It was a rough week for Suicide Squad director David Ayer and the cast, who had to talk about the bad reviews from critics at the UK premiere and during interviews. But despite all that negativity, fans flocked to the theater to check out the movie, making it the biggest August opening of all time.

Before the official numbers were released on Sunday, David Ayer took to Twitter to thank fans for all of their support.

Thank you thank you thank you! To the folks making @SuicideSquadWB a success this weekend. It's just a fun Summer movie with a good heart.

That's how I described the movie in my brief Twitter reactions right after I saw it. Suicide Squad isn't trying to be anything other than a fun popcorn summer movie. You're not going to get a deep Christopher Nolan superhero movie story here. It's not even as complex as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It's just 2 hours of fun entertainment. And that's not a bad thing!

Can't really compare #SuicideSquad to #BatmanvSuperman because they are so different. SS is 2 hours of popcorn movie fun for the summer!

  Yeah, this movie had the potential to be one of the great ones, I can tell certain scenes where it was all Ayer and those scenes were spectacular, which left me wondering how great this movie could have been if WB executives did not get involved. I think it would have been the perfect balance between fun and a good plot, which would have made it amazing. Anyways, glad it broke records, each DCEU movie has been doing big in the box office, so I am sure the WB executives are happy.

  Sadly a 3 hour film isn't a "Fun Summer Film"
  Can't blame them for trying to please people this time around by making a nice summer flick that has a lot of solid stuff from the source material.
  Jared Letos Joker would've probably been a lot of dark scenes(I do want an SS Joker Edition more than anything) like showing the abusive side of Harley/Joker. I've got chicks and my mom even telling me how much they loved the Harley Joker relationship.... Would've been TOTALLY different if they showed him beating the shit out of her.

  Very happy for Ayer, watching the behind the scenes stuff on the Fury blu ray really gave me an appreciation for what he does. I appreciate what he did with Suicide Squad and will definitely add it to my blu ray collection when it's released.

Fun movies can have substance though, which I *hate* to say, but at least Marvel can balance this occasionally. I don't believe David Ayer has ever planned on releasing "just a fun summer movie" in his career. Sounds like he's trying to make himself feel better.

  Doctor Strange is probably the only Marvel movie that I think may have substance and funny stuff well balanced. IMO all the other Marvel movies to date have been shallow and superficial fun stuff, which is not bad, but I didn't felt any substance.

        The "Maybe he's just a guy trying to do the right thing" scene has more substance than the entire Civil War film. And the truth is that that scene is only an explicit development of a part of what the film develops implicitly.

I'm happy for him and hope to see at least Harley and Joker in the Batman movie, especially if it takes in Arkham Asylum. I love all three of the DCEU movies, I want more!!

Saw it yesterday. I had the biggest smile on my face in the first half of the movie with music and characters and colorful visuals then it turned into a dull walk down a street shooting at generic enemy that just pop and never ending cheesy one liners. Boomerang was only there so we could see the flash, which was cool but that was about all he was there for. Croc, wtf was the point of the croc? To throw C4? Diablos stupid sob story was just so stupid. Katana?? What??? Why?? Slipknot? WHY!!!!
Harley was awesome, Deadshot was cool, Joker was great, Waller was fantastic but man what a let down this movie was. Its like you can pick the spot in this movie when BvS got trashed by critics and everything just goes to shit. What an awful villain. Damn it to hell WHAT HAPPENED!!!!

  "What an awful villain." I did not see enchantress as the villain. To me, Waller was the Villain. And I love the idea of her being a villain. Notice that in the end-credits scene she had files on all metahumans, not just bad guys (she had The Flash, Aquaman, etc.), so she could have formed a Justice League, made from trustworthy people. Rather than doing that, she pulled in a bunch of bad guys and put bombs in their necks so she could have ultimate control. I think that's pretty villainous and pretty cool.
  And about Slipknot, I think every Suicide Squad story needs to have a throw away character to be killed off early on to prove a point.

