'Jurassic World 2' director J.A. Bayona wants to make a Superman movie

2015's Jurassic World caught a lot of people by surprise when it made over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. J.A. Bayona has been hired to direct the sequel, and during a recent Reddit Q&A he revealed another big movie that he'd like to direct.

When asked what his dream movie would be to work on, the director said "Superman":

"The first movie I saw in my life was Superman. I was three years old. The first memory I had was Christopher Reeve flying in the suit. Directing a Superman film would be great. I always wanted to be Superman. That's the film that made me want to become a director."

A solo Superman movie for Henry Cavill is confirmed to be in the works, and if Bayona's Jurassic World sequel is as successful as its predecessor, I don't think he'll have any problem landing his dream directing job.

        Do you really think I "enjoy" seeing my childhood heroes fail on film? Lol... I'm laughing at how utterly bad WB is handling the DCCU. A BATMAN V SUPERMAN movie was nominated for tons of Razzies, yet fanboys still delude themselves into believing it was a flawless masterpiece the likes of which only avid intellectuals could ever hope to comprehend. THAT is hilarious....ly stupid.

        Because he was the one of the few directors who's done comic book films before. He wasn't their first choice, but they felt that he was their best option. Goyer and WB were the ones who came up with the concept of MoS. Snyder was just the one who was told to make it happen.

        A lot of films have long original cuts. This isn't nothing new. The LOTR films are longer than BvS so I don't know why you keep complaining about this. And it being rated-R is just further proof on how bad the MPAA is since the majority agreed that the UE didn't really deserve an R rating when compared to other R-rated films.
        And though the story wasn't finished when Snyder was brought, the concept remained the same. He didn't suggest that Superman should be presented in a realistic setting. And he wasn't the one who said that BvS should be re-edited just so that the film could get extra showings.

        Not really since WB has done Batman films where Batman has killed, so there's no reason for them to think otherwise. I don't see how Superman was oppressive towards anyone in the film, unless you're talking about his first interaction with Batman in which Superman could've easily had took Batman to jail instead of just leaving him with a warning.
        The studio tried that with Superman Returns. It followed after Superman 2 and ignored 3 and 4., but the studio didn't like the end result. Again, they and Goyer thought it would be best to just re-introduce him into the world as if he was a whole new superhero.

        You can't believe any of that 100%, but keep in mind that the cutting most likely took place not because they didn't like parts of it, but to reduce the run time, so that the theaters would be able to have more screenings scheduled, hence, make more money.
        What IS a clear giveaway is review embargo all the way till the day movie is out. Watch out for those -- if they do the same for WW, you know it's shit.

  I really believe Chris Terrio basically had to rewrite the dialogues while keeping the story intact. Otherwise, I can't really explain how underwhelming the story is.

    The fact that Man of Steel story is more focused and the allegory is clearer than BvS is very intriguing.
    When Jor-El starts talking about "What if a child dreamed of becoming something other than what society had intended? What if a child aspired to something greater? You were the embodiment of that belief, Kal.", to me thats the core of Man of Steel, or at least the idea...but it wasn't apparent through the movie mainly in my opinion because of Zacks focus on action.
    But, like on BvS, profound thoughts are not explored and do not flesh the characters. I thought Terrio would have fixed that (I guess because I've read that he wrote good tension scenes, and also for his Oscar), but the end result made me think that he was in this situation in which there was no way he could change the story, but made the dialogue ""clever"".

      It's funny, but I noticed that the way Zack showed Clark in his beginnings was always through physical conflict, incomprehension and aggression. This thing really doesn't match Jor-El's (or the writer's original vision).

    I won't even go into his many weaknesses such as horrible storytelling skills and lack of heart, making his big and gorgeous characters completely unrelatable. All stories he told were really dark, which is not a bad thing, but it doesn't appeal to wider audiences and completely goes against the light and hopeful mage Superman has. So if you think his style fits Superman, I see no reason Bayona's wouldn't.

    What exactly is Superman's definitive form? People have said this since MOS came out, so I got some Superman comics for Christmas and I still don't get what people are saying. In each of the stories I've read, there has been something that Superman has done or said that reminds me of the character in the movies. From what I've seen the people that seem to have the most problems with MOS and BvS are the ones that compare this Superman to the one in the Donner movies.

