We've seen images from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice highlighting what things looked like before and after the special effects, but director Zack Snyder just took it a step further!
Snyder just shared an 12 minute video that shows what Batman v Superman looked like before and after the CGI. "This is a look behind the curtain and what my amazing VFX team is able to achieve… they are simply amazing," he said on Twitter.

Zack continues to do the same by challenging the audience in a way he isn´t supposed to, despite TDK being seen as the "New Godfather". His favorite film Excalibur, a clear insertion for BvS, got the same treatment too back in 1981. The more things change...

BvS is already a modern day parallel for Excalibur 1982, and often pointed out for that. The film is even referenced in the opening and a few scenes are lifted out of it, nearly down to the color composition.
I don't mean creatively, I mean critically. When are we suppose to accept the coming of this film as a classic, given most people that have an inkling about films think it's total trash?

Excalibur was critically trashed back in the day, so was The Empire Strikes Back, Citizen Kane won no awards, The Shining was up for a Worst Picture Razzy and so on.

Empire Strikes Back was not critically trashed--it had mixed reviews at best and was obviously wildly popular (though yes, it's reknown has grown in 20+ years), and though Citizen Kane won no awards, it was deeply respected by auteurs long before audiences warmed to it.
Shining? well, it's still garbage and always was (at least in the eyes of those who love the book) ~ hahahaha
Empire was NOT well received in 1980, i did my homework there, as the contemporary reviews were mixed to negative. The consensus was that it failed to live up to the childlike magic of the unknown of the original and the story was too grim. We are talking about arguably the most well regarded film sequel of all time here! That´s why Lucas was so hands on with Jedi. VI seemed to be rewritten from the ground up due to that, as the original idea was to make a serious western. Look it up.
If you think that forcing the crew to reassess the sequel is no big deal, then i honestly don´t know what to say.

Phantom Menace though got glowing review when it came out! Ebert even gave it a 3,5/4. Well, we all make mistakes.
Kubrick especially had a troubled reception with critics and watchdogs back in the day. 2001 was seen as a vapid effects film, while Lolita and A Clockwork Orange nearly ended his career. But look at his legacy now! Him being called the greatest director of all time seems appropriate to me and even BvS pays homage to him with certain Lex scenes.
Some of the most famous painters and composers died poor and with little recognition and so on.
PS: All my comments here are about professional film criticism, not the popular opinion. BIG difference there.
Good for you, you know how well these movies were received back in the day. But again, what does any of this have to do with BvS? Are you saying that BvS is the next Empire in making - that it will be critically appraised in the years to come? Prove it. You need to SHOW WHY you think it will be the next Empire Strikes Back, and not tantamount to Attack of the Clones.

level of BvS. for being incoherent, stupid, and badly put together. ESB was criticized as not on par with the 1977 film and for an ending that--at the time--no one really understood. franchises that left you hanging were not the norm.
and yes, Siskel and Ebert sum it up well. find their ESB review online. one liked it, the other didn't. no revelation there at all.
more to the point, BvS critics not only skew negative, but again, vehemently so. on multiple levels. the movie is loathed. critics of ESB were not impressed, but they didn't excoriate it.
BvS really is like the Star Wars PT; it's not going to get better over time--it's only going to get worse.
No one has to like BvS but the director´s cut showed on multiple year´s end lists (certainly on mine), while already becoming a cult film. It only needed to make money, which it did, it already has a sizable fanbase (some of it may be ironic) and the film can only grow from here as no one can shut up about it. Snyder went thought his before and his formerly lukewarm received Watchmen is now treated as a masterpiece... hm.
That´s the power of pure polarization. The film is already in the history books and that is all i wanted. Besides a sequel.

Most of them should have grown up with such! Movies don´t start like IV, not even today. the title "IV: A New Hope" was added April 10, 1981 for the re-lease promoting ESB.
at which point we all understood it was now a trilogy, though we still couldn't figure out why it was starting at IV.
The crawl is taken from Flash Gordon, a serial from 1936. How am i "revisionist" to point out the existence of a then 4 decade old film franchise. That SW or Indy are modeled after 30s and 40s cinema was a known quantity, even in 1977, as Lucas was always upfront about that. Hardly trivia either, as IV is one of the very first blockbusters of all time (probably the 2nd ever, after Yaws). Failing to get the basic intent of Lucas, while being payed to review his work, is frankly embarrassing.
Then we have The Italian Job from 1969, that gave us the word cliffhanger ending. A definitive one actually. Novels did it first of course and LotR was adapted in 1978 with aborted sequels in mind.
SW was also described as a 9 part series around the time of release, while V had a sequel announced before the film came out. There are YouTube videos of Hamill talking about doing the prequels in 1980:

