on 'Batman v Superman' director's cut has been rated R by the MPAA

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has put out a bulletin highlighting movies that they've recently rated, and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition" has been rated R for "sequences of violence." The distributor is "Warner Home Entertainment", so it sounds like we're getting an extended director's cut Blu-ray from Zack Snyder!

There's even a note that reads "EDITED VERSION. CONTENT IS DIFFERENT FROM PG-13 VERSION, BULLETIN NO. 2393 (9/30/15)." Big thanks to @StitchKingdom for the heads up and spotting the news first.

Coincidentally, we just discussed the possibility of an R-rated Batman movie on the Batman News podcast. Never imagined it would happen! This is very surprising news. I guess Superman will bleed. A lot!

        because it was CGI and out of focus. remember Expendables 3 was PG-13.

          ooh, that's actually kind of an easter egg, the big guy is named "Namek the Beheader" and he just beheaded the poor pilot with one hand.

          No he jumps on the chopper which already does some damage, he squeezes the pilots neck and basically his head explodes.

            The rest of his body is obliterated into ash immediately after his head comes off without even hitting any major component of the aircraft. Kryptonians are cold mofos.

      I bet this R cut is the original cut, but they had to edit it down to get a PG-13 rating.

      This R version of BVS was submitted to the MPAA 5 months ago to get that rating. It was already put together exactly as this many months before Deadpool was released. Unless Snyder had a time machine back in September to go into the future and find out that Deadpool would be a gigantic success then re-edit his film, 5 months ago, then no, this has nothing to do with Deadpool. Deadpool was a pretty awesome movie that I enjoyed a lot, but look at the date September 30, 2015 and use your common sense. They submitted this R version and the theatrical cut, so they were planning to do something with both versions long before Deadpool.

      None of them would be R rated in the theatrical run for sure. This is something extra just for the fans. He did say that we may get almost a 4 hour movie. Snyder is known for long director cuts. Watchmen ultimate cut was 215 minutes long! Hope this directors cut is 3.5 hours. I would die happy after I saw it lol

    Well, not that it's a direct adaptation but there were plenty of elements of The Dark Knight Returns that are definitely R rated. Maybe there will be some similar action scenes!

      Joker may well be in the extended cut (flashback with Jason Todd comes to mind), maybe they even happened to manage a Killing Joke flashback sequence involving Jena Malone but it got cut cause, you know.

    So wait, first there IS a Director's Cut (!!!), and then it's rated R. Is someone trolling us? Because the idea of a director's cut alone is awesome, but Rated R? How brutal is Batman? Watchmen levels?

    come to think of it, nearly all of Snyders films have an R rated cut - Dawn of the Dead, 300, watchmen, sucker punch....and almost all of them have a directors cut except 300 and Man of Steel. In fact Man of Steel is the only Snyder movie who does not have a R-rated version.

      the R rated cut will only be released on blu ray, not in cinemas so it won´t do much difference. Besides Marvel just did a R rated movie - the most successfull R rated movie of all time I might add.

        Deadpool was still produced by MARVEL Entertainment. Its still a Marvel character, And Marvel still makes a lot of money from that movie. Fox holds the rights but it´s still a Marvel movie.
