Report: Warner Bros. wants 'X-Men' and 'Kingsman' director for 'Man of Steel 2'

Since last summer we heard that a Man of Steel sequel was in "active development", but things seem to be moving past that stage.

According to Collider, Kingsman: The Secret Service's Matthew Vaughn is Warner Bros.’ top choice to direct Man of Steel 2, and the two parties are currently in early talks. Collider notes that if Vaughn passes on the Superman movie, Warner Bros. would still want to work with him on a different DC Films project.

In 2010, Vaughn pitched a Superman movie to Warner Bros., but they ended up going with Christopher Nolan and David Goyer's idea instead, which lead us to Man of Steel. Vaughn went on to direct Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, so he's no stranger to the superhero movie genre.

Later that year, Vaughn told MTV what a Superman movie should be like. He said: "I think that's the one thing not to do with Superman, trying to do the serious 'The Dark Knight' version. Superman is about color and fun, or it should be, for me."

Well, Vaughn makes very good movies, but he always put nudity or sex scenes in his movies and I don't appreciate it.

    No, I was thinking about Kingsman's end when you have a zoom on a girl's ass(hole), or the kind of "yeah come to fuck me" scenes like in Kick-Ass or First Class (with Erik / Mystique). I just don't appreciate it, you can do a good movie without those kind of perversity.

  and yet most people dont understand them anyway, even taking my comment and/or Snyder out of the equation, he is not the right director to this, FC was weak with some good moments that are not his merit and had almost nothing to do with X-Men, Kick Ass is a bad movie that has nothing to do with the comic book, he doesnt adapt well teh source material, he is not the right choice

    FC is more like a Bond movie that an X-Men one, it does have some good, Marvel and X-Men moments, but is too different, look at DoFP, that is a Marvel movie an X-Movie, and a great movie and adaptation all around, and Kick Ass is a entertaining but shallow movie that has NOTHING to do with the source material, if he wants to do some movie that is unrelated to the characters then he has to do something else

      For what it's worth, in relation to Kick-Ass being entirely different from the comic (per the film's Wikipedia):
      The rights to a film version of the comic book were sold before the first issue was published. Developed in parallel, the film writers took a different story direction, to reach many of the same conclusions. Mark Millar acknowledges the differences, explaining that a comic usually has eight acts, while a film usually has a three-act structure.
      Vaughn said that, "We wrote the script and the comic at the same time so it was a very sort of collaborative, organic process. I met [Millar] at the premiere of Stardust. We got on really well. I knew who he was and what he had done but I didn't know him. He pitched me the idea. I said, 'That's great!' He then wrote a synopsis. I went, 'That's great, let's go do it now! You write the comic, I'll write the script.'"[22] Jane Goldman one of the screenwriters, said that when she works with Vaughn she does the "construction work" and the "interior designing" while Vaughn acts as the "architect."

    what are you even talking about? A Superman movie should NOT be dark. Intelligent and thought provoking is one thing, but by your definition it seems you think dark=intelligent, which is not the case. Adding a dark colour palette and making Superman snap his villain's neck doesn't make it intelligent at all. Mark Waid who wrote, Superman Birthright (possibly one of the best Superman origin stories) hates MOS, Max Landis (I know, I can barely stand the guy as well, but he wrote Superman American Alien, one of the best new Superman stories out there), also hates MOS. Mark Millar, wrote Red Son, etc. I can go on, and many of these writers don't like MOS because of the dark palette and direction it took. I'm praying to God, that Vaughan gets this job. He will make Superman Great Again.

  oh no they are. Thats...not really an opinion its more of a fact in all honesty. Based off of some very simple observation and critical thinking. There was a tremendous amount of thought put into Batman v Superman's story. If you can't see that then you likely have an extremely surface level perception of what was happening in the film and thus, did not quite understand the movie. Lmfao. I have anyalzed this movie far too much to buy into this whole "its not that we dont understand it, its just that its really stupid" mentality. I have been proven right far too many times in my notion that many of the themes and story points in the movie blew over a lot of people's heads to be swayed by someone simply stating "These movies are not intelligent people". Now, whether or not you like it may indeed be up to you however. But to deny the intricacies of the narrative is simply wrong. Sorry

  Have you read Superman Rebirth? Because thats getting rave reviews from critcs and fans and part of that is because its fun and full of colour. Its funny because in the comic book world of DC their moving away from pretty much everything the DCEU has been doing. As for not understnding the DCEU we understood it just fine, to be blunt the reason the DCEU gets poor reviews and lots of hate is because to be frank its really poor.

Matthew is 10 times the director Snyder could ever hope to be, which can only mean good things for the MoS sequel, but to my shock (not really) fanboys turn this into an issue because he had the audacity to disagree with Snyder's "vision".
I hope this becomes a reality.

