'Batman v Superman' cinematographer says Ultimate Edition won't change haters opinions

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition Blu-ray was officially announced today. It features over 30 minutes of extra footage that wasn't included in the theatrical cut.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cinematographer Larry Fong tweeted out a link to the Ultimate Edition trailer, and then followed it up with an interesting take on the new version of the movie. "If you hated it, you'll still hate it," he said.

Those of you who are fans, will dig it. If you hated it, you'll still hate it.

I'm not sure Warner Bros. will be happy with that, but at least Fong is being honest. Many fans who didn't like the movie were hoping that the Ultimate Edition would fix some of the problems they had, and make it a more enjoyable experience. It doesn't sound like that's the case here.

As someone who liked Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I definitely agree with the first part of Fong's tweet. Judging from the trailer alone, it looks like this version will be even better. More Batman = more enjoyment for me. Ben Affleck stole the show every time he was on the screen.

We'll all see if the Ultimate Edition changes people's opinions on the movie when it hits Digital HD on June 28th and Blu-ray on July 19th. You can pre-order it on Amazon now.

      I can't really say that the majority who saw BvS like or hate it. I would instead say that opinions are right split almost evenly while there are some who are in-between the sides.
      And I think the majority who didn't like the movie, don't like it. There's a subgroup of them who hate the movie though.

  I do not hate it, but I believe that we have 3 potentially great characters trapped in a movie, that was not really thought through... at places even plainly stupid (like Lane throwing the staff to some ancient well or toilet, or whatever it was).
  I was also disappointed by the rather unimaginative fight choreographs. I mean, when you look at the Marvel fights and they are always full of surprising yet true to character moves... BvS was bombastic yet still dull and bland... at one point there was an explosion on screen, that was not something exploding, just fire smashed at the screen without context... as if we needed more of that...
  And another one was the in your face music... the worst part, that could have been cool, is the theme from Alex Luther (I refuse to call him Lex).
  In my opinion the movie needed another year in script-development and pre-production.
  I really REALLY wanted to like it... but I ended up preferring MoS...

    Lane most likely threw the spear away because she wanted hide it from anyone who might try to use it on Superman.
    The only two explosions in that occurred were when Supes destroyed two remote-controlled machine guns and after Batman has tossed a grenade at a mercenary.
    And I rather liked Lex's theme. It fits his psyche. It just irked me that his and WW's themes were played multiple times in the movie. And while the soundtrack, the movie could've used some quiet music to balance the soundtrack out.

      I understand the motivation but I find the logic of dumping it literally anywhere rather dumb and not fitting a Pulitzer price winner.
      I will buy the BluRay, cause I still have hopes for the extended cut, and then I find said non-context explosion.
      And while Alex's theme was not bad , it really was at some point very distracting. I love the WW theme, but thought that by the end of the movie it was way overused. That is what seemed forced with the OST... it did not enhance the picture but tried to dominate it... and at points it took me out of the immersion...
      I tend to be more forgiving, when the OST is spot on... I admit that :P

      I can understand why a majority of the soundtrack is so loud and booming. It fits the epic battle that we've been waiting to see for years. But I agree that it took me out of the movie sometimes.
      On a side note: I wonder what the soundtrack would be if they ever did a Goku vs Superman movie.

The thing is people who like the movie feel super protective of it because the bashing it got and still getting is underserved. Transformers movies come out every few years they're crap people don't like them then move on, yet some people just can't seem to let go of their hate for BvS. To release negative reviews is something but to release piece after piece on how bad the bad the movie is or go on Twitter rants to tell the whole world how horrible a movie is just too much.
It is things like that that creates rift in the fanboy community why do think an universally praised avengers 2.5 movie opened with less than 180M? a lot of DC fanboys didn't go see the movie on the opening weekend just because they were spiteful of the unprofessionalism of some media who used Civil war's release as yet another occasion to bash BvS.
Like newsflash haters you won, the movie underperformed the RT score is in the 20's % now move on and let the people who enjoyed the movie be...

  When I don't like smth, I don't go on forums and chats about it to bash and spread hateful comments on that like some people on the internet.
  For me, it's similar to situations where every time Marvel fan calls out DC fans in comment sections that they're haters, start flamewars etc, and in reality I see many, many more Marvel fanboys doing that than DC. Yeah, we, fans of DC, started reacting in defensive manner, they would be too if anywhere they go, there'd be constant wave of hate towards the thing they like. It's possible that he just didn't address that category, and was instead focused on the louder members of the community who have indeed voiced very black or very white opinions about it.
Doesn't mean he's suggesting the middle ground doesn't exist, but the polar opposites have been extremely vocal and it's obviously a hot button topic that warrants being pointed out.

