'Suicide Squad' is in the running for an Oscar nomination

on 'Suicide Squad' is in the running for an Oscar nomination

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the seven finalists for this year's makeup and hairstyling Oscar, and Suicide Squad made the cut!

Here's its competition:

  • Suicide Squad
  • Deadpool
  • The Dressmaker
  • Florence Foster Jenkins
  • Hail, Caesar!
  • A Man Called Ove
  • Star Trek Beyond

Variety reports that the Academy will watch 10-minute clips from each movie on January 7th, and then nominate three of the seven movies for finale Oscar consideration.

It may not be Best Picture, but it's still an Oscar! Between The Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, and El Diablo, I think Suicide Squad is definitely worthy of the hair and makeup nomination. Stay tuned for updates.

        that's actually hilarious. I feel bad for the actor. Such hard work to get into all that shit, just to have your character mean shit to the story (except basically the bomb part), do nothing, have almost no lines, and be there just to be there. Poor fellow.

      The makeup was objectively well done. So much craft went into it. Killer Croc didn´t even look human! The Eyes of the Adversary were even mostly practical. Who noticed that?

        Ahem, I was just taking a innocent jab at it, but if you go into that direction, are you seriously saying this? Because then you have to go against The Joker image in general. He is a comic character and that is (arguably because with the Joker you never know for sure) how he got his looks. Of course in reality he would've died and never got those colors, but on saying this you are taking a chunk out of Joker's mythos.

            That's wrong, not all films are made for monetary purposes, my friend. Some are made just to win over audiences. As I said, after watching this mediocrity, I won't be surprised if audiences reject SS2 and Sirens and both of them flop. As for the nomination, CBMs never win. Try again.

    For me, it would have made more sense if they got nominated for best song for Heathens, but hey an Oscar nomination is still good and that department made a good job with the characters!

      Deadpool was stupid and childish and not funny at all, SS until the ORIGINAL, COMPLETE cut of the movie is not released, it will be a bad, incoherent movie

        The ORIGINAL, COMPLETE cut was what we got. Ayer has said this, so you can stop with the excuses and all that hope. Ayer was out of his league, and not only did he completely screw up in the writing, he was completely thrown around during production and post. Not a director worth having for these movies.

    Ayer pushed for the tats, I've seen in several interviews where he was discussing what inspired this version of The Joker about LA gangs and so on. From an interview I saw Leto suggested, hinted that he was the one that suggested the no eye brows. As for the grill I'm assuming that was Ayer because of him telling everyone the backstory for it.
    The costume was the costume department + Ayer and so on it's on the behind the scenes stuff on the Blu Ray.

      The lack of eyebrows is from the books + TAS. Which deluded troll can complain about this 1 to 1 aspect? The broken teeth are from the cannon too, just not the Jaws mouth piece. His teeth are slightly inconstant though the film but this may have to do with the non-linearity. Half the suits have comic counterparts too and the dress-up aspect is a core part of the character. The team involved is pretty close to canon so far, all in all. I can´t complain.

        I'm not complaining either, I was just added what I heard to his comment. I don't mind Leto's Joker. I think the script was awful and the editing woeful so I think all of the actors got dealt a pretty raw hand. I think Robbie and Smith shined because they had the most well written archs in the movie. Leto's Joker only existed in this movie to add depth to Harley's story.

            I have read at least 5000 issues published by DC comics. Maybe even up to 10000.
            I call bullshit on all of that. The DCEU is going out of it´s way, for the first time in a DC film adaptation (outside of Watchmen), to adapt the books.
            Verbum quotes, direct panel to screen adaptations and (mostly) 1 to 1 character motivations are featured in all 3 film. BvS and SS even have a separate credit section for the adapted creators!

            PS: I liked both Fox comic film and Dr. Strage. Cap 3 was... ok.

