Yahoo has premiered the first official trailer for Batman: The Killing Joke, the upcoming animated movie from Warner Bros. based on the popular graphic novel.

A fan-made trailer went viral on the internet a few weeks ago, but it was just an edit of footage from a 10 minute featurette about Batman: The Killing Joke from the Justice League vs. Teen Titans Blu-ray. The trailer embedded above is the real deal!

Batman: The Killing Joke has officially been rated R for "some bloody images and disturbing content". It hits Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD later this summer. Stay tuned to Batman News for lots more!

I just came here to say this, seems like the animation has really gown down in this film. It's not very fluid and stiff. It gives off a cheap feeling. I'm a bit disappointed. Mark Hamill's voice work seems great as usual but my hype has gone down a bit.

  That first few secs of Batman was really bad. For a sec I thought I was looking at an amateur YouTube channel. Oddly, the rest of it improves suddenly. Hopefully the animation has more scenes like the end than the front of that trailer.

    I have the feeling it hasn't been fully polished yet. The more frames they add, the more fluid it will look, but that takes both time and money. Depending on the movie, they have had worse or better animation, but I think they will want this to look as good as The Dark Knight Returns, and not bad like Son of Batman.

Hate the animation. DC is regressing with its animated stuff and it's starting to really piss me off. What once was a solid medium of quality has been getting worse by the movie. Where have the Under the Red Hood and Flashpoint days gone to? The animation should be getting better not worse. At least annoying Damian isn't in this.

Good thing I read the comments first. I thought it was going to be awful animation but it looks fine. The only thing I don't like is the bat ears.

  I don't think it's completed. The stiffness will be solved by spending more time animating the frames in between what we are seeing here to make it more fluid. That's going to probably be what they are working on between now and the release date (which still hasn't been finalized yet, so I figure it's still a few months away. This will probably be a mid-summer release).
  Cross your fingers and hope they put as much effort into this as they did TDKReturns.

        That ALONE doesn't. However, it was handled clumsily at best. I should start that I found the movie entertaining and generally acceptable. However it was far from perfect. The pacing was bad, it tried to accomplish too much in too little time, and some disastrous character injustices.

      and not every DC fan lacks the basic intelligence to follow multiple plots and subplots in 1 movie.
      Also not every comic book fan wants to watch a disney comedy flick.

        This movie polarized the entire fan base if you can't see that it's average at best like a Thor dark world type of movie then you are blind and deaf. Over half of the fan base disliked it, the loyal ones are bandwagon blind fans!

        Wait did u say the movie was too cleaver? What? BvS was too cleaver for u? hahahaha this is the most basic stupid ass story line I watched for a long time in a superhero movie. The whole reason they fight, lex luthor and the cameos are them perfect examples of poor story telling. Idk who the hell approved this plot they just were too lazy to come up with a better storyline. Cartoons have more in depth storylines than this. I love batman but u have to admit this was just a lazy ass plot with a moronic director who loves to just blow shit up without a proper reason. I really hope they would look in to the production more in the justice league movie or it'll be a total disaster.

        try harder. transformers was more like AOU. BvS was like Batman the animated series meets arkham video games, and compelling complex story telling similar to that of Cloud Atlas. A lot of people simply didn't like the movie because it doesn't spoon feed you the storyline(s).

And what other complex story telling is in this movie please explain? The cameos? Lol so batman sends an email to wonder woman lol that's like the most laziest thing I have ever seen. Oh wait what about shoe horning Doomsday and ruining his entire origin story which made him a badass in the first place and just made him an ugly giant frog? I understand u are a huge fan so are we. But stating this movie had a complex storyline makes u look like an idiot. This movie had like 100s of plot holes which were clearly just lazy story telling.

        Not on any level can there be a true consensus that this movie wasn't more than average at best.
        How can you have a so called action few with very little action?
        The first hour was filled with dream sequences, batman origin... AGAIN, and dialogue leading to no payoff.
        Sure, If I never saw the trailersI might have thought more of it.
        But the best part of the movie...WAS IN THE TRAILERS.
        And inserting SOME humour would have help the story move along. It didn't need to be "Iron Man" or Ant-Man", but how abut closer to "Winter Soldier" or "Avenger" spots of humour?
        And why is everything in this movie happening at night?

      I don't think the general audience had issues, I've watched the movie with people that don't read comics and one that doesn't like comics and all of them loved it. There were things that went over their heads, but they didn't think it was issues with the story. Like the people that had no comic book background didn't know that the knightmare was part of a future movie, one of my friends thought batman was going crazy, and one thought he was seeing ghosts (the flash). But they didn't get stuck there. Most people that have issues are people who expected a more light hearted movie. Lots of people expected DC to move closer to Marvel with BvS, but DC went somewhere new, so DC broke some peoples hearts, and I understand break ups are rough, but you either move on or continue crying and whiping your nose. When i watched the movie the first time, I was surprised, it was not at all what I expected, but I loved the movie. If there are any issues is that the trailers showed way too much. I'm glad DC is moving in this direction and as we see, DC is sticking with it for the good or the bad, JLA will be an Snyder film, likely he'll step down for JLA2, but will remain as a producer. But DCU is Snyder's baby no matter what anybody says at this point. (So glad there are DC and Marvel Cinematic Universes that are different)

        Olsen's story didn't suit this version of Superman, how would you use that character in a Snyder film? Or how would that character be included in a JL movie? I think he made a call so he can move on and not have people asking about Olsen. BvS was the beginning of a JL movie. (It would have been nice to have a solo superman before BvS)

  When they attempt to do that for their designs, it doesn't feel as fluid or alive as the simplistic styles of Bruce Timm's designs. Not everything stylistic from the comics should drive the character designs, it hurts the animation overall. DC has a few of those....while the rest have better designs and better animation because of that.

In the 10 minute featturette, they mentioned trying to recreate Brian Bolland's style and the challenges they faced in doing so. If you're complaining about the animation, try taking another look at the featurette.
I'm still pretty hyped about this movie. When I first read The Killing Joke I remember being able to imagine Mark Hamill speaking all of the Joker's lines and it really helped the story come alive.

The artwork seemed inconsistent through the pieces of the trailer to me (I'm guessing because of timing and budgeting for the project?). The vocal performances in the trailer are stellar, never questioning both Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill....but I hope the animation/artwork stays strong with the vocal performances for this one.

  Well you can't go wrong when you have THE BATMAN and THE JOKER together. :) I agree on the animation too. I understand the budget and all, but some of these DC animated movies have really boring animation. I'm hoping the movie looks a little more alive than some of the other ones....

Awesome! Warner Bros/DC Comics really upped their game this year! First with BvS, now The Killing Joke, then Suicide Squad, and finally closing out the year with a Untitled DC Game.....

Conroy, to me, is sounding better than ever as Batman recently, from Arkham City onwards. He's really nailing it, and I hope DC keeps finding excuses to use him. Noticed they tried to avoid featuring too much dialogue from Hamill here, mostly looping laughter. Probably the smart thing - that will be the biggest draw.
