The Joker scolds Harley Quinn in new 'Suicide Squad' photo

A new photo from Suicide Squad is featured in Peter Travers' "Summer Movie Preview" for Rolling Stone magazine. The new image shows Jared Leto's Joker scolding Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

The DC Comics couple has always had a somewhat abusive relationship, and that portrayal will not be any different in Suicide Squad. If you don't mind mild spoilers, you can watch a set video from last year which shows that relationship in action.

The online version of Rolling Stone's Summer Movie Preview does not feature the new image (it's only in the magazine), but if you wish to check it out, you can do so at the source link below.

Watchmen greatest comic book movie? Give me a break, that film has no substance or meaning behind it (Unlike the book), nothing but expensive visuals. It's pretty much why Alan Moore despises comic book movies.

    I agree dude. My friend is a Marvel fanboy and actually found that he liked BvS better(which he was not too impressed by). He said BvS was a whole meal and Civil War was like an snack. He also said that he felt Civil War lacked substance.

    See my DC fanboyism is a somewhat recent development. When I first watched Avengers back in 2012, I really had no preference. My initial reaction was "this is what all the fuss is about?" I mean I thought the movie was okay...it was entertaining but the plot was so freaking generic and none of the humor landed with me. Ultimately it just felt like a kids movie in my opinion.

        the difference between GOTG and Avengers is that, for one thing, GOTG was meant to be a comedy. Plus the humor actually landed and didnt feel childish and corny like it did in the Avengers. Hulk punching Thor was literally to make like 5 year olds or something laugh.

        I will have to disagree. Star-Lord was a man child. His whole schtick was being childish and corny.
        Does a chuckle count? The punch was "bowl full of jelly" funny, but chuckle worthy. Not sure it's "literally" for 5 year olds when the movie is rated PG13. Even so, that's a very small sample size to dismiss it as bait used by the Evil Child Catcher.

Looks late in the movie. What with her makeup diluting and hair being random. And he is wearing the black suit. Therefore, we will see them run in with him and his goons and have an actual fight. Also possible that at the end of it, she'll officially break up with him. I don't really want that, but this is where her character is headed.

  Harley quits him a LOT, but it never lasts. Even when she's in the arms of her BFF/lover Ivy, a part of her always yearns for her puddin'. And even if he's dead, it's unpredictable where her story will lead. Injustice showed a Harley who became more confident and even worked with the Batman. On the other hand, the Arkham series showed a Harley who became more unstable without Mr. J.

        Eh, I see it as it falling under the trope: "Oh, they must be gay or bisexual." Two same gendered characters hang around each other a lot and even live in the same house? "Oh, they must be gay or bisexual".
        I know Pam cares deeply about Harley and vice versa, but I just don't see them being in love with each other. Not to mention, I also see this pairing as basically someone's rule 34 that's become canon.

The mere thought of watching a Marvel movie literally bores the hell out of me. Such despicably cynically safe and boring corporate sludge produced in Kevin Feige's Petri dish intended for consumption by 12-year-olds and condescending critics hungry for fun and idiocy in a superhero movie as opposed to tragedy and weight. But people reward it for lessening the comic book film as an art form, so Disney continues to make a pretty penny off of generic storylines seemingly written (shoddily) from an existing template, created only to make as much money as possible while conforming to every corporate standard and genre cliche instead of subverting expectations and making bolder, more daring statements and actually standing for something and possessing some value. Viewed through that lens, it's taking film, arguably the most beautiful art, and turning it into something that isn't art at all.

  seeing comments like this often makes my day. Usually I am too afraid to share my true feelings toward the MCU because I will come off as a hater. The simple fact of the matter is...its true. It constantly amazes me how few people are able to see the MCU for what it often really is and how what DC is doing has so much more meaning and weight to it. Not saying DC is perfect, because so far, there are definitely some rough edges(and I say that even though I personally loved Man of Steel as well as BvS). I just greatly appreciate the ideas DC is going for and how they are trying to be more than just fun summer action flicks.

    Honestly at first I was expecting yours to be a negative comment. No idea why. I think I'm just used to being condemned for having a strong opinion about the MCU (especially as a DC fan). It's a polarizing opinion for me to put out there but I mean it when I say it makes my day that it made your day. I'm optimistic and hopeful knowing I'm not alone. If people like the MCU, so be it. But I just have my own feelings about it and I'm glad you and I can discuss it rationally and agree instead of having to be submerged in the negative dreck of the Internet. I hate to be negative about Disney and Marvel, sometimes I just get frustrated being in what seems to be a minority. But it's great to have a community like this.

        I just not bother. If you dislike them, it just seems like a waste of time. There are a plethora of movies that just don't look interesting to me. Whether they're on tv, Netflix, or I can borrow them from a friend, I just don't waste the time. I might not have to pay monetarily, but my time is just as valuable.

