'The Flash' director Rick Famuyiwa has his top pick for the female lead

The Flash director Rick Famuyiwa is looking to reunite with an actress he worked with on his critically acclaimed movie, Dope.

According to Variety, Kiersey Clemons is Famuyiwa's top pick to play Iris West, the tough-as-nails journalist and friend of Barry Allen, the alter ego of the Flash.

Clemons got her big break working with Famuyiwa on Dope, and recently appeared in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising as well.

The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit says that singer Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton are also being considered for the role.

Other names in the mix to play Iris West in THE FLASH movie along with Kiersey Clemons are singer Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton.

They're trying to get all politically correct, and sometimes I think it's stupid. Of course some people will take your comment the wrong way and maybe even accuse you of racism - but I get what you're saying. We just want to see the characters honored as they were originally (and popularly) portrayed.

      Actually, yes, it can legitimately bother any normal fan. Because a character is more than just an inner world. It's also appearance. The fan associates with the entire package, not just the moral values. With characters like Iris, you can let it slide because she is not well known.

      Have you seen Wally west in the new 52 he resembles nothing like previous Wally in terms of backstory personality etc at all a disgrace by DC. Knowing WB they will screw up Wally on screen, just like in the TV.

      Because his creator Dwayne Macduffie wanted him to reflect what HIS childhood was like as a black male in Detroit. Being black is a unique experience, so is being any other race... but it is harder. Black characters already have the same weight on their shoulders that real black people carry and burden that every time they appear. It is a unspoken responsibility and sometimes not easily given to others.

      I have to disagree but I can understand. The colour of a characters skin should not matter on screen. BUT if the colour of the characters skin is a main component to their story then yes it does matter. I think a character like Blade could be white or black.
      A character like Roland from Dark Tower being black (which is the case as idris Elba is playing him) doesn't sit right with me as that character being white is a huge component to the very racist relationship he has with a black female character thst plays a large part in the books. But characters like flash, Cyborg , joker are all characters that can be any colour of skin.

    But let's be honest here... is Iris West really one of your favorite characters? Is she really on pair with the Justice League members? Is she really on pair with Nightwing, Robin, Superboy, and Supergirl? Is she really on pair with Black Canary or Catwoman? How 'bout Lobo or even Lois Lane?
    To say she is one of your favorite characters has to imply that your "favorite characters list" might very well be almost every single character ever created in DC Comics... And, well, yeah... I mean I understand what you're saying, don't get me wrong, but I don't think Iris is a big deal. She's not as established as other heroes. Now, if it were Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batman, or any major character, yeah I totally understand. But Iris? C'mon... Unless you're so deep into Flash that you care so much about his supporting cast, then, I guess I can see that too. However, I don't think that's the case.

And before you even think to say it I wouldn't mind my favourite characters race being changed one bit as long as it fit in the world being created for it by the director or in another words, made sense within the story.

Only now has she been black and hasn't been a problem except for the implications of our favorite ginger being black too which after thinking really hard doesn't matter either.       These comicbook characters were created in a time where white was standard. We still live in a racist country and the blind people like yourself is the reason we haven't made much progress.
      It's awesome that diversity is being intergrated in the DCEU. I too love these characters but as a person of color I applaud WB for finding talent in other races so that more of us can identify with these characters. I would gladly accept new characters with open arms (Love Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Duke Thomas and RiRi Williams EDIT: my boy Miles Morales and many more!!) but I have also invested in the characters that's been here all these years and I for one welcome the change

      I won't accept the new Jane Thor and Riri Williams (would of been fine if she was the new War Machine not ironMAN), those two I will NOT accept for good reasons. The Amadeus hulk and Sam Nova and Miles and Wiccan and hulkinling and visions, I love those characters. I for one don't welcome changes when it comes to comics like the new captain America series (both are terrible) or the Nighthawk. If you support those two new series I will question the progress you have made.

    For as long as an actor/actress can capture the very essence of the character - I'm okay with it, really. It doesn't bother me as much as the other guy suggests.
    For some people, it can be just as distracting as a white actor playing Jackie Chan in a Jackie Chan biopic. Jackie Chan should be portrayed Chinese because he IS Chinese; then again I supposed people would argue that the Flash and Co. are fictional characters - but I'm not going to go into any of that.

      I think this "Captain DC" guy is missing the point. All of a sudden people are "wrong" for wanting see their comic book characters (whether minor or major) translated and lifted from the pages as closely as they are visually (AND habitually) portrayed? Come on now.
      I am a person of color (I am NOT white), and I am totally cool with Bruce Wayne being white. Why? Because he was illustrated as a white man in the comics for decades (generally speaking). Would it cause me to raise an eyebrow if I'm delivered an interpretation of him being Indian, Latino, or Black? Absolutely! While I won't be condemning the thought, I won't prefer it either!
      With that being said, I won't be losing sleep over the idea that Iris West could potentially be played by Kiersey Clemons, she is a wonderful actress; and Dope is a badass film. Would she be my first choice to play the character? No. Will I hate the film if she actually plays Iris West? No. Would I prefer to have Iris West be a white woman as she was originally drawn in the comics? Yes.