PS: The Nightline ep. where S&E defended the core concept of Star Wars is from 1980. On public TV, when there were like 4 channels or something. That debate was a big deal and why is that date so familiar...
there was no "IV: A New Hope" ~ the mere fact of a crawl is not what you were arguing. you were arguing that the enumeration was an "obvious" indicator of a larger story. movie crawls don't automatically = serial. you can't just admit you were wrong about the title? come on.
look, i admire that you obviously know some cinema history, but no, cliffhanger does not come from the Italian Job, it predates that by a lot, in fact, from the silent era's Perils of Pauline. 1914 or 15, i think. my point is that it wasn't fashionable in 1980 and no one would have expected it because, again, movie serials were not a thing anymore, so matter how much George Lucas likened this to Flash Gordon. not to mention most people wouldn't have even known that because there was no Google or pervasive information network system that broadly drubbed you over the head with every bit of detail about a film production.

Watchman was a straight-up adaptation from a brilliant work that was butchered in the cutting room. the restoration just revealed it to be a well-made straight up adaptation of a brilliant work. BvS has no such foundation to save it. it has good actors in poorly written roles, a paper thin story badly scripted, and too much action for no other reason that to "look cool". i don't think it's great filmmaking by any stretch of the imagination.
by all means enjoy it: i don't criticize anyone who does. we like what we like. i'd spend more time liking it and less time defending it. good stuff doesn't need this much defense, frankly.
BvS barely features action scenes when counted against the run-time. More so in the UC, until the 3rd act. Event that one isn´t too long once you start counting the minutes. That was a major criticism (justified too, if you consider the film´s name) but when did i ever "defend" BvS or any anything else on this site. Even my Imdb review goes into the reasons why the film was disliked and how it is not a mass market film. I frankly never expected the film to get much acclaim in the first place but the vitriol and frankly slander was still surprising. I further NEVER cared about what other people think about the purely subjective experience of entertainment. Who am i, the tough police? And how could i ever have an opinion of my own if i needed validation to go into the other end.
I for example didn´t care for the 2016 horror darling The Witch (91% on RT) and you don´t want to hear my opinion on Oscar Bait. Even my mini review of JLD has a negative remark about 2016´s most acclaimed anime Kimi no Na wa. I literality linked you to a cotemporary interview that said that Star Wars was this... Expanded Universe right from the start. The original script for IV was even more epic (it´s rubbish and on wookieepedia) than nearly all current films combined. The original aspirations were at the edge of insanity... That´s why IV begins beyond in-media-res. Splinter of the Mind's Eye (the original script for V) and obviously the Christmas Special were 2 years old by 1980 too. Lucas had a complete sequel scripts ready before toys could be bought for the franchise primer! IV was even reedited while it was in the cinemas, but that was more about technicalities.

How am i supposed to know if BvS will get a kinder reassessment in time. Crazier things happen, Heaven's Gate of all films is now somehow seen as good. I just know that the core audience of this site had a near 180% when the UC came out. MoS is now even seen as a misunderstood film. Where were these people in 2013....

Sequels were nothing special then either, Superman 1978 deliberately featured unresolved plot threads for example. They just weren´t prestigious.
The Pauline link goes over how that serial series didn´t quite use the open ending format, that´s the point. Someone else might be interested in learning film history.
Edit: I forgot to mention that SW was a comic juggernaut since the late 70s too. The old Marvel book even predicted the 2nd Death Star.

yes, we knew it was trilogy when ESB came out. that still did not prepare anyone for the sheer bombshell of how that film ended. your comparison to Superman exactly makes my point. those movies are complete: their narrative throughlines have a beginning and middle and end. even the fact of Zod being cast into space in the first film could have been considered concluded as it was prelude to the destruction of Krypton and nobody would have thought it was there to set up for another film.
Star Wars ended with two massive events, neither of which are resolved in the narrative. it's one thing to say: well, i know the Rebels aren't going to win because it's a trilogy and presumably they'll still be fighting in the next one. it's an entirely different thing to have one of your heroes dispatched with a bounty hunter and the other one handed the tragic shocker that his enemy is his father who wants to convert him to the Dark side. those are major catastrophic events that have zero resolution. there IS no comparison to that in the popular films of the era. people went to the theatre expecting to see a complete story. which is what i said at the beginning and it remains true.

