Screen Junkies has released their "Honest Trailer" for Suicide Squad, and it's.... OK. I didn't like this one as much as I did the one for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
"Gear up with the movie we all thought would put the DC Extended Universe back on track, but instead gave us..... a pop-soundtracked mess? Suicide Squad!," they wrote as their YouTube video description.

Spielberg gave us sky beams in the 70s, not modern comic films, and this is the most comic accurate film Joker since 1966. Flag was also the only one briefed, besides Waller, and he is the team leader, so him giving us exposition is bad... how? Katana´s role on the Squad is why she was on so many DC teams too. Being an enforcer (the sword can actually kill metas) is what she does, but she could have used 1 scene more of set-up, i guess. Croc wasn´t a black stereotype too. I myself am half black, so let´s just say that i can judge such things.
This video is very phoned it, but it´s much better than the BvS one. That "spoof" was just pure anger...
PS: The joke about Joker being a "cat-person" is technically correct. Read DKR again or BN´s TDKR: The Last Crusade review by Jay. Again, most comic accurate life action Joker in 50 years.
Most comic accurate? To what comic book?
That expression means jackshit when it comes to characters like The Joker, because there's been so many interpretations, it falls flat of any meaning. It also doesn't make it good in the slightest.
Also, Croc wasn't a black stereotype, I do agree, but that's because he was devoid of any kind of characterization. You can't really call it a character when the most he does is growl, swim, and kill faceless hordes of shitty enemies...
Skybeams are done to death regardless of when it first showed up.
comic accurate in what way?
Letoker´s characterization, motivation (neither Nolan nor Burton got this part "right") and backstory line up well with the books. Even his trademark "big gun" had a cameo in the weapons-circle and he wore clothing right out of the books in multiple scenes.
He also very much looks the part. The (cool) tats are a slight departure, but the comics gave us crazier looks. The overall style won´t last anyway. None of his looks do, as he goes with the times, but the Blue-ray extras even showcase the original scene where he lost his teeth in the books. The amount of comics and arcs the films references is frankly insane, not even Snyder should be able to keep up here, and Ayer love for the source comic can´t be denied.
Like Leto´s / Ayer´s decisions or not but this is the character i have been reading for 20 years. The film could have used less of him though, as his presence nearly derails the main plot (the bike scene in the EE is too long for example), but i loved what i saw. Letoker is a 10/10.
PS: Squad had the best sky beam in years, the best once since Akira even. It actually did shit! The film´s somewhat shoved under the rug death toll was in the millions btw.
Serious questions because I obviously don't know all the Batman comics. And since you've been reading for the past 20 years you sure know more than I do.
In what comics can I seen the Joker with unbuttoned shirts and/or a grill? I wanna see this comic-accurate look. Funny how the tats which you mention are a departure from the comic are the only thing I have seen in the comics (cover of batman and robin the boy wonder no.8)
And in what comics can I see him motivated to rescue Harley and treat her right? I've seen Harley do that a few times but never the other way around.
Who cares? If he had slapped her around a couple of times would that have been better for you? He does offer to give her to another man, electrocutes her, and leaves her in a car to drown. If you really need a reason for there not being more abuse, half of their story is flashbacks Harley has, and it makes sense that she wouldn't want to remember the times he hit her but does remember the time he "saved" her.
Also the rumored conflict of Harley picking the Squad over the Joker would have created more conflict in their seemingly "perfect" relationship, but it also would have had people complaining that she barely knew those people. So I think the direction they went was better than the alternative.
I never asked for more abuse. But in the comics and cartoons he doesn't seem to care as much about her as he does in the movie. Flashbacks are fine actually as there is more of that type of relationship going on. Present is where things change. If you think about it roles were kind of inverted in the movie. She's more Jokerish and he's more Harley
This relationship seems to actually have a sexual component which wasn't able to be explored in the cartoons, not sure about animated movies or comics, so that I think makes it already, slightly, different. Also some of the things the Joker says in the extended version makes it seem like Harley messed him up more than normal, which might make him more dependent on her. I've seen a lot of people say that the "real" Joker only has this sort of infatuation for Batman. Maybe Batman isn't around because he is assembling the JL so Joker's infatuations turn to Harley.
I've read a few comics with Harley and the Joker but my main idea of their relationship before this movie comes from TAS, and I will agree that the relationship in SS is different. I don't mind the differences because it works in this movie. I think like with "smiling" Superman, people want/expect too much too soon. The DCEU seems to use aspects of these characters that work in the stories they are trying to tell, without trying to check everyone's wishlist boxes. I'm sure either in the Harley movie or a future Batman movie we will see more of the "classic" Joker/Harley relationship, whether that's to lead to a breakup in the solo movie or because Batman is a bigger focus for him in the other movie, it will then fit the story.

