Last week HitFix reported that Warner Bros. was worried about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the internet freaked out! Now a second source, Batman on Film, backs up that story, but for a different reason.

According to BOF, Warner Bros. is indeed concerned about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but not because of the quality of the movie. They're more concerned about how the audience will respond to it, and how it will perform at the box office. BOF speculates that the mainstream audience is used to the "popcorn" movies that Marvel produces, and won't respond well to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's deep story, which was written by Oscar winner Chris Terrio.

All of this concern is understandable. Warner Bros. has a lot riding on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. If it's not a success, the future of DC Comics movies, including Justice League, could be at risk.

    The same company that had a team of 12 people to do the port of arkham knight to pc when this video game alone was a best seller, but they don't wanna invest in the pc version because *hurr durr* high profits hurt durr.
    the same company that couldn't give any of the justice league members a fucking background history to make the synergy between actor-character a good fucking one like Robert Downey-Iron man; marvel invested in 2 iron man movies, 1 captain america and 1 thor, creating expectation to the avengers movie because they´ve already created a cinematic history to all viewers, not just comic book readers, which is the reason why avengers broke records in box-office.
    They just put in a mixer the principal dc heroes including somewhat doomsday and lex luthor, not giving any background about Gal Gadots Wonder Woman, or Batfleck, creating no expectation for the actors at all to normal viewers who actually are the ones that make a movie rise in the box-office
    This movie is not deep or intelligent at all, not because Zack Shitsneider copy the dark theme of Nolan´s movie means intelligent or deep script, in fact for what we know is cliché-ish af.
    And its a shame because I love Henry Cavill as Superman, and Affleck as batman and maybe Alfred, the rest is just bad casting. SHAME ON WB.

      Dude have you completely forgotten about lord of the ring and harry potter that does not rely on solo film to build up the so called background history?? Plus those 2 movie I mention are also handle by WB. So in a way WB already have experience in handling the ensemble types of movie.

        And that's their problem, they don't understand comic books and how they sell, in Harry potter you get a boy who lives under a staircase and his evolvement relies entirely in the characters around him, without Dumbledore, Hagrid, Ron, Hermione, Harry Potter is not a thing at all. we get hyped with the awesomeness of these superhero characters alone, they should have believed in superman and make a good part 2.

        News flash comic book movie can also be made in the same way as how the lord of the ring is made. WB don have to follow exactly what marvel is doing. Plus DC character also are alot different than marvel character as well therefore there need to be a different approaches on these characters

        there is no rules of course, but if this movie goes bad at box-office, they're gonna blame the stupidness of people for not understanding the "deepness" of their movie, when in fact, they should blame themselves and their stupid richman-i-dont-know-shit-about-comics decisions.
        Its not about how batman is too dark, its about how you make public get involved with the character their creating, the whole persona (character/actor).
        And you´re wrong about being different characters, Justice league characters deserve a movie history more than stupid antman, and if they actually did they would have won more public than marvel, but they don't believe in the richness of DC universe.

        Ive always liked to have thought I stayed away from the whole pro marvel, crap on DC comic book fan discussion but bro!... Just be happy WB/DC are even doing this. If you have such a great understanding of characterisation and cinema then you go and make a million dollar comic book movie. See how much you like spending someone else money only for you to deliver. If you're a true fan you would support. End of.
        If its not your vision of something you love then thats fine to be upset about it. But don't expect everyone else to succumb to your outlook by expressing negativity.
        Ultimately if you want DC to succeed, stop spreading negativity and go watch the film at a theatre and enjoy and support the creative talent and direction. That is what any fan would do.

        Well, they put all their hopes and million of dollars in Zack Snyder, the director of the SUPER-incredible-mega-fascinating sucker punch.... but, why not put in someone who actually loves DC heroes and have experience. but whatever, just don't blame the viewers if this movie flops.

        The same director that directed the 4th biggest domestic comic book origin story of all time. Say what you want about Synder but he loves comics as much as the next person. You only have to watch Watchmen and 300 for that.
        The truth is, a hell of lot of people loved MoS...the majority of those than didn't, will see this anyway.

        I'm fine with TV history. The Flash TV series has been more fulfilling to me than any Marvel Movie that's come out in the last decade.
        But I admit I have a bias for TV series vs movies. Movies are just too rushed and tens to focus on effects and bling rather than good writing and taking the time to properly develop a story.