This NYT review for SW V by one of their most important writers (or so wiki tells me) is a perfect summary of how the film was seen by the press:

Familiar sounding tunes and their scathing review for Daredevil S02 (11/10) is worth a look too.
Even so, it wasn't as poorly received as BvS was, and had an oscar nomination for best screenplay. BvS got zero oscar nominations, was trashed by the critics, and audiences kinda liked it... The comparison is completely void. You need substance, proof and shit like that for those arguments to work. You have nothing to tell you that BvS will be seen as a masterpiece in years to come.
Stanley Kubrick's The Shining wasn't well received when it first came out, got no Oscar or Golden Globe nominations, and was instead nominated for Worst Director at the Razzies. John Carpenter's The Thing also opened to negative reviews when it first came out, being called disappointing with "poor characterizations and illogical plot elements" as well as "[aspiring] to be the quintessential moron movie of the 80s."
Both of those movies, as well as others that have been mentioned in other comments, are now considered to be great movies in cinema history and have gotten better treatment and better reviews from critics in recent years than when they were first released. Is this the "substance, proof, and shit like that" that you were looking for?
That's nothing. Absolutely void and empty of any kind of evidence. That's like saying that I could be the next Steve Jobs because I'll start my company in my own garage as well. Just because a movie wasn't as well received when it came out and was later seen as a classic, it doesn't mean these movies will. In fact, because they are so relying on cgi that even today looks fake, it's more of an appropriate statement that they won't age nearly that well to begin with.
Facts are facts, though: No zack snyder movie is seen as a classic today, and he's never even done the movie to prove anyone wrong on this subject. The argument that "it could happen because it has happened before" is completely fabricated just to make ya'll feel better and validated about a movie you like that was completely trashed by critics and was lukewarm at best for audiences.
Your argument that it won't happen is just as silly tho. You could be the next Steve Jobs just likely as you could be another average Joe. That argument isn't fabricated just because you can't think of any examples that support it. Also, a lot of classic movies with dated effects are still held in high regard today, regardless of how they look. Fake looking effects doesn't mean those movies won't age well, it just means that there effects won't look as good compared to whatever effects are invented in the future.
Firstly, let me just debunk that argument of how it won't age. You look at star wars, and yes, somethings feel dated, sure, but the miniatures, action set pieces and everything about them feel impressive because they feel real.
Now look at the prequels and tell me you can say the same. You can't, and they were top of the line at the time of release. CGI tends to age horribly and even though it is impossible to make a Superman movie without it, it really doesn't bode that well.
Either way, the facts that matter are the present ones, the ones you can take as absolute truths, and anything else you and other fanboys claim is nothing but wishful thinking right now.

There's been no indication that he's "dwelling on the past." He's barely active on social media and has rarely given an interview since Justice League started filming. That alone should be telling.
This same team is probably working on Justice League right now. Since Zack can't make a highlight reel of their work on Justice League, he is thanking them by sending out an appreciation for all the great work they do.
You didn´t even watch the dedication in the video, as it is dedicated to Zack. This ain´t his work and the person who cut this reel is listed too.
The DCEU CG team further deserves all the praise it can get.
It's a shame that such a good movie is so critically panned because people get offended when they're forced to think during a comic book movie. What worked so well with Nolan's Batman films is that they were so grounded that it made the movies seem like crime drama/action flicks and therefore easy to follow and understand. Knock Zack and co. if you'd like but BvS was one of the most intricate and involving movies of the year. This movie had more balls than all of last year's comic book movies combined.
TDK movies were a thousand times more intelligent than anything BvS even dared to present. 'Muh symbolism' actually doesn't make the plot that smart. The interrogation scene alone was better written and more intelligent than all the meaningless Jesus references Zack could shove down our throats.

