Here's an interesting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fact that I didn't know (and hopefully you didn't either). Lex Luthor's theme song is actually a corrupted, distorted version of Hans Zimmer's Superman theme.

DCEU Facts pointed this out on Twitter in February and the tweet was retweeted tonight by Junkie XL (who worked on the music for Batman v Superman with Hans Zimmer), thus giving it some credibility. Here's what they had to say:

Lex Luthor's theme, The Red Capes Are Coming, in Batman v Superman, is actually a perversion and corruption of Hans Zimmer's Superman theme, which can be heard in An Ideal of Hope and other soundtracks from Man of Steel, as well as in the Batman v Superman OST. Using the same two note structure but at different tones and speed, and slightly flipped, Lex's theme is a warped, backwards perversion of Superman's.

    I'm not going to just say this just to seem like a know it all, but the second time I saw BvS in theaters I caught onto this. It was the two notes that gave it away for me and I'm so happy this is confirmed now. When I first heard it I thought to myself how cool it would be if Hans and junkie xl wanted to make a mirrored version of superman's theme to show the difference between Lex and Superman which is a big part of the comics . Thanks for sharing!

        Your point being that directors/composers/writers should not include fan service so that the movie is of better quality? That sounds like the exact wrong thing to do when making a movie that is based on comic book stories and their characters.

          I'm not an exclusive Marvel or DC fan, I enjoy what both offer in terms of characters and stories. I just think that Zack Snyder's vision for Batman V Superman was not completely adequate. I loved what he did with Watchmen! man I love it and I still can watch over and over. BvS? Nah, he missed that one.

            It's really hard for me. I completely understand the issues that people had with BvS as a film. But as a longtime fan of Batman, Superman, and even Zack's earlier work, there's just so much to love.

    I knew this since March / April due to our (dysfunctional) reddit. Some of my linked analysis bits had this info too and i heard the whole soundtrack, due to the leak, before the film. The track sounded like a Knightmare Superman theme before i got context. This related bit is more interesting though:

    The fascist Superman has a reversed swastika (a sun symbol!) as his coat of arms. THAT is attention to detail. Hail Snydra and godspeed to Zimmer. He did good by us since 2005 and BvS was his masterpiece.

    I agree. The rooftop scene with Superman and the scene with Senator Finch were very well done. That Jolly Rancher scene, not so much. He was a pretty intriguing villain.

        It was a cringe-worthy scene; I could not imagine Lex possibly doing that. And how could I forget the speech! That was also a good scene. Almost all of Lex's scenes in BvS were entertaining and great.

            Definitely. Looking forward to see this side of Lex taking "control" if you know what I mean. Also seeing him as bald from now on is going to be interesting. His big hair was well, a big part of his flamboyant personality. Really looking forward to see how Lex will operate in Justice League.

I totally get why people didn't like lex, Luthor is not a sacred character IM personal O, I really enjoyed this update/fresh version (way better than Leto's Joker can we agree??) . But still like everyone else I'm excited to see bald lex and if he's more like the more familiar recent Lex.

          What's so difficult to understand about a comic book movie where the main plot is "Superman is hated by some, loved by others. Lex hates him and formulates cartoonish plans to take him out, both physically and mentally, and to make him hated with very unwise decisions. Batman hates Superman because he is strong as fuck and can kill humanity if he suddenly decides ''saving bitches is for suckas, I want to wreck shit up''. Batman fights superman. They make ammends. Superman confronts Luthor. Doomsday is born and wrecks shit up. Trinity unite! Supes dies. ''We need the Justice League! To the Batmobile!''. The end."
          Sorry, but not everything people dislike is what they don't understand. Maybe, they simply didn't like it. Again, this awful point of view you have to force yourself into thinking something you like (you can fucking like anything, why the defensiveness) is better than it actually is. Fuck my life, seriously.

