Wonder Woman's role as U.N. ambassador was short-lived.
In October, Wonder Woman was named an honorary U.N. ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls. There was a big event in NYC with Gal Gadot, Lynda Cater, Patty Jenkins, and DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson at the U.N. headquarters and everything. But ever since the news that Wonder Woman would be an ambassador was announced, people protested. And it looks like they've won.
A United Nations spokesman told Reuters that the superhero's role at the organization would end on Friday, despite plans for Wonder Woman to be used in an empowerment campaign for women and girls into 2017. The move is likely in response to an online petition, signed by nearly 45,000 people, asking for Wonder Woman to be removed from the role.
"Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent 'warrior' woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character's current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions," the petition read.
Courtney Simmons, a spokesperson from DC Entertainment, had the following comment: "Wonder Woman stands for peace, justice and equality, and for 75 years she has been a motivating force for many and will continue to be long after the conclusion of her UN Honorary Ambassadorship."