            Why does it matter if they are? Your like or dislike for a movie or movies doesn't invalidate the opinions of others. Express yourself, sure, fine, in fact please do, but belittling others for their genuinely held opinions simply lowers and shames yourself.
            ... in my opinion.
            Have a discussion about the pros and cons of each movie, without resorting to childish name calling, or other argumentative fallacies and i bet that ultimately nothing will change and itll just come down to one person preferring one more than the other.
            But this is the internet, so when did calmness or rationality ever accomplish anything?

        The Critics' Choice Awards win (Squad won too!) should be acknowledged though. DP is pretty good, even if the story makes no sense on 2nd viewing. 8,5/10

      I hate Deadpool as a character but I'm a huge fan of Reynolds acting and he seems like a genuinely good guy so I'm kind of hoping he takes out every award he's nominated for.

    Killer Crocs makeup was well done... for all three minutes he was in the movie with even less lines. Im sorry but in good conscience, for how poorly done it was this movie deserves zero Oscars. The makeup crew was great but being part of a terrible effort otherwise will do that to you

    A bigger contender for the Razzies than anything close to such a prestigious award

        It was a good effort on what was ultimately a bad product. Was it good enough on its own to be worth an Oscar? No, take a serious look at "damaged" on letos forehead and try to tell me that with a straight face. Was it worth an Oscar knowing its for Suicide Squad? Come on.

      No charcterization on anyone, no real meaningful interaction within the squad until the bar scene which was the end of the movie, embarassing villain, plot made up by a preschooler, boring dialouge, bland dialouge, shitty directing, and a vomit-in-your-mouth bastardization of the Joker and Harley relationship.

    If it really gets nominated for an Oscar, or just imagine, even wins it, for whichever category - it's a slap in the face. And it will sting a lot.
    I mean, don't get me wrong, movie deserves to be obliterated from existence, but just imagine WB's execs playing card like: "See, we believed in this movie from the start, and this Oscar nomination just proves that we are on the right track with....".
    That's it. I'm done with CBM genre till WW.

      Indepedently of the quality of the movie, if one of its part related to any Academy category is astounding, it should be elligible with no prejudice.

      We have seen it with lots of okay to bad movies. Even if you feel Suicide Squad falls into this category, why shouldn't it be any different?

    SS was visually incredible - even if you dont like the style, even if you dont like the movie, you cant deny that it was visually well done - from KC to Harley, El Diablo to Joker, it was well done.

    I havent seen all of them, but my pick would probably be Star Trek > SS > Deadpool.

          You said this movie is "visually well done". You never specified whether you meant the makeup, VE, art design or hair. So therefore just using a blanket term of this movie is "visually well done" anything "visually" shown in this movie is up for grabs. I disagreed with you saying this movie was "visually well done" because I remember a horrible "visual" effect by the name of Incubus. He is not the only one by any means but probably the worst. So in my opinion SS was not "visually well done" because the "visual effects" in many parts of the movie are terrible. I tried to make it easy for you to understand you obviously get confused.

Youve made a coherent argument in your second comment. And i'd agree with it - but we'll have to agree to disagree. I thought it was well done. I disagree with your premise. there were things that were obviously CG, but how is that different from most movies these days.

            You're right though, i didnt specify what i meant, it was implied by the context, but i should have been more specific.

    Tbh I reallllllly hope it loses all the awards and the public favor, because SS was god awful, and all I want are good movies. This movie deserves so much more hate, because we deserve better than this. Don't try and defend a sub-par product, fight for the best product. Show WB that it needs to wise up, and have the SS do something new and different, instead of the same old blue light in the sky marvel transformers bs. BvS and SS are so basic it's utterly annoying. Let marvel do the basic plot; that's what I like to see from marvel. DC is supposed to make you think, not devolve itself into some dime-a-dozen plot that we've seen hundreds of times. Screw you blind DCEU fans for making us get more sub-par bs, and screw you David Ayer for not having a bit of backbone and letting WB ruin your movie, and screw you Zack Snyder for beautifully framing a smoking turd. I'm out guys. That's all I got.