      I've heard people say I thought it was going to be a 40min fight, and yet those same people say that the fight should have been shorter when talking about MoS. Also people said it should have been a full on fight with superman not holding back, but also say that superman should have been less angry at the world; you can't have it both ways. Even after WB said it was a deep story movie, news outlets and people would say: we all know this is just going to be a heavy action popcorn flick. Then when it came out they where upset there was too little action.

          A title is not an 'only literal' thing, it can be a line from the film, can be a plot point, it can only exaggerate or enhance the meaning of a film, where's the actual "civil war" in Captain America civil war?
          its an analogy, the "versus" is deeper in their different psychology, their view of one another trough the whole film.
          If i misunderstood you and you are literally calling folks for not knowing the V from versus, my apologies.

        I've also heard some people say that Batman and Superman should've fought more than once like in Avengers. I seem to recall that the Avengers fighting each other wasn't the focus of the film. It was just the first money shot of the film.

      People had different expectations from the movie and they'll always bitch about something.After so much Marvel formula,MoS and BvS took a hard left and made you feel uncomfortable.
      Even though they have flaws,they're more rich in details and themes than what the opposition is doing and they stand up to repeated viewings.At least for me they do.

        iam all down for risks. But i think doomsdays needed some backstory, the reason why bruce suddenly kills (sure it was hinted by the costume but it would have been a great opportunity for a death in the family sequence)

          But people already complained that film had too many arcs from the comics in it. They would've complained that the Death in the Family sequence should've been saved for a Batman film. Hinting it was the best option because now it makes casual moviegoers wonder what exactly happened to make Batman so nihilistic.

            Not really. It's mainly who just want to see the event. Bruce looking at a torn-up Robin costume was all the answer you need to know why he's gone on the deep end. Comic book fans know the answer, but some want to see it for some unnecessary justification. Casual moviegoers can plainly see that the costume has some form of importance to Bruce even if they don't know who Robin is.

            i just think it would´ve been more appropiate to include a death in the family flashback scene to show why batman acts the way he does instead of the nightmare scene. You have to remind yourself that the causual audience saw bale last time and he was like totally different.

            Spoon feeding is one of the worst things you could do in a movie and a lot of them try to explain basic stuff like they would to a 5 year old.

          All jokes aside,I think he was just fine.A means to an end.A bastard child of sorts made by Lex,who was also traumatized by Lex Sr. All those nervous ticks and frustration came from not being good enough for dad.
          I suppose 1-2 minutes of going into the Death in the family stuff could have been done,sure,but I'm not gonna be sore about them not including it.

    Like all great art, this will be really appreciated later on.
    Man of Steel and Batman v Superman have the best score of this film age.
    I catch myself "singing" this great pieces while making lunch, or walking down the street, i laugh at myself, and recognize this amazing films.

    A great album. I don't think it's Zimmer's best ever work however tracks like Beautiful Lie and the Wonder Woman theme are brilliant. Him and Junkie XL knocked this soundtrack for a six. I could listen to Beautiful Lie on replay again and again.

    One of the laziest ST ever composed for a big budget movie. Hans Zimmer is talented but I fear Junkie XL (who may very well be the worst composer working in Hollywood today) will completely screw up the Justice League theme. I mean, he already destroyed the Batman theme with generic "BAAAAAM BAM BAM BAM BAAAAAAM" - so fucking uninspired and weak. He will do the same for Justice League... Mark my words, it will be another stupid track with loud honking noises coupled with relentless percussion. As if we haven't heard that a thousand times before.

        The fuck does Snyder have got to do with anything? Junkie XL is a HORRIBLE composer all around. Let me guess, this is yet another one of those "you only hate it b/c it's DC!! Because it's Snyder". Give me a break... There is a reason why these soundtracks have gotten horrible reviews. There's a reason why their compositions are critically panned. Snyder is irrelevant.

