'Suicide Squad' is tracking to have the biggest August opening of all time

When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made over $166 million in its first opening weekend in North America, it set the record for the biggest March opening of all time. Now, it looks like Suicide Squad is going to claim that record for August!

Smart industry analysts are able to gather data and predict how big a movie will open, and right now Suicide Squad is on track for a big $125 million first weekend box office in North America. Some say it could even top $135 million, though it's still a bit too early to know for sure.

Marvel's 2014 movie Guardians of the Galaxy currently holds the biggest August opening weekend box office record with $94.3 million, so Suicide Squad should beat that with ease if these analysts predictions are correct.

Suicide Squad tickets go on sale tomorrow (be sure to come back to Batman News for all the links you need to get your tickets first), and the movie opens on August 5th. We'll know very soon if it turns out to be the big hit everyone thinks it's going to be!

What a pleasant surprise! This is another example of how loyal and committed DC fans are. I hope the quality of the movie will match the tracking success because DC fans deserve it!

  Most of that number (probably above 85%) are just general movie going audiences who want to see a good summer blockbuster and are interested in it. most people who watch these movies are not even aware of Marvel/DC branding or what distinguishes them, especially with this movie.

I don't care about BO or whether it beats Guardians or not. I JUST want it to be good. I can't take any more heartbreak. Zack Snyder has turned me into a bitter, cynical person.

    I've been vigorously defending him for over 10 years. I was an ardent supporter of 'Watchmen' and felt that people were too hard on him . I even fought tooth over nail with people over 'SUCKER PUNCH' as an amazingly ambitious art/exploitation flick . 'Man of Steel' was a massive heartbreak but I still chalked it up to 'at least he tried something new and failed' but I just snapped halfway through BVS. I cannot defend this miserable, excreable pile of filth anymore and to top it all listen to his dumb interviews about 'raping Batman'. FUCK him. He was given SO many chances and he kept on blowing all of them.
    So of course he gets to direct 'Justice League'. WB be mad.

        I still don´t see what unused designs are supposed to tell us. That a version of the film might have existed that was even closer to the 80s source material? Bruce and Jason killed people in the 80s, like a LOT.

        Now you're gonna bring in the 80s for some reason. This is not a criminal trial, dude. I don't have the burden to prove my case beyond reasonable doubt. This is a civil trial, and I supported my case with evidence, shifting the burden on you. And saying, "I still don't see shit" isn't going to convince any judge. You gotta present RELEVANT evidence disproving my assertions. We got 5 similar designs -- one of them was likely used. Hence, halberd, or at best a hooked spear. Still, a deadly weapon.

        I remember Dick using them in the Arkham games; on a side note, I'm still weirded out that they had turned Tim into an adult.
        And while the escrima sticks are set to stun, I still find it funny that Dick is repeatedly electrocuting people and possibly giving them heart attacks. I'm no doctor, but I don't think it's a good idea to repeatedly electrocute someone; even police officers are wary of repeatedly tasering a person.

        The Arkham continuity started strong in the 1st game and now turned into a certified dumpster fire. The 5 game´s narrative do NOT stand up to scrutiny outside of AS and Origins. The same goes for some of the morality. The tie-in comics also strong but look what happened. I pity the fool who will pick up the pieces after Knight. All but Origins Blackgate are still very good tough.

        What happened? I don't read comics, more of a fanfic reader. All I know in terms of the story within the games is that the Arkham Knight reveal could've been done better. Even a non-comic book would've figured it out who the Knight is once Batman had that Joker flashback.

        A lot of things. The Arkham Knight tie-in comic was written without the full game script and is now non-canon (Jason kills Bane for example). They spread 5 writers over 4 games and probably had more for the DLCs that keeps ret-conning on. That crazy continuity screams for a Crisis event by now. Even the comparable Ultimate Marvel didn´t get out of hand that fast...

        It is non-canon now but he chased Bane, who regained his sanity, though Gotham and executed him in front of half the rogues. The game Bane correctly went back to Santa Prisca and there is way more.

        Post 86 to the early 90s was the deadliest time for Batman outside of the late 30 and early 40s. Knightfall + Jason´s death and Barbara´s crippling were written for a reasons in that time frame. Crisis Rebooted Batman was a bleak book, don´t make me bring out the links again, i read every Batman + Tec issue since 1986 and MUCH more.

