'Justice League' star Jason Momoa calls Zack Snyder a genius; comments on 'Aquaman'

The Hollywood Reporter published a new video interview with Justice League star Jason Momoa today.

When asked to describe Justice League director Zack Snyder in one word, Momoa picked "genius". Momoa couldn't comment on Aquaman director James Wan because they haven't worked together yet, but said he's met him and that he's a "sweet man".

Momoa said he's really excited for his own Aquaman movie, and that he starts shooting in about 4 or 5 months. That lines up with rumors that said the movie would begin filming in Australia around May.

"Justice League was amazing, but it's going to be fun to have the arc and talk about this guy's backstory and where he's going," Momoa said about Aquaman.

Snyder couldn't film a pair of sweaty socks right. He films actors like lawn furniture being urinated on in a rainstorm. Guy is completely clueless. To think that he took Batman AND Superman and churned out the worst blockbuster of the last 60 years. I hated MOS, but was shocked that he could make a dumber film. Snyder is that rare no- talent that hasn't been seen since AL Adamson shot "Dracula vs Frankenstein".

  Batman v Superman...the original R rated edition was pretty damn good. Man of Steel was a refreshing take on Superman. The only reason you didn't like it was because everybody didn't cheer everytime they saw Superman, his faffer diied and it's much easier to dis a show than back it up! I'm really excited to see how Snyder approaches the multiple-JLer-in-a-battle scenes!
As much fun as Avengers was, I didn't care for the swooping and panning camera going from Avenger to Avenger that Whedon used.
I know it's kinda hard to avoid the swooping and panning, but I loved Snyder's approach to the Doomsday battle, and am anxious to see the entire League in something similar.

  I prefer the Doomsday v Trinity battle as well. The shots followed characters' actions more smoothly and in a way that didn't lose the audience. Doomsday throwing a car at Wonder Woman, her slicing it in half, Doomsday being knocked down by WW and then speared by Superman, everything had an impact and physicality to it.

  The fight in BvS against Doomsday was amazing but ended to fast, WW flipping Doomsday up and Superman smashing him down, then that 3 combo with WW with the rope Batman with the Kryptinite then Superman with the spear, I'm just dying to see Flash fighting in speed.

    I'm sure it'll be difficult to avoid Quicksilver comparisons, but that style was absolutely brilliant and well-executed, and I'd be much more than happy to see Flash that way.
    The scene with Barry catching the batarang was so wonderful to watch!

      The "putty" parademon footsoldiers will be useful to show the whole team getting busy. I would love to see the furies, and granny goodness as well. It isn't to farfetched to think they'll touch gloves with darkseid too in some capacity, considering Snyder leaving this as a trilogy for now.

    A DD fight can't last long because it's DD, he's just too powerful to last long. Otherwise you get a contrived fight like Civil War where amazingly no on even gets a bruise in 17 minutes of combat!

I think you missed the point. If Nolan made a guy covered in make up and one dressed as a bat work. I don't see why Zack would have a problem when his movie is less realistic than Nolan's TDK trilogy.

    "When you look at that Martha scene for example, you see Bruce Wayne saying "Why did you say that? Why did you say that name!?" while Superman (Clark) as well talks about his mother." But this scene had literally two lines from Superman if I remember well: "Luthor wanted your life for hers, she's losing time" and "My mother needs me". Also, in Civil War - don't throw rocks at me citing Marvel, it's just best example I could think of - there's plenty of in costume dialogue and it doesn't feel awkward once in my opinion.

      Yes, I did. Although I still interpret the difficulty of having great dialogue as an excuse based on his own opinion, however in the JL movie it would be awkward to NOT have dialogue between team members in costume. But I'm sure Zack Snyder knows this, he might think is awkward at times but he knows he'll have to overcome it, I just hope he really tries to. Also, BvS had another limiting factor for dialogues between Batman and Superman, the script. At times due to flaws in it's writing, the script stood over fragile pillars in such a way that for the story to work the way they planned, dialogue had to be avoided. For example, there's no way any other dialogue other than the "do you bleed" between them could exist without preventing their fight, the conflict stood in so many circumstances that a 2 minute conversation could've solved all of their problems, therefore not allowing much interaction, but I believe we won't have this issue in JL.

      I understand where you come from, and not saying that you are wrong, but that was still a comicbook movie and confrontations like that are a staple in comics. There's always some "misunderstanding" that makes superheroes fight (not only in DC, but in other comics too).
      One relative recent example I remember is Justice League Origins/War, when Superman fights Green Lantern and Batman for a misunderstanding, and Batman says that they have to speak to Superman to stop the fight, but of course there's no opportunity and the fight goes on.
      It just... happens in comic universes ;)

In BvS, both the characters have a predefined perspective over each other—eerily similar to how people these days form opinions about movies they haven't yet seen—that motivate them to act the way they do. In cw the motive only enters the picture at the very end: the security footage in the middle of some nondescript road (short-lived as it may be) which delegitimizes all the previous events of the film as plot-convenience. But of course no one has a problem with that.

    Because the characters in Watchmen have been a team before for years. Case in point, those characters didn't meet for the first time in the movie. If anything Watchmen is like JL>/i> several years after it's inception.

