'Suicide Squad' sets new box office record, beats 'Captain America: Civil War' and 'Batman v Superman'

Suicide Squad keeps breaking box office records, despite getting slammed by critics. Last weekend it set the record for biggest August opening of all-time, and now it set a new record and beat this year's biggest superhero movies!

Suicide Squad made $14.27 million in North America during its first Tuesday (5 days after its release), a record for August which was previously held by Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ($11.9 million). But here's where it gets really interesting...

Suicide Squad's $14.27 million first Tuesday box office revenue is bigger than Captain America: Civil War's at $13.76 million, Avengers: Age of Ultron's $13.1 million, and even Batman v Superman's $12.7 million first Tuesday numbers.

The movie came out in the summer instead of the spring, but that's still kind of crazy! It just goes to show that audiences are really enjoying Suicide Squad and are having a lot of fun with it.

        As a Chicano El Diablo was a wonderful and familiar representation of my community. I'm sure there are some who were not fans, but I was, and really enjoyed the depth and respect his character was given. I had never heard of him before the movie, and now I'm a fan.

        Well, you are being a hypocrite, it really isn't an insult. It's an observation. Secondly, all this "hatred" towards dc movies is something that fanboys use as an excuse. You have literally no proof of this besides the last two dceu movies getting bad reviews. And that's not proof, that's simply because they were not up to par and suffered from over hype, which is definitely the movies' fault too (being marketed as something they end up not being). Ya'll force yourselves to beloeve in this, rather than present proof, and then just say "dc is hated by critics" without presenting arguments, logic or reason. After all these replies, you are yet to present these things.

        Really? He defended MoS all day? A couple months ago he said Superman (right after he saves Lois from the pod and puts her on the ground) was in another country when he heard Zod confronting Martha in Smallville and flew all the way. He probably didn't notice Lois hitching a ride and arriving at the Kent Farm several minutes later. I wonder what he defended since he now calls it (MoS) something he enjoyed but still a shit-movie.

      Well, just saying from experience with BvS, I have talked with a lot of people who were saying they wouldn't go and watch it because of the poor rating.
      So, it showed in terms of not reaching even 900M.
      So I imagine, it would be similar with this movie... although, SS is not as divisive as BvS was, considering that a lot of people actually have positive opinion on the movie.
      Funny thing with people who didn't watched BvS in theater because of the critics, when they rented it, most of them kinda liked it...

        It was OK. very predictable, but well directed. The difference between SSs and STBs CGI was a whole different league. Unlike SSs , STBs was very well directed and organised but the ending is something I have seen a hundred times in Star Trek films.

      There's a reason that David Ayer DIDN'T want a full CG character in the SS and chose Killer Croc over King Shark.
      His CG team is much more about nice raw effects, rather than putting immense detail.

  I showed up for opening weekend, and would've showed up 4 more times like Man of Steel if the film was actually good. Same with BvS if they released the Ultimate Cut in theaters instead of that mess. Hype will always show in opening weekends, and Suicide Squad was full of it, but subsequent weekends can also make or break a film and can be very indicative of the reception of the film.

      Well for one, the editing was atrocious, I can never actually enjoy a scene since it would immediately jump into another. And second, at least half of Clarks scenes were cut or shortened. That Capitol building scene hit me so much harder and loved seeing Clark in Gotham, slowly getting a sense of what the streets say about Batman. The Africa scene was so much better explained. I still have problems with the film but that extra thirty minutes really added to my enjoyment of the film.

  Would have LOVED those add-ons. I imagine they thought Joker/Harley would take away from the squad themselves. Deadshot is always meant to be the emotional leader of the team, so focusing on him should naturally come first. BUT, the dork in me wanted more of the Harley/Joker interaction.

