'Batman v Superman' producer talks about the DCEU, hints at origin stories (video)

Charles Roven has produced Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, and he's on board for every movie in the new DC Extended Universe, starting with Man of Steel.

In an exclusive interview with Collider, Roven talked about the "Brain Trust" that plans out the entire DCEU. The Brain Trust includes Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Geoff Johns, and John Berg, who is the executive vice president at Warner Bros.

Roven also seemed to hint that some of the solo movies in the DCEU could be prequels and origin stories. Here's what he had to say:

"So if, for example, The Flash movie or the Aquaman film is gonna come out after Justice League 1, it’s not gonna be a completely different character; that character will have evolved from Justice League 1. Wonder Woman, when we see her in Justice League 1, will have evolved from Batman v Superman. Unless we decide that in one of these stories we’re gonna do something that happened in the past and have it be more of an origination story, in which case you’ll realize how that character became what they were in the movie that they were first introduced."

I think it'd be cool to have flash come in at the end of dawn of justice through a time warp all distressed and worn out from the future with a few futuristic looking bad guys while beating them down. He came to the past to warn batman wonder woman and superman of things to come.

      If you're talking about the IMAX trailer #2 extra 1-sec scene, then No, that's not the flash, it was just dirt flying from Wonder Woman skidding after taking a hit from the mysteries villain. There's absolutely no Flash hints in the trailer.

I really hope they just up the ante a bit for the rest of their director picks. I really enjoy Ayer's films for the most part, and Patty Jenkins is still an unknown factor to this point (one good movie, but hasn't done much else at all), and even though I'd prefer another director, James Wan is generally good enough when it comes to the blockbuster fare (FF8 excluded), and we obviously have one of the best directors out there to direct the next Batman. But choosing the writer of Pride, Prejudice and Zombies to direct/write The Flash? Weird pick. I really want some mind blowing directors to make this universe the best it can possibly be, since Warners gives them more freedom, or is trying to.
It's not that I don't like Snyder, but if he doesn't have a good writer working with him (which he thankfully got with Terrio) his stories are usually very lackluster. Also, if they are deadset on making Cyborg, please get Ryan Coogler to direct/write it. I seriously cannot think of a better choice.

Ayer is an auteur, and I'm definitely confident about Patty even though she has only one Oscar winning film in her repertoire. Look at Ang Lee, he gave an Oscar winning movie 12 years after Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I'm not happy about the Flash writer, but who says Snyder is bad at stories? Dawn of the Dead? What could you possibly find wrong with Watchmen? Only Sucker Punch was bad. Man Of Steel had a great narrative despite David Goyer's shortcomings.
Are you aware of the talent behind DC's Vertigo slate? Neil Gaiman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Sandman), Tom Hardy (100 Bullets), Guillermo Del Toro, Scott Rudin (Justice League Dark), Nikolaj Arcel (Fables).

  Del Toro dropped out after submitting his script for JL: Dark. The movie will use Del Toro's script. WB is yet to find a director though.

  Don't get me wrong. Patty Jenkins directed an oscar winning role, which is something that gives credit to directors, no doubt. It's just that she has barely done anything since then, so it's difficult to judge her ability yet.
  Snyder has a storyteller himself is good at coming up with stories, but not so great at writing the story himself. Character Development and Characterization is something that most of his movies lack, unfortunately. But he does have Terrio now, which is a great thing, no doubt. I really like most Ayer's movies, except Sabotage which he got very little time to work on, so I'm good there!
  And yeah! I'm all in for their vertigo team! Scott Rudin is freaking awesome, and I wish that Guillermo Del Toro would just stick to one of his projects and make Justice League Dark himself, besides only writing the script. What I mean is that I just want some mind blowing choices for directors/writers to push this genre (which is definitely staling) forward. David Fincher, James Cameron, Peter Jackson (although faith is running low on this one), Richard Linklater (would probably make the most well written super hero movie of all time), Alfonso Cuaron (for the Man of Steel sequel), Brad Bird (for a superman movie also, or Shazam), and hell, give Wes Anderson a Secret Six movie, and the obvious choices that everyone would instantly die for like Coen Bros. or freaking Scorsese!

      Great! I did suggest Neil Blomkamp for the Cyborg movie once. I only pray that WB doesn't give the Wachowski's a DC movie. Also Alfonso Cuaron may be a good choice.