    This was supposed to be the most over the top COMIC BOOKY movie of them all. For fucks sake theres a glowing purple lambo!!! Bats punched harley in the face!! Music was pumping and colors splashing all over the screen and then all of the sudden nothing. Everything went flat and we resorted to bullshit marvel one line zingers and a lame duck villain. This movie was just OK at best. I don't want just OK from DC movies. OK is what marvel has been shitting out lately for the most part.
    Im gonna do another IMAX viewing thats how much I enjoyed the first half but FUCK WHAT A LET DOWN!!

      I'm sorry we don't see eye-to-eye. I've always seen Waller as a villain. She knew perfectly well that what happened with Entrantress was a possibility, so it is ultimately her fault. I know these characters very well. I think Waller was portrayed very well. You don't have to try to destroy the world to be a villain.

She's trying to stop what she and the government deemed to be a threat, the metas, by any means necessary. She's just as much suicide squad as the suicide squad themselves. Waller's actions and motives are always gray just like the rest of the squad. She operates in a gray area. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, never evil. You can't say that about enchantress. This is like you telling me you didn't like BvS because superman's cape was green... Superman's cape was NOT green, waller was NOT the villain. Its not a matter of opinion, its fact.

        She's definitely a villain. Everything she did was to further her own agenda and also to cover her mistakes. She clearly isn't the physical villain, but she is definitely a villain of the suicide squad, none the less. She had bombs implanted into their necks. None of them would be in this dangerous situation if she didn't unwillingly force them into it. She put bullets in the FBI agents that were with her in the hide out, just because they didn't have "clearance." Those are pretty villainous acts. Even in that scene deadshot says, "and I'm the bad guy..."
        The whole big action set piece was whatever, really just there to push the squad into action. It could have been a better mission, no doubt, but in all honesty the challenge of these villains proving Waller and Flagg wrong, that no matter what terrible things these people have done, they can still be human beings and do something right. That was the real story of this movie.

        Uhm, you are definitely missing his point. The main Villain of the movie itself is not waller but enchantress. Waller might have been evil and controlling suicide squad, but she isn't the villain of the story. It was enchantress. She is controlling and always want to have the power to be able to control situations. She also has a lot of agenda sure, but it isn't against the people of earth, her agenda be it get more power or control is for the people and government so no, she isn't a villain. The Villain in suicide squad was enchantress not waller.

        I'm not missing the point. I know enchantress in the main villain, but Waller is a villain also. Enchantress and her faceless army and underdeveloped brother are just a device to force the protagonists into action. This movie is from the villains point of view, and to them, Waller is a villain. I never said she was THE villain, just another villain to the squad.
        Enchantress means nothing to the characters on the squad, except Flagg. They don't even know she exists until the third act of the film. They are constantly in conflict with Waller through the entire film. Another reason why she can be considered a villain to the squad.

It's one or the other, and in this film's case the issues started while filming. The biggest WB blunder in this movie's case was probably hiring Ayer as the director.

I'm not even sure that Suicide Squad making coin at the box office is a good thing.It shows that this sort of disposable and toothless type of movie does the job and it might be the go-to approach for WB when it comes to the rest of the DCEU lineup.
Making the villains likeable will only hurt them in future solo Flash,Batman and Superman movies,because you won't buy them as that bad,so their credibility gets shot down.
In no way Suicide Squad should have been just a fun summer popcorn movie.It should have turned the genre on its head with the characterizations and morality or lack of.These were supposed to be criminals you didn't root for,but find fascinating because they're different from the heroes.It was a massive opportunity that was not exploited to its full potential because of the backlash BvS received.

