Zack Snyder explains why he cast Henry Cavill over Joe Manganiello as Superman (video)

With yesterday's news that Joe Manganiello will play Deathstroke in Ben Affleck's Batman movie I thought it would be fun to look back at some news that you may not be aware of.

Back in March of 2011, Zack Snyder spoke to MTV about his new movie Sucker Punch. This was just a couple of months after Henry Cavill had been announced as Superman for Man of Steel. But did you know that Joe Manganiello was close to landing the role? He was Snyder's second choice, and the director explained why he decided to go with Henry Cavill instead.

"Henry's just ... I love Joe too, by the way," Snyder said. "Really he was the only other guy I was thinking of, to be honest, other than Henry. But in the end, I think Henry just has this innocence too [in addition to the look and physicality required for the role], he has both, which is tricky," he explained. "Superman needs the teeniest bit of that. Not to be overt, but you like it to be there ever so slightly. I mean, he grew up in Kansas, that's just true, so you need a little of that [innocence]."

Joe doesn't have the Superman face at all. So glad he wasn't chosen. Joe works best as a villain. Henry was the best choice by far.

Btw, have you noticed how many people don't understand that it was Superman who inspired Batman to re-adopt his old ideals that he once abandoned after the only long term consequence of Batman being around was that Gotham is still infested and the Joker killed his partner Robin..., so it's Superman who saved/resurrected the Batman that was and reinvigorated Bruce with HOPE when Superman sacrificed himself (illustrated at the end of BVS by Bats not killing Luthor which he WOULD HAVE DONE earlier in the movie pre-Superman influence) . Am I alone on this one?

      It was supposed to be released during the week of Mother's Day if only a certain other film (that was actually rushed to compete with this) hadn't snuck into that same release date.

        If you're referring to kevin during the announcement of the next phase, yeah, that was a joke.
        But the russos later confirmed in an interview during promotion that cap 3 wasn't originally supposed to be cw and that they decided to do it because of BvS.
        Now I don't know if they'd eaten their words later on by calling it a joke just because it was being cited online too often. If they did, good for them.

        It was rushed to capitalize on the whole #ChooseYourTeam, #VersusMovie angle of things that BvS was quite sure to generate (and sure enough, it did). Was there any other reason for marvel to do it earlier than they originally intended to?
        This is obviously what I mean by rushed. You can proceed to try and put words in my mouth; I'll just spit them.

        Yeah, they must've been in quite a panic that they rushed—by which I mean they took 3 years to develop the movie and plan the rest of the films. It's not like marvel isn't known to churn out tailor-made drivel like clockwork every year. (You express your opinion on cw, I did mine on their franchise. Don't have a heart attack.)
        You're right. BvS isn't the climax of anything, just the beginning. And I'd opine it's put together much better.

        It can't violate logic when the Director can't even figure out how to tie in two characters. Gee,Superman is 35 and is just suddenly hearing about a guy dressed as a Bat that drives a super loud atomic Batmobile ..Did the Kent's never allow Clark to watch TV,listen to radio, or read newspapers? I guess he's just incredibly incurious AND stupid.

        Nowhere was it implied he didn't know of Batman's existence. The thing about urban legends is that you don't have a whole lot of details on them. The movie makes it abundantly clear Batman has been crossing the line only very recently and this is what has Clark concerned. He had to go to Gotham and talk to the citizens to understand it better and have a first-hand account—part of being a journalist.

