The Flash still needs a director, but Warner Bros. is taking time to get the script right first.

Variety is reporting that Joby Harold has been hired to do a page-one rewrite of the script. According to Wikipedia, a page-one rewrite means that the script's central premise or characters are good but the script is otherwise unusable, so Harold will do an entirely new draft.

Variety says that Warner Bros. didn't like the direction that former director/writer Rick Famuyiwa took the script in, which is why they hired Harold for the rewrite.

The Flash was scheduled for a March 2018 release date, but is now pushed back to a later date. Warner Bros. will release their Tomb Raider reboot in March 2018 instead.

      The comic version is neither, and the DCEU version seems to go the same way TAS went, by combining Wally´s and Barry´s mannerisms. My bigger concern is to get Flash the A-list superhero right, as the CW show is struggling there.

Sorry, but what's so depthful and complicated about "villain tries to make the world hate hero. tries to make another hero hate hero. through convoluted, omnipotent, and impossible ways, villain gets the two heroes fighting. heroes actually bond, foiling the plan, BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! villain had a non-sensical and stupid plan that the screenwriter forgot to explain because there needs to be a huge fight in the end. shitty, cgi monster appears. Heroes that bonded defeat it with the help of a woman hero. main hero dies because self-sacrifice usually gets a good response out of the general audiences. the end"
          Sorry, but it was a very generic film 'hidden' in part because of all the unresolved subplots and convoluted messes it tried to create. Oh, and all that under a pretty little pretentious "I think I'm smart than other people, but I'm actually a fucking hack" screenplay... What's complicated again? Oh yeah, wearing the suits must have been complicated for the actors, no doubt.

            I think my most favorite label slapped on this movie by fans is "political drama".

            I fvcking love that. I mean, once someone utters that, it's just so easy to dismiss everything else they say because it is absolutely clear they do not understand movies or movie genres for that matter.

            Having dramatic scenes in a congress doesn't equal political drama, same as having a conversation about AI in Marvel movies doesn't make them "conceptual sci-fi". Calling this a political drama is simply a sign of poor excuses or misunderstanding of the movie at hand. Hell, Watchmen were closer to a political drama and nobody calls it that.

            I also think that most of the people who say this don't get that if we go down this road, we can call Civil War a political drama as well! It has legislatures, it has congress meetings, it has policies... Sh*t, I mean why not? It also has an airport, so maybe it is a documentary about aviation as well!

      Why are you here then? Following the production of media you don´t care for is as big a waste of time as there can be. You will be throwing days of you life down the drain, if the man-hours are combined. There is no lack of alternatives to the DCEU films either.
      I for example think that the US Ghost in the Shell film looks to be a total abortion. That´s why i stopped clinking on news items about it and why i will never watch it.

    Good move to just do a fresh rewrite. Might as well since the the film is delayed with no new director picked yet and Ezra will film Fantastic Beasts sequel soon. Good to be patient and not rush the project.

    To me the best and most plausible story arc to bounce off of would be flashpoint. Without giving any spoilers, you've already got two class actors/actresses for the Bruce/Martha Wayne plot, plus the story is a classic. Opens up the DCEU to different dimensions (Earth 1, 3 ect). But hey ho, we'll just have to wait and see.

      I think this is a good idea too. The movie can be bookended by Affleck's Batman and keep it a self-contained Flashpoint story. Gadot and Mamoa could show up for a bit during the Flashpoint shenanigans. Cyborg could still be there for Thomas.

      But mainly, I would absolutely love to see the Flashpoint Batman story, and get that ending on the big screen.

      It could be such a cool story - unique and massively entertaining. It's just a whole lot to cram into 2-3 hours, but if the animation folks can do it.....

        Yeah, totally. You can't really go wrong with that story arc, especially the way the DCEU Justice League is assembled currently anyhow. i'd like to see someone like Ed Norton for Reverse/Zoom, and obvs Negan as the Bats. So much potential. You can't build a Flash movie on Cap Boomerang or Cold ect, too street level. the Flash movie totally fits the theme of mind bending, alt timeline, dare i say 'Inception-ish' quality. Anyway, ramble there, haha apologies.

    This could be both good and bad. It really depends on how the initial script looked, what will the new version look like and if the rewrite interferes too much with the initial vision.

    Given the WB/DC track record of artistic integrity, I am more partial to thinking that this is indeed yet another colossal clusterfvck, but maybe they learned from their mistakes. One can dream.

    So long as changes like this aren't happening DURING production, there is little to worry about. Good movies go through tons of rewrites and not every director is suited to direct every script. Let's just agree to let them do their jobs.

    Some of Joby Harold´s work is good, he know genre film too. Edge of Tomorrow itself got rewriten by him for example and that one worked out and got Cruise on board. Good on them for going back, as i would rather have a delayed film than a rushed one. Good luck to Lara too, her latest reboot deserves a good adaptation.
    I would have loved to see the Famuyiwa treatment but you can´t have them all.

      They started over and the start is off to do Potter Begins 2 in the meantime. The foundation as of now is JLA, a quality cast and an effects house. As Chris wrote, Harold will rewrite the 1st act and then make up his own film for the rest. The film is thus again a whole new ballgame. Just one with millions wasted on pre-production. It worked for Ant-man though.

      While this is true to some extent, you also have to understand that their track record of studio shenanigans, rewrites, reshoots and different versions is not exactly stellar.

      If there were rewrites / reshoots during BvS, I guess nobody would go into the mocking / panic mode, right? Because back then they weren't signs of a trend of these movies. But by now... well, it is hard not to take it much, much more skeptically and cynically.

        But those changes occurred during production. People complained that Ayer should've had more time on SS's s script. Flash is being pushed back, and it seems that they're taking their time with it now. Despite the track record, critics are getting what they wanted, but they still want to complain.

