Amy Adams on Batman v Superman's mixed reaction: Make like Taylor Swift and shake it off

MTV's Josh Horowitz caught up with Amy Adams at CinemaCon to talk about the mixed reaction Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been getting. Adams stayed positive and quoted a famous Taylor Swift song.

“That’s life, right?” Adams says in the clip above. “I mean, you want people to like you but like, what is that? I sort of follow Taylor Swift at that point, you know? I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake it off.”

Excellent words of wisdom by Taylor Swift echoed by Amy Adams there. If you loved Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, that's great! If others didn't... don't let it take away from your enjoyment. Sometimes you just have to shake it off.

True, what else are you to do. Hopefully she doesn't die in Justice League and they actually make use of her talent and character in a Man of Steel sequel. She had some stuff to do in BvS and I loved all of it but I felt it wasn't really pivotal to much of the storyline. And because of that, kinda dumbed down the character and her arc.

  I believe in Birthright? Or Earth One Superman, or even Secret Origins lol, I forgot which one. I wouldn't say she was pivotal (probably wrong choice of words), she did have her own very interesting plotline investigating Lex Luthor. It kinda provided a better base for the distrust of Luthor. I feel like it was a major missed opportunity for them not to have done something similar in BvS.

    She investigated Luthor in BvS, that's the plot around the bullet. She discovered Luthor lurking around Superman. Even Luthor said something about Lois investigating on him.
    And she is the one that discovers the whole plan of Luthor.
    And also, she is who saved Superman from being killed by Batman.

      Yeah. In my opinion she was kick-ass female character in it. Unlike the usual love interest in sequels like this, Lois actually had a pretty darn big role in it.

      I don't think it was to "frame" Superman so much as to show that his actions, no matter how good they seem, can have unforeseen, sometimes deadly, effects.

  Lois is the only human in these movies who isn't jaded in some way or damaged. She's that last and enduring piece of hope in a dark world. She also was on to Luthor in BvS before Clark or Bruce was. The minute these movies don't find "room" for a human on the ground using their brain to find the truth and help the people without the aid of a mask or cape is the minute they lose sight of what this is supposed to be about.

P.S. This isn't meant for Amy Adams' performance, but rather, the creative team and Zack Snyder's direction. Stop complaining...I wasn't even talking bad about the actress

I loved BvS for what it was, but some of the concerns were legitimate (ex: editing issue and story flow). I might sound like a hater, but I'm not, and please don't go tell me I wasn't paying attention to the movie. I watched it 4 times and can probably tell you words for words what the dialogue was. The movie could've been much better and that's a fact

    That's not enough times though, you have to watch it exactly 8 times to appreciate this masterpiece lol.
    In all honesty, I enjoyed the film but my god, that movie was flawed. There's a reason it has 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. And I know, screw the critics right? But 56% of the critics liked Man of Steel, a lot of those same critics ended up disliking BvS. But screw those critics too right?

    The movie has it's problems, granted, but not utter "garbage" and "embarrassingly bad" filmmaking like you and so many others claim. I think folks like you rode the Critics' Hate Wave into the theater opening weekend and you didn't do what any film fan should do before going into a movie: Leave Your Expectations At The Door.

      Well, I still can't agree with you on the story, though I'm sure the 3 hr cut's gonna fill in a lot of gaps. I will say I feel it was the wrong move to not release the intended package, instead chopping so much out, but I didn't mind it. There are many examples of directors cuts completely changing people's perceptions of a movie, a few examples being,
      Kingdom of Heaven
      Superman II: The Donner Cut
      Watchmen
      Maybe the same will happen for you with Snyder's BvS D's Cut.
      Sorry you didn't enjoy the movie like those of us who did, as it's just making for a much better overall DCEU experience to like both of its initial installments with a great looking third, coming later this summer. I hope Justice League treats you better.

    I don't think the story was embarrassingly bad, it was more of an editing problem. They tried to accomplish too much within 2hours 31minutes and it ended up being messy. Other than that, I still think the movie was good.

      When I say story I'm including character motives. The actual plot is weak and unconvincing. It's so poorly developed that the titular action sequence falls flat and isn't even fun to watch.