I'm not saying it's so great that people don't understand it. I'm saying that critics created this shit storm of people hating on it. They're so far up their own assholes that they got angry when Zack, a director that does not usually get reviewed well, made a movie that was more detailed and story driven than they would expect from a comic book movie. It offended them because it wasn't what they expected so they shit on it. I'm not saying it's the greatest movie ever made, I understand its flaws. But overall I thought it is a lot better than what the popular vote was. We've seen how popular votes work in one country. Negativity feeds off of envy and passion. Passionate comic book fans, and envious critics who could never make it as a director so they spend their time behind a computer screen bashing what they never have and never will have the opportunity to make in their lifetime.

Look, buddy, it's AWESOME that someone liked this film where I could not. Really. I am GLAD that you enjoyed it. I wish I could. It's got nothing to do with popularity, or passion and envy. It's got to do with something fundamentally simple. Does it work as a film? No, it doesn't. And honestly, the idea that Batman fans and (and Superman fans) are behind this movie is serious BS. The crew is clearly proud of the film, as they keep bringing it up nearly a year in.
That color was constantly added (!) to the shots needs to be noted and the water simulation bit alone should justify CG as an artistic tool.

I don't understand your point about RT. I don't like it all the time, but it's the best for showing what critics think about the film. It's pretty clear for BvS. It has popular support? Being under contract for two films shouldn't stop being contracted for another film, unless the studio doesn't want you. Why has his role been reduced by WB? Why was he undermined during the JL filming with the DCEU shake-up? Batman on Film reported this, and even though I don't like the site they get things right all the time. For every peer who supports him, there are others that are clear about his work: from Alan Moore, to Jeremy Irons and Stan Sebastian). I have no problem with the idea that professional will stick together - that's a fact of life, only that doesn't even seem to be the case with Snyder.

Well I'm a Batman fan for a looong time ago and I really liked the movie (the UC even more). And the same way you saw critics explaining things, I also saw critics and bloggers trashing the movie even before the release. They were in with a made up mind and just went to see what they could nitpick (for example in Collider). At the same time I also saw several professional critics giving the movie a good rating (for example in Empire magazine).
My point on RT was that numbers show that audiences liked it. But of course now you don't want to take that number into account. Why not? Because it shows that people actually liked the movie in spite of what critics said? If you don't like that number, well look into any site who let people say what they think about the movie. Even in sites like Comicbookmovie, where the comment sections are the most toxic you could see (in any topic) there were polls where a vast majority gave the movie good ratings. The movie was liked, independently of the vocal angry majority claims.
Zack Snyder's role hasn't been diminished and I don't know why you are hell-bent on saying that. He is producer and story-writer in several more movies. That JL 2 hasn't been given to him doesn't mean anything. At this point anything can be still possible and, as I said several times now, he only signed to direct 3 DCEU movies and the next movie he is doing is still under WB, he is one of his money makers after all.

You see, before this year his movies were considered good to great. Dawn of the Dead is still considered one of the finest remakes ever made. 300 was a masively popular movie, it was talked about for years, lots tried to copy its style (from a perspective, you can even say it created school). Likable characters and epic in scope, the vast majority liked the movie.
The same for Watchmen. It's true it wasn't as popular as 300, but its popularity has grown through the years (quite a cult movie) with great characters and acting, and he was praised for filming a movie which was deemed unfilmable.
Now the case with Man of Steel. Was it perceived as bad in its release as it is today? Back in the day, I swear there wasn't as any hate as it is today, and the movie pages I visit (and I visit a lot) gave it good scores. Even IGN, which is nowadays a Marvel's butt-licking, DCEU hate cesspool, gave it a 9. A 9! And this is
talking about webpages, word of mouth was good too. Of course there were people who disliked it. But it was the minority.

MoS received 55% rotten. That seems fair. A lot of it was good but only because Nolan had leashed Snyder from making too many stupid mistakes and got him to tell a disciplined story. As it happens, the worst parts of the film are to do with structural editing which is a post-production issue for the director, not the producer. I go back to RT and other aggregate scores from critics because they are the best in offering an overall and IMPARTIAL picture. Suckerpunch epitomizes Zack Snyder. All style with cool costumes and props, no substance. He can’t tell a story even if the whole of Western civilization depended on it. Let me tell where I come from: I really wanted to like this film, but I was worried about Snyder since he is so divisive among fans, and his films are incoherent story wise. I wanted to like this film so much as a Batman fan of nearly 30 years. I’m 35. This movie shocked me. I couldn’t express why it was bad. Do you know what I did? I read up on filmmaking and storytelling. I learned about the difference between story and plot, the difference between characterization and character development. The difference between motifs and themes. I understood arcs and editing processes. I even read up on camera-craft. What I’m trying to say is this: I could not disentangle being a Batman fan and not liking this movie for whatever reason, so instead of sticking my head in the sand and going tribal, I LEARNED what was wrong with the film by understanding film. 12 months later, I’ve found I am better able to identify a good film from bad, and equally able to enjoy them. Am I saying you are not that person? No, I don’t honestly know you. But, I do know that most of the people I’ve spoke to who like this film don’t have a clue about storytelling and what makes a film great. They are so emotionally wrapped up by this (and no doubt feel under pressure from some baiting Marvel fans) that they immediately go to their respective corners without hesitation or circumspection. I’m better than this because I use my rationale over my emotions. Most fans on here can’t.