        You're talking out of your ass. You think you have the formula down on how to build a comic book movie universe? You don't. You're just describing what Marvel did and assuming that's a formula that works every time. (It doesn't)
        How well did Wolverine's Origin movie work for him? Not at all.
        DC can do its thing and we'll see how it goes. The box office will be the judge. I'm willing to bet that Batmam V Superman will handily trounce Dead pool or any recent Marvel movie into the dust even with bad reviews.

      Kinda missing the point.
      I love what Marvel has done as much as the next Comic book fan but lets talk reality here. They HAD to have separate movies for Iron-Man, Cap, Thor as nobody outside the comic book world knew who the hell they were. The only one of the Avengers that the general worldwide public knew about was Hulk, and they really didn’t know what to do with him. Stop somebody in Europe and ask them the origin story of Cap, Iron-Man and Thor pre the films, and you’d be met with dumbfounded looks.
      Now contrast with Batman and Superman. Ask the same people. The number that know about Superman and Batman’s origin would be far greater. The WB don’t need to do an origin for Batman. They do for Wonder Woman (hence why we’re getting one). They do need to flesh out the world (hence Suicide Squad). This whole film is that first interaction between the Trinity. It’s not the Justice League. It’s the start of it. Its creating that respect between Batman and Superman. Its creating that tension. Let’s not forget that a “good” Batman movie does $1billion on its own.
      By the time JL lands we would have had 4 DC movies. That’s not far off what Marvel had anyway.
      Not arguing on the Arkham Knight PC front – that was unforgivable. However, if they really wanted to make the bucket load of money, they would have released it on XB360 and PS3 as well. They took the decision to make it next gen only, therefore knowing losing millions of $s in revenue to make the best game they could. And it was the right thing to do…they should have just canned the PC version.

  I feel Suicide Squad is the risk that's going to pay off. It'll be WB Deadpool. In a sense that the Jared leto naysayers will be shut up.
  And Margot Robbie will make Harley Quinn a must for all future Batman films.
  But Chris Terrio did write the story... It's like how Inception had a bunch of morons calling it bad...

      It'll be a transfer. The majority will stand behind Leto and the nostalgia fans will follow Nicholson and the TDK "Batman fans" will claim it's Ledger.
      His look... Is badass, and those suits are too epic to be ignored.

Good, I want them to be taking risks and being different than MCU. We already have popcorn comic movies with little depth and they're fun but WB needs to do something to set themselves apart or they'll lose the passionate DC base that is going to support this thing. Maybe it won't make as much money but it sure as hell will be more likely to win awards and be critically acclaimed. Being nervous is a great sign, have faith WB!

I can see the movie making a billion, but to be fair, I don't think that is WB/DC's goal. Its not really their goal for most of their films. They really do make mostly thought provoking films that they dangle as oscar bait or that they think will

        Most movies don't make transformers money because audiences don't want anything deeper than that run-and-smash, me good guy you bad guy drivel. It's sad but a reality. Most people are dumb and that's what they go for. Essentially transformers movies are the perfect consumer product and that's why they've already greenlit 3 more Transformers sequels. I don't expect BVS to make transformers money because I respect the BvS audience more even if it amounts to 800 million instead of 1.5 billion

        Thats what I'm thinking. 800 million in ticket sales and artistic critical acclaim I think is a much better move in the long run especially when you factor in future movies, dvd/blu-ray sales and more. That's alot of money there, especially if their secnd film is critically acclaimed

This seems more plausible than the previous one, but it also makes me wish a lot of journalists (not including you in this Chris, love your site) didn't turn to click-bait. This truly isn't even a problem, it's basically common sense. Anyone would be worried about a movie that has so much riding on it.
Heck, there were worries about Star Wars and we all know how that turned out.

I'm still suprised at how much traction this gained. But also dissapointed in how furious and digusting some of the comments were that were directed at the guy from Hitflix. I get that people are passionate about BvS but eveyone just needs to calm down and wait and see. Drew st Hitflix saidwhat he's heard about the film is causing him to sweat and Bill from BOF said he's heard great tjungs, at this point eveything is a matter of opinion. At this point all we can do is enjoy the hype for the film, allow ourselves to still be excited and form our own opinions on opening night.

