Nicole Kidman confirms she'll play Aquaman's mom, and explains why

The last time we heard about Nicole Kidman and Aquaman was earlier this year when she was just "in talks". Now, the actress has confirmed it's a done deal.

Kidman, who previously starred in 1995's Batman Forever, will be making her return to DC Comics in Aquaman as Queen Atlanna, aka Aquaman's mom. In a new interview, she told Entertainment Weekly why she decided to take the role.

“The reason why I love [Aquaman] is James Wan is an Australian, and I’ve followed his career since he started. He’s a really good friend of mine, and he offered to let me play Queen Atlanna,” Kidman said. “As soon as he said I could wear mother-of-pearl and be a mermaid warrior, I said I’m done. Please. If there is one thing I have to do in my life, I have to be that. [Laughs] Because, you’ve got to have some fun.”

Aquaman is scheduled to begin shooting around May in Australia. It will be released on December 21, 2018.

        The first Avenger was one the best he has ever done, and making a movie of a whole team is very difficult, which is why he left Marvel to focus on one character. Warner Bros is smart for offering him this project since he has a huge fanbase. But hopefully, his Batgirl film is good.

        Once again, the Avengers is very overrated. I can see why the masses enjoy it, it's very light and comedic. But it is no true superhero film, it's more of a comedy. I hope he can pull it off with Batgirl, but I doubt it.

        Im a DC guy and I only prefer darker superhero movies but I will never say that the first Avenger was overrated, it was a very good movie, but Age of Ultron was definitely one of the worst. But anyway, I think Josh Whedon would do a great job, never say he will ruin Batgirl or his movies are overrated, they needed someone like him since Marvel fans prefer lighhearted and funny colorful movies.

        Hey, if you enjoyed the Avengers, that's cool. It's not a film for me. The plot was very weak to me, it's very straight forward and predictable which ultimately made it boring for me. There's no real drama, I wasn't emotionally engaged. I will say that I had great laughs and that's about as much praise I can give the film. There isn't anything groundbreaking about it, but to each his own.

        Age of Ultron has gotten better with time, I definitely prefer it over the first Avengers movie. I may even like it more than Civil War... maybe.

    I guess that depends on you. WW lost a director and has had multiple reports of problems with the film. Multiple reports on JL being a mess and being one of the issues with the delay of "The Batman" film... there's been nothing but positives with Aquaman from the moment they got their director to right now as they are beginning to shoot the film. I'm hopeful it continues.

      I don't remember those Justice League things you mentioned but I remember that they acknowledged those Wonder Woman reports as bogus. I knew it lost its director but it's seemed to be doing great with Jenkins

Yeah I have to say, that DCEU knows how to cast its women. I do think that Amy Adams needs some work as Lois Lane but mostly they've been great :)

    I love BvS and all, but this pretty much points out (and makes me realize) how much they dumbed down the DCEU Batman... I mean come on, he is supposed to be the world's greatest detective right, yet Lois is the only one who seemed to be doing detective work :/

      You got it half right... it's "worlds greatest detective, who's blinded by the sense of fear, anger, and rage that turns good men cruel."
      Keyword is blinded... some people say that he is "dumb" but I've personally been in a dark place and you really can't think straight when you are consumed by those negative emotions. this has nothing to do with the actual intelligence of a person as we still see Batman crafting the kryptonite spear, building the mech suit, customizing the grenades with a kryptonite gas... as far as the main plot goes the only thing batman didn't see was lex pulling the strings. It's clear in BvS that Batman in his current state of mind is thinking with his heart on his sleeve and being more brash and impulsive... a good example of this is with Wallace keefe and the explosion. Bruce learns that Wallace keefe didn't get his checks on the same day as the senate explosion... and the senate explosion sets in a state of confusion because superman was present... and what was Bruce's reaction? Rage. And that rage continued to blind him.