      I personally don't really give a crap about race to be honest. I don't mind Will Smith as Deadshot (I don't like the casting, but not cause he's black. Rather, cause he acts like Will Smith and not Floyd Lawton) and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White is one of the best things in BvS. The reason why it does bother me, is because there seems to be a huge double standard here. People call it "whitewashing" when The Ancient One is played by a white person. Yet they gladly ignore that in the SAME movie Baron Mordo (a traditionally European character) is played by a black man.
      What I've noticed is that people don't seem to mind as long as it doesn't break the hierarchy of oppression constructed by the left. Meaning that it's okay to change male to female. It's okay to change white to black. This is why no one even cares to complain that Ancient One is now played by a woman. I would think this is a much more significant change (gender does somewhat effect character), but people are too busy being offended in the name of "minorities".
      Can people honestly cite me comic book characters who were originally black and/or female and now white and/or male? No, because there would be a moral outrage. The same people saying that "race doesn't matter" (Captain DC) now suddenly claim their race was a "huge part" of their character. That is precisely why I am against these race changes in general. Because it's not the principle that bothers me, it's the regressive attitude towards race and the massive double standard. What Captain DC's argument basically boils down to is this: Race doesn't matter, except if you're black. Then it does matter.
      His arguments as to why Black Panther "needs" to be black are redundant and prove nothing. "He's an African Kings!". So? There aren't any white people in Wakanda? "But if the King was white, you promote white privilege and white supremacy!" Okay, then I guess Obama "promotes" Black supremacy, right? "But he's African! Africans are black!" Okay, but Iris is American, and Americans are white for the most part.
      The point is that he doesn't seem to realize his double standard, never mind care about it.
      Some characters are so widely popular that I don't think it's a particularly good idea to suddenly change race (Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Black Panther, etc). But in all honesty, race to me is just as important as hair color. It's a trivial characteristic, it doesn't say anything about personality.

I've seen way too many people make this stupid comment; listen if you really thought this than look at the new 52 like really look at it. when wally west was reimaginged as a black boy the dc people also took two well known black/mixed characters and made them white, onyx Adams and conner hawk. You failed to prove anything. And besides, Onyxs is SUCH an unknown low-tier, Z-level type character, who cares anyways?       That was the argument/defense during it's production, but with all due respect - I think it's safe to presume that a bald kid with martial arts skills who curiously (and closely) resembles a Chinese monk is strongly suggested to be Asian. This debate can go back and forth, but when you associate the aesthetics with the character, I'm preeeeetty sure people's first thought of his ethnicity is NOT "Yeah, this kid is white" despite being a fictional character from another land.

McConaughey says he wants to do a superhero film, but doesn't know if he can be interested in playing the same character for multiple films. He's another actor who is hesitant because of the multi-film contract that comes with it. Just saying, if you want him, be prepared to just have him for one film if it ever happens.

    Well, the implicit argument here goes something like this -- Your personal discomfort from the change of character X is significantly outweighed by the joy the other group of fans experiences when the character X is altered to be more relatable to them than you.
    But we're not done yet. This can only work with minor characters because if the big names like Batman are altered, then we're looking at a discomfort of millions vs joy of a few.
    Although, with the way Hollywood market is developing in the world, I won't be surprised if China will soon fully dictate the rules. Ready for a Bruce Wang?

      I think I know where you're heading with this, and I don't wish to argue. Anyway, the way I see it, it's not wrong to want to see the characters you grew up with portrayed like the way they are. As far as love interests of the original 7 go, Carol Ferris and Iris West are the two I care about, so of course I have my own preference of these characters.
      On second thought, I concur that this could only work with minor characters. And Bruce Wang seems like a fun idea

god I REALLY don't want to sound racist here, but I do honestly wish they would cast a more traditional looking Iris. White with that kind of rose blonde hair. If anything to at least just distinguish itself a bit more from the show. I do like Candice Patton, and I do like the girl from Dope, but Iris isn't even black in the comics

It's a shame you even have to start with that sentence. I too would rather prefer the original Iris (and Wally?). Not because I prefer white actors, but because that's how they were originally presented. Let's be real here, the only reason DC changed their race is to pander to extreme leftists who cry over this stuff.
For me, Wally West will never ever be the black kid from The Flash TV Show. He will always be the pre-52 / Justice League Wally (and Iris as well).

      No it's not. Again, wasn't even talking about the casting, because they cast her based on the New 52 versions. I can't criticize them for being faithful in the first place. I was criticizing this recent trend to change white characters to black characters for the sake of diversity. It has absolutely nothing to do with this casting.     For me, there's just no resemblance at all. New 52 Wally really seems like a completely different character to me. There are multiple Flash characters out there, it amazes me they didn't just create a new black Flash character. Similar to Miles Morales. But no, instead they were lazy and needlessly changed the race of an established character in the name of "diversity". Haven't had the chance to read Rebirth. But he's still black right?

      ya he is still black, but now the old Wally came back and made Barry remember him. So now classic Wally is back in the DCU and he has regrouped with the Titans. Black Wally is still acting as kid flash I think and is working with the Teen Titans. Basically there are two Wally Wests now

It´s a shame that CW show wasn´t a thing when the N52 started. We could have had a more cohesive take on the Wests, than the current compromise with 2 Wallys. Stick to 1 race, i DON´T care which. (I am half black btw.)