      It's sad, but I have to agree with you. I'm not sure how and why they did it but the character motivation was seriously insufficient. The cores of their beings, what they stand for and believe in, their methods, their ideologies...everything about Bat and Supes is a stark contrast and they chose to go in that direction in the movie...sigh....
      On another note, if we go into details like this, the movie sounds bad, but I had a good time with it and I loved it for what it was. Sometimes we just have to be less nitpicky

      I reserve the right to nit pick. I enjoy movies that I can think deeply about.
      It was a simple story they could have told too. They took visual inspiration from TDKReturns but missed the whole reasoning behind their fight. After MOS Superman should have started working for the Government out of a naive respect for authority and the will of the people. Batman ought to have had the mission to determine Superman's weakness and show him that he can be beat, to protect from government overreach. They could have left us in the dark on whether Batman wanted to kill superman so it would be a pleasant surprise when he spares his life and tells him to never forget that someone can defeat him. In the background Lex should have been secretly working with the same
      branch of government that Superman was but also secretly planning to kill Superman without the governments consent. It would have given Batman and Superman a better mission after their fight and shown that the government both needs power to protect its citizens and oversight to protect against its self.
      That movie could have gotten the characters right, been loaded with social commentary and depth, and it could have been even more entertaining because we would have been invested in it.

  I respectfully disagree. They make films for the audience, without an audience there are no movies. I know opinions are subjective and you can't please everyone, but nothing in this world, including all forms of art, is perfect. There are always rooms for development. Film making is a collaborative process. And criticism, whether it's good or bad, is there to make a margin of what works and what not. I think there's nothing wrong with criticism, as long as it's constructive, not just for the sake of hating.

    The point of focus groups and test screening is to test the water before you jump in. But I agree on it being a very inaccurate way to measure how a movie is gonna be received. However, BvS is already out there and what I meant to say is...it doesn't hurt to take criticism into account...whether they follow through, is a different matter

      I think differently. IMO, film is a form of art. The studio might only care about the money, but from the filmmaker's perspective, it is. I go to the movie theater not only for entertainment and escapism, but to enjoy art too. The cinematography, story telling, music score....all those things, you can't say they are not art

      Art is self contained and should be based on the vision of an artist. BvS seems to be based on muddled projections of a corporation's plans for a licensed property, to push revenue, not to promote creativity and reflection.
      I'm not arguing that film is not art, I'm arguing that this film, and films like it, are not art because they lack the vision, creativity, and hold on their audience that I associate with art.

      He used a lot of TDKR in it. There are even multiple shots that filmed identical to panels from the comic, IE: the hand gun under the pearl necklace.

Not sure it's going to happen honestly. I feel WB and Snyder misunderstood what was actually wrong with Man of Steel and doubled down on the actual issues in BvS. Now with a report saying the JL film will now be more of an audience pleaser even furthers my worries. The problem with BvS wasn't the tone or how audience friendly it was. It was the pacing, execution and un-fleshed out characters that screwed up the movie.

  That is indeed my concern as well. They listened to the wrong crowd and ended up making more mistakes. My issues with MoS have never been the destruction or anything that trivial. It was the way the characters were under-developed. And guess what, it happened again. I liked BvS better than MoS and enjoyed what they did with the DCEU...but if they kept doing this with JL, I'd be very worried.

    Yeah, you touched on something interesting. You can get away with the destruction if you make the characters and story well crafted enough that you're invested in the characters and how they deal with the destruction. These films haven't created a universe where the audience cares too much about what's going on, so the destruction is just wanton.

  Unfortunately, far too few people- the vast majority of negative professional 'critics' included- fail to make that distinction, and whine about 'fun' and the tone. My three gripes though I loved the film) were its editing, that it needed more time with each character, and its pacing (due to the editing) was often off. But that can all be amended in the Ultimate Cut to a fairly large extent, so I'm excited for July.

    I agree with you. I am a Marvel girl but I like DC too. I liked the film because it was different. If you watch the BM cartoon from 90s and JL they are quite dark. Also DC went to Mortal Kombat (a very dark game)to do injustice game and did a vs game with them. What does that tell you? The excuse about not being "fun and the tone" didn't wash with me sorry. When I saw the trailer I knew this was going to be a serious film. People are asking DC to be something it is not. It's like asking Mortal Kombat to be like Street Fighter NOT GOING TO HAPPEN and visa versa. The film had its issues but it does not deserve the murdering it is getting.