Look for what happened in comicbook.com weeks ago, where they held a poll for what comicbook movie was the best from 2016, and a frigging majority vote for BvS. Do you know what happened next? Comicbook retired the poll and gave the prize to Civil War. How do you explain that?

That’s a really poor argument. Counter-example: Star Wars fans were clamming for the Revenge of the Sith trailer too, did they like Lucas and his prequels? Resoundingly, no. I’m looking forward to the JL, just as I was looking forward to the BvS trailer. Both times extremely apprehensive. Does that mean I therefore like Snyder? No, and that’s really the worst argument I’ve seen on here. Come on, you are better than this!

Like I said, I would need to see this, AND you would need to show how this is indicative of any global bias against BvS. ‘One swallow a summer doth not make’.
You are repeatedly trying to defend BvS reception, and yet everytime you do you belie your prejudices and cognitive biases for the film. You complain about RT, but only because it comprehensively destroy any chance you have to say this film was good. You complain about a conspiracy, about that comicbook site, or this publication, yet cannot account for the vast amount of literature against the film.

As far as I know, comicbook.com doesn't have a comment section, so there are no trolls like you say, and from my trips there, I know its community (including their staff) usually like DCEU films. So there's a proof you wanted.
Look, as I said, I told you what I know. I can show you polls, numbers and so on, but if you are going to say again that they ae just from fanboys, what do you want me to do then? Those numbers are the one who clearly show Synder has support (and this is what we started arguing initially, don't forget that). People outside these threads usually like him too. Well, if HE wrote about bias then it MUST be true! It’s a little strange that no other evidence of this ‘conspiracy’ exists on the web. I can’t speak Spanish, but again this isn’t SUFFICIENT OR CONCLUSIVE evidence. You show me a screenshot of the polls with BvS in the lead, but it’s not clear how long this snapshot was taken before closed. So what are you trying to say, things in the lead MUST stay in the lead and win? I’ve checked the website too, and there doesn’t seem to be much interest in the comment pages from Batman fans. If the snapshot is true than thousands of Batman fans would be complaining. But it’s just one person moaning that BvS was in the lead. In any case, like I said, assuming this is true (and that’s a stretch at this point), how does ONE poll somehow translate to a massive conspiracy again BvS? How do you account for the tidal wave of critics, the vast majority ripping this film? How do you account for the divisiveness in fandom over him? You can’t, and that’s telling.
Let’s review your evidence so far: You said that critics had it in for this film, and your support for this is to claim that SOME critics were criticizing the movie before it was released. But what would you expect them to do if they saw it early? LEGO Batman critics have said positive things, but the film isn’t released yet. Also, you eschew the critics/bloggers that were going mad about this film, saying it’s better than TDK?
You then point to publications that gave it good reviews (3 stars on Empire equals ‘OK’), but refuse to accept other publications and their negative reviews. You then criticize RT itself, even though it simply aggregates reviews.
You then claim that Snyder is popular, yet you cannot prove that he is not divisive, and in fact prove yourself that he is divisive. Again, why are you no longer defending the fact that only 6,000 fans wanted him to do THE BATMAN? Nor are you able to show that popularity somehow means good for the film. It doesn’t. Every argument that you try to spin about Snyder, his films, and his so-called popularity is failing.

Zack Snyder has made someone in the critic-sphere mad. He's genuinely adapted great movies from their original comics.
He has an intense and gritty visual style. I really think most critics don't like that, it's too much for their sensitive snowflake eyes and ears… Or something, I have no idea, but this guy is so polarizing.