        They keep forgetting that Bruce completely lost it in BvS and about what Alfred says about "... turns good men cruel."
        So much stuffs are said and shown during the movie but people aren't paying attention. Apparently Zack needs to freaking put cards explaining stuffs like right after Alfred said those things, put a black screen "Alfred says that because Bruce's blinded by the sense of fear, anger, and rage because of the destruction in Metropolis when Superman showed up thinking that Superman actually brought the war on Earth... blablabla". Like in those old movies XD

        It's true man. I've read quite lots of the complaints this movie got and they were ALL freaking explained in the movie! You know that some people said this about MOS "How come Lois never realized Kal was Clark." this is for real. She only screams his name throughout the whole movie but no, she has no idea. And those are the same kind of complaints BvS got while EVERYTHING makes sense in it. BvS is a pure masterpiece, comes closest to Watchmen for me, but it had Batman AND Superman in one movie, which makes it a bit better than Watchmen, automatically XD.
        As long as Snyder helms the DCEU, and I hope he does it until the end, it'll be good.
        This is one thing I wish most for and that he directs more than only JL2 next.

        I agree completely. I just hope the poor(not) guy doesn't get fatigued... I can't think of a single director in history that has taken so much hate for something... and the crazy thing is that when he was getting bashed left and right for BvS I felt like I was part of the same twilight zone for liking it! Haha... and it's grown on me with time. sort of like Prometheus, I dont ignore the flaws but I like a film that at least provokes discussion while adding more questions and expands a universe... but I do think in time BvS will be appreciated more especially when seen as part of a real trilogy, BvS being the second and darkest... i.e. Lord of the rings / Star Wars OT

      You're spot on with all of the points you make here, but the greatest point you make with this break-down is one you did not intend to make:
      BvS actually has a great story, but the person who helmed this behemoth lacks the subtlety nuance to bring all of its qualities to life, & the finished product wnds up being a shell of what it could've been.

        Respectfully disagree. I've seen all of Snyder's films and imo he has only gotten better and more daring as a film maker. I do not think he lacks subtle nuance and in fact if he was less subtle with some of the actions/character motivations in BvS it would have probably been received better. 99% of all hate and "plot holes" and complaints I hear about BvS are actually explained in the movie with direct dialogue addressing it. the main reason why people "didn't get that" is from not paying close attention. and what really gets me is if your going to go to a movie theater and shell out 15 to 20 bucks to see a movie, why wouldn't you play close attention? Lol

        Just so there's no confusion I thought it might be appropriate to preface the fact that the opinions I share here about this film are in response to the vastly superior UltimateCut of the movie. Personally, I fucking adore Snyder's visual style, but if you're going to try and make the case that he is a good storyteller than you're seriously delusional. First off let's just acknowledge the fact that just because a movie has within itself all of the necessary bits of information to make sense of the story it's attempting to tell does not immediately mean that said movie has accomplished the task of competently relaying that information in an intelligent artistic manner. If just having all of the needed information floating around somewhere in a movie's runtime was all the criterion required of a film to be considered a critical success than we'd be seeing some hillariously interesting Oscar races at the end of each year. Now, obviously with a property the size of BvS there are alot of ppl involved, & of course there is some blame to go around such as the theatrical cut not being the ultimate edition which is of course the version Snyder would have preferred to release first, but even within this director's cut there are some genuinely tired, & just objectively bad writing decisions that cannot be blamed on anyone, but Z.S.. I know I know you're gonna say blame the studio machine for these problems or better yet Chris Terrio, & D. Goyer, but in a universe initially envisioned by Snyder himself (don't forget the dceu was being called by folks on the inside at warners, "TheSnyderverse) you can 100% blame the director for such hackneyed story beats as:
        -Luther has Supes mother kidnapped in an effort to stir up a fist fight between him, & bats... such an uninspired tired plot mechanism
        -Decides to rush the whole death of Superman story arch into an already jammed up plot, and this further works toward the disruption of flow within this already clunky blockbuster's story
        -When Supes confronts Bats down near the docks he just flies away after warning him to back off apparently just disregarding the heavily armed criminals barreling down the city streets with no regard for human life.
        -Zack Snyder came out, & let everyone know that he very intentionally made sure Bats&Supes never had a Daredevil vs Punisher esque conversation that would have quite easily established a sense of clarity regarding character motivations, & contrasing ideologies. I mean this simple exchange would have clearly outlined, & fleshed out all the reasons for Bats current macabre worldview in this universe thereby eliminating most any of the questions as to why this iteration of Batman has such a low regard for criminal's lives.
        -Let's just throw a jarringly out of context "dream sequence" into the mix.
        There's soooooo much more that could be said about just how pathetic some of the story choices are in this film, but I know you'll just excuse all of these things because you personally feel that this is a really great film, & nothing anyone will say to you will ever help you to see the light, & you know what I'm genuinly happy for you more power to ya cause I went into BvS hoping to REALLY love it I even bought it, & I still watch it, but none of this changes the fact that in the end Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a second rate movie starring my favorite comicbook characters of all time. Now all of that negative ranting aside:
        - I personally believe BvS is less of a letdown than TheDarkKnightRises
        -other than a few nitpicks I think Man of Steel is one of the greatest superheroe films ever made.
        -I honestly think BenAffleck is the best on-screen Batman we've ever had.
        -I'm holding out hope that JusticeLeague is amazing, & shuts up all the naysayers
        -I still have faith that Snyder could surprise us all with JL, & give us a movie with a great story told well.

