During a live Facebook chat to promote his new movie, Collateral Beauty, Will Smith explained that he had two scripts in front of him a few years ago to choose from. One was for Suicide Squad and the other was for Independence Day: Resurgence, a sequel to his 1996 hit Independence Day.

“I had the two screenplays in front of me for the Independence Day 2 and for Suicide Squad. I had to choose between the two of those,” Smith said. “Even the choice of going to Suicide Squad — nothing about the qualities of the movie — but the choice of trying to go forward versus clinging and clawing backwards. I do want to aggressively go forward and do new things and create and hopefully be able to stumble upon a new heyday.”

Obviously Smith made the right choice. Despite both movies getting bad reviews, Suicide Squad had much more support from the fans and went on to make over $745 million worldwide. Independence Day: Resurgence made about half of that at just $389 million.

        The concept art said that those "creatures" were parademons. Not sure if they actually were in the movie, but Justice League may answer that question.

          no absolutely not. The things in the film were created through Incubus weird magic. and Parademons only serve Darkseid. IF the things in the film were actually Parademons then Ayer fucked this up even MORE!

            It also makes no sense because we already saw Parademons in BvS (who looked fairly accurate) and they looked nothing like those weird magic demons in SS. Not to mention that Parademons are created through apokoliptian science not weird ass voodoo magic.

            Wouldn't be the first time that Ayer has been inconsistent. First with Harley and Robin, and now someone looked closer at Flash's profile that was given to Bruce in the end credit and it says that Barry has been Flash since 2009.

            The comic Squad was formed to battle Dakseid´s army in their 1st appearance during "Legends". Meaning that the original pitch was EVEN CLOSER to the source comics, but it was certainly too much for a 1st film.

            The uprising of Enchantress is from the 1st JLD arc (Squad´s extras mention it), while Incubus is from an 80s Squad arc. Like it or not but the film was very comic accurate.
            It´s arguably the most comic accurate DCEU film so far and it´s undebatably the deepest rotted in Post Crisis DC lore. They even bothered to use the OG creator John Ostrander as a main attraction in the extras.

            They are created to take down basically anything. It´s also no biggy if they fail. A new Squad can be formed all the time after all.

            The are A-list threats too, especially the zombies army. You also need to keep in mind that Waller is capable of keeping all her Inmates (mostly) in check. That list once included Bane, Lashina (part of Darkseid´s Elite!) and now Zod.

            I didn't even have to read the comics to assume that the squad has faced some very dangerous foes. It's to be expected when in a Marvel or DC universe.

            Pretty much and you need to fill 30 years with all sorts of tales.
            Lower key and anti-terror stories exist too. They arguably dominate, as the US government is still funding the unit, but the 1st big after-Rebirth event for DC is JLA v SS. Not for the first time too...

          "The Eyes of the Adversary" were the lackeys of Incubus but Enchantress alone was responsible for the transformation of the human hosts. He could also directly see though their many... eyes. That´s how he knew how to track everyone in the city.
          The film´s core story is actually pretty clever, the film just glosses over many details.

          They are also a movie only creation, but an 80s Squad story and the 1st JLD arc ever (the 2017 toon film is partially adapting it) served as the basis for the Enchantress going rouge plot.

      God, this movie fucking sucked. I truly dont give a shit about DC Films anymore and I WAS THEIR BIGGEST SUPPORTER. I also notice that fans, in general, are full of shit. They'll bandwagon something even though it's garbage and they just wasted their money on trash. Be honest with yourselves. Pathetic. How are you going to fuck up a movie with serious quality actors (Smith, Robbie, Leto, Davis) playing some of DC's greatest villains, with the writer of Training Day and Fury...Ugh. It's a shame.

      If I was a director, I'd stay FAR away from the DC property. The only person I have faith in is Affleck. After that, DC can fuck off

            I loved Batman v. Superman too (UC, that is). It's incredibly flawed. It has mistakes all over but it's not as atrocious, filmmaking, pacing, script, cinematography, music, and story wise as SS. Look, anyone that can proclaim with total assurance that Suicide Squad is a GOOD movie, simply doesn't know fuck all about films. And you can say art is subjective and all that bullshit, but skill/technique IS NOT!