  Masses generally have no knowledge on stuff like this..they have been force fed cookie cuttwe bland movies...so everyone thinks, this is fun and the only way cbm should be done...the editing is my gripe with the film and how jimmey was killed off..other than that, 5 viewings for me and my fiance wanst to go see it again..I loved this film..Zack definately can improve and hope this new editor does a much better job..I wish I could see the 4hr cut..

    I feel editing was very much the main issue. About 80% of the films scenes were fantastic, but they were put together in such a jarring and messy way. Everytime I got invested in a scene, it just suddenly cuts, and it just kept doing that throughout the movie. Incredibly irritating, especially because all the scenes were just fantastic. Forget about the editor improving, hire another one altogether.

Perhaps you should actually watch what she says in the video. She says in the video that she does listen to critique and thinks on it but that, at same time, she can't change it. Either way, she didn't direct this movie nor did she write it. None of the response to yuis movie lies with her. She has exactly the right attitude. She's very classy here.

Much like Man of Steel, most of this movie's criticism is bred out of either ignorance toward the story or personal biases. There are some problems with the film, as there are with all movies, but in my view they're not enough to make it any less than a very good movie (and I mean movie in general, not just as a superhero movie).

To quote Ma Kent, "people hate what they don't understand". So keep on keepin' on, Zack and co. Keep making great movies about superheroes, and don't feel the need to bow to the minority's demands for more escapist storytelling. The genre can be so much more than that if we allow it to. Comics themselves grew out of that stage long ago, and there's no reason the movies can't follow suit.

I don't believe there has ever been a more unreasonably hated movie that has ever been made like BvS. There are 2 to 3 dozen comic book movies that can't touch it in quality and yet it is treated as the worst film ever created. I'll never understand it.

Dude you have to at least agree it had problems. People don't hate a movie like Batman v Superman this much just for the heck of it. I know some people hate things that others hate. But me, I was looking forward to this movie for a long time. I was so excited. And when I watched it I felt deflated. I didn't like it.
You can like the movie but PLEASE don't tell Zack Snyder to keep on keeping on. He needs to change what he is doing fast. This wasn't a 300/Watchmen for him. It was more like Sucker Punch.
I liked Man of Steel. I like a good amount of Marvel movies but I'm a DC guy. So please explain why I didn't like it without insulting my intelligence.
The Martha thing was dumb. Why would Clark say his moms first name? And why would Batman have a conniption? Did he think Superman was messing with his head when he was on the brink of death? That moment would have been great with a simple "they're going to kill MY MOTHER." Because, you know, everyone has mothers and that's a universal thing that you could appeal to for the audience and for Batman. It was like Snyder just found out their moms had the same name and he's like "I had to put that in there."
This Batman is a killer. We finally get a DC movie universe and its Batman is a killer. Go with the classic interpretation before you go experimental.
Anyway. I could go on but I know you'll just say I'm bitchin and complaining and call me an uneducated troll who just didn't understand the movie. That's okay.
Meanwhile, I'm gonna watch Batman: The Animated Series to cleanse my mind of the BvS thoughts.

  I am typing this comment in response to yours because you said Martha thing was dumb. I am not doing this to get in argument or something, no, i want to explain why Martha thing was a good idea.
  Before i start, i am letting you know that i am an aspiring filmmaker and so i take certain directors as inspiration and, yes, one of them is Zack Snyder. So i am not Marvel fan or DC fan.
  The use of the name Martha started with Lex and that kept on ringing in Clark's mind. So when he was beaten down by Bruce he said Martha because it was the only word running through his mind for fear of losing her. That stopped Bruce from killing him , sure it got his attention, but it drove him mad. If Clark said "they are going to kill MY MOTHER" then Bruce would have never listened to him because in his eyes Superman is an alien, a clown, a potential threat and he got betrayed those he trusted and he was in no point of trusting Clark, so why would he listen? Thats why, according to the story, Lois was there. And she is a fellow human and she is the one who said that it was Clark's mother's name. And thats where Bruce understood the fact that a man who wants to save his mother will never attempt to destroy the world no matter what because his mother is part of it. And adding to that, Bruce promises Clark that he will save his mother not because of the name Martha.
  There is a reason for that making of promise. Bruce kind of blames himself for the death of his parents because he was not able to do anything in those moments like his parents did to protect him. And that guilt becomes one of the reasons why he chose to be batman and at some point he wished he could have a second chance to save his parents, but things dont work like that.
  So when he came to know someone else 's mother was about to die he took at as a second chance. Thats why he says " i promise you that Martha wont die".
  That was the idea.
  When the title of this film was announced , like everyone else, i thought there is going to be huge awesome fight. No, the fight is between their thinking. What batman thinks of superman? Why does he wants to destroy him and what stops him to? What superman thinks of batman and the world he is living in?
  Batman saw Superman as the first person for the first to sacrifice himself for the WORLD. Wonder Woman saw both of them fighting for the world, a person who once lost faith in mankind.
  You cant have justice league without trusting each other. And you cant have trust unless you face the consequence of misunderstanding of each perspective.
  Zack snyder wanted to show there is more to superheroes than fighting against evil. Making mistakes is what brings these superheroes down to the reality.
  If you still think Martha idea was dumb then let me ask you a question.
  How come starting a war to save a friend (CA:CW) is reasonable but stopping a fight in order to save a mother is not?

