Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill, and producers give solo Superman movie update (video)

Back in October 2014 when Warner Bros. announced the DC Extended Universe, they mentioned that solo Batman and Superman movies were coming sometime before 2020. And while Ben Affleck's Batman movie is closer than ever, fans have been left in the dark in regards to Henry Cavill's next Superman movie. IGN caught up with Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill, and producer Charles Roven for an update.

Zack Snyder

"I think if we can get a good script it would be great to get a standalone Superman movie. I think that would be fun to do.

Henry Cavill

"I do believe it depends upon the success of [Batman v Superman]. If this goes well then we can start negotiating with Warner Bros. to develop a standalone Superman. But they've got their plans set out for other stuff and Justice Leagues and various other movies. It's about finding the time, really. It's something that I would be very keen to do."

Charles Roven

"We're in the process of looking at that, but we don't have it on the schedule at the moment because we're quite busy with the movies that we have scheduled."

It really pisses me off that there isn't a Man of Steel 2 already
announced. The first one made a profit in theatres! And then more on
home video and merchandising. So what if it wasn't as much as they
wanted? The studio isn't exactly churning out hits at the moment. They
could really use Man of Steel 2 to make a profit in theatres. They're
just being cowards and gun-shy about it as always.Cavill is perfect for the role but you don't want him to get too old before you use him fully. He's already showing signs of aging and they've only done two films with him.

I was about to say the same thing.
Whenever another Superman film takes place it sould resurect him as the most OPTIMISTIC beeing it the DC Universe... To make justice for the character... Who as been basicly crucified in the name of the DC God that is Batman...

  I agree. I think this is the perfect time to hit the "reset" button and give us that optimistic boy scout Supermam that we've been waiting for. A superman film where we get to actually see superman BELOVED on the big screen and they celebrate his return which will then lead into Superman helping found the justice league. I feel like they really dropped the ball in BvS with Supes, by the end he still wasn't the man we know and love but I think a solo Supesfilm could correct that, with a diff director of course. But I guess we'll see.
  I personally would've had done Man of Steel > Batman > BvS > Man of Steel 2 > JL > Man of steel 3 (w/ death of superman because by than I think this Superman would've earned that storyline and the comeback would've been all the more sweeter. You would've gotten to see him perform superheroics in 3-4 films)

    If they did that plan, how great would it have been if at the very end of The Batman, right when audiences think that Bruce is good and the movie is going to end, the electricity goes out and staticy Zod appears on screen as in MOS, and since we already saw MOS and know what happens, have BvS pick up as it does with Bruce getting into Metropolis during the attack. Thoughts?

      I like it :D, I think I actually would've even taken it a step further and have the beginning of the Solo Batman film start with the battle of metropolis and the film mostly being about the changes to Batman's psyche as he's dealing with the repercussions and his change in methodology handling criminals while at the same time he's struggling to figure out some sort of mystery/big crime that's going down in Gotham (just choose your pic of Bat stories lol) and than the end with him coming down to the final decision that he needs to take down Superman.
      I thought that the way it was done in BvS was a little quick. I understood that Bruce Wayne already had a problem with Supes after what went down but I thought the thing to push him over the edge was pretty silly since it obviously wasn't Superman's fault and EVERYONE knew it. I would've liked to stew with this batman a bit more into his descent.

      I think you have some good ideas and I think it would be interesting to see Batman change, however I think that would work better if we were talking about a television show rather than movies. Lots of people already haven't been able to handle Superman evolving over two movies, they probably wouldn't want a whole Batman solo movie like that.

      I actually don't think superman has evolved in two movies I think he's remained pretty stagnant through out both films now and that's why people have been throwing up their hands. He seems like the same superman he was in MOS to me.
      But the solo Batman film I was proposing would actually show the slow change leading up to BvS where he's completely different.