            No. That's just means that their experience was better than yours. You just have to accept that some people thought it was ok film. I had that same mindset during the the time I hated MoS. I thought people who loved it were idiots, but I've then accepted that they saw some goodness in the film that I didn't see. And over the years, MoS has grown on to me.

            Everyone has a different opinion. No one is stupid or dumb because of it. I liked Batman V Superman enough and found Suicide Squad to be okay at best. I don't really understand anyone's love of either movie, but I respect their opinion.

            I can promise you I'm far from fucking dumb and I actually enjoyed SS. I admit from a film perspective it wasn't great but the cast and the way they introduced the characters was pretty great. Film is subjective, not everyone is going to like the same thing. I didn't like GOTG as much as everyone else did and I don't like CA:CW but that doesn't mean I think everyone else that liked it are "fucking dumb" or should have their face stomped because they're a "dumb motherfucker".

            You have the right to not like a movie, heck to even LOATH a movie but you have no right to call those who did "fucking dumb". Go piss on your own day and Grow up.

    He said in the past that he didn’t want to be only a 'sequel actor' when asked about doing more ID4 and Men in black, he did some great films.
    And even though he's still Will Smith, he put together a good Deadshot.
    Funny thing, i didn’t like him that much before, or even when he was cast, but he was among the best in that film, after SS im rooting for Will.

    Even though i didn't like the movie, Will Smith did a actually good job to play as Deadshot. Everyone did a great job to play as a specific character, even Slipknot was great. :p But i have to say that Amanda Waller was the best in the movie. Dammn she was cold as ice. :p

        Me too. It was the first time i ever cared about the character, as no comic interpretation managed to even remotely engage me. Even Rebirth is somewhat stumbling here.

      Nah, Slipknot was a big pile of nothing. He fulfilled his role in the plot, but the adapted comic scene is more interesting. 1 20sec flashback and having his death scene moved up by 10 minutes would have worked wonders though. Eh.

      That alone is why the movie was such as success. The cast did a great job and that's why people loved the movie. For a movie that was written in 6 days it's not all that bad and by far not the worst CBM we've ever had, although you'd swear that's what people think. I can think of at least 5 that was way worse.

    well since both movies ended up being way behind expectations for them, it doesn't really matter now.

    I do have to admit that Will was one of the best things about SS though. I dont give a shit if he always plays the same kind of Will Smith-ey action hero because he is doing this so fucking well. the Bad Boys films are some of my most favorite action films of all time partly because Will has this incredible mix of charisma, comedy and badassery about him when he does action films. And thats also exactly what he brought to SS. To me he is not really a good character or drama actor. Much like Stallone, Willis, Statham or Schwarzenegger he was born for the action genre. And now I am kinda surprised they never recruited Will for the Expendables movies.

      Agree with everything but the "not really a good character drama or actor" part. Sure they are not most of his films, but he can do pretty good at those too. Just look at Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend, among others.

      He even had great scenes with character in the effing Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!

      If you think he's not good character or drama actor,I strongly encourage you to watch Six degrees of separation,then come back here and admit you made a mistake.
      The problem is he always wants to play the good guy and that limits his choices for roles,even though he's got good range to play different types of characters.

      Lol wut? Will has starred in more drama movies than action movies. If anything, he's better at those. Six Degrees of Separation, Ali, Seven Pounds, The Pursuit of Happyness, Concussion?? These are all high-caliber dramatic performances, for which he's been nominated several times. Problem is those movie don't make bank like that.

      Yes, he could’ve been the main bad guy, and send the squad on a more earthly mission, more military assault.
      Hell, he could’ve even stole the frikkin enchantress doll and hold ransom for Harley, forcing Waller to play hard and send the squad to hunt him, with Harley more in crossroads with the mission..

          While that was more or less a joke,I would have changed the whole story,every characterization,the music(both songs and OST) and Ayer too.
          The action scenes were shit and he filmed them too close,which made them confusing for the viewer.

          I thought the characterization was the best part of the film, the actors did great work with their characters. Heck, even Enchantress until she changed into her dance hall boogie form at the end film. I thought Rick Flagg was kind of blah, but that's the writers fault and I don't think that actor has a lot of charisma.