    Snyder publicly admitted he didn't like mainstream superheroes (including Superman) before he was hired to direct MoS. He also clearly has never read comics if he thinks Batman "killed all the time" in TDKR (spoiler, he didn't kill anyone). And you expect me to believe this guy is a comic book guru? Nah, he has evidently just read Watchmen, and some Frank Miller stuff and acts as though this gives him comic book knowledge and authority.
    I'm sorry, but the notion that Snyder actually cares, never mind has read anything about these characters, is wishful thinking at best. Someone who makes Batman into a psychotic murderer clearly knows jack shit about the central themes of the Batman lore. The same can be said for Superman. MoS wasn't too bad (in terms of Superman's characterizations), but in BvS (even though I preferred the movie as a whole, the Ultimate Cut at least) did not resemble the classic, nor current day comic book Superman whatsoever.

      Every single one that he worked with said that Zack might even be way too much into the comics. And I'd believe those videos over everything you said, or might say, that fits your thought/opinion, anytime.
      But if you're talking about his wife that SHE actually never liked those mainstream heroes until Zack came up with MoS, then yeah. I saw this too. And believe it or not, but many people in here, never actually cared, or stopped caring, about Superman until they saw MoS.

        Except most of these "references" are either visual references (which only requires one to take a look at a comic, NOT read them, which is exactly what Snyder's done), or pretentious biblical ones that have nothing to do with the source material in the first place. Also, lots of fanboys see "references" where none exists and pretend the movie to be way smarter than it actually is.
        As for "He always loved Batman", that not only contradicts his previous statement that "Superman is his favorite superhero" (which is so self-evidently a lie), but most importantly, it is directly contradicted by his own freaking statements 10 years ago. I do somewhat buy that he at the very least liked Batman (Superman however, he never gave a shit), mostly because he's a Frank Miller fanboy and probably read TDKR once in his life and liked it, but that still doesn't explain his delusions as to how he can possibly say "Batman killed all the time in TDKR" even though the exact kill count was.... ZERO. You see, this is the type of obvious bullshit that makes me question just how big of a hypocritical liar Snyder really is.

I wrote a book... Bad habits die hard.
I have nothing against Vaughn as a director, but I'm not okay with this insistence on trashing Snyder's vision of superheroism. Snyder is so incredibly well-versed in the DC canon and mythology, and he has been doing great work with the DCEU. The guy is called an idiot who doesn't read comics, but the depth and the obscurity of some of his references and his plot points remind us that he knows exactly what he's doing, that sometimes he just likes to subvert. Nothing is necessarily wrong with that, so long as he takes these characters seriously and sees their inherent dignity and importance, which he does. He often just tailors these heroes to his own philosophy (which I would argue owes much to Ayn Rand, as he himself has suggested).
Snyder has always been lambasted by critics, but there is a substantial contingent of hard-core, devoted fans who generally understand his brilliance. I fall into that category. Interestingly, though I enjoy it, I think "Man of Steel" is one of his weakest movies, because he's forced to fit a different aesthetic (without Larry Fong) and he has to accommodate Christopher Nolan's (and David Goyer's) vision of Superman. When you let him take control, guide the creative direction, and embrace his own aesthetic and his own vision, you get something more in line with "Batman v Superman." And I'm sorry if you disagree, but that movie is so criminally underrated. In all seriousness -- I can hear the snickering already -- it was the best movie I saw in 2016. And I saw most of the Best Picture nominees.
The fact that WB/DC continues to slowly, steadily distance itself from Snyder is disappointing to say the least, and developments like this -- as it considers directors like Vaughn, who have creative philosophies seemingly more in line with the tone of the Marvel movies -- make me worry that the DCEU I've come to love will evolve into something disconcertingly akin to the MCU. This was always supposed to be a different interpretation of the genre from Marvel's bubble-gum, formulaic, "flavor of the week" stuff. Why are we giving in to the people whose opinions don't matter as much as those of real fans?
That being said, I don't like to be reactionary. Perhaps Vaughn will jump on board and provide us with a more mature vision than his words seemed to suggest a few years ago. Superman doesn't have to be some dark, depressing character. But let's also not make "Guardians of the Galaxy"-level comedic, colorful nonsense. That's not DC. Sorry to arrogantly place DC on a pedestal, but our heroes and our stories are more complex than that. They deserve to be taken seriously and treated with dignity, as art. And I hope, should he sign on, that Vaughn will recognize that. He's a good director, and I think he deserves a chance if he's given one.
But... Can't we at least TRY to get George Miller?

