Warner Bros. developing Harley Quinn spin-off movie with Margot Robbie

It appears like Margot Robbie steals the show as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad based on what we've seen in the trailers, and apparently Warner Bros. agrees! The Hollywood Reporter says that Warner Bros. is developing a Harley Quinn spin-off movie, which Robbie would star in and produce as well.

But this wouldn't be a Harley Quinn solo movie, instead, it would feature a cast of female DC Comics heroes and villains. Details are still under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter has heard names like Batgirl and Birds of Prey thrown around.

Margot Robbie's producer credit comes from the fact that this was all her idea. The Hollywood Reporter says she fell in love with DC's female characters while researching comics for her Suicide Squad role, and pitched the project to Warner Bros.

It sounds like this is all in the very early stages at this point, but if Suicide Squad is the big hit that it looks like it'll be, expect this project to get a greenlight over at Warner Bros. soon. Stay tuned to Batman News for more on this exciting new possibility!

I wish you would have added more details there. Like the fact that Margot was actually the one pitching this idea to WB after she read many of the comics and fell in love wth various female DC characters.
You did not even mention the premise of this movie (a Harley-centric movie that would feature a whole ensemble of female DC villains and heroes including the Birds of Prey)

      Never said you were. But Superman had his time. He had over 40 years of time. people just don´t respond to him anymore in movies the way they used to. His concept is too "outdated" in the eyes of many which is why Snyder desperately tried to update him and make him "cool" and badass" for todays audience but in turn he changed the character so much that he alienated most of the longtime Superman fans.
      Superman is stuck in an impossible situation. longtime fans despise the changes made to him and modern audiences just don´t care for him all that much. Superman has gotten to the point where WB does not trust him to carry his own movies anymore.

        It's more complicated than that. Batman was stuck in limbo after what Schumaker did as well. Doesn't mean that Nolan didn't bring him out of it.
        Superman still remains one of the most popular heroes of DC. He's been around longer than any other 'Superhero'.
        He needs the right director. Do you really think the concept of 'Captain America' isn't outdated? Look what the Russos did with it.
        The problem is that people think that heroes are only suppsoed to be 'cool and edgy'. Which is extremely sad.
        I hope we get a good Superman movie, man. I really do. He deserves so much more love than this.

        You hit the nail on the head with Cap. people now even say that Cap is more like Superman then Snyders Superman. Cap is really the perfect example. They made him cool, badass and all that but without comprimising the integrity, core and morality of the character. WB failed to do that with Superman and now it´s almost too late because they have already created their Superman for this universe and can´t just reinvent him again.
        But Cap is much easier to do then Superman. For one, Cap can actually kill people without causing a shitstorm because he is essentially a soldier not a messianic savior figure. He is just a guy from Brooklyn and his way of doing things is way more Batman then Superman. He is kinda the perfect amalgamation of Batman and Superman.
        The Russos made Cap a badass without changing his character one bit. That was the key to success , though making two of the best superhero movies of all time with him certainly didn´t hurt either.

        I'll tell you something. I'm actually waiting for the next decade or two to pass to see the Superman. Like, the definitive version of it. The idiots at WB thought that if they want Superman to be successful, he needs to be more like Batman. I personally enjoyed MoS, and I feel that it's hated more than it should be. But I also believed that there would be more character development for Superman in BvS. Sadly, Batman gets the upper hand yet again.
        I get your point of it being easy. But see, Superman has never been an easy character, at least that's what I feel. He's not an easy character to do. How do you make such a strong individual face threats and still be believable?
        The answer lies in the threats of the mind. Not in terms of physicality, but rather in terms of morals. Ethics.
        Mark Waid. Geoff Johns. Grant Morrison. Hell, Max Landis. All these people have seamlessly shown how Superman can be an incredibly interesting and relatable character.
        Too bad Hollywood believes the source material sucks and the comic book writers are incompetent.