The relationship is not different. harley is Joker's favourite toy. He abuses her and all that, it's like how releases stress if you want, and even can tell her to go away. BUT in the moment she isn't there he wants her to come back because he misses his favourite toy.
That can be seen in a number of comics. Some examples that opo up in my head right now is Joker wanting to know where she has been in Mad Love and how jelous he got in No man's Land when one of his own thugs wanted to "date" Harley

Look up in the thread. I did a picture gallery on the comic Joker above, to not get overlooked here. I am also about 3 weeks away from having read EVERY Batman + Tec issue since ca. 1970 + nearly all issue from the direct spin-offs. Only pure trash, as Ann Nocenti´s Catwoman gets skipped by me. I also read the first 5-ish years of the Golden Age Batman (till the books went to shit) and endless reprints of the Golden / Silver Age in between but i ain´t closing that gap fully. Late Golden Age and all of Silver Age Batman was rubbish.
Greg Capullo + Scott Snyder also featured at least 6 different takes on the Joker in their 5 year N52 run. This is from 1 "single story" alone. Comics are crazy man.
Cool, thanks. But I still didn't see an unbuttoned shirt or grill. (The closest thing is the first picture but that is just normal joker without a shirt, he even got suspenders on, something Letoker probably would't wear)
If a mash up of all those jokers is what we got in the movie then I am disappointed because weather we like it or not I don't think anyone can deny the street gangster vibe and looks he carries.
I still see a street gangster before a clown. And I like my joker happy, silly and unpredictable not angry and depressed. But again, that's just my opinion.
I terms of relationship and personality, I'll give you that. But a character like the Joker which is so visually iconic turned into an M13 member is what bothered a lot of us.

man, you are so silly. Those two versions were done after Leto's look was defined. And even in the official art released AFTER THE MOVIE, the grill is removed because how stupid it is. Also I never said anything about color palette which is the only reason he still has a resemblance to the Joker. Still no grill or unbuttoned shirts.
Quit trying man, just admit theres no such look in the comics.
If you like it, fine, nothing wrong. But don't go preaching this is an accurate look because its just something that hasn't been done before. Maybe they've done separate elements before but never all together.

We certainly have too many blue sky light in films today but Spielberg (+ anime) fucked us decades ago in that regard , and not the last few years of comic films.

The one for MoS is a legit masterpiece but their writing went to shit about a year ago and just look what the channel is up to now. You would need to pay me money to watch one of these new "pop couture icon roasts".
Don´t start producing creative content if you want to remain a critic is one of the lessons here.
Man, I know they've trashed DC before but theyre really not wrong here. I liked the extended version of BVS a lot and Will Smith and Margot Robbie were great, but Suicide Squad was a watered down train wreck of a film and Leto, even if he had no tattoos no grille and was the main villain he still would have been just as awful because hes literarily overreacting in every single scene like The Mask Jim Carrey more than anything and I said that like two months ago. He's so awful it's stunning and the dialogue was really poor and insultingly stupid even for a fun comic book film, with a weak 3rd act and enchantress was terrible at the end for a villain with cheesy cgi for her and her brother.

