When J.K. Simmons talked about playing Gordon in Justice League last week, he revealed that he wouldn't start shooting for another couple of months. That lead fans to assume he has a small role, and now that's confirmed. In a new interview with DP/30, Simmons revealed that he starts shooting in June, and that his role is very small.

"I don't get started on that until June, and my part in the first one is very small. I'm excited to be playing that iconic character in that iconic series," he explained.

It sounds like Simmons didn't get to read the script before signing on. "With these big superhero movies, everyone is so tight lipped about everything that there's a certain amount of going on faith. They asked me to come in and meet with Zack Snyder. We had a great meeting and I'm a big fan of what he's done. We hit it off and he asked me to [play Commissioner Gordon]," he said.

Simmons is hoping that his role in Justice League will allow him to play the character in 2, 3, 4, or even more movies in the DCEU in the future.

      I have my doubts about it that he will be playing a serious character cause he has a bit of a comical charisma but Commissioner Gordon is a serious character.

      Junkie XL or Steven Price, most likely. But I'm secretly hoping for more unconventional choice like Shiro Sagisu or Yuki Kajiura (search their name on youtube and be amazed) :))

      Actually, I can't exactly see J.K. Simmons as fitting actor for Gordon. Our dear commissioner is a no-nonsense guy with brooding dry wit and low key mannerism. Characters I've seen Simmons playing are mostly loud and hilariously sarcastic. Hope he'll surprise me.

        I think the funny part was that, when Kirby made the leap from Marvel, that's what they put him on. It's like putting Grant Morrison on 'Mazing Man and telling him he can't "recreate" the character, but has to write him straight.

        Of course, he also got to create his own projects (the New Gods, Kamandi), but SPJO?

    It's not the size of the role but how you play it son! His role will be a lot bigger in the solo Batman movie though. They obviously have big plans for him if they are introducing him in JL.

    Yep, Zack Snyder seems to be a great recruiter and leader, which is why the DCEU still needs him. Hopefully Simmons' Jim Gordon doesn't get cut from the Justice League theatrical release, like what happened to his alleged movie daughter in BvS.

    FYI, BvS made $851.6 million worldwide, which is pretty damn insane for a poorly critical received film that not only was a sequel to Man of Steel but also introduced us to a very new take on Lex, a new Batman after the highly successful TDK trilogy, the first time bringing Wonder Woman to the big screen, showing us the other superheroes and having the main hero die at the end! People have never really seen superheroes duking it out either.
    Now, I'm not apologizing, I just think it's ridiculous people say BvS is a massive financial failure, which it clearly isn't. I think WB should be very pleased wit the financial results. People are stoked for Suicide Squad and I think that too is going to make a crazy amount of money.

    Now, I'd love that Justice League picture! :D

      Considering the last two Batman movies have made a billion each and a Superman solo made $660 million, one would realistically expect BvS to easily crack a billion.
      BvS is a BO disappointment no matter how you spin it. It took 4 weeks for BvS to beat Iron man domestically. Deadpool, a tier 3 superhero, a R rated on top of that made 750 million on a 60 mill budget.
      "People have never really seen superheroes duking it out either"- exactly, they should have never used a distasteful title like that in the first place.

    Is there any DC fan who is not looking forward to the rest of the movie slate or does not like the direction they are taking?? I want to discuss with you. I love BVS and would like to hear your reasons for not being excited for the rest of the movies.

      looking forward to suicide squad,reminds me a bit of the movie of 1967 the Dirty Dozen,hoping it will be the push that the DC IP desperatley needs,apart from that just the flash which is one of my favourite dc heroes.

      to be honest after bvs im not going to even bother with any other movie that snyder directs so not interested nor hyped for jl.

        Come on man, how can you say you're not excited for JL!! I think you need to understand what Zack's vision is here. He understands these characters. Even in the interviews he knows what he's doing. Superman dying is great in my opinion. This makes the whole world love him now. Now without him every member has to come together to help.

          Yeah he understands the characters. He thinks secret identities are stupid, anyone can figure them out. That's deep understanding.
          He says that he didn't have Batman and Superman say much to each other beyond 4-5 lines because "pretty soon you realize that one guy's got a 'S' on his chest and the other guy is wearing bat ears, and yet they're trying to have this serious conversation about how they're angry with each other. It's silly."
          Yes, he totally respects the characters.

            "Secret identities are stupid" I've heard from Greg Berlanti as well, and possibly from Geoff Johns. They were a nice crutch for story-telling at the height of the Comics Code, when the heroes weren't allowed to fight anyone so they resorted to endless "Oh noez! Lois is trying to figure this out again!" stories.

            I think what it boils down to is that (I believe) the powers-that-be at DC, and I'm including Johns, Lee, DiDio in this, are not fans of the tropes of their own medium and are looking for ways to rewrite or eradicate them when it's possible to do so. If that's the case, then they're probably cheering for Berlanti and Snyder to break the molds. And yes, I can see that having the two of them talking it out in costume would probably look silly in live action... imagine the shawarma scene with Cap having his mask on and Stark in his armor.