    Sometimes a new director with the right vision for that particular film is the best choice rather than a big name.
    I know for fans it's a lot more comforting when we see a reliable director with a good track record penciled in to do one of these films, but sometimes someone new and hungry with the right vision end up being the best possible choice.
    I do like the idea of hiring Brad Bird though. Ayer was a great hire. Snyder has many critics but his vision for these type of films is what sets him apart from a lot of directors. He just needs the right script and story and from the looks of it Chris Terrio is someone we can depend on to deliver a good script.
    Affleck directing future Batman solos will be interesting. He has quickly become one of the best directors today in terms of telling a story, creating suspense, and developing his characters. Working with Snyder in BVS will benefit Ben greatly. Snyder is someone with a keen eye for the visual spectacle and setting up great action sequences. I think Ben will absorb all the knowledge he can and fuse it with his directing style when he takes on the solo Batman films.

      Affleck takes the experience from BvS and the JL movies, and gets enough knowledge and experience to direct his own batman flick.
      Besides, Snyder will produce every movie, so he can help Affleck out when he starts shooting The Batman.

None of the movies you mentioned are strictly original. Watchmen was an adaptation, Dawn of the Dead was a remake, and MoS drew from disparate elements of a 70+ year mythology. I would say a movie like Sucker Punch would be most indicative of Snyder's storytelling ability, which, yes, tends to be pretty lackluster on its own merits. Great visionary, but typically mediocre as a storyteller.

Go ahead and dismiss Peter Jackson for LOTR and Hobbit, dismiss Christopher Nolan coz' Prestige and his Batman movies are by your logic "adaptations", go ahead and dismiss David Fincher for Gone Girl and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. NO. Great films are considered great films people don't judge them unfairly because they're adaptations. David Fincher is considered one of the greatest directors in spite of directing a bad movie like Alien 3 which was not based on any book.

      While I do not disagree on the Hobbit part, it is definitely not better in any way than Gone Girl or the Prestige. From a directing point of view, and from a writing point of view. No comparison there, I'm afraid. Also, the argument wasn't that adaptations=lazy writing. There's an oscar category for "Best writing based on existing material". That's not the point. The point is that what he has done, which has mostly been movies based on existing properties, haven't been written that well, and some times (like Man of Steel and Watchmen) dialogue is taken directly from the source material instead of being written directly for the movie. No need to get defensive. Snyder is definitely not a screenwriter, and he definitely does not see himself as such. He needs a good screenwriter to work with, like most directors. He does have good ideas, much like Goyer, but keep him away from the typing machines.

      Nothing you've stated has disproven my point, Vish. Yes, LoTR and TDK trilogy rely on the strength of source material. Doesn't completely discount the caliber of Jackson or Nolan, and if you read my comment thoroughly, you'd see that I didn't completely discount Snyder's caliber. The key is to understanding just that - the strength of a source work, regardless of who's tasked with adapting it. No one's judging unfairly or dismissing anything, in fact, I'm doing just the opposite.
      Btw, Fincher's good, but the original Swedish version of TGWtDT was better, though. And there's a lot of critics who'd dismiss the Hobbit.

      That was my point. You said Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen don't count, I think they do. Great movies count regardless of their original inspiration. Movies are a work of art unto itself, unless where the line between them becomes completely inseparable as in the Harry Potter movies, as they are direct adaptations. Today Peter Jackson is who he is because of LOTR. It was The Dark Knight which made Nolan extra special as it was top of the game. A lot of creativity and innovative filmmaking went into those films despite being based on books or comics. The same applies for Watchmen and DotD.

      I don't think Watchmen is great at all.It misses the mark regarding what the comic was about and relies too much on visuals and gore instead of character development and trying to tell a good story.Snyder tried too hard to put the comic on film and because of that the script is very,very stiff.Even the 3 hour version didn't get everything on the screen and it was boring.
      Bubastis randomly appears toward the end in Karnak and you don't even know the backstory of how that animal ended that way,the actors minus 2-3 of them are mediocre in their interpretation,which makes the reveal of Ozymandias' plan at the end to fall flat and there's just too much green screen to invest yourself in the environment.
      What I'll give him and his screenwriter is the changed ending,which worked in this version and that he tried to adapt it as a film,even though I believe that Watchmen should be left alone and never to be made into a movie again.It's just too dense to work in that medium and you'll never capture everything like in comic book form,which it took to new heights.
      The best Snyder film in terms of story and characters is the remake of Dawn of the dead and the script was written by James Gunn,so that's what happens when a competent writer is handling the material Zack is directing.Everything else he made was visually dazzling,but had poor storytelling.
      If we're to believe everything that Eisenberg is saying about Terrio,then we'll finally have a movie where Snyder delivers both story and visuals.

