DC Films screenwriter says 'Justice League' and 'Aquaman' are going to be more "fun"

Last summer we learned that Will Beall would be writing the script for Aquaman, based on a detailed treatment from director James Wan and DC’s Geoff Johns. Beall also wrote a very early draft for Justice League, which ended up being rewritten by Batman v Superman writer Chris Terrio. So when Collider caught up with Beall for a recent interview, he had a lot say about the tone of the upcoming DC movies.

“It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be really fun," Beall said of Aquaman. "What we’ve come up with and James [Wan] especially — he has a really clear idea of the tone he’s going to have, and I think Aquaman is one that’s going to blow people’s minds, not just visually, but I think the story and the scope of it is really great.”

Beall then commented on the tone of Justice League, noting that it's going to be a lot more "fun" than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

“I think Justice League again is, what you’re going to see — I hope I’m not going to get in trouble for saying this — but it’s much more fun, much poppier, than … I haven’t seen Wonder Woman yet, but Batman vs Superman was a little more somber. But Justice League is a lot more fun. And I think that feels to me like the direction those movies are heading now.”

SS was a mess from the beginning. The difference is that JL actually has a script that is hopefully good. Even BvS had too many cooks, David Goyer wrote it then terrio was brought in. JL at least has terrio making the story from the beginning and not rewriting it. As for tone, JL was always going to be lighter even before bvs come out, terrio stated.

  Not just directing...Zachary Edward Snyder has a hand in the story as well, which will be the surprise package. The script for BvS must have suffered due to WB hiring Chris Terrio at a later stage to rewrite Goyer's script. Goyer's script could have worked as well. Studio intervention is the biggest issue and rewrites and co-writing can lead to a mess. The guy who scripted blockbuster Nolan trilogy deserves attention. Chris Terrio on the other hand has Argo to his credit and is working with Zack. So it's pretty much interesting to see how things will fare now.

  SS is just Ok. It's not as good as the best Marvel movies but not as bad as the worst of them. The disappointment came with the fact that a group of evil people like that could have given for a bolder and less cliché film.

Exactly. And wasn't BvS "fun"? I mean the problem with that film wasn't that it was too dark, it was just a poorly executed film with good elements. In fact, some of my favorite scenes where the darker ones. I think the problem is that it's becoming too premeditated. WB needs to smoke a joint and just back off.

    I assume you don't know what cohesiveness mean, right? Also, just remind yourself that the piece of the movie that was most developed and that had most of the dialogues in the film was Lois's bullet subplot, a subplot that only served to tell the audience and Lois that Lex was bad, something the audience already knew prior to even watching the movie and something that didn't alter the movie itself at all, it received the most attention. This movie's poor editing and directing choices plus the horrible, almost improvised script were it's downfall.

I wish they would do that again. The one from last year was great... and we didn't even realize at the time that Ben Affleck's opening narration was a close match to the BvS opening.

Well thats what the tone for these specific movies SHOULD be. They could have some dark moments, but you have to play with the concept a bit. We are talking about a guy who can talk to fish, and Justice League has to be sort of fun. I like the direction this is going because it feels organic. Hopefully they didn't listen to the reviews of "tone", but for the story specifically, because the script and editing will either make or break these movies. DONT WASTE YOUR TALENT WB!!

  How exactly she did it? Maybe is not the same but I remember a statement that she made... not with the exact words but I remember that she said that people did not like the movie (BvS) because they hated to see their heroes deteriorated, fucked up or something like that... again, using the excuse about the tone and you know, the typical "blame to the people... they don't understand our dark, adult and serious masterpieces".
  Still, regardless of the complains about the tone, it's not the real problem.

    It kinda was when people complaining about. It the very first thing I would see in BvS review. The dark tone was a major issue that people had. And she basically that they were trying avoid having Supes be the boy scout that people usually think of him as.

    Debra and Zack said they have learned after BvS alot of people don't like their heroes to be deconstructed. I think the tone was an issue for people mainly because BvS felt like a storyline 3 or 4 movies in. Despite MoS being the first dceu film BvS was essentially the launch pad for its universe and as much as I love the movie I can appreciate people complaining about tone. I'll try and use an analogy here, it's like meeting a new friend. The first few times hanging out together should be fun and over time you get to know the deeper aspects of them. You generally don't make friends if you are grumpy from the start.