      I see. I just think if nothing else Superman in these movies has learned how to fight without causing tons of collateral damage. Lots of people have made fun about how in every location during the Doomsday fight someone commented about there being few, if any people there, but I don't think I've seen anyone make the point that rather than fighting again in the city, Superman took Doomsday out to space. I know that's not exactly the emotional evolution you might be talking about but it's still an evolution of the character.
      I also think we've seen an emotional evolution, it just hasn't been a stark change. Even just in BvS you have him going from seeming to agree with other people that this isn't his world, to changing his opinion, and giving his life to protect his world. I think it's harder to demonstrate the change within Superman because his inner turmoil doesn't necessary manifest in actions like Batman's inner conflict does. But you do have him, Superman, with the vision of his father questioning whether what he does is actually helping or causing more harm, and should he continue to be Superman.
      I think/hope that in JL we will see all of these issues within Superman be resolved and we will get the more hopeful Superman that a lot of people think we haven't seen yet. Which is funny because I've seen some people be upset with the ending of MOS because you go from him killing Zod to wrecking a drone and riding his bike to the Daily Planet. I would argue that change in tone was to start showing a more hopeful Superman, which then changed in BvS due to the criticism he was receiving.
      I understand what you are saying it just might be difficult to show that in one movie. Like if he starts to change after Robin's death do they tell that whole 'A Death in the Family' story first, and then something else to demonstrate the change? Do you start the movie with something else to show the interaction between the characters so that people have a greater reaction to the death? Do you include Superman's arrival which based on Alfred's comments seems to be one of, if not the main reason for this change in Batman's behavior? I just think there would be a lot to cover and a movie like that might suffer the same criticism BvS has gotten.

      Hmmm, I get what you mean but I think there is a way to have film about Batmam that focuses on somethingsmaller and close to home, not some end of the world type threat and Use things like flashbacks or Alfred alluding to things from the past to show the contrast between then and now. I feel like with BvS it was just TOO MUCH different threads and stories while for this all you would really need is 2 that could interweave and connect in the end. Like when there will be a Bat story where he's solving a case but at the same time he's remember his past and something from his past ends up connecting to the current case he's working on and while you have that going on your shown the different character moments between the past and the present. Overall I think that BvS had some nit great execution but I believe in the right hands thungs like that could work, of course I'm no writer but I believe as comic book writers we've all scene examples of it done right. I mean we all know that comics and film are two different mediums but people have been successful in translating pages to screen.

    Didn't they try that superman in superman returns? The boy scout superman is liked by critics but dislike mostly by fans. Im glad they gave him an edge. We dont need a boring superman let alone cheesy movies like Disney movies.

      I'm not saying he has to be a cheesy happy go lucky guy. But he doesn't even resemble the Superman of the animated series atleast. When all he does is constantly have a this air of the tragic sad hero about him it takes away from him having other sides to his personality. You can have a superman that's happy to do his job and take care of the whole world while at the same time having a layer of depth to him where he struggles with his critics. I liked what they did with Superman in MOS, I always stick up for that portrayel of him but it's time for them to take it a step further if they're saying that he's wasnt fully realized Supermam in that movie yet and I believed we'd be getting that in BvS. where as before people think he's flat and boring being a happy boy scout now I'm finding it flat and boring that he's just constantly trying to find himself I only got a glimmer of that in the scenes where he's being Clark Kent but it's too inconsistent.

    I agree. I think they should get over the whole people comparing them to Marvel thing. They're separate heroes in separate universes and that plan with solo films leading into team ups just works a lot better when you have a big cast of characters that you want people to love.

      Yea I definetly think that and I didn't think doing BvS and JLA so soon afterwards was a bad move but the execution I feel wasn't the best. When you hear the recent interview Collider has had with Deborah Synder, who's a producer on the film she even mentions how WB wanted them to have bits that connected this film to JL. I don't blame them because it helps get people excited for what's to come but I think it was definetly a studio move and not a director thing. It feels a bit thrown in there and not as organic as it should be.

      Totally agree. I definetly think the JL folder clicking thing would've worked much better if it was BATMAN looking at the files and it was a post credit scene.
      The Death of Superman thing felt so rushed. I feel like this Superman has yet to earn that glorified death that would make people truly mourn him. You're more like "wow they really went with that" instead of "wow I can't believe they killed superman." The citizens in the film had yet to truly love Supes and the audience had yet to be fully embraced by the general audience of these films for it to have the impact it should and because of that it feels like a wonderful storyline was just wasted for a bit of shock value.
      I got that it'd be so cool to have Batmam and Suoerman meet for the first time but than throwing in another HUGE classic storyline just felt like overkill.

  Oh, what I mean Is I would've just taken the death of Supes out of BvS, so he'd be alive in JL and than place it in his own solo film.
  I think I'm just worried about Zack and the team juggling multiple storyline at once. I think he did a far better job in MOS since they only had to do one thing. But I feel like BVS went off the rails with un-needed threads in what should've been a pretty straight forward story.