      Change the goofy tone. Keep the humor, but only the stuff that worked. Make the film seem more like a film and less like a music video. Get rid of all, you heard me, ALL of the awkward, 'Adult Bop - Greatest Hits of the Last Three Decades' songs and use a well made orchestra score instead. Make the villains ACTUAL villains like Ayer initially promised, not anti-heroes. This should have been a film about a conflict of interest between truly bad villains, not an inspirational, "find your inner hero" lovey-dovey feel good film. Dial back the scale of the plot, the fate of the world should not be at stake in a Suicide Squad movie. Use the Joker well, or not at all. Don't piss away a fantastic performance from a gifted actor and tarnish the introduction of arguably DC's best villain. Cara Delevingne's dancing.
      Don't get me wrong, I left the theater entertained, but I don't think I could recommend it to anyone who wasn't already going to see it and I wouldn't call it good.

        Enchantress as a villain was very special. I was so into the movie for the first bit, the superman is dead introduction, every single villain. I liked it but as the plot progressed the movie felt apart

          I loved the Superman is dead bit. It was the first time I felt like this was a real shared universe as BvS had a lot of returning characters from MOS.

      I definitely agree with you about the Joker bit. The film should have been a similar plot, but smaller stakes. Harley has been abused by Joker and Waller thinks she can use her to help stop Joker's operations in Gotham. She forms a Suicide Squad. The Squad begrudgingly works together, but only for personal gain. By the end of the film, the Squad is betrayed by Harley who goes back to the Joker, but she had begun to form relationships with Deadshot and the Squad and feels unsure of her decision by the end. Batman is used throughout, but in the way he should have been in SS. He's a shadow in the dark, coming in to throw a wrench in everyone's plans. He's the monster in the dark, we never see the story from his POV. Waller is approached by Batman who finds out about her SS and doesn't approve and by the end of the film the SS free themselves from Waller and are back on the streets.
      Joker is still on top and gets more to do, the Squad is formed with the potential of a return for Harley in the sequel, the film would be smaller and allow for more drama and character development, we have villains in the DC universe that we respect, but don't root for against the real heroes. Batman is used in a film in a new way on the big screen, and with another bunch of villains teaming up the Justice League becomes even more necessary.
      I'm no writer, but in just a few minutes I've come up with an outline that a good writer could tweak and do some great stuff with. I was really looking forward to SS, but I don't think Ayer and WB delivered on any of their promises and wasted a lot of great talent in the process. I hope the next one will be better, I'm still rooting for the DCEU big time.

        I feel like the movies are excellent at marketing but the final product is meh. Its like they really only care about money and not about the passion for dc comics

      Reducing Joker to about 3 to 4 scenes that play longer, making Slipknot a bit more more than a plot point, removing the 1st helicopter crash, 1 scene of exposition for Incubus, suggesting that Katana worked for Batman to beef up her role (putting her in the after-credits scene and having her leave with Bruce), and it made no sense to use 7 Nation Army right after Paranoid. The effect was way to similar. The crazy death-toll should have been mentioned too. Millions died, according to the novel.

      The film is ultimately better than i expected (Ayer´s ambition was inhuman) and the EE is the way to go. 8,5/10 and i like the film more than MoS. The sequel should be on a smaller scale though, an R would be nice too, and i would love to see "The Onslaught" (formerly The Jihad) adapted.

      PS: The EE scenes should have been in the film, but tighter edited. They now slight clash with the film´s kinetic pacing but most are kinda needed.

      I wouldn't have used The Joker actually. Probably would have make it a political film, the squad has to invade x land and get someone or something without the authorities noticing it. I also wouldn't use people with super powers as big as Enchantress, Diablo is ok except when he became some sort of Maya god out of nowhere, but mostly I prefer "normal" bad guys. If I had to use a character to draw attention (As they did with Joker), I would have go with Batman, he constantly chasing the SS but never being able to expose them ,maybe ending in the same scene between Waller and Bruce had in the movie. Also, the members of the squad should have spent more time together, bonding with each other, not just Deadshot and Harley talking once in a while and the rest considering themselves some kind of twisted family out of nowhere. Harley and Deadshot had too much screen time, making the rest of the squad seem unimportant

          Talking seriously, I would have use him since there are a lot of villains of his gallery in the squad and I enjoy him versus Waller. If there where more superheroes who I could see doing something like that in the DC's movies, I probably wouldn't use Batman. But that was only if I had to use a character like they did Joker, who I didn't hate untill the extended cut

    A Suicide Squad vs. Joker and The Royal Flush Gang movie, would've been (and still would be) freakin' amazing! It would've made Amanda Waller's plan to form the squad, make more logical sense.     While him,Harley and Diablo were by far my favorites in the movie,they still had to adjust the script in order to make Will the bad guy with a heart of gold and at the center piece of it all.He's a really good actor,but he wastes himself by playing the good guy over and over again.He's in a total comfort zone when it comes to picking roles and that's just sad.