        Yes, I always ask people to expound when I want to end a conversation. You're really great at observing things.
        You must've missed the rooftop scene with Lex and Superman because he pretty much spells out his motivations word by word. But then you are great at observing things so I must've just imagined it all.
        I get it. You needed a lot of spoon-feeding like tony stark saying 'Sometimes I want to punch your perfect teeth' instead of actually acting his emotions in that scene so that in the end it's, oh, so heartbreaking when they fight it out.
        Wonder Woman was there to hint at a much larger world and the expansiveness the movie establishes. You can't really comment on Wonder Woman's monochrome photo and as unbelievable as it may seem, the point of having a shared-universe is to share characters.
        Lex creates the deformity as Superman's doomsday and that's literally what it becomes.
        If you know anything about Superman, he isn't the kind of guy to ask someone else to do what he has (right then) fully embraced as his purpose—to not just help humans around but to accept them for who they are. Being as observant as you are, you must've known Wonder Woman wasn't as invulnerable as Superman since she had to use a magical shield against Doomsday's energy blasts. For the sake of argument, let's say Superman did give WW the spear and did ask her to stab it. What if Doomsday takes out WW with it? Who'd be to blame for her death? Superman had no idea of WW's strengths or weaknesses and didn't quite have the time to ask her. "This 'thing' is from another world. My world." He saw an opportunity to end it all and he did, which is the most Superman thing to do.
        It's fine though. Justice League will be slowed way down so people on various points on the autistic spectrum can catch up.

        These people have three common tactics:
        A) Argument defeated? Plug ears, evade, and repeat defeated argument in other comments sections.
        B) Completely bend the conversation out of recognition (or build straw men) until you're too confused by this or annoyed about setting the topic back on track for the umpteenth time to waste your energy replying anymore.
        C) Spend the whole time being self-righteous and insulting, but cry 'bully!' when you fire back.
        You did what you could.
        They're not only manipulative of arguments, but I suspect also manipulative of their own minds. The behavior seems almost like a defense mechanism to prevent them from feeling wrong on the internet. Logic cannot penetrate that bubble.

        That's a very well-put description of these concern-trolls. In the end it's clear they enjoy doing this but I keep mistaking some of them for people who could maybe have a few insights and they'd maybe enjoy the movie. I'm almost always wrong!
        "... this argument can go nowhere good..." I guess by that they mean it can't go somewhere where they could pat on their own backs and say they were right. So off they go to the next unsuspecting commenter.

    I love it when I see other people who actually got this scene and why it is such a powerful scene... But the general audience thinks it is all because their mothers share their names... Maybe it is because they don't understand Batman's character, or more like thetñy only see him as a one dimensional hero.

        I totally get it, it's annoying as all hell. I don't mind disagreeing, in fact that's what's fun about film (with the right people) is hearing others perspectives, but if you're going to argue against a stance, do the following: 1) stay on point, 2) accurately acknowledge the points that have been brought up by the other party (e.g. you and me referring to Supes death as the catalyst for Bats redemption), 3) be open to changing your mind if legitimate/intriguing evidence or perspective is presented, or flat out admit you're wrong if it's an objective thing, and 4) don't be a prick lol

        Yeah that's been my observation as well unfortunately. I feel like a lot of comic book fans who are passionate about what THEY consider the Holy Grail of comics (whatever that HG is) generally don't give this movie a shot b/c they are pissed from the start that certain things are different than the source material that they are respectively passionate for. Examples: Batman killing, Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, Superman not being the Superman we're used to from comics (that we're going to get in Justice League b/c he's gotta go through CHARACTER ARCS before he gets there, etc.) I feel if those who are passionately against this movie b/c of their own source material passion stepped back and tried to appreciate what they were going for in this movie, they might appreciate it more, especially b/c Supes/Bats character arcs actually make sense. That being said, if the kind of person I'm talking about gave it a shot and still didn't like it, that's fine, but I just don't think a lot of those people are giving it a shot in the first place. And sometimes people are just assholes b/c they got nothing better to do haha

        I agree 100%. I used to hate MoS because of how different Superman was in that film. After years of letting my hatred go and seeing BvS, I watched the film again and enjoyed what they had done.

        The argument is valid, I'll explain... Batman's redemption comes from AFTER Supes sacrifices himself to kill Doomsday. The next time we see Bats is when he's choosing NOT to torture and kill Lex Luthor, something he would have done prior to Superman's influence and inspiration, so him choosing NOT to torture/kill Lex shows the completion of the character arc and that Bats has re-adopted his original ideals of NOT killing (which is reinforced by Geoff John's comments in his most recent WSJ interview). I can appreciate if this wasn't the direction you'd prefer them to go down, all film is subjective and you're not the only one who might feel this way, but the DEVELOPMENT/EXECUTION of Batman's character arc makes complete sense and is logically sound in BvS.

