'Suicide Squad' ends its domestic box office run just $5 million shy of 'Batman v Superman'

Suicide Squad hit theaters on August 5th, and it has finally ended its box office run in the United States and Canada. The movie was a huge hit despite being slammed by critics and made $325.1 million. That's just $5 million less than the $330.3 million that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made domestically.

Overall, Suicide Squad made $745.5 million worldwide, and that's without the help of China, which banned the movie. Batman v Superman was allowed in China and made $873.2 worldwide, with about $100 million of that coming from China.

The fact that Suicide Squad came that close to a movie featuring Batman and Superman is huge, and just goes to show what a big success it was among audiences. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes recently attributed Suicide Squad's massive box office numbers as a reason why the company will exceed earnings estimates for the year.

Suicide Squad will be released on Digital HD next week, and Batman News is giving away a lot of free copies! The movie will hit Blu-ray on December 13th.

to be fair, Suicide Squad even outgrossed Civil War past the initial 3 weeks. In other words, a bunch of nobodies outlegged a critically-acclaimed Avengers movie featuring Spider-Man.

    It also shows you what happens when a blockbuster remains unchallenged for almost 2 months.CA:CW had to go against The Angry Birds,Xmen Apocalypse,Alice through the looking glass,Neibourgs 2 and the list goes on,all of which where considered big releases even though some of them failed.SS didn't really have a challenge.Nevertheless considering both negative reviews and "the bunch of nobodies" situation it really surpassed the expectations.I never thought it would go over 600-650mil at best.

      Let me point out that the intent of my original comment was not to shit on SS...but to shit on BvS. Challenged or not, SS clearly clicked with the general audience. BvS did not, and that was its failure.

    Suicide Squad had a huge drop off the second weekend, with a smaller first weekend than Civil War... SS literally had nothing over Civil War, in any aspet, whatsoever, besides a smaller budget... (hurray??)

      Comparing CW to SS, SS has better legs (made more money mid-to-late run) and a bigger multiplier (2.44 vs 2.28), those are the facts

      One was released in May, the other in August. One had competition from tons of blockbusters, including another Super hero movie, the other had no competition from a very weak August. Making more in the later run means nothing, if the movie didn't even make more in it's final run. People had nothing to watch, so they watched the super hero movie that was on theatres at the time, no surprise there. The multiplier is true, and fucking hurray for that... It still was a very small difference that didn't make a fucking difference in the end.

      And that is very understandable given Cap 3 was released in May, with a ton of competition (including another super hero movie), and Suicide Squad had no competition in August (very well known for being the slowest month of the Summer, box office wise), and from week 5 onwards, the differences are so minute it doesn't even matter.
      What matters is what each movie ended up making for this comparison, and then there is no comparison to be made. Cap 3 made over 400M more than Suicide Squad. No need to start comparisons where none exist.

That's good, considering the production budget and marketing budget for Suicide Squad was way smaller than Batman v Superman.

Also, don't be surprised if the international box office is higher than shown. The numbers for the international box office haven't been updated since the 24th of October.

  I agree. I was shocked about it. Deadpool had a lot of promo in february but BvS, not so much and my theater didn't released the trailer that early. I used to go to theater many times a week and I just saw the trailer one or two times a week before the release. Suicide squad had trailers months before ! There was a problem for promoting this movie.

This is pretty good, and considering the potential disasters sequels and reboots are, $872 worldwide is also pretty good for two characters on their second reboot. I would love to see how Iron Man does if/when he's on his second reboot.

This! Marvel relishes on how good their characters are presented, but forget that they have no past iterations on screen (well, they pretend some never happened) i want to see Iron Man and Captain getting a reboot, and if it actually works, like it did with Batman and Superman.

It is "anti-government" and prominently features witchcraft, both are a huge no-no in their media.
Katana didn´t help either, but you can easy edit around that. A lot of China cuts of violent films tend to be bitched nonsense too, as the need to get a low-ish rating, and less than 30 foreign film are allowed into cinemas each year. Let´s see how this movie export deal will develop in the future too, with who just got elected in the US.

BvS actually overachieved. For the theatrical release to have gotten so many repeat viewings, despite that first hour and half of mostly lethargic and dramatic set-up, of a story that so many people hated, was a small miracle. BvS hardly overachieved but it diffidently put the DCEU on the map by being the most discussed film of the year. It also left heathy room to grow for JLA, but the Avengers days of 1,5 bil. are even gone for Disney.

You're correct about BvS having more repeat viewings. It took less than 2 months for the BvS bluray to outsell the Age of Ultron bluray (which has been out for over a year). It's a good sign of a growing DCEU fanbase.

I am glad that the DCEU is already experiment in "Phase 1" and that it is more importantly paying off.
I somtimes need to show people something new, just in a familiar format. Iron-man is now a hotter cinematic commodity than Batman or Superman, so give me all your Aquamen and JLDs you can get.

I don´t know if Squad "needed" 175 mil. but that an A-list studio deliberately made a blockbuster with such a budget, despite knowing that it would offend Chinese censors due to the anti-establishment premise, witchcraft and maybe even a positive Japanese character (i look forward to her missing snippets, as he was undeserved in the TC) needs to be acknowledged.

Say what you want about the DCEU but it had a successful test run in 2016. The market proved willing to support the films and that is 100X more important that a number on a (dysfunctional) film review aggregation site. Just ask the "acclaimed" Ghostbusters or Star Trek 3... I liked both fine but look at how poorly they performed in the end. I prefer a few critical beating in 2017 and then sequels, rather than "acclaim" and a corpse of a series. Superman Returns (lol RT) say hello btw.

Who is bragging? This post is arguable a criticism of the (fine) performance of BvS, if anything.
It´s still nice to see a film that the media 100% wanted to fail over-perform and hit the Zeitgeist. (You should be able to sympathize here.) Especially as the film did this whole "diversity" thing right. Something that the internet often demands, yet rarely rewards.

Tbh, as a big DCEU fan, I am really pleased SS did such amazing business (even without China), however to me its sad that it came so close to BvS's collections. I mean, the UE was leaps better than the cheesy film about not so bad guys apparently, saving the world from a really average villain (who wasnt a fit villain for suicide squad in the first place.) Plus the squad's chemistry with one another was off the charts. The film should've been grounded, rather than include magical elements (which would anyways be included in Dark Universe).
BvS was much much much better in comparison with great characterization and depth. I really hope DC Filmmakers actually realise where they have been wrong and not attempt to change things where they have been made to believe they are not.