      You say the comics, the media this character started in, isn't very good, so then where exactly do you draw the conclusion that what we've seen in the last two movies is not how the character should be?
      One of the things I read was a collection, the greatest Superman stories or something like that, I didn't go looking for the Superman deep cuts.
      And how has this Superman not been heroic? He saved the Earth, defeated the bad guys, and in BvS gave his life to do so. Just because the character has dealt with an internal struggle of being part of two worlds as well as how he fits into this world with his unique gifts, his actions are less heroic?

I can see where your sentiments coming from, but coming from a life-long Superman fan, I thought 'Man of Steel' was just okay and that the Superman parts of 'Batman v Superman' were misfires. Having just watched 'A Monster Calls', JA Bayona feels like the perfect guy for Supes. He really perfectly blends that deep, resonating conflict with that sense of lightheartedness and hope. And I think that perfectly describes Superman.

      It really isn't. Having some parallels and metaphors is fine, but these movies beat the audience over the head with them. Everywhere you look you see them, and it's not subtle, nor intelligent, it just makes him more unrelatable and makes for a pretty fucking pretentious movie, even if it's not intended.

I feel the exact same way. If it wasn't for Snyder, I wouldn't care about Superman at all. Nobody would put as much effort into MoS 2 than Zack Snyder. The real task is to channel that effort into right places...

I think it is time for a fresh set of eyes on Superman. I will always respect Snyder for Man of Steel but I feel Superman is on his way to be becoming the symbol of hope he was always destined to be and I do not want Snyder to tell that story in his usual deconstructionist way.

        What are you talking about? I'm talking about mainstream Superman. All Star Superman is what I would call my "definitive" version of the character, and most modern iterations are the same (except for the dreadful New 52 take, which was disliked by most for a very obvious reason). All Star isn't from the 80s, it's relatively recent. The idea that the only version of Superman being a hopeful hero who inspires hope, comes from the 80s or Reeve's films, is simply wrong.

        Character development also shouldn't have to need multiple movies, especially when there is barely any character development present in a stand alone film.
        No, I don't want a Superman who already starts off as the most confident and likable hero, who smiles and flies in space and saves kittens. I was excited for a more realistic take... but that doesn't justify taking away EVERYTHING he stood for.
        Look at how Iron Man is changing. He started as a rich likable prick, got a reality check, but still maintained his charm in the FIRST movie ALONE. Now, several movies later, he's a completely changed character. THAT is how you handle natural progression of character.

        Yeah, but there's a difference between good and bad execution. Bale's Batman in TDKR was different than his Begins counterpart. That's how you progress a character. It's fine to have character development throughout multiple movies, but that doesn't justify the HORRIBLE execution.
        Also, Cavill's Superman (especially in BvS) was one of the most wooden and emotionless protagonists I've ever seen in a Hollywood blockbuster.

        Irrelevant. Use any other well reviewed franchise. I only used TDKR because the events in that film were more extreme, and because there was an 8 year gap.
        Look at Iron Man in Avengers 2 and Civil War. ONE movie difference, yet still a believable and logical progression of his character.

        People were complaining that Superman was acting too emo and didn't smile a lot, even though there are plenty of video clips that prove otherwise. The complaints weren't about a lack of character development, it was that he wasn't acting like how he's "supposed" to be like in the comics.

        Smiling is not the same as having proper character development. I also literally said a "smiling Superman" wouldn't be enough. I'm also mainly talking about BvS, which was stated to show an "evolved" Superman. One that is more comfortable and confident. That would've redeemed MoS for me. But what we got was anything but.

        Well yeah. The film, like us, knew that he will inspire people, but it wasn't his time yet.
        I felt that BvS did fine. If you put anyone else in Superman's shoes, they would've broke down on their first day. Folks have to realize that being a hero isn't as easy as the films and comics make it out to be. I feel that BvS showed it well. I love Cavll's Superman because despite all of the hate he got and no matter how heavy the burden became, he never once blamed anyone but himself.

