptation of the Killing Joke. It was "faithful" to the original book in the same way that Zack Snyder's Watchmen was "faithful" to the original work. It followed the story and panelwork, but everything it added (fight scenes, cringey dialogue with the prostitutes), or changed (the art style) just resulted in a heavily watered down piece that seemed to misunderstand what the original work had to say about the instability of the human mind. Combine that with its trainwreck of a prologue, and it comes across as Azzarello/Timm just tossing in "controversial" elements for the sake of controversy, just so the producers could market its R-rating.
The original Animated Series and Mask of the Phantasm were actually able to tackle mature themes like tragedy, toxic relationships, death, guilt, and mental instability gracefully, even while having to keep in line with its censors.

  yes the animated series tackled some mature themes but the extremely watered down tone and violence (Especially regarding someone like Joker) was a big turn off for me as comic book fan.
  Which is why I prefer Hamills Joker in Arkham much more over BTAS Joker. Because thats when he actually got to play the real Joker.

    TAS Joker was a 'real' Joker, as much as Ledger's, Brave and the Bold's and Nicholson's Jokers are all 'real' Jokers. The character is elastic and mentally volatile enough he can be both a credible sinister prankster and a chilling monster depending on the story.
    'Edgier' doesn't have to equal 'better'.

    I was disappointed with Judas Contract. Too many characters and subplots to juggle in an hour and a half movie. I applaud them for trying to give every member of the titans some development or something to do (except poor Raven), but it doesn't pan out. [spoilers]
    Terra's relationship with the Titans, and Beast Boy especially, isn't developed nearly enough in the movie. I think they could have easily jettisoned Blue Beetle's side story in favor of dedicating that screen time to Terra. She's a bitch throughout the movie who can't stand Beast Boy but all it takes is one conversation between the two of them to suddenly kiss...and then that's it for their relationship because she goes evil soon after. Also there's a really lazy montage of photographs set to some generic pop music from a birthday party for Terra that's supposed to make it feel like she's a part of the team but it really didn't work for me.
    Starfire and Nightwing's subplots are nice but they don't really go anywhere or even tie in to the main story. Starfire struggles with being the leader of the Titans because she feels that they don't look up to her and thinks they don't quite respect her the way they do Nightwing. I like this but unfortunately it doesn't have much of a resolution. There's never a definitive moment when Starfire takes charge and everyone else clearly defers to her as their leader.
    Deathstroke and Damian's relationship is carried over from Son of Batman. There's a scene in the movie between them that had me scratching my head because what Deathstroke says to him seems like something that the entire movie could have been based around instead of having him just be a hired goon for HIVE. He REALLY hates Damian. He sees Damian as a spoiled brat who had everything he ever wanted handed to him on a silver platter. Deathstroke worked his way up from nothing, believing he had earned the right to be Ra's al Ghul's successor only to be usurped by Damian, a child. This is an instance where I think the story would have been better served had it diverged from the comics. They should have cut out HIVE altogether and simplified the story to being about Deathstroke's personal vendetta against Robin and by extension the Titans.
    HIVE is probably the worst part of the movie. I completely forgot about the main villain and what his plans were at some point and when he finally showed up again at the end I just had this moment of "Oh right, he's the big bad pulling strings and Deathstroke is just his lackey." He was literally forgettable for me. Also of note, the bad guys in this movie suffer from MAJOR stormtrooper aim. You're jaw will drop as you watch Deathstroke of all people miss, not one, but two shots at pointblank range at Dick Grayson, who is standing completely still.
    The fatal flaw of the movie is that there is no emotional weight to Terra's betrayal. If you have to get one thing right in an adaptation of The Judas Contract, THAT has to be it. And they don't.

  I don't understand why that movie was rated R. There wasn't any nudity, there wasn't excessive gore or violence, there weren't any f-bombs, and they didn't even show the sex scene. The Dark Knight was closer to an R than that movie. I think Justice League Dark got an R rating too. Makes no sense.