      And regarding origin stories, plenty of people groaned about getting an awesome, poetic, and original re-imagining of Batman's in BvS.
      On one hand they say, "SOLO MOVIES FIRST OR WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THESE CHARACTERS FIGHTING EACH OTHER", so you give them an origin and they're like, "UGH, ORIGINS AGAIN? CAN'T WE MOVE ON?"
      Strange how these same people complained, upon seeing the trailers, about Wonder Woman not getting an origin movie first, but when they saw the movie, they magically did not mind anymore. Everyone loved her anyway.
      Of course, gasp, now we get to go back and see what made this cool character who she is! (As if a WW movie was never going to happen because she cameo'd post-origin in BvS. lol)
      It's almost like learning about somebody's past after you meet them later in life is perfectly okay and actually kind of fascinating!
      Sometimes I think the world is getting stupider. How have we forgotten so many basic things? This is Storytelling 101.

      I agree with how they decided to start us in a mid-point in the lives of the characters. The Trinity has been doing their thing at different points in time, but they are all tired or worn down by something very real in this world. We're most familiar with the developed versions of these characters, but not often do we get to see them as Deborah says: "deconstructed." Most people are familiar with these characters, so full-on origin stories are not necessary. There are other ways of introducing characters, which is what BvS did.
      Another thing I think of is that if they did put out everyone's origin stories first, we would have seen a lot of powerful rival villains already be done and over with. Sure, we will eventually see that happen to a degree, but 3 years in and we have yet to see characters like Reverse-Flash, Black Adam, Sinestro, etc, and I personally find that exciting. Let's have our heroes team up and get to know each other, and then we get to see them take on their own conflicts and rivals until Darkseid pops up. The DCEU may not have started the way some people wanted, but there is still a lot of it that they can look forward to seeing.

      Am ok... In an educated way, an analogy isn't necessary. I don't know if I'm not explaining myself correctly or something but for third or fifth time, regardless of the complaints about the tone, it is not the only or real problem in the DCEU... Suicide Squad proves that. You can love it or not but those movies are a mess... and it goes far beyond the tone.

      Suicide squad was definitely a mess. The BvS ultimate cut had some pacing issues but was most certainly not a mess nor was MoS.

      Of the three films of DCEU, MoS is the one that is a little better made... of course, the pretentiousness is practically palpable in the film ... but still better than the newest ones.

  I don't think people disliked the tone as much as they disliked the execution. Critics don't want JL to be more "fun". They want JL to be better executed. There are moments for fun, moments for somberness, and moments for seriousness. It is how you add those different moments together that decides whether people like the movie. Too much somberness can be a buzzkill for some and push them away unless it is explained well and made to seem substantial to the storyline. The problem with BvS is that they did not really explain why it was necessary for the movie to be so somber. They left the general audience hanging.
  I personally liked BvS and it's tone (even though I was shocked when I originally saw the movie and wasn't sure what to think because it wasn't what I expected). I am honestly hoping JL doesn't end up all goofy with rock n roll songs instead of Junkie XL compositions.

      Even though people noted the tone as being one of the reasons they didn't like the movie, I am pretty sure that is just a vague idea of why they didn't like it. Like I was saying, I think it is more of an issue of execution. People like dark movies, but they don't like unnecessarily dark movies just for the sake of being dark. They like to at least know there is an understandable reason. For most people, they probably didn't realize why having superman die was necessary. They probably just thought the director was trying to make them feel like crap. Lol.

    I can't speak for anyone officially, but I have a feeling people would have liked the movie more if it ended on a high note instead of a low one. (I guess someone could argue it ended on a high note but really it ended on a nuetral note if anything). A good number of people like to see movies to get a sense of fulfillment. When movies end on a low note it tends to make some movie goers dislike the movie. I understand that they plan on going somewhere with it in Justice League, but I feel like they could have somehow at least ended the movie with a high note. Could have left people leaving excited instead of sad. At least in a super hero film.
    Personally, I don't like cliffhangers in movies much. I don't like waiting almost 2 years to get the rest of the story. I like when movies have a self-contained plot and then the sequel is a different story. I don't mind cliffhangers on TV shows because then at least you only have to wait a week to half a year. Don't get me wrong though. I liked BvS and I watch it regularly, but I do feel they could have done some things differently. I definitely felt it could have been "better".

