Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is in talks with DC Comics

Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin told ComicBook.com at CinemaCon this week that he has upcoming meetings with both DC Comics and Marvel.

“I happen to have meetings coming up with both DC and Marvel," Sorkin said. "I have to go into these meetings and tell them as respectfully as I can that I’ve never read a comic book. It’s not that I don’t like them. It’s just that I’ve never been exposed to one. So, I’m hoping that somewhere in their library is a comic book character that I’m gonna love and I’m gonna wanna go back and start reading from the first issue on.”

Sorkin won an Oscar in 2011 for writing The Social Network, which starred Lex Luthor actor Jesse Eisenberg. He's also known for writing A Few Good Men, Moneyball, The West Wing, The Newsroom, and Steve Jobs.

I wonder if this sudden interest in comic book movies was prompted by Jesse Eisenberg and/or Andrew Garfield who played in The Social Network (screenplay by Sorkin)?

  I find that interesting and Andrew might have a shoot at coming back as Spiderman, since Sony wants to screw up Spider-Man again by taking him out of MCU after his sequel for their spider verse universe.

  What about Jack Nicholson? He was in A Few Good Men, and he was in Batman, a much better movie/performance than any comic book movie both those actors were in. Also, Michael Fassbender. Nicole Kidman, Michael Douglas...

        Jesus, dude. I was just saying that your comment didn't really make sense because this guy has written movies that have had people who've been in Super Hero movies before. It simply made no sense. He is the writer of the movies. Just because an actor that played in a movie he wrote starred in a super hero movie, it doesn't mean that's the reason. They're actors. There's hundreds of stars who've been in a super hero movie at this point. How am I blinded by hate, again? You got triggered as fuck there, which shows some clear bias from your part. No need to get so pissed off because someone decided to use logic, right?
        You should really start reading the comments throughly and maybe answer to the question at hand there.

        Either way, I like both those actors, and loved them to death in The Social Network. Doesn't take away that your initial comment made no sense. Why the fuck would a writer be interested in super hero movies just because two actors that were in a movie he made were both in super hero movies? Especially since I've given examples of previous actors that have worked in movies he's written who have also worked in Super hero movies.
        Sorry, it's completely ilogical. The main reason is probably the fact that these movies are juggernauts and he is seeing dollar signs and a possibility of leaving his mark in a genre well known for being lazily written most of the time.
        Care to come down that high horse of yours and see things as they are, or are you going to keep acting all high and mighty with logic not even 5th graders would agree with?

The first thing I thought about after reading the title of this article was: "Are DC and Marvel planning to do a crossover now?" People in our community should know that this will happen and it's not a question of "If" but "when".

  I would love to see a movie multi verse similar to what lego movie did with WB proprieties. Imagine all Fox, Disney, Universal, WB, biggest properties in a massive film that would explode the box office but it will never ever happen since they all can't get along.

    The DC/Marvel crossover is inevitable and it will happen sometime between 2023-2025. Other crossovers? If the first one turns out to be highly profitable, other ones will follow.

Uh...yeah. The writers and directors who are non-comic book enthusiasts, make me REALLY nervous, when it comes to adapting "my" DC characters. Even Christopher Nolan was at least a big Batman fan. Had Chris Terrio been more of a comic book guy, no doubt that BvS script would've reached it's full potential. I think he became a lot more knowledgeable, while working on the Justice League script. It's why WB has to continue to rely on the divisive Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer. Love em' or hate em', they're passionate comic book nerds.

I love how twitter blew up defending DC over THR's report how modern day super hero CB movies are overflown with usage of "brainless cannon fodder" minions and attached JL trailer to it???
I mean, Avengers, Age of Ultron, Iron Man 2, Thor 2 (even though I completely understand why would they use cannon fodder minions) and THR reported - nothing.
But DC doing that - no-no... *rolling eyes*

  Their movies are great for popcorn & decent character development. IMO they've kept the same feel in every movie & brainwashed the moviegoer audience to think a CBM needs to be one way.
  Give me my dark Batman flicks & grunge Aquaman all day every day. Even switch it up with a "lighter" tone JLA flick while you're at it!