          That was my question, you don’t have to get angry, your problem then is with this specific composer in this specific film i guess, because you can only speculate about Justice League, as we all do, we know nothing yet.
          I dont know what other films XL has worked on, then i can judge better the guy in general, but in BvS i was more than satisfied with the score.
          I enjoyed the Batman music less than Lex's and WW's, i prefer the Nolan pace better, but hey, i think its really well accomplished, and for me it works in this film, it captures the older, more rusted vibe of the Batman, but well, everybody has their own taste.

            He qualifies for me then, i loved Mad Max score, and if i remember correctly, it received generally positive reviews, so the other guy's claim of panned composer is invalid, good to know.
            Well i hope JL brings a great score, i hope its a catchy one ;)

            Who says I'm angry? And why would you even ask such a question, if not to imply I'm just another "DC hater"? You don't start randomly asking that question.
            Composition is a skill, it's a field of work. Just like any other form of art, there is a certain familiarity in the artist's work. I can recognize Zimmer's scores without ever having listened to it before. Just like I can recognize Williams', Horner's, and yes Junkie's scores with 100% accuracy. Not because I am so "musically gifted", it's just plain easy to hear the differences. Point being, we know what to expect. Junkie won't magically learn how to compose ACTUAL music in a year's time. He won't suddenly change his style from loud, shallow and bombastic to subtle, integrate and unique. He - like most composers - uses the same patterns over and over again. This isn't exactly an issue, but the problem is that Junkie's style is so void of substance. So while it might work once or twice (like in Mad Max or 300) it simply falls flat after a while. He has no originality and practically no composing skills (I'm not exaggerating, he's never composed anything in a traditional sense. He only uses computers and synthesizers which explains the "fake" sound we've grown to expect from him).
            And when it comes to the Batman theme... It is easily the worst piece of audio garbage I've ever heard. It is literally just one freaking note repeated at random rhythm, and that's it. It's terrible. And the only reason why Batman's theme was so bad while WW's theme and Beautiful Lie was at least decent, is because the latter 2 were composed by Zimmer. While Batman's theme is 100% Junkie. It frustrates me knowing this talentless hack is awarded work he quite frankly doesn't deserve. Maybe it is my musical background, idk... As someone who listens to classical music every day, this is something that I think is very important (the maintenance of a certain composing standard).

            Well, the guy did a lot of other cool things, including Mad Max which i love, and got good reviews, so he wasnt really 'panned'.
            Like i said, everybody's taste is different.

            No, I'm not exaggerating. In the context of Hollywood blockbusters (as I have specified before) this is among the absolute worst compositions I've ever heard. And so what if I hate it? Lol... I do. I think it's terrible, that's the point. Junkie is not a good composer and he's composed extremely mediocre music at best. A ONE NOTE theme is inexcusable and lazy beyond words.

            You hate him, you think he is terrible, doesn’t mean that he is not a good composer, he was chosen by Miller for Mad Max, and then chosen by Snyder, and Zimmer for BvS, if you have a problem is cause of your own taste on music, your problem, not his.

            I never ONCE "stated my opinion as fact". However, composing is a skill and skill is objective, not subjective. Junkie is not a good composer. That is not my "opinion". That is fact. The same way that Channing Tatum is objectively speaking inferior to Leonardo DiCaprio in terms of pure acting skill.
            It's not "my taste in music" that is the problem. I listen to film scores all the time, this is exactly my taste in music. I am talking about execution, not taste. I love Salmon I think it's delicious (my "taste") but if you overcook it, it's not delicious. That's not "my opinion", that's fact.
            And in case you haven't noticed, the fact that he keeps being offered jobs (despite the fact that his music is critically panned by music critics) is the only problem here.

            Not to interject but, you know there's more to JXLs 14+ min "Men are still Good" Batfleck theme than "BAAAAM BAM BAM BAM BAAAAM BAAAM".? (Which I will admit is repeptative when it first appears).