I just feel so bummed by my experience with this film especially when the wait was sooooo long ya know? Anyways, it is an awesome piece of spectacle, & that is something that cannot be taken away from it.

        Hehe it's all good... I've been on the opposite side of that coin many times myself and it is good to have a real conversation for once... it's too bad the story wasn't for you... personally I actually liked the theatrical cut because it made me guess sooo much and when the ultimate cut came out it felt like more pieces to the same puzzle... I know everyone likes to rag on DC/WB for releasing director cuts and saying it's a cash grab but in the case of the Ultimate Cut it really was needed to fully flesh out the story we should have gotten in theaters and I hope WB/DC learned a lesson based on the reception of the theatrical cut versus the UC that is universally praised as the better version of BvS. I think if BvS was the 3rd film in the Dceu with Batman being between man of steel and BvS it would have easily set the numbers up to have the 3hour version in theaters... but having only man of steel to judge by, once again the higher ups had to make sure there were more viewings.

  The whole cast is great. Only Gal has yet to prove herself but the rest is all great! Oh yeah and Miller looks more like a Wally/Bart than a Barry.

      That wasn't thanks to the acting, but more like thanks to how Zack made her appearance. Except if she was the highlight because of that talk scene at the event with Bruce or the one at the end. I'm talking about acting, not the fight scenes. Fight scenes are thanks to Zack.

      Duh, because I've seen em in movies where they had more than 10mins of acting? Momoa's Aquaman looks pretty much the same kind of character as we've seen him play in his recent movies/shows. Ezra, I've only seen him in Fantastic Beasts, where I believe he played quite nice. The rest except Ray, we've seen em plenty.
      But sorry for not detailing about whom I was talking. It was obvious I wouldn't say that about Ray.

    This visual effect may have been caused by photo angle (more smiling at right), his bear (hiding his cheeks at left, shaved at right), eyebrows (normal at left, stylized at right). It may not be plastic surgery (more a clickbait I would say).

Such a pity she did botox... She was an incredibly beautiful woman who was aging like a fine wine and then she did that... Such a shame. On the other hand, it doesn't seem to limit her performances as much as I thought it would. She's still acing it.

  A bad script gives the actor very little to work with, leaving them to just try and do the best they can with awful material. On the other hand a good script will give the actor more and better tools to exploits his/her talent. Also some characters are well suited for certain actors, and others are not.
  A good example could be the first Daredevil movie, it made Ben Affleck and Colin Farrell look really bad, and they are good actors, they just had a bad script and bad direction among other things.

  Just look at the Star Wars prequels. First thing that came to my head. Even some great actors there (Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Sam Jackson) were shitty as hell due to some awful lines that no one can properly deliver.

    I loved Liam Neeson in TPM and I thought Natalie Portman and Sam Jackson were pretty good too. When it comes to Star Wars though, bad lines aren't exclusive to the prequels IMO

      Really? Liam, much like Affleck in BvS, did good work under a terrible actor's director because of himself basically.
      But Natalie Portman was dreadful. Boring, dull, and completely forgettable. Samuel L Jackson in the prequels was one of the biggest miscast decisions I've ever seen in a major motion picture. He's not very good at portraying calm and collected characters. He's boring as fuck then. He doesn't have the personality to pull it off, especially under such a shitty director like Lucas is.
      As for the second sentence you wrote, that is very true! Rewatching A New Hope is always a small bit painful due to Mark Hammil's extremely poor line delivery at times!

        Well, George Lucas is an awful actor's director. So, Liam, working under him, did a good job mostly because of his ability and skill as an actor. Much like Ewan McGregor did.