        But he is still a man with emotions. Him putting the world on his shoulders is a lot to ask.
        But he did. He could've gave up. But he learned that he can bear the consequences of his actions as long as Lois is there to tell him that everything's okay and that he did his best.
        Not really really, because he could've easily had blamed other people. Him not doing shows how selfless he is. He could easily had did an Anakin Skywalker and just rant about how no one understands him. But he doesn't. He puts the people's needs before his own, and thinks that maybe Earth would be better if he hangs up the cape. This is what most superheroes go through.

In MoS, he was a reclusive man who was finding his place in the world, and when he does find others like him, he chooses to Earth over his own people.         Most people didn't like the New 52. It was a failed experiment, as was Snyder's take. BvS was heavily criticized by critics and fans alike for disrespecting everything the characters originally stood for. Time for you people to wake up and to realize this just isn't working.

        Because it's Batman vs freaking Superman, not because it was a good movie. People were going to watch a Batman vs Superman film regardless. If it had been any good, it would've grossed more than a billion without breaking a sweat. The movie didn't even double its opening weekend (both nationally and internationally). These types of numbers are categorically awful and this happens only to the worst of movies. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. There are very few movies that are so bad they fail to double their initial weekend gross (mostly terrible horror movies actually). BvS is one of those films. It's pathetic.

        Not doubling your opening weekend is proof that your movie sucks. I knew the movie sucked major balls, but I still went and go see it because it's Batman versus Superman. That's it. The movie has a 27% rating friend. The overwhelming majority didn't like it. END OF STORY. It's just fucking pathetic how fanboys keep denying it and live in their fantasy world.
        No, you've got it backwards. It's fine if YOU liked, but that doesn't mean "most other people" did as well.
        Also, the movie DID seriously underperform. Judging by its global opening weekend (which was higher than Age of Ultron ffs), it could have grossed around 1.5 billion if word of mouth had been good. The fact that it didn't proves my point. It barely made half. The movie also received the same cinema score as Green Lantern. Let that sink in for a moment. You have absolutely NOTHING to prove "most" people liked it.
        So if 27% liked it, and tens of millions have seen the film, then still if only a fraction of that 27% buys the bluray, it's still going to sell millions.

        In the movie sure, it was impactful. But to the audience? Even Groot's fake death - a character mostly unknown by the general audience - was more impactful to the audience, that's what bothers me the most. Snyder CLEARLY wanted to adapt TDKR, but also wanted to fit in Death of Superman and even Birthright! All that added to a tad of an original story by himself resulted in what we got: a poorly executed mess.
        P.S: the horrendous scene that came right after it, with the Daily Planet reporting on the ONLY casualty of the night besides Superman being the reporter Clark Kent showing his picture and all, that was ridiculous! It seemed like a joke to me, couldn't interpret it any other way.

        I completely agree with what you said and it makes total sense! I definitely miss horror movies like Jaws or the first Alien which kept your eyes locked on the screen at all times! While what you typed is reasonable by itself, it doesn't make any sense as an analogy - which is what you tried to do. Why is that DC movies are the fear of the unknown and the Marvel movies the jumpscares? In my opinion both of them would qualify as jumpscares, actually, Marvel would be the cheap jumpscare and DC the jumpscare that has no tension at all and in the end never actually happens, failing to engage you in any real emotion. And just to prove you that I won't even go into SS! In BvS, the most developed and worked on plot is the Lois Lane/bullet subplot, which revolves around the mystery of a bullet she found in her notebook. But in the end, this subplot that accounts for the majority of the real dialogue in the movie serves no real purpose other than prove that Lex is a bad guy, something the audience already knew way earlier and something that doesn't serve any purpose in the movie as well, since by the time she unravels her mystery capable of putting the audience to sleep, it simply doesn't matter anymore and the strings have already been pulled by Lex. BvS had very few things capable of keeping the attention of the general audience, resulting in it's poor reception and rewatchability. To me this sounds more like a example of a jumpscare where the viewer is told where and when the "monster" will attack ahead of time, causing nothing but yawns in the audience, hence it's cute nickname "Yawn of Justice"! There you go, I just made an analogy but I gave an example why I believe so, how do you respond to this? You probably won't.

        The fact that people cared more about Groot's fake and temporary death than Superman's "ultimate sacrifice" just proves how poorly BvS was executed.
        The Death of Superman was something I had been looking forward to seeing on the big screen for YEARS. And it failed... hard.