            The theme itself starts with a 3 note movtive that reminds me of Jerry Goldsmith's ALIEN theme. This builds and builds to the point where the BAAAM BAAMs come in. it would be lazy as fuck if he left it like that but JXL builds up in it with strings and a choral section that really harkens back to Danny ELfman and Shirley Walkers batman music. And this is why ultimately I like it. And what makes the cliche baaaams work. Cause they're really just the percussive section. Not the actual theme. Cause that would be silly!

            My two cents.

            Of course there's more to it... But the main theme itself, or the underlying motive which is always present, is exactly the same thing for 5 minutes. There is absolutely not substance here. Sometimes it is easy for people to forget the complexity of composition when this is all we hear nowadays. I advice you to listen to Schindler's List - Remembrances / I Could Have Done More or The Village - The Vote or even Gravity - Shenzou. These just came to mind... There is originality and complexity in these compositions. This is simply not present anywhere throughout the Batman theme. Even Elfman's original themes are on a completely different level, technically speaking. There are far more layers to it, not to mention that every instrument supports the other. With Junkie, it's the basic stuff: your base "rhythm" (bam bam bam) coupled with relentless honking noises - then up top of that a simple melody. That's it. Sure, a couple extra layers appear the last few seconds, but nothing groundbreaking. These different "melodies" (if we can even call it that) do not have any harmony to them. They all simply add up to lots of very loud noises. It's not intelligently put together. When I listen to classical music, it sounds like a puzzle which is very smartly put together with different rules. When I listen to Junkie, I hear the same damn thing over and over again.

            It's a fair criticism. I can totally see why some people aren't keen on how Junkie writes and arranges music - he was a DJ after all! But I still find him very interesting. His score for Mad Max Fury Road was one of my favourites in 2015. Its so percussive, rhythmic and relentless. JXL has his limitations, but that OST really exhibits his strengths, Plus I love the Arabian flavour he added for 300: Rise of an Empire. He no Zimmer, Elfman or Williams (no chance) but he can only get better from here.

            I know he was a DJ, and to me at least, that explains his talent (or lack thereof). I've said before that his style can work and I specifically mentioned Mad Max and 300. Even though I think the MM score isn't pleasing to listen to, it at least fits the relentless and chaotic nature of that film, and I do like the track Brothers in Arms. As for 300, kinda liked it because it was my first exposure to Junkie, but the problem is that he does the same thing over and over again. There's no difference between his 300 tracks and his BvS ones. Sure, the melody is different, but structurally, they are completely the same. And that's what I take issue with... His lack of originality and relentless repetition. And that's why I fear the Justice League Theme will lack any sort of depth or substance.

    I remember realizing this and getting really excited for Bizarro! Especially due to the screen-grab from the trailer with Superman kneeling in front of Lex and with that Bizarro-ish, pissed expression. Doesn't mean I was stuck up on this when it didn't happen and let it come in my way of absolutely enjoying the movie, which I actually prefer to my rather childish expectations. If only more people were capable of that!

      I believe there are way more of us out there than what critics say, the "anti" only exist online, i haven't found ONE single person who hated it, and while some got a bit bored and wanted more popcorn action, everybody i've talked to agreed it was a great film, so...

        I'm really think EVERYONE is going to eventually see the movie, and wonder what all the fuss was about and enjoy it. I hope Justice Legue gets an underdog boost. I think after looking back on this HUGE year for comic book movies, most people will remember BvS.

          I really wish that happens!
          That could warrant another DC Film by Zack and I wish it'll be Green Lantern Corps! Could you imagine what Zack could do with a GL film with the seriousness that it deserves? Zack's visual storytelling would shine at GL's mental constructs!

    I know they are really hyping JL as super positive and fun etc. How great would it be if the JL are battling Steppenwolf, just when they are defeated we see Superman, in the sun! We are saved. OMG he's wearing the black suit, but wait ... The S is.... Backwards??? Lex theme starts playing as Bizzaro Superman finishes off the JL. Flash runs back in time and warns everyone and they figure out how to save Supes!!!!