      I don't know,but I think it would have worked better as a miniseries with each episode being the adaptation of an issue from the comics.
      That way it would have kept most of the serialized nature of the source material and the character development.The budget of such a project would have been enormous and that's why it never happened and never will.
      There's a fan edit online called Watchmen:Midnight that has gathered positive feedback among fans and is probably the most faithful attempt at recreating the comic on screen from what I've read,but I have yet to see it.It has a 3 hour and 35 minute runtime,which isn't exactly a short amount of time for a film by any stretch of the imagination and it's a good enough reason to postpone it until the right mood sets in for such a viewing.
      Look it up online if you're interested to find out what's been added and taken out of this version.

      Watchmen is severely underrated. Perfect direction, the cinematography, acting, Rorschach... great work of art. It got a double thumbs up from Roger Ebert. I know these movies are incomparable but Ken brought up adaptations being inspirations etc. Gone Girl yes it was Fincher, but there were too many plot holes. I don't generally nitpick but there were some large inconsistencies with that film.

      No one is looking forward to batman v superman more than me and I think Snyder's a cool guy and a visionary in some ways, but no, watchmen is not better than The Prestige and Gone Girl. You're letting your comicbook movie fanboy spirit cloud your judgement of good cinematic storytelling. Snyder's movies have breathtaking visuals but with dialogue that is very on the nose and somewhat of a hollow emotional narrative and development, including Man of Steel which was good, but not great as a movie. Awesomely fun to watch but a bit hollow feeling with characters that feel a bit like 2-dimensional cut outs of an obvious archetype. I own Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead, and Man of Steel on Blu-Ray and am a fan of Snyder but he has yet to make a movie that really wows in terms of storytelling and feeling immersed in relatable characters with depth. I'm confident he can pull it off with Terrio on board though.

One thing about the DCEU which makes it better than Marvel is that there are no cookie-cutter sequels or strictly solo movies where other characters can't come in no matter how large is the scale of threat.

➡ In Iron Man 3, an entire harbour blown up by a terrorist enterprise, did S.H.I.E.L.D. or Captain America show up?

➡ Iron Man came back to save two twins from Strucker's castle but did not bother when the entire S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ blew up and H.Y.D.R.A. took over helicarriers to assassinate targets.

You will not find that issue in the DCEU, the sandbox allows other characters to come in if the threat is in their backyard. Batman is in BvS because Metropolis affected him and Wonder Woman is in BvS because the Doomsday/OMAC cataclysm is world threatening. Batman is in Suicide Squad because there has to be an interaction with the Joker etc. etc.

I'm happy the sandbox concept is making the DCEU seamless. Now Marvel is taking hints from this ala Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok and Civil War.

Exactly. The DCEU seems so much MORE connected with just THREE movies, compared to Marvel's 12 . In addition to watering down their stronger characters, they don't bother with many 'connecting-easter eggs' or even cameos. Every sequel starts with a BS flashback of "This is what happened X many years ago, and we never hinted at it in any previous movie, so here's something very rushed and poorly though up".. And they tried to set up other movies for the first time ever with AoU but that movie sucked big time. Kevin Feige would probably have continued with his stale formula if it weren't for competition from DC.

  And they never proof read their continuity which leaves gaping and unforgivable errors. In the Thor post-credits scene, Loki makes it to Earth but in The Avengers they have to summon Loki to Earth using the tesseract which is a retcon. They retconned the Mandarin too. And yeah, the post-credits scenes do suck.

  I have no problem with Flashbacks whatsoever. All I'm saying is that they hardly ever set up future villains like in The Dark Knight Trilogy (Joker mentioned at the end of BB, Ra's ah Ghul's daughter in BB, and Bane being linked to both) or even the DCEU (with the events of MoS and WW directly tying into BvS and even suicide squad). There were no hints or easter eggs for Malekith, Whiplash, Aldrich Killian or the Mandarin in any other movies.

  Lex is the ultimate villain whose development will span out the entire length and breadth of the DCEU so he needs a pawn in BvS to take down the Trinity rather than taking charge himself and ending up his character on a defeated note. Zod reanimated as an OMAC/Bizarro is the way to go.

