'Suicide Squad' director David Ayer responds to negative reviews

on 'Suicide Squad' director David Ayer responds to negative reviews

The first Suicide Squad reviews hit the web at 12 noon, and by 12:29 director David Ayer sent out a cryptic tweet in response to them.

The tweet included a quote from Emiliano Zapata, a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution. The quote was in spanish but translated to "Its better to die on your feet than to live on your knees."

Many fans interpreted this as David Ayer responding to the negative Suicide Squad reviews, since he sent it out shortly after they were published, and those fans were right! A few hours later, Ayer explained his previous tweet and elaborated on what he meant by it.

"Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it. Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life," Ayer explained on Twitter.

Ayer stands by the movie that he made, and wouldn't change a thing. And while the critics didn't like, the fans will have the ultimate say. As long as the movie makes money, the future of the Suicide Squad in the DC Universe will be safe.

      We had an A- and a B. I wonder what the UC would have gotten?
      Watchmen got a B too, but it also struggled with a weird-ish TC. The Snyder-curse.

    I'm simply sad by the bleak and disappointing atmosphere of comic book movies, in the one hand we have the Marvel films which are decent movies in the sense of being completely formulaic which in turn make them unambitious and boring, the kind of films you go out from the theatre, tell your girlfriend: oh it was good but you forget all about it 2 hours later because it's the same shit you've been watching for years, then we have the DC films which suffer because the filmmaker behind them, despite being visionaries are utterly incompetent and artificially driven, this of course results in pretty bad movies that actually have some interesting visual elements to them, you kinda get to like some of the characters and remember some stuff in it. So what is the point of going to any comic-book movie if you have to sacrifice the "comic-book" thing or the "movie" thing and you'll always know you'll never get both at the same time...

      I do not agree, Suicide Squad is way more than just visual elements.

      Parts of UC Watchmen even improved on the comic even if the overall product was only a 9/10, compared to the original masterpiece. It´s a "DC film" too and UC BvS was even better.

        Ahh Watchmen, such a great movie. For a newcomer myself to see Watchmen, it was pretty hard to follow, but my cousin explained to me the whole movie. Such a shame that i never watched the UC :(. Have to find the UC blu-ray, if they still have it somewhere.

      MCU - perfect in making boring movies;
      DCEU - butchered in their efforts for brilliance.

    i'll just say something: i think there's a lot of work from a lot of people behind a movie, from the person who writes it to the director, cast and crew. all that stuff can´t be boiled down to the opinion of only a few individuals who got to see this movie before everyone else. do yourselves a favor and put those early opinions on hold until you see the movie and then judge and compare them to your own, they can be right or they can be wrong, only you can decide. don´t let them decide for you.

    I wanted to love Batman V Superman... But the critics were right. Usually when filmmakers make films "for the fans", they usually turn to shit. I was hoping this will be good. I will wait to hear from more people (other than critics) before I waste my hard earned money on it.

    To be honest I'm not surprised at all by the critics negative reviews for SS. Movie critics these days are too dumbed-down and too used to the current 'superhero genre', making them incapable of accepting anything outside of marvel's movie formula. In what universe does a movie like Ironman get higher ratings than V for Vendetta or Watchmen?

    I have a feeling that WW will be DCEU first critical hit ! First off critics will shy away from bashing the flim because of it's pro feminists agenda , that the liberal media is trying to push Like ghostbusters , an Second the trailer looked real good ! But it will be a box office flop ! Lol oh the irony !

    But here's the thing... Critics are fans.. They're just not a fan a mediocrity. I'm tired of the constant division between "critics and fans". In fact, most movies tend to have very similar critic and audience ratings. It's only the DC movies which just "happen" to be so divisive.

      Critics shouldn't be fans as far as i'm concerned

      They go to school and learn why a film is good or bad but once they get out in the real world that all seems to go away and Critics decide early what they like and don't like and that influences people instead of using what they learned in school they create a bias towards actors themes directors tone humor and so on

      It's a shame really but it is what it is i honestly see no difference between some random youtuber reviewing a movie and the ny times reviewing a movie

    I hope it won't be as bad as Sabotage, although the fault from that film comes from acting and writing (Ayer was a co-writer, and I tend to blame Skip Woods for that).

    WBs need to get the stench of Snyder out of these films, as much as I want Justice League to be good you can almost guarantee it will be met by mixed reviews AT BEST.
    A few of the reviews I've read so far say this film is weighed down by the vision set out for it by Snyder.
    In this day in age a lot of people can't afford to go to a lot of films at the cinema, so what do they do? Go by word of mouth of what the reviews say.
    Critics/audiences reviews DO MATTER and they do affect how much these films ultimately end up making.

      What needs to happen is WB needs to take the handcuffs off it's directors and allow them to show their original version of the film because from what i read it sounds like another BvS where they cut a lot of important scenes

    My dear DC nation can't catch a break it seems like. I must say though the DC fans that petitioned to shut down Rotten Tomatoes are just making the DC fan base look bad, cut that shit out. Brush it off and go enjoy the movie.

    Just saw Jeremy Jahns review he said it was the best DCEU movie to date and that it's worth owning on blu ray not that I care about critics but Jeremy Jahns usually has the same taste as me when it comes to movies and he loved it so that being said F the critics I know they just hating cuz it's not a marvel movie I like marvel movies but it's the same formula and let's be honest if it wasn't for BvS their wouldn't have been a civil war the Russo bros confirmed this so thanks to WB and DC for that one these movies will stand the test of time will marvel movies ? I doubt it anyway live on DC forever

    I will still be seeing it and forming my own opinion, but the fact of the matter is in this day and age RT does matter. And I am disappointed even David Ayer couldn't pull through.

    Now i understand the incredibly vocal minority that loved BvS, but we are one more bad film away from becoming a Transformers like franchise, critically crushed movies fueled by strong fans. Thats not what I want for the DCEU, and as the loyal fans we are, I think we deserve better than forcing ourselves to like bad movies. Or if you did genuinely like BvS (by some miracle), having to constantly defend yourself

    I don't get why critics are so so so nitpicky with DC, like: "oh look a joke out of place, oh look a character was sexualized, oh look a not so outstanding villain, oh look some one-liner was said...... BADDDD BAAAAD DC TAKE THIS ROTTEN SCORE 0/10 SHAME ON YOU AYER THIS WAS WORSE THAN F4". Same shit happens with Marvel and they're like "But it was fun anyways.... FRESH SCORE 9/10 GIVE DC TO DISNEY ALREADY"

    Just got back from an early screening. It's a good popcorn flick. Very stylish. Not a perfect film but definitely not what the critics are trampling on. I put it on the level of Hellboy, Blade 1, Capt America, and Iron Man 2. Capt Boomerang, Ike Bernholtz, and Harley were the highlights. Anyone saying The Joker wasn't in it enough is smoking some effing strong weed. The JL cameos were great. I'd say the two weakest parts were Rick Flagg and the score (the score not the soundtrack, the pop songs work really well)

    I saw a test screening of this movie back in July. A version that definitely wasn't fully done, no credits, the cgi was probably about 90% done. But I still loved this movie. I don't understand these bad reviews again. I'm someone who loved BvS but understood it's flaws, but this movie was cohesively so much better. I know the fans will love this movie, and really be the catalyst for its success