Well I figured as much. The Ultimate Edition would probably fix some of the editing and pacing issues present, so people who found that a problem stand a good chance of seeing it rectified. People who "hated" it though? They had more to say than just the editing issues, so they probably won't be satiated.

longer does not always mean better. Ever seen that cut of Dawn of the Dead (the original) where all the scenes from every version were cut together into a 180 minute movie. It totally destroyed the movie because of the ultra slow pace. movies are edited in post for a reason.
I bet the 4 hour version of BvS is an unholy mess with terrible pacing that completely ruins the experience. The movie could have been made much better by cutting out 30 minutes instead of adding another 2 hours.

  yes but most extended editions that work (such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy) not only simply put more footage in there but re-edit the whole thing. Otherwise it becomes a slow and dragging mess and the pacing is ruined, which is why that stuff was edited out of the theatrical version in the first place.
  To get back to Dawn of the Dead, the generally most praised version is Argentos Euro cut which is far shorter then Romeros cut because its more tight, fast paced and driven.
  Another great example is Terminator 2 which works much better in the theatrical version then the 30 minutes longer directors cut. In the DC the flow is all but ruined and the movie just does not feel as tight and explosive anymore in exchange for more character moments.
  The Directors Cut of "Rambo" (2008) was an abomination because even though there was much new footage, almost all of the violent scenes had been cut down.
  But yes sometimes an extended version can enhance a movie. The Wolverine for example was a much better and more brutal movie in the extended version. But blowing up a superhero movie like Batman V Superman to 4 hours can only be a disaster. The theatrical version was already way too long. 4 hours would be a dragging slow ass mess.

They'd never put that for the public. The writing is waaaay too weak for a 4 hour movie, And I can't even imagine the mess it would be if it were 4 hours. The fact that they had a script for a 4 hour movie is so enlightening as to why the movie turned out the way it did in the first place.

It's a love/hate relationship. I love Affleck, Irons, Gadot, SOME of the visuals and the ATTEMPT to do something ambitious in the genre. I hate Eisenberg, the sheer disrespect for Superman supporting characters like Jimmy Olsen, the underdeveloped relationship between Bats and Supes and the narrative that feels like 5 graphic novels smashed together.

well so far the new footage in the trailer isn´t really that exciting. I was hoping for more action, longer Batman/Superman fight, more Wonder Woman and Doomsday action but that does not seem the case. So far it only looks like more plot filler scenes. Which quite frankly is the last thing this movie needs. the theatrical cut was already way too long and overstuffed with unnecessary elements that stretched the movie and only distracted from the main story, slowing down its pacing.

I was hoping for a cut that would make the movie faster and tighter with more brutal action and some good additions to scenes that ended up too choppy and short, not make it even more of a drag until the good stuff happens.

I'm excited to see Clark doing his job and investigating batman. That lex Corp scene is gonna insane if they show the whole thing. So many gun shots were fired and everyone was left within inches of their lives, and he it looks like he has white eyes.

  WB is infamous for not allowing directors to edit their own films for the cinema cut. A Fatman on Batman episode covered that one.
  My hope going forward is that the suits will bite the bullet and try to put out as much of the director´s vision as possible for the first release.

I think you're coming to the wrong conclusion. He's saying if you HATED the movie, which I take to mean if you hated this interpretation of Superman (not a boy scout) or Batman (kills people) you're not going to change your mind.

I appreciate that this cut may make the story seem more coherent, but it should not be required for the average person to appreciate the movie. As the version most see is at the cinemas. You should make the cinema experience the ultimate experience of the movie with a few extras for the home release.

This is the issue, trying to fit so much into the movie with so many comic influences and stories in one movie. It should of been split into two movies. Or have MOS2 and the BvS.

I don't believe Nolan left much on the cutting room floor in his movies did he not? Its Snyder's achilles heel. The visuals are great but the story is all over the shop because so much is cut.

There are a lot of things wrong with the movie but I'm still excited about the future of the DCEU. Bring on SS and WW

      His motivation is envy and inferiority complex. He hates the existence of benevolent super strong alien because it prevent him from being truly on top of the world, so he wants to remove it. Not out of good will, but to quench his ego.
      His actions throughout the movie are complicated, in that they are further pushing his agenda (framing Superman as threat to the world, silently snaring Batman to become his hunting dog, forcing Superman to fight Batman, and finally succeed in killing Superman by unleashing Doomsday when all else fail), but gradually destroying himself, both mentally and morally.

      It's CONSTANTLY hinted at in the movie WHENEVER Lex is on screen.
      Why the wut? It fits his characterization: over dramatic, childishly psychotic, and appallingly cruel. Having Batman fights Superman, no matter who wins and lives in the end, will benefit him.
      First, it entertains him. Setting up the greatest gladiator match in history! He must be so very proud of himself.
      Second, If Superman dies by Batman's hand, good! All that is left to stand in his way is an old ruthless vigilante who is *this* close to be considered public enemy number one.
      Third, If Batman dies instead, Superman is now truly a murderer, and Lex has legitimate excuse to drive the mass and U.S. government against him. Also, he is rid of the pesky vigilante who keeps sniffing his ledger as bonus.
      Fourth, Lex is not without contingency plan: Doomsday, which gets unleashed and manages to "kill" Superman.
      What he didn't see coming was Batman and Superman become comrades overnight, and Wonder Woman's involvement. What undoes his scheme in the end is the fact that his gladiators are, in fact, not without heart and compassion.

I think he may be wrong if key issues are fleshed out, such as Superman's frustration with not being able to save everyone/be attuned to every potential problem all the time.

I can't wait for this release. I have been pumped about it ever since I heard the Ultimate Cut was coming. Re: Fong's comments.... Probably not what the people at Warner Bros would want someone associated with the film to writeon social media. Still one man's opinion, though.

I think what fong is saying is that it is what it is in the end, that they don't intend to change anyone's mind with the UC, if you liked it fine, if you don't it's also fine. I don't think that the ultimate cut changes the story that was told, it will just elaborate on the parts that felt somewhat disjointed due to the cuts requested by WB itself.