With this photo, I wonder if it will kill the rumors that the Joker is only in the film as Harley's past instead of being present. I didn't believe that rumor, and I hope that rumor isn't true - I would want the Joker to be present with the rest of the Suicide Squad to make the film more interesting.

As much as I love Joker (my most favorite villain of all time in comics) I always hated his abuse of Harley. Domestic abuse in relationships is a very real and vile thing with guys exerting power over their partners by exploiting their addiction to them. My favorite actress is heavily advocating against this and I have known women who have suffered through this for real so it´s a very touchy subject for me as both man and human being.
And I always feel that it´s impossible for me to root for Joker or love him when he is abusing Harley like that (Paralyzing Barbara was already heavy enough) because it makes my insides crawl with disgust. And I don´t like it because I love my crazy Mistah J and I hate hating him. There is always this fine line between the entertaining, hilarious over the top black humor Joker and the truly vile and despicable Joker that you can´t just root for in those moments. of course the whole Joker/Harley relationship really is a giant metaphor for domestic abuse in relationships which is why I love that DC Comics in recent years really empowered Harley, made her split from Joker and rise (mostly) above her addiction to him. They made her much stronger, more independent and had her stop letting Joker abuse her. She took control and freed herself from him and his abuse and effectively released herself from his grip. This became most evident in Harley Quinn #50. To me this was a very powerful message about her character, her development and for women everywhere suffering from domestic abuse. I usually love Joker and root for him but in that issue he really got what he deserved and cheered for Harley and her victory. It was a victory not just over Joker but a victory over his grip on her, a victory over domestic abuse and a victory for empowered women anywhere. It made Harleys journey from devoted Joker addict to strong independent woman complete.
I hope to see something like this in the movie. A whole arc of Harley from the flashbacks to the end of the movie that shows her becoming the Jokers victim and abused devotee to the point where she finally frees herself of him and overcomes his grip on her, beating the shit out of him and showing him that he will never own her again. It was one of the best things DC ever did for her character in the comics.

    And, I'm just putting this out here, Joker may in fact like Harley. Bruce Timm, Mark Hamill, and other people from Batman TAS have said that Joker may have a soft spot for Harley. Yeah their relationship isn't healthy, but it's a relationship between two murdering psychopaths. Others have pointed out that Joker could easily kill Harley and break another woman, but he almost never truly kill Harley.

    I don't know about the others, but nowhere did I "defend" domestic abuse. It just seemed odd to me that out of all the (worse) shit that Joker does you criticize domestic abuse. He's a villain, and one of the best (at what he does) out there. That's what makes him so iconic. It would be odd if he loved Harley like a normal man would

  You shouldn't root for joker because he's a sociopathic, cold blooded, narcissistic mass murderer and maniac, and has always been that way. If it took domestic violence in his more intimate personal relationships to make you feel a sense of inner conflict and not root for him then you've got some interesting desensitization and odd compartmentalization going on concerning morality and what makes a character worth rooting for. Murdering people left and right is fine scoundrel behavior, but domestic abuse?! Hmpf now you've crossed the line Joker! You've offended my sensibilities! That was a nice essay you wrote there though. Domestic abuse is a horrible, horrible reality of course, but you missed the larger point concerning murdering random citizens being something that should have been a larger signpost to point towards a moral dilemma in rooting for the joker in the first place. That it took the domestic abuse to make you take pause reveals more about your character then it does the issue itself. It makes for top shelf Social Justice Warrior ranting though. Looking back at this picture again, I immediately appreciate this composition.
As an animation artist, we're taught about Line of Action for our characters poses, and the Line of Action is strong for both Harley Quinn and the Joker here (I created the Line of Action with the red lines with this picture).
The Joker's pose is confrontational, and going right at Harley, not just with his forehead, but with his left hand too. Due to this, Harley reacts with her pose, where you can see her feeling uncomfortable, bending back instead of going against the Joker in a way of protest or defense. Quite interesting, I just wanted to share that. :)

  man civil war had weight to it sure it had humor but it serious moments as well it made you think about viewpoints of the two heroes and it pull your heart strings batman v superman does none of this things I left the theater exhausted the pacing was so bad and tone so depressing but your right it doesn't need to be like mcu but it does need fun elements in it to balance the tone it has to be majority of people will enjoy if not then this franchise will fail and that is the truth of it

I can hear the critics now. Suicide Squad fails to build upon the grim and serious tone The DCEU has set up with BVS. The jokes are too funny, the criminals are having too much fun, Harley doesn't have her iconic Brooklyn accent, and The Joker just laughs too much and his hair is too green.