Ugh. and THIS is why WB just doesn´t get it right. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman should get their own franchises from the get go. Not wait for the numbers and then make it a maybe. Marvel already knew they would do a Captain America franchise before there was Avengers. Solo franchises for the biggest characters need to be a GIVEN, they should be the core pillars on which the shared universe is built.

      They poster didn't say for the sake of it at all. Also while Marvel gets some things wrong, guess what? They get a lot of things right as well. This is probably the only thing I think WB/DC should have copied off Marvel/Disney is doing standalones before BVS and/or making sure the the three most recognisable/iconic comic book characters on this planet have franchises in their own right.
      I get it we love DC, doesn't mean Marvel does everything wrong, their success is a symbol of that.

    I understand the Green Lantern omission. After the terrible solo movie in 2011 (which really isn't that long ago) and Deadpool practically making a big joke out of the character, it will take time for them to re-evaluate bringing him to the big screen again. He's on the schedule. There's just a whole lot else to do first.
    "Ezra Miller is a terrible choice as Flash" he says after not even seeing a trailer.
    People incapable of learning from (recent) history baffle me. After Heath Ledger, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Micheal Keaton and many others bashed without seeing them first, if you're not prepared to give actors a chance and have an open mind at this point then you're just, well, beyond help.
    Whatever your criticisms are of Zack Snyder, barring Lex Luthor's divisive reception nearly every casting choice he's made has been fantastic, from General Zod to Faora to Superman to Batman to Wonder Woman to arguably even Aqua Man if you've seen him on Game of Thrones and know what he can do.

the thing is, a Wonder Woman movie is already in the making, Batman has a plethora of movie in the past decade, and Superman dies at the end of Batman vs Superman, and his revival in the comics is in the Justice League ones so it wouldn't make sense to revive him in his own movie.       Right. A hero who suddenly cares about saving his Mom in a sequel because the director has ADD and keeps answering the direct criticism of MOS's Tornado fail is a wise decision. Superman's death was pathetic. A Turd murders him. Christopher Reeves was hokey, but people cared about him. And he didn't fly around glowering like an emo jerk when saving citizens. Only liking all Superman stories after 1992 doesn't make you a Superman fan. It's beyond LAME. Be dark all you want, but DC needs a real director.

      The approach they're going with regarding his character is that he's a guy who wants to live a normal life,but he also wants to help because of all these abilities he has.That's why he's confused and sad,since both his dads had different ideologies towards him.Pa Kent told him to lay low until he's ready and Jor-El told him to embrace the role of the savior.
      At the end of the day it's hard being Superman and that's why it takes time for him to wrap his mind around what he has to do.
      The dialogue between senator Finch and Charlie Rose kind of summed it pretty well:

      That's a future that may or may not happen.In my opinion,the Elseworlds stories are more interesting than the ones that are canon because they explore these characters in different ways.

  He felt that way in the last 30 minutes of the movie for me. Him saving Lex Luthor despite trying to fry his mother and giving his life are examples of that. On the course they're going I expect the next film to be him being a fully realized Superman. He won't be the rookie in MoS, or the hero who doubts his place through most of BvS.

As long as they have a good way to bring him back for JL,I'm down with that.I liked what they did with Supes in BvS,although some people didn't find him developed,but he does have an evolution in this film after the events in MoS.
A solo movie with him coming back to life would have been great too.The thing that bugs me a bit is that his story from the first part of the movie wasn't taken too far and it's a damn shame,because it had the potential to be the best Superman story put to film.The ideas they were exploring were really intriguing,so all I can hope for is seeing more of it in the Ultimate Cut.

      There is a small thing called "execution". People act as if Batman blowing up a car and driving straight through it is the same as Batman not saving someone (Ra's). Also, I always looked at Dent's death as more of an accident. In any case, it was a final resort. It was him or Gordon's family. They executed this HORRIBLY in BvS. The difference is incredibly huge. If you cannot see the difference, you're quite frankly refusing to accept reality.

      Because he is so scared of Superman. Like he said in the movie, he's good now. But what if he doesn't stay that way? This Batman is jaded and cynical after witnessing the death of Robin and presumably the fall of Two Face. Plus hundreds of his employees were killed in Zod's attack.
      Plus there is no prison on the planet that could hold him.