    The props department for Suicide Squad made Lawton's wrist magnums functional. In other words, you could kill someone if you loaded live rounds into the wrist weapons' magazines.

    He's got to play Deadshot and the potential to be in Ben Affleck's Batman movie. That's a no brainer. But anyway I don't think he was that good in the role. It was mostly not his fault but Deadshot would've shot Harley without a second thought, and would shoot anyone, allies or enemies, if they stood in his way.

    I'd say the geek consensus on Deadshot was overall positive, up there with Waller and Boomerang. Then Harley with some negativity. Overall "liked" Diablo. Dislike of Killer Croc and Enchantress. Indifference for katana and Flagg. Laughter at Slipknot. And all over the place with mostly love or vitriol for Joker. Makes me wonder what WB and the directors will do with those 2 (with any of em) in non SS films:

    "This is the Joker we're stuck with"
    "Yeah but look at the Deadshot we're stuck with"
    "True"

    I'm friends with Ben Affleck, oh wait, I'm not, but I can't see him making a movie with controversial (putting it nicely) ingredients, but on the other hand, if the studio makes him include Joker, he'll knock it out the park, Rick. I gotta say, I cannot believe I'm more excited to see Deadshot than Joker.

        Aren't the Rogues confirmed for The Flash? If not, I really hope they do go with them, the TV show is already giving us too many speedsters.

        The Flash- Rogues
        Flash 2- Gorilla Grodd
        Flash 3- Eobard Thawne with a PROPER Flashpoint.

        That would make an amazing trilogy.

          I'm not sure. It has to be an origin story, right? The Rogues would be great for the first one. And since Barry's been secretly active for about 7 years (according to SS, and is weird to me for several reasons), they would be perfect for his trial-and-error period. And they could have the Boomerang bank robbery in full.

          I'm totally down for Gorilla Grodd. And seeing as King Kong is coming back in a big way, why not ride those coattails, DC?

          I would absolutely love to have Flashpoint be the third movie. I think it would make a perfect standalone Flash with the beginning and ending being the only pieces connected to the main timeline of the DCEU (Bruce getting his dad's letter). And I'd love to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Thomas Wayne Batman and Lauren Cohan as the Martha Wayne Joker. Fucking hell, that story would make an amazing film right now.

          Your trilogy. I like it, and I want it.

    He made the right choice obviously. And those reviews, sigh. Suicide Squad was alright if you ask me. hell, it was better than alright. But Independence Day 2, boy did I anticipate that movie and was I disappointed. What a complete insult it is to the first one!

      independence got the classic case of sequelization. Cram memorable stuff from the first into it and make it essentially bigger.

    ID2 was a giant flop. He absolutely made the right choices especially seeing how he embodies Deadshot, he nailed the role.

    Pandering to nostalgia will get you nowhere, that seems to be the lesson here.
    I didn´t bother with Resurgence, the 1st was already too much, but is that trilogy dead now? These ready made "instant trilogies" are such a pipe dream...

      First was trilogy, now is shared universe, but my guess is that this trend will pass, and they will go back to making standalone films one at the time, or the whole industry of cinema will be shape into shared universes.

    Just saw this steaming pile & Smith was absolute bollocks (just playing Will Smith again - only this time with a bald head)

    Jared Leto's fag version of the Joker was the shits, glad most of his scenes were cut, otherwise I probably wouldn't have made it through (could have been a blessing looking back, though)

    Quinn was more forced feminist delusion: a 90 pound mouthy twat easily beating all opponents - yeah sure

    The rest were 1 dimensional and bland

    It says something for the quality of the film if the best thing in there was Jai Fucking Courtney

        Might be ok if someone lends it to you, but I wouldn't hold out much hope; there's nothing in there that hasn't been done better before

    My brother in law is a marvel fan. Because of his kid. So it's marvel everything at his place. What bothers me is his ignorance lol he said he didn't watch suicide squad because it makes no sense of putting bad guys to save the world lol