    That would lead into these movies looking too much alike. Flash and Arrow already do it in their tv shows, and Man of Steel did it as well... No need to give these movies a formula. We should strive towards differentiation, not repetition. An origin story here and there won't hurt anyone.

  I really don't see what the big deal is. We've never had these characters on the big screen before. And origin stories can be freaking awesome (Superman The Movie, Batman Begins, Iron Man, Spider-Man)... It has more potential for a more personal, and MAYBE (big maybe) better written story, due to the bigger character development ordeal.

I like the idea of the origins being more to establish the characters mentality than actually introducing their full fledged beginnings. It works for Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman in some respects. So the narratives to some of these movies won't be bogged down by trying to establish known entities.

This obviously won't work for all properties nonetheless I find it Savy to introduce characters only when it is undoubtedly necessary. I look foward to what the DCEU has in store.

The fact that he says that some movies might be prequels/origin movies confirms there will be some origin stories in DCEU apart from Man of Steel, as of now the most logical conclusion for the next DCEU origin story is Wonder Woman and then Shazam. But at the same time I don't see any origin stories happening for Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern Crops and Cyborg post JL 1 because there would be more importance on continuing the story post JL 1 than dig more into the character's past.

Either way the yet to be announced Batman solo and Dark Universe are not origin stories so for now the origin stories in DCEU are only 3 and they are Man of Steel, Wonder Woman and Shazam compared to Marvel's 5 origin movies. I am liking the difference in world building.

Origin movies are those which showcases the story of the hero right from the earliest day on the other hand team up movies skips that and directly gives us a movie filled with various characters who are already good at what they are doing and backstories are referenced either through a flashback or a verbal explanation like Suicide Squad and Guardians of Galaxy for example. Thus not an origin movie.

      SS isn't an origin movie, it's a team up event movie with all of the it's character already established (big time criminals and super villains) they would just refer the backstory in some flashbacks, flashbacks and referencing doesn't make SS an origin movie, Origin movie is how the hero/villain became who he/she is and the entire journey behind it.

I like DC and WB's current approach

At this point it'd take too long to set everything up with origin stories and then ultimately lead up to the Justice League. The hype and momentum for Superhero/Comic Book films is at an all time high and it's important to take full advantage of it while its still at its peak.

So WB's plan is genius. Start with your ace, your big guns and make a big splash. What better way to do it then with the two most iconic Superhero characters Batman and Superman. Introduce Wonder Woman, introduce Aquaman, Cyborg, etc and hit them right away with Justice League. Bring out the heavy artillery with a storyline and a world set in a time where a lot has already taken place.

This will then allow a lot of room for creative to go backwards and tell origin stories for each character and show how they got to that point. I am very interested in seeing how Affleck's Batman has become the Batman he is now. How much pain and anguish did he endure from The Joker and other villains that have crossed his path.

Same with Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, etc. It's a great idea and a different way of approaching it. If DC had gone the Marvel route there'd be so much chatter of them trying to replicate the same success and nonsense from trolls. This apporach separates the two studios even further. I love films from both Marvel and WB and even Fox (with the exception of a few), but DC's priority to be darker and to create more of a human element to their stories will always hold my highest regards. Can't wait to see the entire DC universe unfold. March can't come soon enough.

Yup I like the approach that WB and DC are going with their films. Introduce their major characters already established and already battle tested. At this point it'd take way too long to try to establish the DC universe with origin stories setting up to Justice League. Come right out with the big guns. Batman and Superman. Then introduce Wonder Woman, Aquaman and hit em right away with Justice League.

The hype for Superhero films is at an all time high right now. WB's approach is the best way to take advantage of the momentum and deliver their hardest blows while interest is at its peak.

This will allow creative the opportunity to do prequels and sequels all at once. Prequels for the likes of Batman to show how he became the scarred and worn down Batman he is. Sequels for other solo films to continue to the story line to lead to the next Justice League.

My feeling is WB/DC will do both prequels and sequels to follow up Justice League. Prequels to show the likes of Batman how he became the Batman he is in BVS. Then sequels to continue the story to set up future films.

I like that their basing these characters from the get go, this shows that their going to have a flow from movie to movie and gradually build from one movie to the next, every hero seems to be seasoned in their careers. This is a good sign of things to come from the masterminds, and I like hearing from Charles Roven himself. Thanks Chris