    Gonna be honest, I enjoy the pep talks. I think maybe in large part because Tom Cavanagh is so amazing. haha
    Now, I also feel like they've run their course. Haven't started Season 3 yet, but if we keep getting the same pep talks over and over, I'll probably groan too just from overuse.
    The thing is, it's foremost a character drama show, so there always has to be an emotional conflict for Barry to resolve and for everybody to come in and group hug it out eventually, yet, to keep things rolling, he can never remain fully confident or happy for too long after those hugs.
    If you embrace (hug pun) that format, I find things like the pep talks easier to watch.

I believe he will. In the comic-con footage, Barry was just about to explain everything right before they cut it. When he says, "that sounds like a gross over-simplification" and takes a breath to continue!
I have a feeling the Speed Force doesn't exist as is in the DC Films. It's more of a power to slow down time rather than actually go fast, Relativity still playing a major role. I think so because it's Zack who's dealing with the character but we'll find out soon enough.

WB really needs a better management. Nearly all of their big-budgeted 2016 releases are messy, which I suspect was caused by the execs just couldn't agree on how the movie should be made, cut, and presented. Their latest should've-been-good-but-goshdarnit movie is Ben Affleck's Live by Night. Poor Ben is having a rough time.

Seriously, I'm very, very disappointed. Can't they decide the movie's runtime long before production? Can't they agree with the director's vision before the camera starts rolling? Can't they stop picking editors who don't give a sh*t?

At this rate, without some sort of reorganization, any upcoming DC film, no matter how fun they planned it to be, would just fall to the same pit as their predecessors.

  Fantastic Beast Is in my Top 3 of favorite Blockbusters of 2016 that movie was excellent. It sad that it was overlooked by fanboys (who tend of have some bias against HP movies) because Doctor Strange opened bigger but at the end of the day it did not only caught up but crushed Doctor Strange. So I guess they Winning.
  Also WB Brothers is the second studio of 2016 behind Disney with a whooping $5.5 billion in gross that not the kind of number you change management over.

      I'm not making the argument, just saying they exist - and there are far more than 2 or 3 of them.
      My observational experience is that Doctor Strange has less of a cult anti-following than HP by quite a lot. It's simply not as big of a franchise for people to be snobs about. I'm sure there are haters, but nowhere close to the same amount.
      I would more suspect franchise burn-out and weak advertising in Fantastic Beasts' case. There was also a healthy dose of big name box office competition this year.

Fanboys trashed Jurassic world as if it was some aberation of a movie just because it destroyed Age of ultron and the first avenger on the box office. Same thing with the fast and furious movies, nobody cared about those until they start making more money than the Avengers now all of sudden it's a dumb franchise no better than transformer.
      Same thing happened with Fantastic Beasts. fanboys were like yeah the movie has no hype or will underperform then once it openned fanboys and blogs glauted about how Doctor Strange had a bigger opening. Now weeks later Strange stalled at 650M while FB managed to. Reach $800M even by being sandwichted between Strange and Moana,yet nobody talks about it.

I suppose I have been watching totally different movies, BVS was a masterpiece n my opinion, a very deep movie. The messages and performances that were given in that movie, you don't see a lot these day. WB needs to give Snyder a pink slip. He has only done 2 good comic movies- Watchmen and 300 (only because they already had a script). Sucker Punch is TERRIBLE. Uwe Boll levels of terrible. And this is obviously a polarizing opinion, but BvS was terrible other than Batfleck and Gadot. The worst movie I saw in theaters this year other than maybe Assassin's Creed.

Anyway I'm just glad we getting 2 brand new movie from the DCEU this year. Can you remember in 2013 before Man of Steel It was confirmed that the TDK trilogy would never expand and at that point a cinematic universe was just hopeful wishes fast forward to now and we are all the way deep for better or worse. We as DC fans have to accept that the media will never embrace the DC movies like they do with Marvel, In their eyes Marvel will always be better just because they start it.the sooner we accept that the sooner we will stop begging for acceptance and generating flame bait articles.

    Man of Steel is pretty dark for a Superman movie, as was BvS. It was during production of SS that they tried to course correct by overhauling the tone of the movie once they realized the mistake they made with the first 2 films, so of course WW is not gonna be dark. But that's because of the backlash; WB is very reactive. For years they made campy movies until the Dark Knight series became successful, then they decided to apply the same tone to their DC movies going forward.