    It depends on what likeable means to people.Hannibal Lecter,for example,is charming and intelligent,which make him one of the most loved villains in cinema.
    The difference between that type of likeable and the one shown in SS is that they were desperately trying to make these characters antiheroes and fun so they can push merchandise with their names on it.
    Since it's got a PG-13 rating and it wears it on its sleeve,it interferes with proper character development and doing justice to the characters.
    Let's take Boomerang,for example.In the comics he's a misogynist and a racist,but in the movie he's a hobo aussie with a fetish for pink plush unicorns that's being used as humor relief.Which one is more interesting to watch as a character and which one will sell merchandise and keep the SJWs or feminists at bay?
    If this movie would have had a smaller budget,I can guarantee it would have been infinitely better because they could have focused on the story and not pandering to kids,SJWs,feminists or thinking so much about selling toys.

      I agree that it should have been a bit edgier. Like you said, though, they never would have gotten that of-13 rating. I think it originally was a bit more deep in the other characters, but I felt that in a movie with 9 of them, we could only get a taste of it anyway. It reminded me of the first expendables movie. We might not have really needed every character to further the plot, but it expands the world of dc quickly and efficiently. Now we can see these characters in other films where they get more use and we already are familiar with some of their stories.
      I really had fun with this movie. If it would have kept about 15 more minutes of joker/argus/enchantress story, it wouldn't be getting the bashing it is. Those scenes would make it a lot smoother from an editorial and plot stand point. But I will say after my second screening, the movie flows so much better. Third act is still a mess of the last fight, but so much fun still.

  But almost all of flashes rogue gallery are actually pretty likable characters. Capt. Cold, Capt Boomerang, the trickster, mirror master, etc. Same thing with some of batmans rogues, like deadshot, death stroke, the joker, Harley Quinn, or catwoman. Those are all villains with huge fan bases. That's what makes them so interesting. Just because someone does bad things doesn't mean that they can't be likable. Bad people tend to be pretty charming and persuasive.

    Like I said before,in SS comics Boomerang is a misogynist and a racist.Deadshot is looking to die a good death,so he's kind of suicidal and as for the crazy couple,Joker physically abuses Harley and she keeps coming back to him because she's crazy.
    There was interesting exploration that could have been done with these characters,but we didn't get it because of the PG-13 rating and lack of ambition.

Hopefully there is a major drop off this weekend. I thought this movie was dreadful and had the utmost potential. If the trailers and talent are going to be great, only to be let down because the studio makes poor decisions in post production, than I'd rather not have a DC Universe.

  No, he's not. This was just a way to introduce a new joker. It kind of eases you into the idea of someone else playing the character than a whole movie right away. They could have pushed to add a few more scenes with him, maybe like 3-5 minutes, but I think it still works, and they were probably too dark for a pg-13 movie anyway. A lot of the issues come from it not being r rated and trying to keep the run time down.

I loved it. I don't care what critics say or Jared for that matter. What actor would be happy about a lot of his or her scenes cut out?. It's not the first time I've seen a actor complain about it. He'll have plenty of screen time in the other movies. It's bad enough to have the critics (whom I've never listened to) but to have a actor from the movie saying that it could be better,maybe he should look what happened to Garfield when he complained about the Spider-Man 2 movie.

I'll never understand why people use "it's summer" as an excuse to to release a pointless and lazy attempt at a proper movie. I don't care whose fault it is... Ayer's, WB's, whoever... But this film is clearly salvaged, not ending up the way it was written or even shot, which makes it hard to enjoy. You can have a delicious steak dinner in front of you, but if you throw it in a blender, it's ruined. It's still made of the same stuff and tastes similar, but it's not what it was conceived to be.

Just saw it last night, and I thought it was two hours of simple, fun, comic book action. It was great seeing those characters come alive (I think everyone did a great job), and I'm hoping to see them more in the future. Maybe the squad will turn up in Batman's solo movie with Harley and Joker being the main villains? I hope Captain Boomerang shows up in The Flash.
I did notice some of the faults that have been mentioned (some cheesy dialogue, editing was really wonky), but it did the job for me. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
Thank YOU, cast and crew! You did the best you could, and it turned out just fine for me.