    That's not really a problem, because no one can exactly back up their sources. Bill on Batman-on-Film didn't name his sources that said the film was "great". If Drew was to name people in the industry that probably work at WB that gave him any kind of information, they could get fired. No one ever names sources for industry scoops. That could cause people to lose their jobs...

  I doubt any real source would say bullshit like they would need $1 billion to keep their jobs from BvS yet are still making more movies (Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad) before the film comes out. Or that there isn't a hand guiding this whole thing, while Snyder and his wife, Charles Roven and Geoff Johns are executive producers for every movie. Can WB be scared? Yes, but not to the extent that person was making it out to be.

  We know why the Dark Knight did one billion, it being batman and ledger's death. TDKR did 1billion based on the continuation of the story after ledger. Both great movies to me, but those are basically facts

      heres a simple metaphor for you. in 1993, when Jordan retired, the bulls viewership skyrocketed because people wanted to see what a Jordan-less bulls would do. That being said, the Bulls earned more money without Jordan than with him just because people wanted to see what happened. But the Bulls lost the conference finals to the knicks, who were a lesser team. See what I'm saying here?

        Jordan's impact is comparable to batman, and I'm talking things in the same vein, viewership. If you can't see that, then yes, you are dense. The jordan led bulls made the nba billions in the 90's, ledger sold tdk. Their successors were good(Pippen led bulls won around 55 games and TDKR mad a billion) But were not as good as the predecessor. Ledger in his role as the joker was the jordan of that story. People wanted to see the continuing story of Batman/Bulls and the impact of these two people on their respective franchise. were so great that even more people watched.
        Now , please elucidate your thoughts so I can inject statistical evidence to further corroborate my findings.

        There was a compelling storyline in the public consciousness of drama and intrigue and "what will they do now?" That brought all kinds of media spotlight and diner conversations in the masses, with people then watching the dark knight who otherwise wouldn't have, because ledger's death became a culturally significant event and it brought heaps of added attention to the next Batman movie with people playing attention that never had been before, because of Ledgers death. So yes, he's right that a huge boost in sales happened specifically because of that.

        1993 Bulls/Suns finals averaged 27.209 million viewers. The 1994 Houston/New York finals averaged 17.253 million viewers & the 1995 Houston/Orlando finals averaged 20.078 million viewers. Then 1996-1998 were 24.858, 25.586 & 29.040. Since then no NBA finals has hit 20 million viewers. So no idea what you are talking about.

I directly imply that the bulls were watched over the season more than any other team and made the nba billions throughout the 90's. Obviously a finals that has MJ in was going to wreck in Views. So you have obviously misread.

Also, it was the 1992/93 season where the bulls made the finals, not 93, because Jordan did not play in 93 and the Pippen led bulls were eliminated in the conference finals by the New York Knicks, which I do mention. In the 93-94 season the Houston Rockets went to the finals and beat the knicks in seven games.
        Stick to comics my g, you can't talk to me about sports. But again, Nice try.

      I think it's time we as human beings admit that rotten tomatoes is a rotten way of comparing films. It's so dependent of people's feelings, time of year and demographics. its really not reliable. I'm pretty sure people who hate on films are more likely to put their review than people who love it.
      That said sometimes I like putting my reviews there for some reason.

        I would have to agree,. And I think Blade Runner was panned. Easily an example of something happening too soon. If Watchmen came out in 2014, before age of Ultron, when this superhero fatigue talk started, it'd have like a 85-90 percent on RT. Because Watchmen is essentially about Superhero Fatigue, for the people and for the heroes.

Pretty sad when WB has to worry whether its movie is too smart for consumers. I say bring it on. I'm definitely going to say, though, assuming the storytelling is as brilliant as we are hearing, if Snyder can seamlessly weave that depth with the kick-ass action, he is owed several million apologies from the haters.

  I agree 100%. We hear all about "superhero fatigue" -- which obviously doesn't exist if the box office performance for "Deadpool" is anything to go by -- and so if a superhero franchise is going to be viable, it's got to set itself apart. If you watch that final trailer, you know without a doubt that this is distinctly different from what Marvel's doing. And I think there's a value in that uniqueness that we shouldn't underestimate.

EVERYONE REST EASY! The film will be good. I believe with the talent in front of and behind the camera. From set designers to the writers and directors we will be in for a true treat that will rival some of the best comic book movie stories. I completely believe that it will be smarter and darker than most comic book films. So yes I see how they can be worried because of the extreme hype and expectations. It won't be a fluff and ohh ahh type film. It will be a type of film we can peel back layer after layer of story and politics and so on. Can't wait.