            I can definitely see where you're coming from but i agree with tomy. Its about consistency, something WB has shown a complete lack of. WB has changed their mind on 2 directors already and now they want to change the script. If they actually wanted to improve they would have given Famuyiwa more time for the script, someone who more than proved their talent with the vision and sure-handed direction displayed in Dope. The constant state of DCEU has been a knee-jerk overreaction where they scrap everything instead of trying to build upon what they've already established.

            But Famuyiwa dI'd have time. We only know that WB didn't like most of what he wrote. We can only assume that he and WB couldn't come to an agreement on some more script changes. And it makes sense for WB to change it once he left. Again, this kind of thing happened to Ant-Man, and even Joss Wed on said that he loved Wright's script.

            They didnt like what they read and overreacted, axing a good director and casting the movie into limbo. Marvel isnt a fair comparison because theyve proven they know know what theyre doing, where WB seems to make the wrong decision every time.

            I suppose we'll see if the movie ever comes out. What DCEU needs is one undisputably good movie to bring back confidence. I think instead of meddling so much, committing to a single director and whatever vision he has would be the best approach. Yet, they give off the impression of a group of headless chickens dipping their fingers into everything

            But that's not an overreaction. If a director and studio can't see eye to eye on something, then usually, the director leaves the project. This is how the industry works. And Marvel has had problems before Ant-Man. Ask Mickelson Rourke.

            And personally, while I have never watched Dope, I didn't think Famiyuwa was the right choice for Flash.

            With a scheduled March 2018 (just over a year away) release date, for them to fire their 2nd director, rewrite the entire script and push back the release date. This all seems like a part of the normal process to you? Thats not how good movies are made.

            Again, Marvel has proved they know what theyre doing. And when all else fails, they have a generic formula to fall back on. As of right now, you cant justify what WB is doing using them as an example.

            The movie is being pushed back. From comicbookglobal.com, the film is being pushed back to 2019.

            And for a final time, Marvel has made good calls on previous films which warrants the lack of reaction when they did. WB has not earned the confidence of the audience, only making the wrong choices. I hope they do, but it starts with having faith. It seems they lost it all after BvS and lack the courage to do so again and it has made everything infinitely worse

      Scorsese´s latest film Silence (the 3rd best film of 2016) was in development for 2 decades but look at it now. The academy snubbed it hard with only 1 nomination. Eyes Wide Shut lavished a long for at least a decade too. Not that blogger critics would know shit about the history of film.
      Batman Begins was a bitch to be birthed too. So were Batman 89 and Superman 78.

    Isn´t it weird that the Flash, of all films ran into serious trouble? I certainly didn´t see it coming!
    The 1st stooge director was a bit of a placeholder but that 3rd try will need to be the last.
    The CW makes it look so easy to put out an enjoyable Flash adaptation. Well done Mr. Berlanti but his show may have doomed the film to a degree, as WB will be forced to do something noticeably different.
    CW also never cancels anything, so the show will still be on by then.
    PS: Flash S03 is a bit pointless as of now.

    This is absolutely ok. Take your time with it. Get the script right, find a great director, and give us a movie worth waiting for. Fans shouldn't take this as a bad thing. Would i love it in theaters tomorrow, sure. But would i prefer it to be put off till later until it's quality? absolutely. WB, take your time and do it right :)

      Every single DCEU writer has written more than 1 film. Most are industry veterans too, and Joby Harold gave us Edge of Tomorrow. Aquaman´s Will Beall comes closest to your baseless complain but he is a seasoned tv writer / producer.

        Flash: Joby Harold (wrote 1 movie, its shit, EP for Edge of Tomorrow).
        Wonder Woman: Allan Heinberg (wrote zero movies, this is the first)
        Aquaman: Will Beall (wrote one movie, its mediocre)
        Shazam: Henry Gayden (wrote one movie, its a mediocre ET rip off)
        I mean, I like that warner bros is giving people the chance, but come on, they should pick better people for the DC movies

            couldnt they have hired people that have proven themselves good writers?? for example, why not Jane Goldman?? she is writing the fables movie for 3 years now. why not Flash?? also, if Warner bros is any inteligent, they would get people that Marvel screwed over. Natalie Portman could be perfect as Platinum, Haley Atwell as Snow White. For FUCK SAKE, the perfect person for Flash is Edgar Wright. They already hired Patty Jenkins who was supposed to direct Thor 2, why not Edgar Wright

            Edgar Wright couldn´t work in a team the last time and that Fable movie is still in development hell. That should tell you something... Portman is a great actress but how exactly did you arrive at Snow? (I read every Fable universe issue there.)
            What sort of selection is this?

            Complain about WB´s treatment of Vertigo instead.

            Patty Jenkins couldnt also "work in a team", yet she directed WW. All I am saying is, if your competitor is screwing over actresses (Natali Portman, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Hall), actors (Hugo Weaving, Christopher Eccleston), writers (Edgar Wright) and directors (um, Edgar Wright), maybe DC and WB should hire them

          Sirens only has Geneva Robertson-Dworet confirmed and she seems to be a hot commodity right now with 9 future films to her name. There is no past work to judge but that is kinda impressive.

          Allan Heinberg has been a tv writer since the 90s and his (great) comics are highly regarded. Yes, he is an actual comic writer, he even wrote Wonder Woman (!) but that arc sucked.

          Will Beall has been writing for Castle between 2009 and 2011, with 21 credits its total and Aquaman is his 2nd feature, as you pointed out.

          Henry Gayden is, as you pointed out, on his 2nd feature and his rip-off made good money. (Not that i will watch it).

          Then we have Goyer, Terrio and Ayer from past films. Even Snyder is getting story credit and so is Geoff. Small fries, eh?