  I definitely think we'll be seeing deadshot (as he says he's got some unfinished business in Gotham), HQ and Joker in the Batman film ( as the joker said it's time to go home). I literally can't wait for the Batman solo film.

I wish they would have know this was the movie they wanted from the start. They start making a Joker/Harley dark demented rated r epic, and end up with a disjointed "fun"summer movie. Problem is they didnt have the elements for a fun summer movie, so they had to fake it with weird graphics and shitty tunes. If they didnt change mid-stream I think I could like this type of movie from DC. But not only did I not get what I wanted, I know somewhere in the WB vaults is the movie I want. I hope they get their "summer fun" theatre money and then give us the real movie. Which one is going to be cannon though?

    While an extended cut would improve the movie,it wouldn't be by a big margin since there's nothing that can be done regarding the mediocre action scenes and the villain,especially the weak 3rd act.
    This movie probably had the worst action scenes I've seen in the past 3 years considering the movies that took it to a whole new level of awesomeness in that amount of time.

      I just want more of the Joker/Harley stuff. The Deadshot gun battle was amazing though IMO. People cheered in my screening. But I agree, the faceless minions were kind of generic.

        That's the only good action scene in the movie and he's just standing there while blowing blob soldiers up.Another one that stood out in a sea of mediocrity was the elevator fight,but again,it wasn't great.
        The scenes were shot up close and with fast editing,making you not understand what's going on.The final boss fight takes the cake,though.Why did they think that filming the scene in a fog where you mainly see silhouettes being thrown left and right by Enchantress would be interesting or fun to watch?
        By the way,those blob soldiers reminded me of the putty foot soldiers from Power Rangers.Sooo baaad! But I get the reason they went with them.In PG-13 movies you can't show blood,but if it's a different color,you're good.
        It was their compromise so they could show the squad hacking and slashing something .

i still can't get over the "you messed with my friends!" line from Harley, I just can't believe they would add such a corny line. Anyways, give us the ultimate cut and then thank us because many die hard DC fans are not happy with you Ayer.

  Only gripe I have is that I wish there was more Joker. It seems like they changed the tone through editing and it kind of stinks that there's another version out there we will probably never see.

      GOTG is one of my favorite Marvel movies despite that asshattery however I still will take this cut of SS over any MCU film. Not that they're not at the very least, 'good', but it's hard to support the MCU when they get free passes on the same things DC gets scolded about. I will concede that WB needs to let director's make their movies though.

        Yes, this is still better than at least 90% of MCU films for me. I am just comparing it to the other DCEU films so far, in which the tone was radically different. SS is a fun movie, but the jokes were too over the top for me. It's too far away from the tone of DCEU, I understand they wanted more fun, but it was just too much. Also, knowing there is another cut out there with a more similar vibe to the DCEU world pains me.

      Damn dude, y'all may know me by now. Huge DC fan, I love DC because of the dark non cheesy tone. Batman v Superman is my fav movie ever so that says it all. That being said GOTG was amazing, a truly "fun" movie. The dance off at the end was perfect, because this was always a fun movie about a guy and some aliens and a mixtape. It's def the best Marvel movie, second being Winter Soldier third being.. shit I don't know Iron Man I guess. Anyways, point being GOTG delivered what it claimed to be in a big way, it was actually funny and whimsical. SS in inherently too dark to be a fun summer movie, Leto had it right the whole time. They should have made, basically a rated R GOTG, a DC style GOTG but they gave is some Marvel shite.

        I really liked SS but would have preferred a darker story that really explored the Joker/Harley relationship more. This was the first I've seen Joker made to look like he was head over heels for Harley. This was a bit off for me. The cut stuff probably is more akin to the relationship portrayed elsewhere. Still, at the end of the day, for me this had more good/great things than bad things.

        Yeah, that was the weird thing. SS was suppose to be dark, but they threw in some colors, and it looked messy. Anyways, glad it made DC money, so they can continue the universe, otherwise we would have been in trouble.