            Except the shawarma scene was silly and not a serious one. Even Nolan has a notorious among comic fans (without him saying anything) didn't say something as outrageous. Batman talked to Joker in a serious conversation, Batman talked with Dent in a serious conversation, Snyder is like a jock reading comics. He has no respect for the characters.

          Perhaps these movies are more for us old dudes who were around (and possibly already adults) when those 80's graphic novels hit, and who might have stopped collecting comics after Sandman #75. The kiddies can wait another 30 years to see this Flashpoint stuff :) .

          More seriously, I do think that the DC Films braintrust (the Snyders, Roven, Geoff Johns, etc.) are consciously viewing the DCU through a deconstructionist Watchmen-esque lens when assembling this universe, that the whole viewpoint of the movies is summed up in Perry White's "it's not 1938 anymore."

            I agree with Red on this one. I want to see how this trilogy that Zack started with Man of Steel plays out. One thing I respect about Snyder is that he always swings for the fences.

            I think the problem with Superman Returns was its approach. I didn't want to see a continuation of Christopher Reeve's version. And yes, Bryan Singer is much better than Zack Snyder in my honest opinion.

            I don't hate Snyder, I do like him. I think he's a smart individual and his ideas are often pretty awesome. 300 is a film that I don't think would be anything great if it wasn't for Snyder, Dawn of the Dead was pretty damn good and Watchmen, while I don't think was a good film, it was a fresh approach to comic book films. It's just his lack of good storytelling. All the films that I've mentioned, apart from Watchmen are action films with some pretty straightforward plots and Watchmen's weakness was the pacing of the plot, especially one that is that thick. I felt like it dragged a lot of the time. If DCU are going to have large storylines like they had in BvS, Snyder is not the man for the job. I do hope they stay on course with intricate plots, just get another director.

            I think that WB plans to have different directors for most of these projects. It's just that snyder has the tough responsibility to lay the ground work. I think he has his trilogy in mind with MOS, BVS and JL to lay the ground work. After that there would of course be different directors for the other characters in the DCEU. But let the man finish what he started. Lets see where how he completes his trilogy, then we can look back on it as a whole and judge it. I personally am very interested to see where he is going with this in the long run.

            His individuals film's stories in the DCU are some of the most choppy movies I've seen. Man of Steel was easy to forgive since so much else was done so well but BvS went off the rails. I can't enjoy it with so many problems with the pacing and quality of the storytelling.

            Yeah he has some storytelling issues, but his directorial/visual skills in my opinion are truly unique. When you watch his movies, you know there are his movies and very few directors could establish that. BVS in my opinion was beautifully shot (that introduction scene and that desert batman scene were one of a kind). I think that the only thing Snyder needs is someone to take the burden off of him story wise and let him put all of his energy into directing those artful images, because that is his strong suit. Enter George Miller and Geoff Johns as producers/exec producers in JL.

            Very true. But I like to think of it as the Directer, writer and producer works together to create the overall picture. I believe Zack is a good director of visuals and actors (which I believe is a very underrated strength of his). I didnt find one "bad" or "phoned in" performance in BVS or MOS. Regardless of story he gets the best out of his actors. Though with BVS he didn't have a Geoff Johns to assist him and I think the Geoff being a little more involved this time around is a plus. At the end of the day Zack swung for the fences with BVS but to most he didnt hit the mark they were expecting. Though I like the deconstruction of the characters he has done, most people did not recieve it well. Thats why I think with the final part of his trilogy "JL" we'll see what his was truly striving for as a whole. Grant it, it's your opinion to not want to support it and thats cool. But at the end of the day I hope those on this site give him this final chance to show us his fulfilled vision. It might be a disaster. It might be a massive achievement. Thats what is exciting about it in my eyes...the somewhat unknown thats left...TBD

            Agree that his visual style is one of a kind, but he needs to learn how to tell a story in order for me to fully appreciate them. I really don't care who the producers are honestly, Nolan didn't help much with Man of Steel and I don't think Miller or Johns will be able to help with the Justice League. If the film has a simple straightforward plot, than cool, Snyder will pull it off. But for a Justice League film, that's not what I want and I don't think that will be the case, especially with Terrio writing the script.

      My confidence in the DCEU took a hit after BvS to be honest. I'm still excited for Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman, but I have my worries about the core of the DCEU, The Justice League.

      I don't think there's any DC fan who is not looking forward to other movies in the DCEU. Problems, however, lie with the Justice League and Superman movies, which of course have everything to do with Zack Snyder. The rest of the movie slate, nevertheless, is promising. So prepare for my lengthy ranting.
      Snyder is a talented visual director, but nobody can deny the fact that he's not very good at story telling and characterization. His most recent movies, which I enjoyed but did not absolutely love, all suffered from the same flaws. Weird pacing, incoherent story telling, underdeveloped characters whom we just kinda accept but never truly feel connected to. I'm not an expert of film making, but this much I can tell.
      A major concern that I also have is the direction that Zack Snyder chose to approach Superman. From what I've seen so far, he who claimed to be a massive comic book fan lacks a certain understanding of the core of Supes' being, of the ideology for which this character stands, of the values he upholds, of what he means to the people who grew up admiring him. I understand and am open to new interpretation of the character, but what I've seen of him so far is not another interpretation of Superman, but a different character who has his appearance. However, I truly wish it will get better from this point. Snyder promised us fans to bring the comics to life, and he certainly did so visually, but fell short of truly giving us the "who" and "what" these characters are spiritually

        I don't think you're wrong at all. Yes Snyder is not the most skilled director. But I happened to like his version of superman. He modernized him and made him relate in real life. MOS was his first intro to world. In BVS people are divided on him. At the end however everyone accepts Superman. So next time Supes shows up he will be like Superman we know and love.