  Snyder also has this Ayn Rand view on Superman where he gets little to no enjoyment from saving people. I also can't stand his I made it for the fans defense when he killed Jimmy Olsen, have Superman kill a warlord, have Lex act like a crazy atheist Lex jr, and shoehorned an ugly Doomsday design.

  I've seen a couple of explanations why he would say Martha, but one of the most simple is that Superman isn't dumb. He knew Batman was Bruce Wayne. You don't think he did some research on the guy and knew saying his mother's name would probably affect him?
  Batman had a "conniption" because he was reminded of his parent's death. This one tragedy is always in the back of his mind, influencing what he does. At the point he was going to kill Superman he wasn't himself, hence Alfred's comments earlier in the film. So if Superman had said, "They're going to kill my mother." THAT Batman probably would have said, "Well then you will be seeing her soon." and just finished what he was doing.
  At first I didn't like the Martha thing either, I think part of it is that when Superman and Batman fight the conclusion is always kind of a let down because we want a definitive winner, and that never truly happens. However after thinking about it and watching the movie again I would say that is one of my favorite parts, if for nothing else, because of Affleck's great acting.

  Very difficult to take your opinion seriously when you make "This Batman is a killer." comments when that is part of the characters history in the films with Bale and Keaton especially and also the comics. The only version of Batman that has not killed is the cartoon one. Then there is context and purpose that has to be taken into consideration and what Zack did with Ben's version not only makes sense but becomes an important evolutionary process of a Batman that has lost his way to one that returns to the light. "I failed him in life, I won't fail him in life." Truth is Zack has handled the killing element of Batman better than Nolan and Burton ever did.

      If you can't see the same thing that a child saw in the film, "but he didn't do anything wrong?" Then you're not worth talking to.

Sad that dc and wb pulled their main 3 heroes and still havent even reached 1 billion,as a person who grew up with the original Donner film Synder's BvS is a travesty.
Seems you got it all wrong,seems Snyder bowed down to the minoruty aka the people who liked the film and left out a HUUUUUGGGGEEEEEE demographic of people like my friend Paco for example, sad state of affairs when he couldnt take his kids to go see the movie.
You can dress a donkey in a silk dress,slap some lipstick on it and call it Lola and it still isnt right, kinda funny thou you people always have someone to blame.
Critics are your scapegoat,well hate to break it to you but not everyone listens to them,they may have had some effect on some ammount of people that didnt go to see the movie but those numbers are in a minority,dc fans that have been waiting for 3 long years were met with well you know what pos Snyder delivered.
This movie if done right should have surpassed AVATAR in earnings,and well look where it still is at the moment,seems ill be keeping my posting name for a long long time.

Yes the movie can have dark tones,be a bit gritty but this was that but on steroids,it was like a depressed emo,camping in a graveyard,listening to maryln manson while killing puppies.

If you did better go back in time and watch Reeve in the Donner version because numbers dont lie and the numbers are saying people didnt like BvS...as simple as that.
Superman is supposed to be a beacon of hope,ray of light and as good as a boy scout eating a slice of apple pie while doing charity work,as Clark Kent well beh Cavill couldnt even pull that off, dont know if it was the script,lack of direction or like Gal Gadot and her lack of acting skills.

  Well that is too bad for Paco's kids but every time I've seen this movie there have been children there. That's great that you like the Donner films, but that isn't the definitive Superman and would never work today.
