Report: Warner Bros. is reshooting 'Suicide Squad' to make it more fun

A major issue that critics had with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was that it was too dark and wasn't "fun". According to a new report from Birth.Movies.Death, Suicide Squad won't have that problem.

Birth.Movies.Death's source says that Warner Bros. is reshooting some of Suicide Squad right now. Big reshoots too. This is going to cost them tens of millions of dollars. The purpose of the reshoots are to add more humor and lightness to the movie.

El Mayimbe backed up this report, and says the reshoots are taking place on the Paramount lot.

Suicide Squad already looked pretty fun according to the trailers, and that's a big reason for the reshoots. After the positive response to the last trailer, Warner Bros. suggested that director David Ayer should alter the tone a bit to include more of those fun moments. Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released on August 5th.

Here's the thing. Even if the story is true or partially true or could potentially be true or is an option that's on the table.. That doesn't mean the spin or speculation that certain bloggers want to attach to it is true. People need to better be able to distinguish actual reporting from agenda-driven editorializing. I wish bloggers were better at making this distinction clear to their readers, but that seems to go against current business models and trends, so it's up to the reader to do that work on their own, or just ignore it for what it is.

  There are a lot of comic book movies out there. I loved BvS because it wasn't as trivial or simplistic as some of the other ones I've seen (from my perspective). To me personally, it's depressing to see movies that are mindless and kind of basic and lowest common denominator, whereas emotional and challenging movies like BvS are more inspiring and make me happy, because they trigger a part of my brain and heart that I feel too many other Hollywood blockbusters aren't willing or able to reach. For me that is where the joy and fun comes from.
  I'm just glad the super hero genre is now large and popular enough that movies can have their own distinct tones and appeal to different people. There are some of them that I don't like, but that just means the movie isn't for me, not that there's anything wrong with it. Not every movie has to cater to my exact emotional and intellectual needs. That would be so boring, I'd probably need to take an antidepressant just to deal with the soul crushing banality of it all. But again, that's just me.

    And I like my superhero movies to have a coherent plot, questions that it actually answers, a villain's plan that makes sense, well written motivations and a 3rd act that isn't a CGI disaster. But that's just me.

      I respect your preferences and your viewpoint. I think we all go into these movies with specific needs and priorities.
      I personally loved the plot of BvS. I thought it was ingenious. Really made me pay attention and piece together Luthor's plans and motivations. It was refreshing that the movie didn't resort to standard villain monologuing to spell these things out, rather they just let the action speak for itself. I totally respect how this was probably incoherent or confusing to some people though. That's the risk the filmmakers were taken. I thought it paid off, but that's just me speaking for myself based on my own preferences and understanding of the movie as I saw it.
      I like questions that are left unanswered or open to interpretation. That's one reason the movie has resonated with me so much. I've spent the past week thinking about a lot of the themes and the questions that the movie asks. It's engaging. That's a reason I went back to see the movie and have plans to see it again. The mystery is very stimulating for me. When movies don't raise questions or have that mystery, I personally tend to forget about the movie as soon as I leave the theater, because it just comes across as disposable.
      The motivations for the characters were brilliant. They weren't explicit, but once the movie was over I knew exactly what the characters were trying to achieve and how they changed.
      Most superhero movies have a 3rd act with a lot of CGI. To me the emotionalism of the 3rd act made up for that and is what made it interesting.
      Not every movie has to cater to my exact emotional and intellectual needs, but I'm also joyful when a movie like Batman v Superman comes around that hits my sweet spot. My comic book movie itch has been scratched thoroughly.
      And when a movie doesn't meet my needs, it doesn't mean the movie isn't coherent or joyless, it just means the movie isn't for me. (You probably don't want to hear my opinions on Force Awakens...)