Its an extremely sad affair when a studio has to worry bout a film being too good. People are too attuned to Marvel fares. Even a simple and straight-forward superhero film like Deadpool can make a killing.
WB left a time-gap too long and ironically the purpose of the extra time is too make the film better.

alright, If this is true I can live with it. So the entire movie is deep and thought provoking and we're still getting all these glorious action beats we've seen in the trailers, k.
What makes me think this is either ALL BS, or damage control, is that The Dark Knight had the greatest philosophical undertones for a CBM yet, from what I remember... I think the movie did hmmm, okay at the box office?
Therefore these supposed fears for BvS aren't really valid.
If the movie IS deep and all that, don't worry about it WB.
The masses will flock to the theaters just to see this

Actually, you have to care, cause those Marvel fans can generate the negative hype. They will bring down the scores, and your average movie goers, seeing it, will have doubts about going to watch the movie.

    Yes, and no movie production company wants a significant cross section of its online speaking demographic to be negative about a movie like this because it affects bottom line. Some people are primarily Marvel fans because coming up as little kids that's what they were most exposed to. They don't know any better. To be honest I most respect fans that can admit both movie production companies have put out quality movies like Batman Begins and Captain America: TWS are both excellent movies in different ways. If people get out of the high school jock type mentality of we're better than them, us vs. them. Away team boooo, polarized attitude then the best movies will be recognized... And when that happens I'm sure DC will do well regardless of established Marvel public built-in fanbase.

      That's NOT the reason Marvel fans are critical about. They are critical of the fact that DC is OWNED by Warner Bros. and other than Nolan or Burton's Batman nothing has been handled right. Green Lantern - DUMB, Jonah Hex - bomb, should've been a Western like an Eastwood movie. They are reacting because ALL of the sudden, DC/Warner have this whole Universe franchise suddenly appear? Why? Because of Marvel's success. Marvel, let me remind you, created their OWN studio to do this and weren't guaranteed success either. They took a B stringer character, Iron Man and it worked. They had a plan, and if it didn't work, we wouldn't be seeing any of these other films..... But DC is merely riding on the coat tails of a genre that Marvel made successful. And when that happens we get Shadow, The Phantom, Darkman or Relic, Laser Blast - all films that tried to cash in on Burton's Batman, or Alien or Star Wars that failed and only succeeded in failure. Remember Fraser's The Mummy? After that film, every other monster started doing the drop-jaw elongated scream..... those of the facts. I am a Marvel fan, but I have hopes of DC doing the same. It's just the timing and speed that is suspicious. Suicide Squad now uses classic rock to push the new trailer....hmmm, Guardians of the Galaxy rip-off? Not to mention taking a property that is unknown to the public like Marvel's GOTG and releasing it in August? Those are facts that can't be ignored. We have ALL seen how one film's success leads to an avalanche of imitators trying to cash in. So understand, Marvel fans don't hate DC, they just point out that there are problems. Just like they didn't like Age of Ultron. They DO speak out and criticize Marvel as well. I was also underwhlemed by AOU as was my daughter who is a huge fan. She is a fan of the genre just like we all are. And at some point if DC proves successful the reward for ALL of is a crossover between DC and MArvel, FOR SURE!!! That is something we can ALL agree would be a HUGE HIT!!

    I don't believe that to be true. Comic fans make an extremely small percentage of the overall audience. The word of mouth through social media from regular folks will make or break any movie. It does not matter what a small contingent of folks say, good or bad, in blogs that cater to a specific audience. The movie will stand or fall on its own merits. And as I can see -both sides of the fandom are guilty of spreading negativity. Just read down further in the comments. People here are just as guilty as the ones they charge when it comes to speaking bad about this supposed 'rivalry'.
    I want BvS to succeed, It helps the genre and helps everyone to raise their game. I want the variety that each studio can bring to a CBM. We should want ALL CBM's to succeed -not just the properties we have a vested interest in..

      Comic book sales are now reaching around 1 Billion Dollars per year. So you can go ahead and think they are an extremely small percentage of movie goers. I would say that the average guy has bought more than 1 comic book...and the average woman is becoming more interested in them because of the movies. A Billion Dollars and the average price of a comic book is $4. So that is 250 Million comic books sold. And the average comic book is not read by just one person. This is per year mind you, and not all time. Sooo...chew on that a bit before you suggest comic book fans are an extremely small percentage of overall audience. They probably wouldn't bother making these gigantic cinematic universes if that was true. And who do you think drags his/her friends and family to the movie theaters?

