'LEGO Batman' director wants to make a live-action movie in the DCEU

January 29, 2017

Early buzz for The LEGO Batman Movie indicates that it's going to be a big hit with critics and the box office, and director Chris McKay already has his sights on his next project.

On Twitter this evening, a fan said that he'd love for McKay to direct a live-action movie in the DC Extended Universe. "It's a long shot but I'd like to be a part of it somehow," McKay replied.

The fan followed up and asked if he could start a petition to DC Films co-head Geoff Johns to help make that a reality. McKay politely declined, but said he plans on meeting with Johns and making a pitch for a movie in the DCEU.

The Flash script is currently being rewritten and is in need of a director. McKay is best known for his animated work, but maybe he'd be a good fit there. Would you like to see McKay direct a live-action movie in the DCEU? Let me know in the comments below.

Exactly. The treatment they started with came from Lord & Miller, who also did The Lego Movie. Should be right in his wheelhouse if the new script is keeping the same flavor.

If he can direct, why not. The Flash is probably a good choice. Though I can see Kevin Smith as a possible choice if they let him. Chris McKay may plan on pitching a different movie entirely.

Hmmm. Didn't know that. The lighter tone I'm sure Warner wants with The Flash would suit him after how he handled last Supergirl episode.

Doubt Kevin Smith would even want it. His biggest movie, Cop Out, was an absolute disaster at the box office and critically, and he hated the experience. I doubt he'd want to make such a huge project, especially if it was just to be controlled. I think he really prefers to do the tv shows because they have a clear vision, and tv directors have less responsability (the show runner is the highest position there). To be frank, I love Smith, but I'd rather have someone more experienced with this kind of movie. If Brad Bird won't do a Superman sequel, why not have him for Flash? The guy is brilliant!

Brad Bird for Flash wouldn't be a bad idea at all, less so considering he worked with another speedster before ;p

Good point. If he can pull off the seriousness and light heartedness that came with the Incredibles, I can see him doing the Flash.

I think he would be a good fit, but maybe with The Incredibles 2 he doesn't have the schedule to do it, and WB seems more interested in unexperienced filmmakers so they can push them around... I don't know, but if they let Brad Bird into the DCEU, they would definitely up the ante, regarding their director choices.

Yeah, maybe The Incredibles can't let him join something like this, he could be a great choice and more I think I about it the more I see him the right choice.
BTW, I think that Mckay could do a good job being so close to Lord and Miller, and they would have an experienced director with DC characters.
I have to disagree with your point on WB only hiring unexperienced filmmakers though. Snyder, Wan, Affleck, Jenkins, Ayer, etc have, in one degree or another, quite the experience. And even the lesser ones can show great work. Just look at what the Russos brothers did with Captain America, and they were less experienced that those hired by WB.
Anyway, let's hope that they can deliver on their respective movies, at least I think they can ;)

Affleck doesn't really have experience with this type of film, but since he is a very good director with a firm grip on storytelling I don't count him. Wan is another obvious exception. But Ayer has no place in movies like this, Jenkins has barely even directed a movie, let alone a blockbuster this size, and Snyder has never once told a well crafted story, so his experience with special effects makes for a style over substance movie, which should never be the case. As for the writers, just look at most of the writers' resumee. They barely ever done anything, and it's almost always crap that fills up their movie writing career.
In the case of Marvel, they have a ton of people responsible for the movies and the Directors have less input I would say. The problem with WB is that they, at least until now, have been on a ship with either too many captains or no captains at all. While Marvel has been steadily going with a firm hand on the wheel.

Well now, I think saying Snyder has never told a good story is reaching a bit. The only movie I can really say is bad story-telling is Sucker Punch, which happens to be the only one written by him. I think he has made good adaptations of different sources like 300 or Watchmen, or adapting another movie like Dawn of the Dead.
Comparing BvS TC to the Ultimate Cut, I'd say that yes, the former lacked several plot elements, but I think that the UC fixed that, but in this case the blame is on WB, as they ordered the movie cut mere months before the release.
Anyway, let's just wait and see. I think WB is learning from previous mistakes, and maybe from now on the movies are seen more favourably and not as divisive as they have been

Well, in terms of him writing a movie, no he's never ever written a good script/story. In terms of adapting, he was neither the writer, nor there was much to do in terms of original work/writing there, and frankly 300 barely has a story to begin with (and none of the characters are really fleshed out besides being muscular) and Watchmen had it's work cut out for it, story-wise. Regarding BvS, even the UC is filled with plot holes. Yes, it explains a bit more of Lex's plan, but it simply makes it even more convoluted and cartoonish for me. It reaches a point where Lex is not smart, he is omnipotent/omnipresent. Also, the only thing WB can be blamed on in that case is that they hired fucking Zack Snyder for it, because an R rated, 3 hour Batman v Superman movie? Only someone with serious mental issues would ever think that would be released in theatres.
I do agree that WB may have learned from these mistakes, after seeing BvS underperform. I really hope Wonder Woman is good, I can't wait for it. But my hype for this movie universe took a serious hit because of their mistakes.

We will have to agree to disagree here, as I see Snyder as very competent and saw Luthor as being very Luthor-y in BvS UC ;)
An yeah I'm really looking forward to WW. And to think a year ago I wasn't into this charactee at all... (this has changed thanks to BvS and DC Rebirth

I kinda saw Luthor as very Eisenberg-y... Kinda saw lack of direction in that character. And I don't mind him producing these movies at all, helping out the less experienced directors with special effects and whatnot. But as a storyteller, he has a lack of understanding regarding pacing, which is one of the most important things when writing a story. For all it's worth, I fucking loved Man of Steel, and defended it as well as I could back in the day, to this day. I can aknowledge it's faults, but I think it had a terrific villain (Zod was a much better and more compelling villain than anything the mcu movies have shown me), and a nice origin for Superman. I just think he isn't the right man for the director's chair, is all.

Totally agree with you on Man of Steel. It has flaws, yes, but I will never understand the hate it receives NOW (when it was first released I swear there wasn't so much complaining like nowadays).
You should understand, then, why I will defend BvS like you do with MoS. Yes it has flaws (and perdonally don't like Luthor's quirkiness although I liked his plan), but I will always see this movie as unfairly panned, even though I understand why some people dislike it (but I've seen few that compalin about logically)

BvS is a different beast. I cannot possibly call it a good movie. It clearly should have been 2 or even 3 different movies at the end of the day... Too overblown, too much going on, and no clear direction nor character development going around, and I was ready to fucking love it after Man of Steel.

wouldn't mind at all if he directed the flash, the flash has always been a pretty humorous dude at times and I'm sure McKay would bring that humor to live-action

Give him teen titans. If this batman lego film is good then he obviously has an eye for comedy that appeals to younger and older generations.

I'd give him a shot at some DC comicbook animations first and see if he can deal with telling a compelling, serious story.
I'm sure he'll do fine anyway with films like THE FLASH, SHAZAM, BLACK ADAM or BOOSTER GOLD.

The scarf is the modern equivalent of the French beret. It's basically the same as holding up a sign that says,"Check it out. I'm artistic, bro." XD