    The Guardians dance off isn´t the issue. Ronin was total garbage instead (a 2nd Malekith or...) but it trivialized on of the Gems in that scene. THAT ain´t good. The death of Enchantress was well done btw. Great use of Floyd´s perfect aim and the Soultaker.

    I'm holding out that SS, WW, and JL was all in production/near complete when the BvS backlash hit. If I were to bet, everything post WW and JL is going to be more planned, tighter story, and have agreed upon tone prior to making the movies, so this would be Flash, Aquaman, etc.
    However I do think that WW and JL will be more well-liked by critics. What that means for fans, it's a crapshoot. It seems like there's more backlash against DC because fans expect more out of these characters rather than Marvel.

        WW will be interesting. Pending they just completely muck it up and portray Diana in a negative fashion (which I think is highly doubtful), I think that it will be the first critical hit for DC. But we'll see. I thought SS would be that but hindsight is 20/20.

      Agreed...these characters are held to higher standard by everyone, which is why we are getting all this backlash. Also, the Nolanverse is still on people's minds, and honestly I do not think we'll ever come close to that, but I hope I am wrong.

        WB only get´s 1/4 of the China money. BvS made 95 mil over there. Divide that by 4 and then notice that you would rather have a real movie on your hands than a shitty propaganda flick for them. They also only allow 30 something foreign movies inside cinemas every year. SS even manged to get banned though, that is more extreme! That country is Hollywood´s current cancer, good on WB for leaving it alone.

