Mel Gibson confirms 'Suicide Squad 2' talks: We're on our first date

Yesterday we got some big breaking news that said Mel Gibson was in talks with Warner Bros. to direct Suicide Squad 2. At an event later last night, Gibson confirmed the reports.

Gibson was at a screening of his Oscar-nominated movie Hackshaw Ridge, and during a Q&A portion was asked about the Suicide Squad 2 news. "So is this getting close to a deal or is it a first date?," the moderator asked. "It's kind of a first date," Gibson replied.

Awesome. Just watched Suicide Squad with wife last night. It's terrible. I seen it in theatres and thought the same. Only watched 80 minutes then switched it off. Then watched Hacksaw Ridge. Wow. Best war film since saving private Ryan. Mel is a great director would love him on board but think MoS 2 would suit his style better. All American hero, Christ allegory ect yeah Supes way more suited to him.

        watch me. American Psycho has a rotten tomato rating of 67% and to me that is one the best performances of Christian bales career. Point is the critical consensus does not determine whether someone truly likes a film or not. and there's the combination of pop culture... if you think for one second that it was not "cool" to make fun of BvS then your delusional. I have a teacher that said "I don't watch poor cinema like BvS because it's crap" I said well did you watch the movie? His response: "I only watched the scenes that mattered on YouTube"... that's when I called him a sheep and he let other peoples opinion dictate his own...pop culture had told him that BvS was bad and if you though otherwise then you were just stupid. If jj Abrahms took risks with Star Wars TFA he would be where Zak Snyder is now... but he played it safe and relied on nostalgia to make sure his ass was covered and the big wigs were happy. If you prefer "safe" story telling then you have the MCU. I prefer interesting and complex narratives that challenge our perspectives of ourselves inside and out and what we mean to this world depicted by allegorys of superheroes that have real character development. enjoy your mindless fluff while I enjoy artistic innovation.

This is just crazy, never in a million years would I have thought Gibson would do a film like this. WB sure knows how to change the narrative in the press, for a solid few weeks all the news on the DC stuff has been negative, then Matt Reeves gets announced and this Gibson news drops and everyone is hopeful again.

    Tbh we will never know what is going on in the studio, but if there is smoke then there is usually fire. The smoke could very well be them just moving chess pieces around in order to right the ship of the DC Universe, but we won't know until WW and especially JL come out. Many of the guys running these news sites have pretty good connections in Hollywood, they know what goes on but can't come out right and tell us, but it benefits them to release little titbits every few weeks so suckers like us will keep coming back!

    All deals in Hollywood are business decisions. It's a give and take environment. Ben didn't take the role of Batman just because he loves Batman. The thing that matters most is that Mel doesn't half ass films he directs. Hell, he doesn't half ass straight to DVD films he's starred in for a paycheck either. If Mel finds something in SS that he can sink his teeth into and tell a gritty, espionage story with Will Smith (which the two really want to work together) and Viola Davis (oh and let us not forget his Aussie brother Jai Courtney and maybe his Aussie sister Margot Robbie) WB has something special in their hands. Obviously, no film is guaranteed to be great, but this sounds like a delicious recipe.

He won't do it. The person who broke the story says he's more interested in the cast than the source material, he's been trying to do a movie with Will Smith for years (They almost made The Accountant together) and what he said about BvS and superhero movies in general has now spread like wildfire.

  It is kind of messed up that WB and DC is hiring a guy who trashed their movie and the entire genre in general before picking a woman director who actually has a passion for material like this.
  Bright side: If Wonder Woman makes bank they'll chase after the money and repeat that formula with another person like Patty.

  Good point. Female directors get shafted too often, no matter how talented. Mel was in the dog house for a hot minute, but all it took was one strong directorial moment and he is right back in hollywoods good graces. He's like a horrible boyfriend you just can't stop taking back for some reason. While I like him directing this movie, your point is so spot on.

  I saw the exact opposite. El Diablo was criticized for being a stereotypical gang banger, Katana didn't contribute anything and infamously didn't trap anybody in her sword after all that Rick Flagg exposition for it and there's the whole BET joke with Killer Croc.
  But yeah, that's only gonna get worse if Gibson's running it.

    There was representation, no doubt about that. But screentime is an entirely different thing.
    Conversely, the only criticism I've heard is Katana's role and that Croc joke. El Diablo was the star of the movie besides Deadshot and Harley.

The man can direct, no doubt, and WB going for him makes director driven not just a shallow slogan but a direction to be reinforced.

But the question here for me is, do we want a decent but not so experienced director with an emotional attachment to the characters? Or a great director that really don’t care about the material and has (perhaps) his own aspirations?

  Biggest challenges to Mel Gibson are source material (will he embrace it) and the desire to work in a sandbox continuity. Also being a sequel doesn't help. He should've directed the first one, would've got a clean slate.

Man Without a Face- Biggest issue is that Mask did it first and better. It's solid but pretty forgettable.
Braveheart- Historically inaccurate as hell and celebrates Scottish nationalism and English prejudice, but it's epic scale can't be denied.
Passion of the Christ- 2/3rds of it is torture porn and almost completely ignores the teachings of it's subject.
Apocalypto- Perfect study of how civilizations crumble and how people undermine the needs of their world. For my money it's his best film
Hacksaw Ridge- Kind of contradicts it's subject's message about the importance of pacifism with it's over emphasis on how real the violence is (The slow motion sequence of the man on fire is a little much), but it's still a solid study on what type of soldier's journey through the system that doesn't care for people like him and has the best performance of Andrew Garfield's career.
Gibson's a solid director, but he has his flaws.

I don't understand how he could say he hates superheroes. He's done 3 films with George Miller and 4 with Richard Donner. Both of them have been involved with DC in huge capacities. There had to be at least one conversation about Batman or Superman with either of them over the years that could make him understand why they're important. If not, Donner especially should give him a call.

SUICIDE SQUAD 2?
I would much prefer WB concentrate on the core films that will make or break the DCEU. Getting MOS 2 and CYBORG up and running, finally getting THE FLASH sorted filmmaker wise, and ensuring we know exactly what's going on with THE BATMAN are all crucial to the success of DCEU, not, in truth, SUICIDE SQUAD 2.

Gibson probably wants to do SS 2 to get funding for his epic Viking movie he's trying to make with Braveheart writer Randall Wallace.
As Suicide Squad showed, SS2 is worth doing, because it will make a lot of money, even if it's bad, and Gibson won't be blamed for it sucking.
A hit blockbuster is just what Gibson needs to get his passion projects greenlit.

If Gibson ultimately takes the job(I don't expect he will) then it would be the text book definition of hypocrisy given his statements just last year, not to mention he openly bashed BvS, which is set in the same universe that he will be working in if he does get the gig so it'd be kinda awkward.
I really don't want another SS movie. The concept of SS kinda works as a nice one-off standalone that's a detour from the main narrative of this universe but making another franchise off it seems like over-kill; I want another Superman movie and I detest the character getting sidetracked in order to make room for all this other stuff.