      I don't think he can. Snyder has full control over Superman so he can kill off Jimmy Olsen if he wants to, but Jim Gordon belongs to the Batman verse, and that's in Affleck's hand now.

        Injustice killed off Lois and Jimmy already in it´s first issue. It was shocking but everyone accepted it without bitching and hating on Tom Taylor about it. And Jimmy was killed in that issue in almost the exact same way that he died in BvS - so why was it okay for Injustice to do that but it´s such a crime in BvS ?

        Btw fun fact : Michael Cassidy, who played Jimmy in BvS played Lex Luthors cloned brother "Grant" in Season 7 of Smallville. He had an affair with Lois Lane and after he discovered his true origin and became too much of a liability for Lex (Grant was also loved by Lex ´father Lionel in ways Lex never was) Lex had him killed in front of Lionel.

            yeah bot it bothered a whole lot of other people. and many of those same people didn´t lose their shit the same way when Jimmy was killed off in Injustice. Again I ask - why is it okay for Injustice and not for BvS ? Both are alternate universes and are not main canon. It just makes no fricking sense.

            Because Injustice basically happens on another Earth, which exists at the same time as the main canon verse. In the Injustice verse things don't happen like what they suppose to. BvS is independent of the comics, but in it own sense the main canon verse of the DCEU, which makes it not okay for some people.

        True. No offense, but I am tired of hearing people talk about Jimmy Olsen like he is a Jim Gordon or Lois Lane type of character. He is a cool supporting character within the Superman Mythos that was there for comic relief mostly, but I even rate Perry as a more important character than Jimmy. I like the guy, but please...I feel more connection with the girl from man of steel, who I also believe has the last name Olsen.

          My guess is that the only reason Supergirl is allowed to use Jimmy as a main character (while not allowed to show Lois or Perry) is because he plays no important part whatsoever in the DCEU. So that was already a strong indicator he won´t be much around in the movies. Same with Lucy and Sam Lane I guess since they also play major parts on Supergirl.

            He's not interesting he's just a funny damsel in distress type that gets himself into trouble and then Supes has to save. Lois is already that and Batman represents good humanity. Jimmy is just unnecessary in this movieverse, he only works as a character when Lois doesn't know that Superman is Clark, that entire storyline never existed in this version.

            Lois shouldn't be a damsel in distress in the first place, so fail on Snyder's part. Adams is a great actress, but her Lois portrayal is just out of character. Batman represents good humanity? Lmao! Batman is a kill away from insanity.. Oh wait, that already happened.
            Yeah Clark Kent is dead, because Snyder says fuck you, secret identities are ridiculous and pointless. Soon he'll kill off Bruce Wayne, Barry Allen, Diana Prince etc.

        Not really, but it's just disrespect to characters and source material. To feature him for one-two minutes is one thing. But to kill him in first minute of his appearance because you don't have space for him in your movie is just stupid. Maybe some level headed guy who'll direct Superman in future would want to use him?
        Just cut him out if you don't like the character, that's what I wanna say

      $851Mil is so bad that WB announced 2 additional movies.Movie was awesome,was it perfect??Fucking no but it didn't and doesn't deserve the hate it's getting.Most of the critics went in expecting a Marvel movie and got the opposite.I loved it and im glad Zack Snyder is still around.Bring on the Justice League.Im still hyped for the DCEU and nothing's gonna change that

        Due I seen it 6x times..I love lots of elements of the film, that does not mean its without issues..do not sit there and act as if Zack is not disrespecting the source material..Im looking forward to everything...and that sum is a joke...its the fucking trinity of all fiction...a aquaman movie or cyborg getting those dollars is high marks...I appreciate the difference and the much more mature tone but fundamentally changing aspects of the characters..hell no..Zack needs to step aside..

    Same. There was enjoyment to be had in BvS but overall, it was not a good film. Quite the disappointment, especially after waiting 3 years for it. I don't understand how the studio thought they could release such a mess of a film for a franchise of this magnitude in it's early and most pivotal years. And now knowing they are moving forward with Justice League with the exact same creative team as BvS, yeah, you can count me out of the hype wagon.

    Crazy how I'm looking forward to Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Sucide Squad more than a Justice League movie.

    I am guessing Gordons role in JL will be similar in size to Nick Furys role in Age of Ultron. But yeah it was to be expected. Justice League comics usually don´t really involve Jim Gordon except for the occasional cameo here and there. Honestly he would have been better used in BvS or even SS then JL