        Unfortunately, that is not the case. As someone who has been a comic retailer for thirty years, I can say that comic book sales have been sinking for decades. Comic book movies are hot commodities, but little cross pollination exists, much to the dismay of many retailers. What the above poster said is 100% accurate: B vs S's (and really any comic book movie) success or failure will be decided by the non fan movie going audience. These movies are never made exclusively for hard core fans, but rather to appeal to a wide audience

        Look it up...I don't state things that aren't true. I looked up comic book sales in North America...it didn't have the 2015 numbers, but the 2014 numbers were 900+million. They only go up year after year. I, personally, order all my comic books from Amazon. A good friend of mine owned his own comic book and card store in British Columbia, Canada. He had serious problems selling sports cards, so he went to game cards...like Magic The Gathering. He had his business for over 20 years but he eventually had to close down. People, in general, are like me. If you can order something off your computer, and something from a massive library that you can easily find, why the hell would you go to a comic book store? Plus nobody really touches it before it gets to you. In the comic book store everyones grubby hands have been on it. Since all these Superhero movies have come out, I can only imagine it has helped comic sales.

      The thing is with MOS reviews is that they were reviewed by people whose only knowledge of Superman is from the Initial Donner films. In those films Superman was already established and it missed his development into superman. Additionally some of his personality existed only in the film. Like his clumsy Clark persona. generally Those initial films was a fraction of who superman was. We comic book fans being more knowledgeable would appreciate the coming of age (super hero) Man of Steel had to offer. Most of the critics didn't like this version of superman, a superman who had real issues and was not a perfect deity, Even though it is closer to the superman in recent comics and cartoons.

        I'm a fan of both Donner films & the comics & man of steel was not a good movie. It was average at best. It was poor storytelling & plot holes galore. That's why it had a sharp decline in the box office after opening weekend

Bigger question is, what is their financial benchmark for being worried? Are they worried about hitting the 1 billion mark? 1.3? 1.5? etc.
And also, how would anything change if they grossed very well but didn't do so well critically, or if it grossed adequately but did very well critically (which seems unlikely if it does well critically {fans included})?

    That's interesting. I think it depends on how well it goes overseas. It's tracked for 154 opening, this far out, similar to how Deadpool was tracked for 75 but ended up at 130 or so. So maybe BvS ends up somewhere around 200, does maybe 450 domestic. & we've already seen 600+ from the dark knight movies, and close to 400 from man of steel alone internationally so it has a very good shot of beating TDKR.

      People continue to underestimate Chinas love for these characters. Im an american living in China and man, they like the marvel characters, but these kids know batman supes and wondy. All of their shows come on chinese television and kids actively seach for them on the net. I think BVS will make an absurd amount of money in asia

        I definitely agree that they're huge, I just wanted to keep my thoughts grounded in what we've seen so far, or else I wouldn't know where to start with the estimate. The Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises both did 600+ overseas, which I can see happening again here, even as high as 800. However, Man of Steel only did 377 overseas so hopefully the more Batman centric theme helps level that.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say FFS. This is just getting stupid at this point.
As fans and the people that keep sites like HitFix in business, we should start demanding higher standards of journalism and reporting, or just start ignoring the sites that aren't worth our time. Reading McWeeny's 'reporting' it's hard to tell how much of it is his own conjecture and how much of it is an accurate description of what his source said, which is even more problematic because there's no indication of who his source is, how reliable that source is, or if he has independently verified the claims with additional sources. I get this is just 'fanboy journalism' and shouldn't be taken seriously, but if we aren't supposed to take it seriously, why even pay attention to it in the first place?
It's just bad reporting. McWeeny didn't provide good information, or context, or even enough information to make an informed opinion about what's going on. That's why the internet freaked out.

  I'll join you hahaha I was trying to calculate that myself the other night -- how many times I would have to see it for them to make a billion. I'm sure they're going to make it easily. Somehow everyone seems to forget this is literally one of the biggest movies ever -- featuring two of the most iconic characters in American pop culture. We shouldn't underestimate what a draw that really is. I can't imagine it not making at least a billion.