        I'll have dig out 425. I recall Todd" possibly" killing a dude. Batman killing people to make a point? Not so much. Especially since he questioned having Jason as a partner after wondering what really happened to that guy.
        Year Two Batman was sporting a gun. Again, what was the body count by his hands? Why, if he's killing people, wouldn't Batman just kill Chill? Instead he chose to reveal to his parents' killer his identity.
        What serial killer? KGBeast? Batman didn't kill him.
        Trust me, two of the qualities of Batman that most intrigue me are: no killing & no guns. I'd remember if he was doing that regularly post-Crisis.

        Batman 100% killed KG Beast, a later ret-con doesn´t change than. The original story wouldn´t have a point otherwise. Bruce in Batman was a unrepentant killer and the one in Tec was a goof past 86 for a few years. Why? Because we was rebooted after Miller´s rather extreme + bestselling DKR (he was accused of ruing Batman with DKR for years) and writers were figuring stuff out. Which version would work? Noone knew! Even Dennis O'Neil 1 Batman comic in 1969, another reboot has 2 kills. That´s what Reboots are for. To experiment.
        Batman doesn´t have a no guns policy. He NEVER had. (Not even in DKR.) He just hates them. Read Dixon´s http://vignette2.wikia.noco...
        It is as definitive a statement on Batman and guns as any.

        1.) Retcon or not, the story was later addressed. That's like stating Joker didn't return after Death in the Family just because we see the character in A Lonely Place of Dying.
        2.) he barricaded a highly skilled, still alive opponent in a room. Are we to presume Batman couldn't have escaped either?

        DKR does not have an anti gun message. The speech in the mud pit was propaganda. That Bruce himself use weapons himself before. To kill. Why? Because he was a deconstruction, not a hero. You just proved to me that do didn´t get the comic...
        Even the current New52 reboot Batman has a kill count and you DIDN´t read what i wrote. Most version of Batman have a no-kill rule, SOME don´t. Like the original Golden Age character, who continued to execute people after giving that often reused no-kill rule panel. If Bill Finger din´t give a shit, if current editors don´t, why do you?

        What weapons was he using to kill as the "deconstruction"?
        I've read zero n52. Once I see Batman crying at the end of Flashpoint, there was no doubt I wasn't onboard.
        I am aware he's killed during the 77 year history; especially when he was in the pulp mold. There's been versions where he's done so, but it's not the norm.
        Also, we started this conversation when I disagreed that he killed a lot of people in the late 80s.
        I give a shit because I give a shit. Why does anyone give a shit about 1 thing & not another?
        Seeing this highly skilled person, who trained his whole life to fight crime intrigued me. I wouldn't have been added to the FBI watch list since the 90s if that wasn't something I was fascinated by. Hell, the whole reason I got into the criminal justice field was because of reading Batman.

        Go back further, however, to the era we were discussing. Tears were flooding his face when Todd was killed.
        It wasn't the crying as much as Batman just accepting this note from Allen to be true. No tests, no mention of handwriting comparisons, nothing. He just took the note, read it, accepted it to be genuine, then cried in Allen's presence.
        MAYBE if Kent presented the letter to him I could see him accepting the validity a little more.

        I went back & did my due diligence. 425 continued from 424's events, so I had a little intermingling in my memory.
        Regardless; Batman didn't kill 1 person. The closest would be 2 guys shooting each other trying to shoot Batman. The other close (but still no Batman kill) would've been the primary guy shooting at a stack of cars Batman had climbed. All the other thugs were knocked out with force or tranq darts.

        That's not 425. I can tell by the art style. I think 425 was Aparo. From what I can make out on my iPhone (basing on the style of the Batsymbol) this could be McFarlane or Breyfogle. Todd was Detective Comics. I believe Norm began in Detective Comics & shifted to Batman after the The Penguin Affair crossover. I know by the issue where Drake rescues Batman from the Scarecrow (around 450s), Norm was illustrating the book. Sidebar: his Batmobile was the coolest.
        You referenced Batman 425 to illustrate Batman killing to teach Jason a lesson.
        Which issue is the image from so I can pull it to review? So far, it looks as though the dude is responsible or his own death.