I kind of agree. Some people won't be pleased no matter what. Either they'll complain the movie is too weird and that WB needs to be punished for not respecting exactly what 'fans' want to see, or they'll complain that WB is pulling their punches and playing it too safe in order to pander to fans.
People are really fickle nowadays. I personally think it's a normal response to the upheaval that's going on within the film industry but also with the rest of the world. Interesting to think about, but nothing any of us have much power or control over as individuals. :)

I already liked the humor shown in the trailer, I don't think they need to liven it up anymore. I'm sure the original cut was already much funnier than BvS

Maybe it's fake, maybe it's not? Kind of like the reports coming out that Warner Bros.' were worried about BvS before its release. If it is true, I think it's a huge mistake. Six months between now and release isn't a lot of time for set building, re-shooting, and editing.
There's a reason you gave Ayer a chance at this film, and his darkish style was probably part of that. The problems with BvS had little to do with it being "dark." The problems were with editing, plot, script, and as much as I hate to say it (because he is a great comicbook director) Zack Snyder having WAY too much control of this film. This, it's too dark, it takes itself too seriously, it's no fun, is a movement mainly by critics (who have it out for Snyder regardless of what he does) and the people who only enjoy what Marvel has done. Punishing Ayer for the sins of Snyder isn't fair and essentially betrays what you saw in him in the first place.
It sounds like the Schumacher mistake all over again. SS was most likely shot with plenty of humor, it'd have to be, otherwise it wouldn't be a SS film. Hopefully, they're not swapping the dark humor for light-hearted one-liners. I guess we'll see...

  Yeah, I think there was enough dissension among the studio that a rumor like this seems plausible, but I hope it's not true. Crossing that billion-dollar-mark would alleviate a lot of their concerns.

Seeing photos of Martha Kent where it looks like she her eyelids slit and a rope around her mouth that makes it look like she has a glascow smile isn't fun. Seeing Batman murder 30 people with guns isn't fun.

  I thought those scenes were pretty hot actually. As a huge DC fan, that's how I like to see all my women. Sort of like the early wonder woman comics, but with a modern twist.

  How about the part in The Dark Knight where Two-Face kidnaps Gordon's family and threatens to murder his young son. Was that fun? Or when the woman that Batman loved gets blown up in a warehouse, was that fun too? Funny how no one attacks The dark knight saga for not being "fun". Why does a Batman movie need to be "fun"? Batman's not a fun character, it completely misses the point. If you want a "fun" Batman movie, go watch Batman and Robin or some nippled-Batsuit shit.

Nothing wrong with dark and gritty. I don't need to laugh to enjoy a film. You'll see me crack a smile from Batman beating up a room of thugs.

This just sounds made up, not that there would be re-shoots (every movie does) but the fact that this the reason for them to do so. This just sounds more like people trying to pile on the criticism of batman v superman being too dark, and trying to make a bigger deal out of a common practice in filmmaking.

  That link to the Independent completely misinterpreted their source at Deadline. The source said that's how much the film would have to make to break even on box office alone. The linked story said the film would have to gross that to stand a chance of breaking even. Big difference.

Humor? Sure, preferably dark humor. Lightness? No. Honestly, while I have big issues with Snyder's talent, I feel like Warner Bros also has some big issues to address. They refused to release a three hour cut of BvS, a cut that was being worked on until just a couple of months before release. It may have been the reason for such a messy film, cutting out scenes that were pivotal to the organic flow of the story. Now, they're getting shaky feet with Suicide Squad because of the darkness of BvS? That was not the problem with BvS, it was just a messy film that had one of the worst pacing and editing I've ever seen. I feel like that was the main reason why people didn't respond to it as well as they were hoping. They simple couldn't enjoy it with the amount of jumping that film had. Of course there are folks who would like to have a more Christopher Reeve type Superman but let's make a good film with the tone of what they have right now before shock waving lightness through their other films.

  I think it's because most of the critics would have tolerated the story problems like Batman's Apoklips dream happening out of nowhere and ending with the Flash warning him (which would have made more sense if those two scenes were switched), had it gone for a more light hearted tone like say Avengers: Age of Ultron, another movie that had similar issues.

      WB is one of the few (only?) studios that still grants a relative amount of "total artistic control" to their filmmakers. After artist-driven, expensive blockbusters like Fury Road underperformed at the box office and BvS underperformed with critics, WB might be making some changes to put them more in line with other studios. Some fanboys and bloggers actually seem eager to see that happen, if it gives them more control over the process. If you're sighing, just keep in mind the bigger picture and the context for all of this. :)