Funny part is Batman is the best part of that movie. Seeing him whip out the cuffs for Deadshot and begrudgingly give mouth to mouth to Harley so she doesn't die are the 2 most 'Batman' things I've seen from Bat-fleck. Apart from the warehouse fight that is. That was just... so much awesome.
To be honest some of the points were true though,the team doesn't really have any major heavy hitters to take out Superman level threats and Katana really didn't do much besides stand around and fight a bit (especially after the whole "soul sword" mention) plus the Joker really wasn't that great - I thought Leto was just doing some bizarre Johnny Depp impression the whole time
I thought he could have been great, there were great glimpses there but to be honest the script for Suicide Squad was just plain awful. Some of the dialogue was very poor and the editing was terrible, even in the extended cut.
I think Leto under Affleck's direction will be much better. He is one of the best male actors working today but actors even great ones can only overcome a bad movie to a certain point. I have a feeling Leto with Affleck's words and direction will pull out something special.
Diablo turned out to be useful and when Waller was pitching the team like that they still had the Enchantress.

Pretty accurate, but the Honest Trailers for BvS and MoS were much funnier.
Just rewatched Batman:Assault on Arkham recently, and I have to wonder...how exactly did they manage to mess Suicide Squad up?
1. Hired a C-list director
2. Gave him 6 weeks to write the script
3. Had no supervision over him
4. Panicked after the BvS fiasco and had an advertisement company do the reshoots
That very toon film mismanaged the characterizations of Batman by a downright shocking degree, the Joker was badly implemented once he left his cell, the story 100% invalided itself by the end (like WTF?) and none of it fits into the Arkham "canon". I like it too but it´s a Swiss cheese, in parts.
Put the Squad ep. of JLU on a pedestal, if anything, and i would like to remind everyone that the creator of the Squad comic more than supported Ayer´s vision. He is also featured on the Blue-ray extras, nice.
The movie wasn't perfect. But I don't think Batman was that far off. And honestly, the characterization of the Squad was done well. At least they were actually bad guys, unlike in Suicide Squad

The Squad also needs to function and it 100% didn´t in the toon. That is a blatant invalidation of the source comic´s and the toon´s very own premise. The comic is literally about bad people being forced to do good, as Ayer said and then did, and the toon was about a much of psychos descending into chaos.

Meh! This one feels super forced. The movie is simply not bad so these jokes aren't landing for me.
2 days ago I was on a plane heading to a Spanish speaking country and at least half the passengers, me included, were watching a spanish dubbed version of Suicide Squad and everyone seemed to really be enjoying it. I made a point to look around at the other monitors to see people's reactions.
I seriously loved the dubbed version, makes the movie sound even crazier and funnier. It reinforced my good opinion of the movie and it's rewatchability factor, it holds up really well.
I don't know what it is with some people and this movie. They can't seem to just take it for what it is rather than what they wanted it to be. It is a good movie.

is a objectively bad movie, nothing wrong with liking it, but no point in saying is good because is not, it has no rythim at all, it is incoherent, we just need the original complete cut
Besides the first four minutes, which really wouldn't have worked better anywhere else, it flows just like numerous other action films; the characters are introduced, the problem is introduced, on the way to solve the problem there is bonding and conflict, and finally the problem is solved. It's not a complicated movie.

They already released the only cuts of Suicide Squad that will ever be available. It's your problem if you don't want to accept that, like stop being such a spoiled little millennial always wanting everything to be perfectly suited to your likes and needs. It's not a Facebook page, a Whopper or an ITunes playlist, it's a movie & you have ZERO control over it.
You say this and yet they watered it down specifically because spoiled SJW millennials wouldn't be able to handle the Joker actually being really abusive to Harley, so they wussed out and changed the story completely around and cut stuff out so as not to offend the precious millennials. And the movie was a train wreck with good performances from about three actors and the mask from 1994, I mean Jared Leto overreacting and trying too hard in the few scenes he was in, dumbed down dialogue, and a terrible third act with a shitty cgi duo of villains. Some of the jokes very much land and I'm a huge DC fan.
They can do better and its okay to admit that and enjoy a polished turd as long as we're level headed about it. Many of the jokes may not feel funny if they're basically pointing out its a poorly written movie so then people who like it feel bothered and insulted like theyre Insulting you. Die hard is a fun and compelling action movie, the goonies is a well done comedy adventure, deadpool is funny and well written even if a dumb movie it succeeds at what it's trying to be. This movie didn't - it's not terrible; its just a mish mash of potential that ended up a jumbled train wreck and Leto could've had the Classic Joker look with no tattoos and his overreacting still would have been cringeworthy. He's bad in every single scene.
Do you understand that most people liked the movie, critics aren't people btw, you're in the minority on this one. SSquad isn't the problem, you're the problem and No one cares about your review of the movie at all.
The only way you'll ever see that is to buy enough TimeWarner stock for them to let you watch a copy on-premises in Burbank. They will never let the "Harley gets totally abused and finally emancipates herself from the Joker" storyline see the light of day; it no longer fits with the overall story they want to tell (which, I think, is going to involve the two of them back together in another film... can't make that work if he pushed her out of the chopper to murder her).
It's a shame that some people can't get past some tattoos and dental work. Leto's Joker is great.