        Firstly, what's the source of this guy? Thin air?
        Let me guess, his sources for this so-called ORIGINAL CUT are that Hollywood reporter article with its impeccable timing, the set videos/photos (this guy just mentions just as much as we saw in the set videos), and pretty much all the deleted scenes you could pull from the trailers and TV spots.
        Problems with this video:
        1. He says the movie opens with Amanda at the restaurant listing out the Squad but David confirmed that was only added when the audience at a test-screening were too disoriented after a viewing of the 'actual' original cut. He called it the 'dossier' version which the video claims was in the original cut.
        2. This guy just added a bloody scene to make it seem darker. If the Joker kills Griggs, who the hell (with clearance) would be slipping Harley the cellphone? The whole point of that scene was to explain this plot-beat. Jealous-Joker plays out during the Monster T scene. The official novelization mentions Joker killed about 7 guys who eyeballed Harley and he blames her for it. There's obviously never a bloodying Joker.
        3. Back to the burning building bullshit, there's one mention of Robin in the novelization:
        Batman glowered at her. "Joker took something important away from me," he growled. "It's my turn."
        Harley didn't reply but she shivered.
        There's obviously never a Batman holding Robin's dead-body scene (because they're gonna leave it to Ben Affleck to depict it).
        An observant kid could make out the rest of it from the trailers or by simply reading the novelization, which I recommend if you want to delve deeper into the (back)story.

        I'm saying this definitely-fake cut is more flimsily constructed than the crits are making out the actual movie to be.
        In fact if that iconic shot of Robin's dead-body was in the movie, people (general audience) would've called it the Knightmare sequence—by which I mean something they couldn't connect immediately—of Suicide Squad.

        If they show a dead Robin and Joker killing him and lights the building on fire then Batman comes and beats the teeth out of Joker. How would the general audience not get that? The knightmare scene didnt have anything to do with the movie but this would explain Jokers character, give him a "im gonna make this pen disapear" scene, show how he got his new teeth and it would explain a crucial entry of Batmans past and possibly the reason he started killing.

        All that sounds great but don't you think it'd be way too out of place in a Suicide Squad movie?
        I mean, this sounds just like the thing people would complain about if it was in the movie. "Oh, I thought the movie was called Suicide Squad, not A Front for the Joker and Batman to Share Screen-time Again."
        The pencil-scene was vital to the Dark Knight because the Joker was the antagonist of that movie. SS is just a sneak peak to the Jared Joker. And Batfleck didn't disregard life because of Robin's death but I imagine he was almost pushed to that edge and his psyche most definitely cracked. Just think of the part in Hush where he almost kills the Joker but here Batfleck bashes his teeth in right before he stops. When you're pushed that far, you don't just come back immediately and before he could, Superman happened. Joker was the beginning of Batman's disregard to life and Superman just hit the switch in MoS and BvS, he never straight out kills, provided he was pretty f*cked up in BvS.
        (You might not appreciate it but this is how the Silver Age Batman, the Batman that was the most Batman visually with the culmination of all his bat-gadgets, also carried a gun. This was later rectified because of superhero-image the CB-readers derived from Superman, much like how Superman is influencing Batfleck's journey now. This, to me, is showing immense respect to the source material.)
        I disagree the Knightmare sequence didn't add to BvS.
        What you mentioned would be a great scene but it belongs more in a Batman movie and I do believe we'll see it soon. There will be a burning building, it just isn't the Wayne Manor. I have an idea which one thanks to a clue in BvS.
        The general audience needs a formal introduction to the Robin before they see his death. I was baffled that so many people couldn't get the Robin's costume with Joker's graffiti on it.

        Joker was never a major character in the movie. He was primarily a part of Harley's backstory and that backstory leading into the present. He might be huge to the audience but not to the movie.
        What's Robin's death got to do with Harley?
        That maybe so but anyone who expected the Joker to be the villain was not paying attention. It was clear Enchantress was it, even before the third trailer hit the inter-webs.
        "Then why did they use Joker so intensively for promotion?" Did they? There was the laugh which only promises he's in the movie not the villain, and maybe a shot or two.
        The Joker's obviously the promotional red herring and a head-turner here.

Movie critics, and the people who determine what American films get released in China, be like... "F*ck the DCEU, Hail Hydra"! I think any comic book fan who claims to have not enjoyed Suicide Squad overall, might be lying to themselves, and they're definitely in the minority.

    I also say "fuck the critics" SLAMMING both this and BvS. I've re-watched BvS several times now & am loving it more and more over time. Suicide Squad was good too - I just need to give it another watch to get my thoughts straight on it. Superb cast & overall good experience at the movies.
    To completely bash the movie though seems incredibly over the top. It's a good movie! Better than most blockbuster movies they salivate over.

      Is it? It has characters that I love which makes me like it more than I should, but apart from Deadshot's character and some moments here and there, it's quite generic and dumb. A lot of noise, very very little substance. Quite possibly the most watered down movie of Ayer's career, and he has some very weak efforts.