    Adaptation or original, it's his movie. Other directors had vastly different scripts(Watchmen) from the source material and they left voluntarily looking at the difficult task at hand.
    TL;DR at end (BvS)
    That's why it's very important to put things in context, he was specifically talking about BvS. Up until the Sci-Fi/Fantasy aspects of Doomsday, the film was as realistic as any CBM/blockbuster could get. He wanted to maintain that consistency. And in order to achieve that he implemented his ideas.
    Batman's POV: He has always looked at Supes as an alien since his arrival. Batman is paranoid, filled with rage throughout the movie. As it is, he's a man of few words(live action). No way he's gonna have a reasonable conversation with someone he has decided NEEDS TO DIE. He's at his lowest point.
    Superman's POV: Batman's just a masked vigilante who's playing Judge, Jury and Executioner. He doesn't think much of him. The whole movie, he's conflicted about the idea of Superman. The reason he has so few lines of dialogue. He's trying to do the right thing and people don't like him. Batman is "killing" people and no one gives a shit. He's convinced that Batman is in the wrong and is just warning him to stop doing whatever he's doing.
    TL;DR- To sum it up, both Batman and Superman are 'mad' at each other. Plus they don't have a history. "First impression is the last impression." I don't know about you but I don't talk much when I'm mad, specifically with that very person.

      Makes sense and you make a good case for Batman. Superman is a different story, we see Clark writing articles, or at least trying, about Batman's methods. We know he's bothered by it and maybe a little angry. So we know he's on his mind more than you make it out to be. There are even pictures delivered to Clark.
      Again, you make a good point but I still disagree that it's hard to make it work and the way he said it doesn't help either.

I'm not worried about Snyder. He knows what he's doing. He has a good grip on how people react these days. In fact after watching BvS, I can say he has a clear understanding of not only these characters but also our world. Many people didn't like BvS cuz they crave for escapism in these tentpole movies, but Snyder showed us reality, just how hateful people are these days.

  The idea that JL ever was going to be like BvS is dumb and anyone who thought it would be didn't pay attention to the end of BvS.
  I don't know how simple the plot will be for JL, but it's not like BvS has a complex plot. It has interesting/complex ideas within it but at its core it's two guys having a disagreement, who then overcome that, and then join forces to fight a threat. Not too complex.

Any cinephile with a brain and common sense knows Chris Nolan makes good movies and they are original, present your evidence to back that nonsense up. Visionary is the word id use. No one and I mean no except animation directors can match his visual flare. But even ill admit his story telling lacks compared to his visuals. I feel he'd do much better if he was apart of a duo directing team like the Russo's or Wachowskis.

Speaking of witch Wachowskis twins DC movie. That'd be nice.

Think about his actors. Amy Adams looked like a complete moron in BvS. Snyder is such a skilled dude. He and his Wife ... What exactly was Deb's contribution besides telling Zack that hiring the dude who read for Jimmy Olsen was a great idea to play Luthor. Yeah, they decided why bother calling Cranston in for an audition. Snyder will now make his homo erotic Beefcake film about Afghanistan (he was fired ,ya dope) ...

How did Adams look like a moron? And Cranston is a good actor but would undoubtedly been compared to the previous Luthors. Going a different direction was a good idea and worked for this movie.

  How exactly did Eisenberg add to the movie? He referred to being one of the worst parts of the movie. Barely anything in this movie worked and reception says as much.

    He was a good choice for that part, in this movie. If he had been played by someone like Cranston and in the way some people wanted the character to be like, it would have been too much/too similar, especially in the party scene. You have these three guys and the one that seems the least threatening is actually manipulating everything. It worked imo. And just like with the other characters it gives them a good place to start and build the character, probably to something people are more used to.

Well is a genius a genius if the general audience doesn't understand the genius? Maybe that is the problem. Maybe BvS was so complicated people just couldn't get it when they saw it in theatres. A lot of stuff was not spelled out in the movie and left people having to figure it out themselves.

Is that really a problem with Snyder or people in general? There is nothing in that movie that can't be understood, unless you need every little thing explained for you or are looking for something to complain about.

Lois always needing rescue and being in the middle of the battles...that is sheer stupidity on zacks part. One thing for sure Zack has done well IMO is casting. Henry, Ben, Gal, Jason, Ezra, and Ray are all so great, I even really like Jesse as Lex though that seems to be the only divisive casting choice Zack has made. I think Snyder just needs a break from the DC world for a while. Go make a few films outside of the DCEU to reboot your creative juices. Really hope JL turns out solid.

i notice that so many actors have defended Zack Snyder since the BvS fiasco. Even Michael shannon who doesnt even give a shit about the DCEU defended him. I think it would do the public and a lot of the naysayers a lot of good if they could actually meet Zack Snyder in person and see how he works and witness how truly passionate he is about comic book stuff. You know what I respect of Znyder? He at least TRIES to be more akin to the Dark Knight as opposed to being more like the simple fun Disney Marvel flicks. I think its admirable

Zack Snyder has great vision and has proven himself as a great cinematographer. In that sense, he is a genius. I really like the guy, but he HAS to get better with storytelling! I feel like he has like three great moments in his head, but doesn't know what to put around them.

In all fairness, Snyder has a very tasteful distinctive directing style for visuals and premises. I only have a problem with his storytelling abilities, which isn't as fleshed out as it could be.