I have been a DC fan since the 90s, read thousands of issues, including every Squid Squad comics EVER. It' s my favorite US team comic of all time and the DCEU now produced the 3rd source accurate, yet critically despised film in a row. John Ostrander, the creator of the Squad (look him up!), "loved" this movie, yet it is being ripped apart for every sin under the sun. Including being an insult to the comic… I was deathly afraid that the same insanity would tank BvS (read my 9,5/10 review for the UC) but it didn't. I am now happy that the critics hated this movie as I can't see myself liking a DCEU film they would. I am also a big Marvel film + comic fan, but why do they get universal acclaim for producing inferior movies that radically change the source material? NO comment, to the review:
The narrative has a 2 act structure. The 1st half is an over the top black comedy with constantly changing "theme songs" to give quick characterization in a crowded cast. Guardians of the Galaxy had pop songs too, but so did Watchmen and the Crow. Stop the rip-off comments, and i liked all 3. The editing is universally criticized and was so fast that even i needed 5 minutes to adjust, and then it HIT me. The director tried to drive me mad, to get inside the character's heads, who are mostly mentally unstable convicts. Genius! All but Flag, Katana and Waller (debatable) are villains, yet the film is being ripped apart for having "bad role" models and violence. The film logo has bullet holes, and features the Joker! WTF? The films isn't exactly a feelgood movie either, never blindly compare it to Guardians again. Deadpool is the only US comic movie with similar ideas. Than hell on Earth, literally, breaks loose, and the mission starts.
The 2nd half is a borderline bleak war movie, with the Squad and a Special Forces unit cleaning streets and rooms for about 1 hour. A few, universally spectacular flashbacks still occur, a few songs, outside of the well done score, still play but things get dark. That drove critics mad! A war movie about unwilling convicts being dark is a plus! A lot of action in an action film is good! A light in the sky, faceless hordes of enemies and an end-of-the-world plot show up. Just as in the hit comics or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Were these by Marvel too? That's the story. Simple and clean, yet twisted as a pretzel, including a few JLA cameos. Now, the very diverse Squad in alphabetical order:
Amanda Waller: Davis nails it, and she ends up being the worst human in the movie, outside of the Joker. The body count on her head makes her the deadliest DCEU (anti-)villain to date. Let's see if she can redeem herself later. Captain Boomerang: Courtney again reminds us that he can act, if the script is good. He even comes back like a… + 1 for the safety Unicorn. Deadshot: The 70s version is played well by Smith and his well-used daughter has a comic counterpart. You can see how happy The Fresh Prince of Belle Reve is to be in a good movie, for once! El Diablo: Hernandez made a mostly unknown villain a highlight, as such characters are Ayer's forte. The way he was forced to "power down" is fascinating and very daring for a (hard) PG-13 movie. Enchantress: Delevingne's ability to go from creepy to deliberately campy inside the same scene is impressive. Certainly the best version of her, critics can suck it. Another great DC big-bad and her romance with Flag had heart, hehe. Who further cares that her "brother", who serves as muscle in cool action scenes, is left unexplored. He is an enforcer, based on a 2 issue villain. How can this be a MAIN criticism? Good on WB for daring a witchcraft-based villain, despite knowing that it would get the film banned in China! Harley Quinn: Robbie played the New52 version, who is a child-killer, so let's stop the role model criticism, and her creator liked her. This version also said that another character needed to "own" being a child-killer here. The Joker (Azzarello's grounded mobster + Morrison's Thin White Duke), also showed genuine love for "his creation", so this movie nailed their dynamic. Especially during her chemical transformation. The movie's best moment and a highlight for the genre. Joker: Leto was the best part of the movie but I am glad that his constant presence was trimmed down by the constantly misreported (surprise?) re-edits. Longer scenes with him would have derailed the picture BEYOND recognition and only 1 whole scene (a short 3rd act gunfight) appears to be left out. He is also the most comic accurate movie version to date and our second perfect interpretation in a row. Katana: Fukuhara did well for a debut perforce and I hope that her backstory will be further explored later. The cracks in the dog on a leach persona were already telling. + 1 for Japanese dialogue with subtitles. Killer Croc: Akinnuoye-Agbaje's inhuman make-up deserves an Oscar, and he is based on the Azzarello version. These movies aren't afraid to dive deep! Rick Flag: Kinnaman played the no-nonsense soldier with conviction well and hints of inner darkness were a pleasant surprise. His repertoires with Deadshot were spot on. A straight man and shooter. Slipknot: Beach did the one thing the character was supposed to do right, 'nuff said.
The action-driven black comedy will ultimately please fans of the DCEU and haters will continue to be baffled by their popularity. David Ayer ain't a perfect, yet innovative, director and delivered his best movie, together with End of Watch. He now earned a life-long fan with me. The DCEU's future never looked brighter and don't forget to read this month's Suicide Squad Rebirth. 8,5/10

  What I love the most about said "review" is how you constantly give excuses in order to give the movie a positive review in a positive light. Also, you can't expect to be taken seriously as unbiased and "professional" when you include things like "don't forget to read this month's Suicide Squad". You can like a movie, but damn! The DCEU is masterpiece after masterpiece for you? Where's the valid criticism? Editing was terrible, most characters were underdeveloped with only Deadshot and Waller having any kind of development, with Flagg not being very far. Harley was great, but zero in the character developing department and the same applies to every other suicide squad character. Joker served nothing for the plot and felt forced into the movie, even though Leto was awesome. I'd love to see more of him but he really was only there for the name recognition. The villain was terrible, had zero motivations besides "i want to rule the planet" which is the typical cartoonish villain plan and was nothing short of generic. I liked the movie, it certainly had it's moments and it's definitely better than a 26% on RT, but it simply failed to have much of substance besides the Deadshot character.

In the comic especially I would re-define and expand on them but they were established characters. Amanda Waller was my creation and Viola Davis embodied her to perfection. I was happy when she was cast, I was delighted when I saw her in the trailers, and I was ecstatic when I saw her in the film. Davis has Amanda’s voice, her look, and her attitude. I was delighted at the after-party when I got a chance to see her face-to-face and tell her how much I enjoyed her performance.”

My problem is that, at least with some of the media reviews, is that the critic is also tired of superhero and ‘tentpole’ films and, overtly or covertly, would like to see their end.