        Still better to have only a "few generic or watered moments" than having a complete generic movie again (Civil War) and call it a "masterpiece"...just pointing double standard from critics, i like both Marvel and DC, don’t hit me.

        Masterpiece? It has a 75 or something like that on metacritic. It isn't even the best rated mcu film. Is it just black and white with you? A movie can be good, not great. That's what Civil War was as the consensus for critics. Also, Suicide Squad as a whole is watered down with barely any substance, not just a few moments.

        Who called Civil War a masterpiece? It was good, but not on par with most of Nolan's films. Civil War was exactly what it intended to be; an adventure movie.

        I can still remember the Civil War tv spots with critic reviews: "Masterpiece", "This is how a blockbuster should be", etc etc....from the same "critics"who then destroyed BvS, not saying that they cannot have their own opinion, its just too much adulation against too much denigration, using basically the same arguments, it shows...

        Just like Deadpool was and no one batted an eye. Don't judge me wrongly, I had a blast with Deadpool, but, basically, it had a very simple story and, yes, more noise than substance. But hey, I don't mind because I had a great time just like I did with Suicide Squad so there's that

        Sure, but deadpool knew what it was, and it was done really well. Simple, yet effective. Ithas a lot more character driven momenta than suicide squad does, and it works. Suicide Squad needed more, and it went the dumbest way possible about it.

      honestly, the part of the movie I was looking forward to was the "bye bye" scene. At the start when we realize all the jokers scenes were reduced to clips and, you start to notice all the stuff missing from the trailers you were looking forward to, it really affected me. Going to check it out again knowing what the movie is not and see if I can enjoy it for what it is.

  I am with you about letting others dictate what you should or shouldn't want to see. You lost me with the rest. Does that mean any comic book fan who claims not to have enjoyed him/herself overall with any comic book movie is lying to themselves or just Suicide Squad? If just Suicide Squad, who makes that the line in the sand? Why is that the case? You've already set the standard for me to dislike the movie when I get to see it just by telling me that.
  And "in the minority" is still open to debate.

    Again nobody is arguing on the success. Twilight and Transformers were also critically panned properties that made tons of money. Super. No need to jump to defense on how good or bad the movie is.
    If you love the movie, great! I don't think anybody's passion for a movie should ever be taken away. If people love Twilight, great! If people love Pirates of the Caribbean, great! Captain America, great!
    The problem I had was when an article is claimed in big bold letters "Suicide Squad sets new box office record, beats Batman vs. Superman and Civil War." This is a bit misleading after the article is read. It's obviously creating a narrative to boost up Suicide Squad's success to rival other franchises to excite or help the defense of fans. When you look within the entire context of the box office numbers, it's simply not true.
    The article is based on passion swayed by fans' enthusiasm rather then the full box office report.

Aside from all the story and Joker complaints, I really hope we get the "he's a crocodile he eats people" and "I'll have a water" jokes. They even cut the funniest jokes (imho).

Of course haters will still dismiss this, trolls will keep having their field-day, and critics will keep comparing apples to oranges.
Label Suicide Squad's quality anything you want, but as of today: Suicide Squad has made $295 Million on a $175 Million budget, and it's still WINNING in spite of it being a "dumpster fire" claimed by these so called "critics."

It goes to show that flaws and all, there are more DC fans in general, and people rooting for the franchise to work. If they're already doing this well in spite of such scathing reviews, imagine how big the market is going to be if they actually managed to get one that was not critically panned? :P To add to that, even the haters have to admit DC has been pretty spot on in their casting choices (other than Jesse's Lex, even though he did please a number of people). The potential to make an absolutely box-office crushing movie is pretty high, given the right script and director.

It's great news for the movie, but just to put this into context, so people don't blow it out of proportion, Finding Dory's second tuesday made more than this. It's summer, and especially august, where most people go on vacation. Given the movie's massive opening weekend, it was bound to make a ton on week days.

Good news on this, but unless Suicide Squad opens in a lot more countries than it is in now, it will not do well internationally, and will definitely not cross 650 Million, let alone 750-800 Million worldwide to break even. Unless the film miraculously does not have nearly as much as a drop the next weekend as Batman v Superman did, AND opens well in more countries.
In order for Suicide Squad to even be considered a success in my eyes, it would have to make 295 Million domestic AT THE VERY LEAST. It cost 175 Million to make, and around 120 Million to Market (not sure the exact number). If it doesn't open in any more countries than it does now, that would be a little over 590 Million internationally. And if my calculations are correct, it would have to have a far smaller drop next weekend than BvS to even achieve this. Fingers crossed!