I love the sitcom sitcom style 80s JLI. My favorite take on the property. Snyder could thus release a full blow parody for all i care, but he won´t. Even his 1 animated kids film ended up being a bit grim-dark. So will JLA, just with a "metal" action focus. Fine with me. Seeing them work as a team and learn from the emotional bottom that was BvS will be what i expected to get next in march 2016 anyway.

"The early stages of production saw Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck step up their involvement to do rewrites on the screenplay, and the addition of a desire to ensure the film achieved a more fun, uplifting tone (which, as I've reported repeatedly, was always the plan and was confirmed in interviews I published as long ago as the lead-in to Batman v Superman's release). After the early weeks of getting all the ducks in a row and making the desired changes to the project, Justice League's production was on schedule and on point."

I am all for a lighter tone as long as they don't push "fun" too far. I am a little worried that they are going to try to replicate Marvel in that sense, especially with humor. Marvel has ruined some potentially awesome moments by adding humor at the wrong time to make their movies more fun and I really hope that DC doesn't do that.

Yeah especially on Doctor Strange. I was really hoping they would go for a serious tone.. but nope. F**ked the movie with bad jokes, really bad jokessssszzzzzz.......

Can we stop suggesting that Marvel invented humor in 2008? Fucking Blade had jokes and the ice skating uphill bit is the film´s highlight. "Our" Goyer wrote that one. Nolan couldn´t go a few minutes without levity either and who can forget Jack chewing every possible scene in 1989.

  Haha I am not saying that they did. I actually really, really liked all of the movies leading up to the Avengers. But since the first Avengers, they've had a lot of opportunities to try have a more serious tone and they have opted to go for a light-hearted, humorous tone instead. And it almost feels like superhero movies have to fit that mold in order to be successful. I want DC to be different and I think that having a more serious tone is a cool way to do that. Not saying that there can't be anything funny in the movie, but that it doesn't become overpowering.

    Cap 3 had badly inserted humor but the rest worked with me fine. The weaker films had other shortcoming that stood out to me. Villains are high on that list. Like the DCEU ones or not but all got shit done.

Yo, the RT score for BvS again dropped by 1 point, after being lifted by 1 a few days ago. A beautiful lie.
It still keeps being reviewed though. Which is rare for modern blockbuster. The conversation goes on.

I looked the DCEU scores up to see if they "beat" the average for Twilight. We don´t. That´s would be a start, a "realistic" goal. Overtaking their critical RT status in 2017. Our franchises ended up being TW´s "replacement" regarding it´s standing on the web and the box-office average lines up too.
I don´t remember that fan base being miserable at any point. Put a smile on that face!

Remember, there's no bias against DC. Nope. None at all. I remember when Doctor Strange was sitting at 90% for a week, one day it went to 89% and not an hour later, they got it back to 90%. They won't let their precious Marvel to get any lower than that and they won't let DC get a higher rating.
Oh, and I just love how everyone now is saying that the tone was not the problem when they were crying about it for over a year!

  P.S: You're right, the general audience criticized mostly the tone because they though the film was boring as hell, but the people many people criticized the real problems, like the numerous plot holes, lack of substantial dialogue and actual scenes, horrible cohesiveness and pacing...

    That video was excellent. And right on the money- Snyder movies lack any sense of cohesion or incentive to give a damn about the characters and what's happening. Why would we care about the "death" of Superman when we know JL is coming? Why would we care about Luthor when there's no back-story? Or when the Senator is killed in the explosion? We aren't invested in the characters in the DCEU unless we've been reading the comics, which bodes poorly for your average movie-goer.

      Oh, why not? So turning a movie into a pot of small scenes filled with one liners that support no actual dialogue (When the planet was founded it stood for something, Perry!) acting as fillers until the next montage or action sequence comes was great, wasn't it?