yep. I think he is kinda going over the top. especially in the harley conversation on the street. I feel like he could be good but he is trying to hard.A better director would probably fit better to his acting careers
I can see what your saying. However I really like that scene. I took that over the top speech as something Joker just says to others, and maybe even himself, to project the idea that he is more than a common thug. At the same time I could see it all just being an act to avoid actually dealing with what Harley is saying and his feelings for her. In the Arkham breakout scene he tells her that whatever she did left him in a black hole of rage and confusion. So I took it as the "real" Joker is the one in the car that looks pissed off and confused and that just doesn't want to deal with Harley. He doesn't start smiling until she forces him to stop, almost like he is putting on a mask. This is why his voice is different when he says that she is a pain in the ass and at the end of the conversation when he tells her to go away.
As evident from lots of comments here, most people seem to just want a "crazy" guy who laughs, kills people, and who likes to mess with Batman. However I like that this version seems to have more depth. It was there with Ledger's Joker too but was never really explored in that film. I think this is partially because Harley is the key to getting under the Joker's façade, and also because it was unnecessary for the story being told in TDK.
Ace Ventura and James Franco as inspiration for Leto's Joker had me laughing so hard. Overall, I thought it was funny, but definitely not among the top ones. That latest Villain Pub in HISHE was amazing, now that was really funny...best HISHE to date.

It is a flawed film, but an entertaining film, didn't deserved the ruthless attack it suffered, people wanted this film to 'save' the franchise, maybe WB made the mistake to promote it like such, in the end its just a good comic book flick.
WB made the mistake of last minute changing the whole movie to make it bad, just entertainning, and mindless like the mcu for mindless audiences, is a bad movie
I agree on the studio messing up badly with the cut, but i disagree with the whole film being bad, first act (squad intros, flashbacks) was excellent, all the way to the villain escaping, there it went downhill.
The bar setup and building scenes with Waller we're the good parts of a bad final act.
But all trough the film, character interaction was great, and saved much of it.
It was a successful movie, but a letdown globally for half of the fans (or more?).
Perhaps this is a good time to say just how much I HATE Honest Trailers! Maybe somebody should do an honest trailer about Honest Trailers...then pull the narrator's throat meat out with a slightly hook-ended boomerang. Anybody? Anybody? (Don't bitch at me for being too violent. It was a comic reference. Trust me.)

OMG they nailed it! I LOL'd hard. I'm sorry for the years of my life I invested being so pumped for this movie, I'm allowed to laugh at how bad it ended up on so many levels.
Oh man that was harsh, reminds me of Comedy Central Roasts. I don't think anyone who enjoyed the film(myself included) thought the movie was perfect or even close to it. I just rewatched it yesterday and I still enjoy the hell out of it. Interesting about the six weeks fact, didn't realize Ayer had such a short time to write and prep a script, thanks for that WB.
We don´t know how long the script took, Ayer himself (a professional writer) pitched the film to WB, and be glad that HT didn´ t use the 2 weeks rumor. Parts are clearly improvised though.
The re-shoots can be blamed on this, to a degree at least.
PS: Weird Science was written in 2 days. It was a hit, it then got a 88 ep. show, and a remake is coming. Meaning that i have no idea how long a script needs in the oven to be a hit.
I got down-votes and people trying to "discredit" me that Letoker has no basis in the comics, despite getting no counter argument.... Random up-votes "against me" isn´t how logic work you all, and he was a B plot anyway. Regardless, i now present you empirical proof that Ayer´s crew reads comics, and how.