    It was enjoyable, sure, but it does need to do well at the Box Office to at least solidify the next few DCEU Films after WW and JL. I fear Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, JL2, and (worst of all) Ben Affleck's Solo Batman Film all have a chance of being cancelled if Suicide Squad does worse than Batman v Superman at the Box Office proportionally. I'll gladly see SS again (maybe leave for the bathroom during the Enchantress scenes), but I just don't know how well it will do at the Box Office.
    Also, Batman v Superman should have made 415 million domestically in order to be considered a financial success (it had a far higher production and marketing budget than SS). Worldwide, that's slightly less than 1.1 Billion (if you use the same statistics as it does in real life). How well did it make? 330 million domestic, 872 million worldwide. That's definitely not a bomb, but it's not a very good success either.

      You worry to much about money. Batman and the Justice League aren't going anywhere. There have been 8 Batman movies in my life time and Batman just had a cameo in Suicide Squad. I like the current iteration of the DC universe, but if they need to stop and reboot it, that's cool too.
      There will always be DC Comics movies... or whatever medium replaces movies in 60 years.

        I don't want a reboot though. The cast in all three films so far has been amazing, with a few exceptions like Jesse Eisenberg as Lex (he'd make a perfect Riddler though), and the ideas behind most of the scenes in these films are very good. It's the execution that kind of ruins it. Case of point being the Martha scene. The execution made it seem like Batman stopped attacking Superman only because of the "same name," however, on paper it seems that the sheer fact that Superman HAD a mother on earth made Batman see Superman at eye level. Also every idea involving Lex and/or Enchantress is good and (though not 100% accurate to the comics) believable; however the execution needs to be better in order for it to work.
        My point is, I want the DCEU to continue, but I fear it won't. I am beyond hyped for Ben Affleck's self-directed solo film. If it's cancelled, all hope will be lost for me.
        That's why I care about it succeeding at the Box Office. I'm trying to think like the greedy studio that is WB.

This article is a bit misleading. While it did have a bigger Tuesday gross than Civil War and Batman vs. Superman (and only 700k more than Civil War's Tuesday gross) Civil War was already at 206 million and Batman vs. Superman was at 191 million by Tuesday. Suicide Squad is at 161 million.
The movie is doing well but writing an article claiming it "beat" the other two movies is false as it is actually trailing.

    Yes this is correct but it's a mountain out of a mole hill article. Semi click bait trying to boost the success of the movie. When looking at the full box office report, Suicide Squad's Tuesday's gross is not very significant which makes this article sort of arbitrary.

      How is it not significant? It made more than BvS and CW on the Tuesday after opening. Even from your perspective you should see that the drop off is significantly less.
      The public doesn't know who the Suicide Squad is and it got trashed by critics. These are big numbers no matter how you look at it.

        Nobody is arguing that it is not doing well. It is doing very well. But that's not what the article is advertising. The article is hinting that it is "beating" Civil War and Batman Vs. Superman. This is much different than being a financial success. It only made 700k more than Civil War did on a Tuesday. That's not really news worthy.
        Again, Batman vs Superman and Civil War were farther ahead in box office in total gross by this point. The article leaves this out. It would change the narrative of it was included.
        I would also argue that the Joker was a huge marketing strategy as he was one that is well known. They even threw Batman in a few advertisements.

        It made more on a Tuesday than those other films at the same respective point in their release cycle. But it's kind of a meaningless statistic because those other movies had already made more money up to that point, prior to Tuesday. So it could be about any day of the week and it doesn't account for much since it's one day and doesn't make up for it having less money in total, even after Tuesday's record setting number. It'd be like if Suicide squad made the most money ever on a Thursday afternoon between the hours of 12-4 pm. It looks nice on paper but doesn't really mean anything substantial.

      It's clear to me. This is a fan site and we celebrate victories like this for the movies we like. If you want to talk about click bait articles, search the web for Suicide Squad reviews. Further, take a look at how pissed off sites are now and how they can't help to add hyperbole to their stories. They "report" on the BO success because it gets more clicks but can't stand to add their shade. It's insulting to the fans of this movie- as if we're stupid for liking the movie. I love the success the movie has earned and spin it how you want, but this is absolutely a success for the movie and the DCEU.