      I don't think he ever "lost his touch", but it should be remembered that BTAS was a collaborative effort. Paul Dini was the incredible writer of the Animated Series with the creative assistance of Bruce Timm and Andrea Romano (Voice and Casting Director) and that's that made the series (and all their subsequent work together including the Arkham games and other animated films) so enjoyable. Timm has always had an inclination towards sexualising characters and uh, ~interesting~ approaches to character/character relationships which borders on tween fan-fiction - but when he works with others who understand the characters in their own ways, it goes pretty well so, hopefully this writer dude he's making the film with isn't just a ghost collaborator.
      P.S. regarding The Killing Joke, Timm was working with Brian Azzarello. I like Azzarello, he's a very talented writer - but he's also fucking insane. Like the David Fincher of comic books, he likes to write pulpy stories with intense violence and sexualisation - which is why him and Timm working together probably wasn't the best idea.

He produced the best DC film of all time with DKR Part 1+2, while putting WB animation on the map in the 90s. Timm´s sexual politics with his female characters have been hit and miss since the very beginning but the main TKJ segment undeniably delivered a faithful adaptation.
TKJ was also written by Brian Azzarello, NOT Timm, and is the most successful DC toon film by far (outside of Lego Batman). That success is what arguably gave a 2nd wind to the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line. 10 more of these please.

A bit off-topic, but expect a reboot of the DCEU after JL. Some insiders are saying that Ben Affleck is done after JL and that Matt Reeves wants a different Batman, a younger one. Reeves isn't happy with how it's been going so far. They're trying to create a "Bat-verse" makes sense with Whedon coming in for Batgirl.

Told you guys the DCEU would fail with Hack Snyder at the helm, expect some news soon.

      Let's see he got divorced recently. He admited he is an alcohol adict and went to rehab. B v S flopped ( at least with the critics) and he really was invested in the movie. And his last movie live by night that he wrote and directed was a disaster. I think he is close to a burnout honestly. He choose not to be the creative force behind the batman for a reason.
      I hope he continues as batman but tbh I could understand if he left.

      First it doesn't mattrt if they are actually divorced. A break up is always hard. And not knowing whats next sucks. I hear they still have a good relationship but it's just not the same.
      Second you can never ever cure alcohol abuse. You can finish rehab nut you will always be an addict and will always have the feeling you need this. Fighting against it everyday is exhausting.
      I just have the impression that he needs to figure stuff out. And that starring in at least 1 big blockbuster movie every year just is too much. Remeber he also needs to do Promotion and so on. And he can no longer concentrate on his own projects which is important to him.

      Batfelck never had time for "his" script, so most of the work should have been by Geoff. That why he basically gave up on it himself when it all got too much for him.
      Everyone involved was "winging it" till the production needed to move on but the important people all came up empty handed in the end. Which then gave us a dedicated team for the film, so good for us. A film can now finally be made.

I think this makes a lot of sense. But my guess is it will only be a soft reboot. Keep the league. Maybe recast joker and make batman younger . I think it's very likely they recast batman. Affleck seems very unhappy lately. He has a lot to figure out. Maybe fix his marriage. And I think he needs more time for his own movies. Live by night was a flop and that bothers him. He has to take his time.

  Yes, exactly. A "soft reboot" people believe that the Flash will reverse time at the end of Justice League, which I'm fine with. I think they will recast the Joker as well, Jared Leto wasn't happy at all with what they've done to him. He has complained several times in interviews about how they cut so many of his scenes out. He just isn't a great Joker. I believe I read somewhere that Ben Affleck was going through some rehab? Not entirely sure, but yes he is very upset.