    I still think it's totally possible to write in Bryan Cranston as "Lex Sr". Lex Jr talks about his dad being the "real" Lex in the Lexcorp, he talks about his dad quite a bit. So why couldn't we have it be that he used his own tech to cryogenically freeze himself and voila there you go. You can retain Eisenberg as his twitchy annoying less competent son if you really want to, at least have him pass on his learned knowledge of cryptonian civilization, but it's really really easy to explain it all away. And while it wouldn't be the best path they could have taken to get there, I think 99% of us would forgive the retcon if it got Eisenberg out and Cranston (my personal pick ) or anybody better into the role of Lex Luther. And now that I think about it having Lex Luther as your dad might go along way towards explaining Lex Jr's craziness.

  He'd be perfect for the Denny O'Neil Zen version. Not so much for the "I go through everyone's garbage" guy from DCU, and definitely not for the hardcore Objectivist Ditko original. Personally, I think the DCU version is the best path forward for the character; like Rorschach, but not utterly insane.

Social Network was great, Steve Jobs was dull as dishwater. I would never have believed these words would come out of my mouth, but Ashton Kutcher was wayyyyyy better at playing Jobs than Fassbender, and the movie was a lot more entertaining whilst still being grounded.

@BatmanNews you forgot Sorkin's Magna Carta, The West Wing. The 4 seasons he controlled could be argued to be the best political drama/television show in history. I consider him to be on the Mount Rushmore of writers. Allowing Marvel to get this talent would be such a waste because we all know they underutilize their talent with shallow stories. WB's reputation of an artistic driven studio gives them a slight advantage in terms of negotiation. If they sign sorkin to a project, it could approach Dark Knight level quality. This is a must for DC and WB. Especially since they have struggled with story and dialogue between the films that have been released.

    Hence why I said the four seasons. I completely disagree with you that season 1 was the weakest of the whole series(?). Seasons 6+7 were pretty eh. Five was okay because it still had some storylines from season 4. Out of his four seasons, season 1 took a bit to get its footing but it was still great television

      The dialogue was clunky, the characters lacked definition, the prostitution subplot was abysmal and the moralizing was though the roof. Most of that was shaken off by the end of S01 but it was a slog.
      The best seasons were S04 and 05.
      PS: It´s magnum opus, not magna carta.

        Lol! That's for the correction! 100% agree on the prostitution story line. Took away the credibility of Sam. For me season 2 and 4 were my favorite. Let me rewatch season 5 and I'll get back to you!
        I do disagree with the character defintion. Over the course of the season, I felt like I knew them all!
        That's also just sorkin, he lives in a liberal world and the west wing was his take. On what our government should be versus what it is. Especially true now, where no one works for the common good.
        Glad there's someone on here, who I can discuss this with lol!

Aaron Sorkin is a genius in a certain genre. He is not a genius at everything. Aaron Sorking writing a political thriller full of dialogue is a great choice. Aaron Sorkin writing a superhero tentpole summer action movie makes zero sense. Particularly when he admits he knows nothing of the genre. This is like thinking well, Bob Dylan is a great song writer, we should get him to write a song for Cannibal Corpse and it'd be awesome. No. No, it wouldn't be.

I think WB's/DC will look to get him onboard to write the screenplay for the Man of Steel sequel or The Batman for Reeves. He would basically do a pass at Johns, Afflecks and Terrios story and script.

Just started to watch west wing now that I've grown and like the political dramas. I'm sure people hear will say Batman for DC or I'm sorry to the marvel fan boys but someone with depth as batman in marvel. It'll be great for him to tackle a new character for both companies that we've never seen before that'll make us love comic book movies all over again (not that we ever stop loving them in the first place)

Brilliant writer. If he does write a dc or marvel movie it'd be great for the genre as a whole! But don't just hire him and then get a hack/visonless director (like most DC/Marvel directors) to put the script in movie form. It can completely destroy the script and the work put into it. But it is great news. Really hope he falls in love with a comic book character then!