      Execution, mate. It really isn't anywhere near as black and white as you would so clearly like it to be. I don't get why people refuse to accept that reality is not always easy to understand. Those ninjas in BB, he had no intention of blowing up the monastery in the first place. If anything it was an accident. Flipping cop cars? Lol, you know for a fact they didn't die. Dent? Again, more of an accident than anything else plus he had to choose between Dent and Gordon's family, and don't forget that Dent was in control of the situation. Truck driver? I never ever assumed he died. Talia died because of her stubbornness. He shot the truck, but he didn't blow up the truck. It's stated in the film he was trying to prevent the truck from getting to its destination or something. it was more suppressive fire. Batman had NO play in Talia's truck crashing down. It was Talia who insisted on moving forward. Even if you were to convince me he really did "kill" her, the execution was still far better. They were carrying an atomic bomb. One life vs the whole city? Even Batman is not that stubborn. In BvS he shred that car to pieces and drove straight through it and then crashed unto the truck completely flattening a goon and at the end he blew up those cars yet again. What's the difference? Not in any of those scenes did Batman face any sort of real danger. Not enough? Batman was always the one in control in all those situations. Still not happy? He had no real reason to kill them in the first place. The one exception I am willing to make is Superman. because that transcends his rules. ("This is about the future of the world"). But all those helpless goons? He could've succeeded without killing one single goon.

      Stating facts is not reaching. If anything, you are reaching. Yes, it was his fault that the monastery caught on fire, but it was NOT his intention. His intention was never to kill. And that is a critical difference you ignore for the sake of having a valid argument. "How do we know they didn't die"? You're joking right? It's a movie, suspend your disbelief like you're meant to. It's generally accepted that Batman, while brutal, doesn't kill. That's like saying "Maybe he killed 67 guys in the Arkham games, I mean how do we KNOW? He could've accidentally broken their back without knowing". Yes, in a real world some of those goons in the games (or the cops in BB) would be long dead... But this is a fictional world. Truck driver was never shot in the chest. Never. He fainted, he didn't die.
      It doesn't matter what your view is when that contradicts reality.

      I'm genuinely happy people liked this film, if nothing else for the sake the DCCU's future. I never said it was a bad film, fact is I still enjoyed it (could have been way better) but there's a lot of good in the film. But Batman killing in BvS was just unacceptable and pretending like Bale's Batman did the same is wrong on every level.

      It has nothing to do with that. Bale's Batman never killed directly similar to Batfleck, except for maybe Dent, which was more of an accident. In BvS, he murders goons regularly for no real reason. Also, Bale's Batman was forced regularly to make life or death decisions. Batfleck was always in control and faced no immediate danger anywhere in the film except when facing Superman (kinda) and Doomsday. The situations couldn't be more different. You said it's the exact same thing? Not even close. In DKR, he shot a truck yes, but he didn't cause the driver to die, nor did the truck blow up NOR did he intentionally drive through the truck just for the sake of it. It was Talia who insisted on driving forward to literally and figuratively fall. She caused her own death.

      He shot the truck and the driver faints. Never did I think he killed him, also even if he truly were dead, Batman never shot him directly in the chest like you were saying. If he was dead, it was because of the impact. But again, I severely doubt that since his shooting was more suppressive fire. He didn't really hit the truck, hence why I always believed that goon didn't die.

If the cops survived in BB, if the goons survived in the tumbler just before this scene (hit directly by stronger and several missiles) then why can't I assume that driver actually survived? You can't prove he died anymore than I can prove he lived. That's why I said the execution matters. Let's say he died... It was his life vs the whole city.       Pathetic response (also you replied?). They were CLEARLY dead. You could see their deaths on screen. Blowing up a truck and driving through a shredded corpse excludes the possibility of possibly fainting. Kicking a goon into a grenade and actually seeing the explosion, shooting a gas tank and seeing that goon explode in fire. There is no chance of them surviving.

      The TDK Trilogy is littered with these examples, and don't get me started on the Arkham Games. That is the ultimate interpretation of Batman where he absolutely refuses to kill, yet there are thousands of examples where any normal goon should have died. (Never mind Grundy).
      It is accepted among viewers and readers that all these goons actually survive. Even if that is somewhat hard to believe.
      So please, tell me... Why exactly are you so sure that truck driver actually died? And AGAIN, even IF that was the case, that does not refute my argument.

If you actually read my comments, you'd know I'm not 100% he survived, I personally never thought of it that way, it always seemed logical to me he got knocked out by the blast. And considering the trilogy is FILLED with identical situations (where we know they all "survived") that seems to prove my perspective. But again, even if he died... That changes nothing and doesn't do anything to prove you right.