        yes Superman is a very tricky character to get right. I LOVE him, he was my access point to the DCU in 1998 and I have many hundreds of Superman comic books.
        Smallville remains one of my most favorite TV shows of all time because despite it´s flaws and shortcoming they absolutely got those characters right, especially Clark, Lex, Lois and the Kents. Especially the relationship between Clark and the Kents. And Smallville presented Clark and Superman with great threats and high stakes despite his powers because of his humanity and his heart. They really explored where he came from and delved into his complex character but they did it right. He had the warmth, the joy, the empathy but also the humanity and flaws that make you connect so strongly to that character and he never betrayed his core values.
        Some aspects of Man of Steel felt like a half assed twisted imitation of Smallville like Jonathans portrayal and the scenes between Clark and his parents in the flashbacks. Kinda like a repeat of Smallville but without any of it´s heart, joy and warmth.
        But if WB wants a modern, badass yet faithful Superman they only need to look at what another Snyder has done with him in 2013 - because Scott Snyders Superman Unchained book was an absolutely perfect example of how to make Superman relevant, relatable AND badass. One of the best Superman books in years. Though my favorite portrayal in recent years was definitely the Superman in Bryan Millers Smallville Season 11 comicseries. It´s unreal how much he got that character right while still make him relevant, modern and feel like the TV shows Clark at the same time. Just phenomenal.

        In all fairness you can't compare a decades worth of character development in Smallville to a 2 hr plus MOS film. MOS as a feature film simply didn't have the luxury of being able to devote countless hours of character development of an entire cast of Smallville characters. In retrospect there's right and wrong in both adaptations but its far easier giving a 2 hour film a pass for any missteps as oppose to a series with over 200 episodes that span 10 seasons/years. Frankly while I enjoyed Smallville for what it was, particularly the first 4 seasons the series began to stagnate particularly with Clark's character progression with the constant hammering of his "destiny" and the redundancy with his relationship with Lana.
        As the series began to drag on its faults grew more and more apparent as it evolved into an actual Superman series while insisting that it wasn't. Many characters were drastically altered to accommodate budgetary restraints and the insistence on maintaining the "no flights and tights policy" despite the fact that Clark was combating notable foes such as Zod, Doomsday, Darkseid and Metallo. Then when you factor in a lackluster series finale and the fact that after 10 years of viewership and fans were stripped from the privilege of getting a full shot of Clark as Superman.

        lackluster? I thought the Finale was perfect and drove tears to my eyes. Especially the final scene that showed the future. That was THE perfect Superman right there in less then 2 minutes.
        Also the Smallville Season 11 comicseries was phenomenal.

        Well, I understand your sentiment. I forgive the Kent's part because I feel it worked for the movie. Not that I wouldn't have preferred them guiding him. I've always felt that the Kents were the reason Clark became Superman. Just like Bruce's parents death made him Batman.
        The problem also has to do with the backdrop. Hell, how many times do you see a Superman comic when he's flying in the night?
        We hardly saw that in BvS, and in MoS, all colours were faded. Sigh.
        Superman needs a different director. A better director.

        Just so you know i'm part that 'modern audience'. basically i bacame a fan because of the comics lois and clark miniseries but superman started to grow on me since watching mos. before that, the only thing i know about him since childhood is the "its a bird, its a plane, its superman!" line and some other stuff but after watching that movie i was pleasantly suprised bec. it turns out theres a lot to explore with superman's character,. that's what i like about him.
        the only thing i didnt like is that they didnt give much personality to the characters but they can fix that in the next movie HOPEFULLY with a different director

  Absolutely true. Show some freaking respect to the Man of Steel. They need to bring in Supergirl. Obviously there's interest in her from girls of all ages around the world based off of 13 million viewers for a television show. Make her a bit grittier than the television version (NOT difficult in the DCEU) and you have more box-office profits. Superman and Supergirl will be able to bring in money as long as the film is good of course. Hell, have Wonder Woman and Batman cameo if necessary.
  It worked for Captain America. Notice how Cap hasn't really had a solo film since the First Avenger? There's a reason for that. Marvel is smart enough to know that because of his character, Cap is a bit dry for a two hour-plus film. Thus they add in other characters to work with and challenge him.
  Also, WB really needs to tighten their belt. $200 million production budget and $100 million marketing spend on Man of Steel 2. Not a penny more. It's ridiculous to say that a Superman movie needs $400 million to be good. Screw that. Smarten up WB! GIVE US MAN OF STEEL 2 PLEASE!

    I don't think we will see a Superman movie, until WB figure out what they going to do with zack snyder ! JL 1 ,is his last chance in the DCU. if this movie suffers the same issues as BvS, his gone ! if he gets it right this time, then we will definitely see a slot open for another Superman movie.