        I'm going through the site & found several "kills" that are exaggerated. For example, this one from Detective Comics 592. The dude is s suicide bomber. He killed himself, Batman just contained the blast.
        There are other examples where Batman hits someone, then they tumble into something that kills him. I don't really see those as him "killing."

  Box office is important for a franchise, and after bvs underperformed, they need a hit, and this looks like it will be it. Most important of all, though, is the critical reception and word of mouth which will dictate how well the movie will do in the following weeks to it's debut. Guardians had excellent critical reception and word of mouth, that even though it opened with 70 M less than bvs, it ended up with a higher domestic box office than it. If these predictions for suicide squad are true, and it lands well with critics and movie going audiences, then it can and will beat BvS at the box office, which would be tremendous.

    I hope it does. I want the first watchable DC movie since 2012. I'm fine with it being 'pretty good'. I don't even want a great one. Like Guardians, if it's a fun romp with character development that entertains me, I'll be fine.
    Thanks to Snyder, DC is scraping the bottom of the barrel right now. And as a fan, I could use some cheering up.

      Absolutely. I for one really loved Man of Steel, but as a movie it really was disappointing (Nolan's attachment to the movie also really raised everyone's expectations to an unrealistic level). I really like Ayer's movies for the most part (street kings and sabotage were awful, but the rest goes from passable to really enjoyable/good). And one of the best parts of his movies is the chemistry between the lead characters. A really good/weird choice, and this can be the first critically acclaimed dc film since The Dark Knight Rises. Here's hoping.

        I actually like both 'Street Kings' and 'Sabotage' (gasp!). They're minor Ayer but as pulpy entertainments they work. However he's been steadily improving as a director ever since he started.
        I LOVED the performances in 'End of Watch' and the sense of scale in 'Fury'. He's also a great writer of violent, sociopathic douchebag characters,( Harsh Times, Dark Blue are underrated) and the way he wrote Denzel's character in 'Training day' makes him IDEAL for writing The Joker.

        Oh, I loved End of Watch! The chemistry and performances were great, and the set pieces were tense and really well done. And that final scene in Fury was really great. I can't wait to see what he'd done with these characters.

    The book was "fine" till Death of the Family. The short Gordon Jr. arc and the very last one are even "good" and my clear highlights. Look them up. New52 SS was THE definition of editorial mismanagement and DC knows. That why it got the A-list staff for Rebirth. Thank god, as they are my favorite US team books. Long live, John Ostrander, Greg Rucka and Gail Simone!

Buying tickets for my family and myself tomorrow. Cannot freakin' wait. As a lifelong DC fan, the fact that I'm getting ready to see a movie about... SUICIDE SQUAD? is insane. When I was growing up they were a bunch of D-list expendables and now they're in the big leagues.
So psyched to see Squad expand the DCEU. More Easter Eggs!

    Weird they still have that. I think when they announced the movie originally they said King shark was going to be in it and that stuck some how. But hell, if King Shark is in the movie, that would be dope. He was in the Flash TV show so not sure if they are going to use that character in both.

  Yeah, Slipknot's gonna die. Probably a demonstration to the other characters early on in the mission. He attempts to escape like in the trailers after taking out a few of those Navy SEAL dudes, grapples away, and BOOM.
  I've been saying this before, if Diablo dies it would probably be a self-sacrifice near then end. It will be to save the other convicts as well as the city.
  I hope to GOD Croc doesn't die. Flag and Katana idc. Boomerang will probably be recaptured like in Assault on Arkham. Deadshot and Harley 100% won't die.

I agree the Damaged Tattoo looks beyond stupid, and so does the ones with the classic Batman logo (on his arm), but I kinda buy the metal teeth and a few the other tattoos. I just hope he's only shirtless for like one scene. I don't want to see all the tattoos every scene he's in.

  I know, but I'd hate it if he was shirtless for every scene that's not shown in the trailers. Two or three scenes in the film would be fine though.

  He's the real MVP. Audiences will be reveling in his return come Justice League. I have a feeling they have something truly epic and heartfelt in mind for his resurrection.

        a better question would be where did YOU go to see BvS , because majority of ppl didn´t really care for superman's death in BvS , it's actually one of the biggest criticism towards the movie, it wasted such an iconic event (supes death) so early in the game. Anyways glad to know ppl in your theater enjoyed the move although chances are those were DC fanboys.