  WB will never distance itself from Snyder. It never happened even after Watchmen barely met its budget money in the BO and Sucker Punch drowned. Man of Steel was a success and so was BvS. No matter what everyone says. And if they let Snyder go, fans will realize how important that amazing director was. I'd even say he IS THE BEST director you can get in this kind of movies. Every single superhero movie he has made so far, are amazing. And it's not about opinion when your only reason why you didn't like BvS were "the fight between Bats and Sups was too short" or "their mothers share the same name, so he let Supe live". That. Is. Not. An. Opinion. That's stupidity showing itself. Because you didn't understand a movie, it doesn't make it stupid.
  And I believe Vaughn is a great director but he's totally not fit for a Superman movie. He should direct The Flash, or Cyborg, or Shazam.

        then why are we getting director rumors about suicide squad and batman? why not just talk about it when its actually confirmed? plus we get tons of director confirmations for gotham city sirens, batman, maybe suicide squad, maybe shazam, and even nightwing. probably a failsafe just incase the main characters fail. makes me think there not focusing on flash which is stupid. ill wait but if we dont have a director by comic con then you can kiss flash goodbye for 2019 or at least the beginning or middle of that year.

Everyone has their own perception and opinion on what Superman should and shouldn't be. Vaughn is a talented writer and director.
X-Men First Class had a pretty level balance of light and serious tones I thought. I believe he also wrote the story for DOFP as well which I loved. Would love to see his take on any DC character.

  Vaughn has done some good work. Layer Cake, Stardust, and Kingsman were solid fun.
  First Class wasn't bad but overall, fairly middling. It's my least favorite of the new trilogy.

Vaughn is like GDT where he gets announced for a lot of stuff and then he backs out of a lot of stuff. He was supposed to do both X-Men 3 and Thor and then he backed out last second. Same with DOFP. So even if they do offer him the job and he signs on I doubt he makes it to the director chair. If WW is decently recieved and makes money I wouldn't mind seeing Patty get the job.

Honestly I'm kinda done with the Marvel movies. Every movie seems like the same movie. I'll watch Black Panther and Infinity War, but I'm really not rushing to see them like I once was. I watched Dr. Strange the other day and while it's a decent movie, it has the same Marvel formula over and over again. I hope Black Panther is treated like a legit action drama.

  It wont. I saw every single Marvel movie so far but no more. Tired. Everytime expecting their movies to grow up a bit. They never did. They're killing all those great characters. And the saddest part is, Spider-Man is next.

  It's not really that it's just the constant jokes. Like the airport scene in Civil War is outstanding, but why do they have to crack jokes in what's supposed to be a literal life or death situation? If Tony succeeds in capturing Bucky then god knows what they will do to Bucky so what's with all the joking? Stuff like that takes me out of the movie.

    EDIT: Watched again last night..there are 35 jokes or one liners within that scene. Even if being generous and removing Spider-man's dialogue, you could still count about 25. I'm not kidding ladies and gents. Give it a watch again.

  I tried watching Civil War again last week and the jokes are horrendous. So, so silly and unnecessary. Yet to see Dr. Strange (and will) but I agree, for me the MCU is no longer a priority to rush out to see in the theater or buy on blu ray anymore. It's just kind of "blah" now (for me at least).

    I saw Dr. Strange and don't even bother. It's just the same ol' Marvel movie. Jokes are not funny. Again the villain is just a throw away character. It's freaking Mads Mikkelsen and they just threw it away. But the effects were great, but overall, it was just boring. Watch the movie when you have nothing to do or so. -_-

    Finally saw Doctor Strange the other day myself. I thought it was pretty good, but it does sometimes have an ill-fitting lightness to what should be heavy, epic moments. The quippage is minimal, but it is there. The same humor you dislike has echoed through (of course).
    I personally didn't mind that much and managed to enjoy it, but I think from what you've said that you probably won't fawn over it. Not a masterpiece, but Benedict does a great job with what he has, and I'd kill to see him in a more intense, maybe action/thriller-esque sequel.
    TL;DR - I'm not totally satisfied, but I'm not angry either. It's hot in some ways, and cold in others. It was good enough that I'd recommend at least giving it a clean shot and trying to appreciate what was done well. :)

      I'll give it a try as I support the genre in general but at this point, I feel like I know what to expect from the MCU. I just wish they'd be willing to try new things because right now, it's very stale.

        Agreed. I'm trying to just enjoy what I can while forgiving the missed potential for more engaging, gripping stories with all of Marvel's great characters.
        Definitely grateful for the more adult-minded DC films we've been getting. Without Burton's Batman, and then Nolan's, we might be looking at a much more disappointing world as fans right now. They're effectively the parents of the DCEU, which is obviously my preferred approach so far. :)

Yeap, agreed. MCU is quickly becoming into the transformers of comicbook movies. I would hate for this to happen to DCEU.

  Isn't that was many people already classify the DCEU as? Not even hating, I legitimately have seen that comparison a ton of times by now. It doesn't really make much sense. Right now, the MCU is well reviewed and well liked by general audiences. Transformers comparisons don't really make much sense there.