      Yeah, but The Rock is quite simply the only worthwhile movie he's ever done, and calling it "one of the best action films ever made" is a stretch in my eyes. Michael Bay has some great things about him like wanting to film with actual film and not digital looking crap, and having a pretty awesome eye for visual beautiness, but his action scenes are almost ALWAYS incomprehensible, shaky cam and cut to hell... The Bad Boys movies were a good example of this, and the Transformers fights are just a mess that makes zero sense, both aesthetically and logically. And for how bad some of Snyder's movies are (not counting your opinion on BvS or Man of Steel which are divisive movies, Sucker Punch is a travesty of a movie and that Owl movie was so fucking boring and stupid), at least he shows some care for his movies, which Bay simply doesn't. At least Snyder has that.

        yes The Rock is one of the best all time movies ever. An eternal classic. I freaking love the Bad Boys films, especially the 2nd one. Armageddon is decent, Pearl Harbor makes up for its flaws with one of the greatest action sequences of all time ever put on film, The Island was pretty good, same as Pain & Gain and 13 Hours. the first Transformers was very well done and while the 2nd and 4th films were less then favorable I really loved the 3rd one.

        Sorry, but we'll just have to agree to disagree. Bad Boys is at best a movie to watch on cable when nothing else is on. Non-sensical plot, cookie cutter characters, cliched and incomprehensible action scenes. Pearl Harbor has some explosions here and there, but the movie's boring and an awful interpretation of what really happened. The Rock is really the only thing he's ever done that's actually good in my opinion. But calling it one of the best movies ever is a huge stretch.

With DC having the Wonder Woman film coming to theaters next year, and this possible project being talked about, DC will have an edge as far as female character films goes. They already have better female characters over Marvel anyways - so I am definitely interested to see the vision Maggie has in terms with this project!

      well that was the Marvel Corporate side of things, not Marvel Studios. of course the big business suits don´t give a shit. Luckily Marvel Studios now operates directly under Disney boss Horn and is free of corporate Marvels meddling, giving Feige finally full creative control.
      That being said, the planned female villain of Iron Man 3 was never a character from the comics anyway.
      Also while Marvel Studios has access to some truly great female characters, the vast majority of the really big and awesome female characters are almost entirely X-Men related and thus under the control of Fox. Which is why I was talking specifically about Marvel Comics not Marvel Studios.

        film and comic divisions have ALWAYS been seperate and are not related to each other. the Marvel Comics side is an entirely different department. Always has been. Same with DC comics by the way.
        No I was talking about Marvel Entertainment which is headed by the very meddling idiot Ike Perlmutter. Feige and Marvel Studios had to answer to them for years and ME has made life very difficult and frustrating for Feige. So much that Feige almost walked out eventually, which led to Disney intervening and restructuring things in the movie department. Now Feige and Marvel Studios no longer answer to ME and Perlmutter but to Disneys CEO Alan Horn directly who gives Feige much more control and less grief. The Russos have commented that ever since this change things have gotten much easier and friendlier at Marvel Studios. They even referred to the conflict with Marvel Entertainment as marvels real life "Civil War".
        Now the only things Marvel Entertainment is still overseeing is the TV shows and animated productions.
        So yeah you bet that me and every other fan is relieved as hell about this change.

    Based on MCU they currently have no strong female hero. If the X-Men was part of the MCU then maybe, because that's where majority of their best female characters lie.

      yes Black Widow is indeed one of the greatest female characters in all of comics. No need to make fun of her. Go read the universally acclaimed Edmonson/Noto run of Black Widow or the current Widow comic series by Mark Waid (who also wrote Superman and the Flash in the past) and tell me again that Widow is not one of the greatest and richest female characters ever.
      And don´t even get me started on characters like She-Hulk, Carol danvers, Elektra, Black Cat and the whole host of female A-list characters on the X-Men side of things.
      You´re damn right they got some of the best.
      maybe if you would actually know your Marvel comics history instead of only judging from adaptations you would realize how stupid your accusations are.

        I'm a huge DC Fan but I gotta agree with you. Marvel does have their fair share of great female characters. Why they haven't brought them into the MCU is anyones guess but thats besides the point. I wouldn't say they are better then DC female heroes though. But to each his own.

        I don't watch any of the TV shows (except for the currently cancelled Agent Carter), so I couldn't speak for them. I thought about adding Potts & Foster, but I thought there were scenes they were arguably "damsels in distress". I'm also not certain if put them in the same category as the other ladies; one is a personal assistant turned CEO, the other an astrophysicist.

  What I find interesting; specifically with the negative reviews for BvS, is the double edge sword. The big criticism I read was that the movie wasn't like the MCU movies. Here's the thing, if it was like the MCU, the criticism would've been that it wasn't different.
  Like with Superman Returns. Complaints included it wasn't any different from the original movie. Man of Steel was criticized for not being like the original movie.