      Exactly, Don't forget killing Jimmy Olsen for pure shock value without even bothering to introduce the character and give us a reason to care about his death. Snyder just thought it was amusing to randomly kill off one of DC's most well known non superhero characters. His death adds nothing to the movie other than it happened. Much like Batman's vision of the future added nothing to the movie but hey it kind of looked 'cool' so lets throw it in there. A random car chase scene also needed to be thrown into the film despite not being needed as Batman was tracking the truck. Doomsday being included in this cluster fuck of a movie was again another plot point that no one bothered to think through. Snyder thought it would look 'cool' so lets throw in Doomsday and ruin the entire movie by pointlessly killing off Superman. This idea that Superman's death will inspire Batman and Wonder Woman is just too silly when considering neither of them even know Superman personally. In fact, Wonder Woman never even speaks to Superman once prior to his death but now were supposed to believe that he inspired her to join the Justice League through his death? Its like fan fic written by a 12 year old.

      Okay, "Dr." Yes, I use words without any knowledge of meaning, nor am I capable of looking up definitions of these words. Those "Three story threads" were threadbare at best. BvS managed the impressive task of having a lot going on but also being boring. And maybe myself (and others) LIKE story and want more than 30 seconds to establish motive. Now can you provide any substantial points to this, or will you simply return to believing my opinion is wrong because it doesn't match yours?

    A trait that leads to consequences like weak character and plot development, nonexistent motivations and horrible pacing? I'm sorry, but to me these "collateral effects" are more than enough to classify BvS's style as flawed. You may think this style is not a flaw, that this is not the cause of all the bad things about the movie, but you can't deny the motivations are nonexistent, the pacing is as bad as it gets and the characters were not relatable to the general audience, and I think that big part of these problems rely on the fundamental flaw cited in the video. Although this is not the only reason why the movie didn't succeed, it also had a very bad script.

tone was never the problem with these movies. DC is trying to fix what isn't broken instead of looking at simple film mistakes and what they can do to improve story, which has been the biggest mistep in their movies.

I like Marvel films, but if they're trying to be like Marvel, we don't need it. We HAVE Marvel already.
I have no issue with the tone of any of the movies so far, I like it dark.

      But we don't know find out its Olsen until the end credits, meaning it could have literally been anyone else (King Faraday for example who would have made sense) and the plot would have been exactly the same, all this did was remove a major supporting character from the DCU who could have been utilised later on for a reason justified as essentially a "fun" shout out.

      Jimmy Olsen introduces himself to Lois in the Ultimate Cut, which sound like you haven't watched just yet. Most fans of the film refer to the UC as the intended version of the film. And quite frankly, the creative team at DC were correct in having a nice cameo of that side character - but let's be real, there is indeed a 'pantheon' of characters in the universe that deserve more screen time. What's wrong with killing known supporting characters? It adds weight to the scenes for the comic fans.

Suicide Squad was more fun but it as still a mess, DC biggest problem with its films has been its story structure, editing, and pacing, the tone itself wouldn't have caused such a backlash if they fixed those.

I'm fine with a fun tone, as long as it doesn't undermine the conflict. If a hero is making wisecracks during a battle, for example, it severely undermines the threat the hero faces.

I ask myself if they couldn't have stopped for a minute and though of what they were going to do, plan everything out just like Marvel did. It doesn't matter if it took 5 years, we could wait and so should them! Because if you stop to think about it, the DCEU started with a conversation between Zack and co. that Batman would be a really cool addition, then they announced it to the world before they even had a full story, much less a script! The movie had to be delayed a year, they had to switch screenwriters and the script wasn't ready until halfway through filming!!! That's how our cinematic universe was kicked off, obviously it turned out a mess! So did Suicide Squad due to other kinds of drama, and now possibly - since we're speculating - the only way to recover for these WB people is by going through the Marvel route when they could've gone they're own route if they weren't so damn irresponsible and impatience and, of course, had better directors/screenwriters/producers to begin with.

  I agree that they didn't have a plan from the beginning and I believe MoS was made at that time just so WB wouldn't lose the rights to Superman,but I'm not 100% sure that's accurate.
  What I don't agree is that it ended up a mess,at least not with the first two movies they released.You see,MoS and BvS follow a vision that doesn't cop out at all,as opposed to SS.
  The problem,for me at least,is that they're trying to make all of them more fun and light now instead of continuing with the darker vision they started out with,which would have been what set them apart from Marvel.Diversity is the selling point here,not having more of the same in an oversaturated market of superhero movies that follow the same beats.
  They got cold feet because of the backlash of their first two movies,but if they would have kept going on,people would have learned to appreciate them more in the long run.

    Yes, you're right, I can't say anything about this yet. But I still think though that there could've been better planning on their part before kickstarting the DCEU.