        He shoots the gas tank. KG Beast killed himself by firing the flamethrower anyway, because KGB is stubborn and angry.
        Also, as has been spelled out countless times, Bruce's redemption, like any change of heart in real life, comes through a period of reflection, not instantaneously.
        He declares it at Clark's funeral, after he sees him sacrifice himself to save the world and stop Doomsday, and we see him exercise it by choosing not to brand Lex despite his rage. We will see it grow on in to Justice League.

      Check out Geoff John's interview with the WSJ that just came out where he says,"Justice League will also directly address Batman’s extreme actions in the last movie, such as torturing criminals and nearly killing the man of steel, rather than accept them as par for the course." The reason it's not "par for the course" and that they'll be addressing it is because Batman USED TO NOT KILL, and after BVS he won't be killing again because he's re-adopted his original ideals after being inspired by the Man of Steel sacrificing himself to kill Doomsday. This is illustrated when Bats doesn't kill Lex Luthor in his jail cell, it just makes logical sense.

    visuals are in-your-face stylish but his stories are often full of intricate undertones. His films are treated like hot blondes; look really pretty, thus presumed to be dumb. Like Nolan also mentioned, what he's doing with the CBM genre is a few years too soon. Too bad WB will most likely nerf him to appease the critics(which won't work anyway)

cant imagine a better fit for superman than Henry Cavill. Joe would make a good black adam, I think Dwayne Johnson should be Lobo instead of Black Adam, he can pull of the more outlandish character that is lobo. Also I think the old dude from "Dont Breathe"(Stephen Lang i think is the name) would have been a better Deathstroke...but i guess its too late for all that talk and who cares what i think

  I think a Deathstroke that's more around the same age as Batman rather than 10-15 years older and in his late 50s-60s, is the better choice. Someone who's at the same peak physicality as Bruce who could operate as a sort of mirror image to his combat style rather than a tired assassin who could slip up in combat due to advanced years against a still fairly prime conditioned Batman.

    Well Deathstroke doesn't really age that much, even if he was around 60+ years he would still look young, what makes him look oldish is his white hair and beard... He is after all an augmented human being.

  Agree. Cavill embodies Superman. He's just been given a fairly serious narrative arc thus far, but we saw a hint at what his Superman may very well be in future movies when he smiled at Lois in BvS and told her she was his world and that Earth was too.

      Cause in that part of the film the dialogue although kind of cheesy worked perfectly, his change of feeling like an outcast on earth, and saying his world didn't exist anymore, to adopting earth as his world and all that, plus the fantastic music by Zimmer, god dammit I almost cried at that point.

I totally get what Zac means. Henry does have the look of innocents along with the hulking presence side. Joe does not have that. I've always thought Joe would make a good Batman so he is perfect for someone like deathstroke, he can defo get that dark brooding presense.

Henry IS Superman, i cannot see anybody else, he has the charm, he looks like Superdopely manly in those tights, that's a hard one, he was Superman even before the DCEU (bad casting for a bad film stopped him, luckily)

  Just look at him. The emotions of the character are practically carved into the angles of his face and his mannerisms.
  We need both strong and gentle, and Henry naturally captures the perfect balance. I feel like Joe doesn't.

Manganiello looks too rough, which is why he's better as a villain. Cavill's pretty boy looks work in his favor because you have an easier time believing he'd be the good guy. It's a pity, though, that the script and direction were lacking. Synder can't direct actors to save his life, probably cause he's more interesting in crafting stunning visuals. I guess that's what happens when your background is in music videos. And Goyer's a hack who really shouldn't be allowed to write comic book characters period. Cavill deserved better. He could've been a great Superman had he been given better material and a real director. The worst part is that they later hired a talented director, one who can get good performances out of actors. Only they didn't hire him as a director. They hired him to play Batman. I can only wonder how much better Man of Steel would've turned out had Affleck directed it instead of Hack Synder.

Coming from a guy who films acting as if it's a "Wet Paint" sign, the guy could have filmed Billy Barty as Superman and would somehow still make it beyond boring.