It's a very forgettable Superman because the charisma and personality do not exist in the slightest. No matter how different he comes next time around, the execution in his first two movies was pretty fucking mediocre, and movies should be judged as standalones, always. I personally think "The Impossible" was highly overrated. But I wouldn't say it's a bad film. "Monster Calls" has been getting great reviews, and he does know how to present the heart of a story (something Snyder just isn't capable of) which is what Superman needs. So yes, give this man a shot!

        I think Affleck really did believe in the movie. Remember the Sadfleck? He was clearly devastated. You don't show such deep sorrow, with all your restraint, when you don't really care. I think his problem was that he did not study the characters and the world they were building. He relied on Snyder thinking he knew what he was doing. But anyone who knows anything about Luthor could tell otherwise. And now? Does he care now? I see people ask him about the Batman movie all the time, and he responds vaguely, but have yet to hear him mention JL in any of his interviews. Back then he was promoting the shit out of BvS. Or is he just too scared to say anything about JL?

        Yeah, I've argued this before, but most people don't agree here, but it seems Affleck doesn't seem to care anywhere near as much about JL (plus further movies), as he did about BvS.
        I remember he actually took the role of Batman - despite the fact that he vowed never to do another CBM after Daredevil - because he really believed in the project and the creative team. Flash forward to now, and he says he only took the role to make his son happy. As if he's searching for excuses to justify the fact that he's the freaking Batman. I don't think his son had anything to do with it when his son was like barely 1 year old when he was cast, not to mention he said on the Jimmy Fallon show his kids weren't into it, and they didn't care.
        This change of opinion indicates to me, he doesn't have the same drive, nor interest. And quite frankly, it wouldn't surprise me he already regrets his decision. Clearly he hasn't worked out that much for JL (which I think is very lazy) and barely mentions the movie. As if he's just part of a product, rather than a good film. Honestly, to me, the DCCU has already failed.

I would really like to see another take from Snyder, just to see how the story he meant goes along. HOWEVER, we know from some time ago that his contract for the DCEU was up to three movies only (a trilogy of sorts they were calling it), so maybe he finishes directing after JL, or maybe he goes on with JL 2.
Anyway, Bayona wouldn't be a bad choice to take the gig after Snyder, if he is to retire.

        I actually enjoyed Mos, it's the direction they went in BvS that I had problems with. Yeah I know that the world appreciates Superman at the end of BvS pretty obvious by the funeral, the only reason I said I'd hate to see the world hate Superman in another movie is because of that future/dream sequence of an evil Superman that Zack decided to tease in BvS. That being said I have a question for you.
        Where do they go from here story wise? Clark Kent is dead, no more Daily Planet, they've done the death of Superman, what now?

  A young-ish (or an old) Superman doubting himslef is a cornerstone of his characterization.
  Him being able grow out of it is what makes him "Super", not the powers. The 1978 Superman did the same, so did the TAS one. Even Smallville got that bit right. You would have a cardboard cutout otherwise.
  Cavil-man literally sacrificed himself for humanity´s sins. If that ain´t heroism that i don´t know what is and we barely saw Snyder´s Batman, as most of what was on screen was a villainous deconstruction.

His The Orphanage and The Impossible are good. So sure, why not and i am off to watch his A Monster Calls, as i somehow skipped it. He would also need to make MoS3 by his busy schedule.
Snyder should still be kept as a producer + story consultant. He made the best Superman solo film yet, no small feat.

I'd FIRE Zack Snyder because to most people, this ain't his baby. He only did an OK job with MoS, but with BvS he displayed a lack of understanding of the Superman character. Superman is supposed to be a light-hearted and hopeful individual. The "Superman" I saw in BvS was a dull and depressed individual who made me want to lose the will to live. He did a good job with Batman in BvS, though (minus the murder). Snyder already admitted that he's not a fan of normal superhero movies. I don't why WB would trust Superman with a guy who usually directs violent, r-rated movies and hasn't gotten a movie rating that's higher than 75% on RT. Superman just isn't his specialty

Why would his Jurassic World sequel need to be as successful as his predecessor to get the job. Snyder got 3 turns at making these movies and nothing he's ever done has been as successful as Jurassic World. (Remains to be seen how JL will do, of course) But WB keeps giving him work.