I don't want another divisive movie. Superman already gets shat on by normal audiences who don't understand the character and call him 'boring'.
I want people to actually get Superman. Considering most of them won't get into comics, movies end up being the best medium.
Captain America became super popular after the Winter Solider. I want MoS2 to have the same effect on Superman.

As Bat loyal as I am, Superman really needs to be the centrepiece of it all (though I think that of GL, MM, GA also etc). Though I was a bit underwhelmed by bvs, I felt Cavell was great in his redemption and sacrificial actions. But anyway yeah, supes has a great rogues gallery to explore (ones probably better suited chronologically than doomsday for bvs) I.e. Parasite, Bizzaro, Mettalo, Brainiac etc.

Do it WB ... No mos development is akin to marvel throwing Captain America under a train.

For Tomorrow might work. Honestly though, I'd love a Kingdom Come arc where Superman learns of the existence of a parallel Earth (Earth-2) akin to a Golden-Age iteration of the character. That would seriously make my life. ;)

I would love to see another Man of Steel film, with or without Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, and seeing how more challenges come for Superman and those he cares about. Maybe, had they done one more standalone before Batman V Superman, it would've made Batman V Superman even greater for others to enjoy what they were trying to do with it. Still, a second one needs to happen, Henry Cavill is great as Superman, and I would like to see him do one more if not a couple without the Justice League aspect.

This will eventually happen, specially after when he returns on Justice League. I just hope for they keep pushing the character, and the DC Films in general, to new places what really challenge the characters, to not stay closed into a canned format like ~other~ adaptations are doing for years now, and like some "critics" are said they should be. Let DC still allowd directos been directors, and to their best to translate the characters in their visions.

When that moment superman after having recovered from the nuke blast comes flying back to earth and hurls doomsday across. Or when wonder woman lasso glows; holy shit!

  Yup! Henry Cavill has said in recent interviews that the Superman character in this continuity is evolving into the classic Superman we all know and love. After he destroyed the world engine and snapped Zod's neck, he became a man. After he made the ultimate sacrifice in his battle with Doomsday, he became Superman. In Justice League, we'll see the fully formed, optimistic, inspiring, savior of earth. :-)

Yeah, I'm sure Warner Brothers will get right on that next Superman solo flick, in about two decades from now. LOL Cavill's a pretty charismatic dude. I desperately want to see him bring that to his Clark Kent and Superman role. Because holy crap was that Superman characterization boring, dry, and depressing, in BvS! (SPOILER ALERT) Supes needs to come back from the dead, with a brighter personality and an unwavering positive attitude. That's what makes the character special, unique, and appealing, outside of his superpowers.

Your Superman sounds a bit boring. A good story is based on some form of conflict, with your version there is no room for emotional conflict cause he is always so "happy to be of service". So that leaves mostly room for various forms of physical conflict and that can get tiring real quick with an all powerful godlike being. Besides, your Superman was in BvS when he found his real purpose... Just before he grabbed that spear and flew off. He realised that no matter what he would protect this earth. That is not a light conclusion one makes and it requires some soul searching.
Snyder made Superman interesting to me, I always found him the most boring member of the JL before Cavill took on the cape. Now I look forward to seeing this character, even when he becomes the always happy beacon of hope you described, because I know where that man came from.

  Of course he doesn't have to ALWAYS be happy. But he shouldn't be an emotionless Dr. Manhattan clone, either. There's a middle ground, a balance, that hopefully he'll show in future films. Sure he can have SOME internal conflict. But most of his adversity should come from the villain. Not from self-doubt, or hurt feelings, because he's misunderstood by haters.

    Have you and I watched the same movies? I never experienced him as emotionless. I saw him happy (Lois or that moment his mother breaks out in tears in MoS), sad (after the tea scene), angry (Zod, Luthor), playful (Lois again), scared (photos of his mom), worried (Doomsday) and many more. Might it be that you are so preoccupied with that Snyder's Superman is not (yet) the one you want that you only see the "bad" part?

Lol, Goyer is a horrible writer. And don't blame Terrio for the story in BvS. Terrio did the dialogue (which was factually a billion times better than Goyer's script), Snyder did the story. Superman's death, lack of ideological debate, no character motivations etc. Those came from one person: Snyder. Terrio just wrote the script that Snyder told him to make. I'm not kidding, Snyder literally said it would be way too stupid looking if Batman and Superman actually talked. (like, what the fuck). That's why there is absolutely no character development between them in the movie.

Except for the Martha scene, which I was personally a big fan of, but that wasn't really character development between them more so than Batman's arc in the movie coming to an end.