You have good points but the way you go about presenting it comes off as cocky but oh well. I love Affleck as Batman but would be fine to see a new Batman. The character is bigger than one person and his well-being and family should come first. I actually prefer to see Reeves' Batman be younger and would love a prequel series to the events of MOS and BvS. By the time JL 2 would come around, they can just go with the new actor and I think it would be just fine. Comics reboot all the time and I think general audiences would be none the wiser. I hadn't read that Reeves was unhappy. I don't think that who they have cast as heroes are going anywhere anytime soon. I think like Jenkins said, each movie will have a tone that matches the character and that's how it should be. If it becomes a one-trick pony like the MCU, I'll probably be done with it all as I find the MCU unwatchable at this point. Just my opinion, I know a lot of people like what they're doing and no ones wrong for liking what they like.

I mentioned that I had not heard Reeves wasn't happy and I toned it all down to just say he was being cocky in his delivery. But ever since the Russo Bros. came in, they've been improving ever since. Winter Soldier and Civil War are some of the best superhero films we have, thanks to them.

The guy went on to even say, in between pre-insulting anyone who may disagree, that the DCEU is going in a more Marvel direction and less dark, that Ben Affleck is done after JL and their looking for a younger Batman... Apparently he "just knows this" information.
  You have the right idea wen you say lets wait till after JL, you wont have to wait that long though because Comic-Con is right around the corner and you'll know more then.

I don't know why you haters insist on this "Hack" nonsense. The man made a brilliant, beautiful movie that both challenged our ideas of what it would mean to be a superhero, and used those characters to mirror the relationship between Man and God. So I am very comfortable assigning anyone who uses the word "hack" in relationship to Snyder to the "haters" bucket.
Second, I had a nasty feeling that Reeves wouldn't want to play in the established sandbox, and I'm not surprised that Affleck might not want to continue given everything else he has going on (and I'm willing to bet that the rehab stint was prompted at least in part by the impossible pressure associated with trying to direct and star in The Batman... yes, actors do both all the time, but when was the last time one did it in a big-budget, effects-dominated, tentpole like that).
Third, other than supposedly Affleck and maybe Leto, I haven't heard any rumors of any other principal actors from the existing films being unhappy with their involvement, and that's including Cavill. So, I'd hate to see a full reboot, and even if Affleck doesn't do The Batman (or he does it as a wrapper for a flashback story), I'd hope he'd come back if JL 2 gets made.

  Some people have a deep misunderstanding and disrespect of superheroes and think they should all just be live-action cartoons. They don't think of them as actual characters that should have depth or arcs; for some people, superheroes are just multi-colored visual junk food. Batman not being the protagonist is first of all great. The new Harley sounds correct enough but that Dick romance, oh boy... It´s still not a complete train wreck, as the DCAU Nightwing managed to completely burn out on meaningful relationships at that stage and that Harley is reasonably human. Until Return of the Joker came along of course. Just don´t make it about romantic love, key?

TT: The Judas Contracts turned out to be really good / faithful this week. 8,5/10 The N52 toon films rebounded baby, with 2 good ones in a row.

As a longtime DC fan, this is the first DCAU movie that looks even remotely interesting. I think it's because of the flirty thing going on with Nightwing and Harley, which is something I never imagined seeing.

I just wish WB would change things up and have some of their animated movies have different art and directing styles. It seems like all of the movies look like BTAS and that should came out in the early 90s ffs.

I saw this animated short on YouTube called "Batman of Shanghai" or something, and it looked incredible! But, no, WB keeps going back to the well with these cookie cutter DCAU offerings that look and sound all the same.

  I don't even like anime, but the production values in a lot of animes are truly impressive. I just cannot stand the stories or voice acting in most of the animes I've seen.
  Of all the animes I've samples, I liked Vampire Hunter D 2 and FLCL.
  Just take the DCAU scripts and give the animation duties to a company that isn't the one that's been pumping out their cookie cutter movies for the last decade. Or just mix it up a little. Maybe 1 out of every 4 movies has a different art/direction style. Some kind of diversity there.

    Stop. World's Finest, Under the Red Hood, Flashpoint Paradox, Justice League Doom etc are not cookie cutter.

      That was my point. They need to make good animated movies instead of pooping out clones in a cookie machine.
