Warner Bros. responds to leaked 'Suicide Squad' Comic-Con footage [update: David Ayer too]

Yesterday, director David Ayer surprised the audience at Comic-Con and showed off the first footage from Suicide Squad. Unlike the new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Suicide Squad trailer was not officially released online. Because of this a leaked version has been online since yesterday, and is currently closing in on 5 million views.

So when can fans expect to see it in glorious high-definition? Not any time soon according to Sue Kroll, the President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution for Warner Bros.. Here's what she told Deadline:

We have no plans currently to release the Suicide Squad footage that leaked from Hall H on Saturday. It’s unfortunate and ultimately damaging that one individual broke a long-standing trust we have enjoyed with our fans at the convention by posting early material, which, at this point, was not intended for a wider audience. We are still in production on Suicide Squad, and will have a big campaign launch in the future. Our presentation yesterday was designed to be experienced in that room, on those big screens!

The Suicide Squad Comic-Con trailer starts off with Amanda Waller speaking to US generals at dinner. She explains that she has some of the most dangerous criminals locked up and wants to assemble them in a task force. If anything goes wrong, they can blame them -- the "bad guys". We then see Harley Quinn doing acrobatics in her cell, followed by quick shots of the other Suicide Squad members. There's then some group shots which show the whole team together, followed by some more quick action shots, which includes the scene of Batman riding on top of the Joker's car. And then... the money shot! We hear Jared Leto's Joker laugh and see him on screen for the first time. He's holding two electrodes and says "Oh, I'm not gonna kill ya". Cut to a close up on his face -- "I'm just going to hurt you really, really, bad" he says with a smile.

Hopefully Warner Bros. doesn't wait too long to release the trailer online, but if the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer timeline is anything to go by, we may have to wait until this Fall.

      Correct that is a cover made by the movie. Original one is from bee gees same words completely different melody. The original is good but the cover fit the footage so well.

I'm fine with it not being officially released, because mainly the only reason they even put anything together was probably for the Comic Con. They are still filming and the teaser isn't as polished as they'd likely want for a wide release to the general audience.

    Thanks appreciate that. It's not polished in terms of them not having all the films footage to work with. They formed a teaser not when they were ready, but to give fans something at Comic Con. Once they finish filming they can look at all the footage and put something out there that isn't just for the fan, but for the general audience. I'd bet it'll be very similar to this one, but with some changes here and there that is a complete version of what they wish to present to all people.

  I would have to agree given that they're filming for another month. It was only two months ago the Lamborghini sequence was filmed too anyway. I love Harles' little quip.

    Yes, and I'd bet there's a lot of stuff they've filmed that isn't ready for viewing, not to mention the month of filming that's yet to occur. It's great stuff, but can be improved for mass release.

What a lame statement. Don't they realize nothing but good can come from releasing it wide? It's not like people only go to con's to get exclusive stuff---and you know some of---wait not....MOST of us are not wealthy enough to go to comic con...so why should they be the only one to see the trailer?
that's a bad, elitist approach for them to take. Just because I couldn't go to the con doesn't mean I'mnot just as excited for the film as all the people there. Release the trailer for all of us.
This "it's damaging" and "it's unfortunate someone broke trust" YOU BROKE TRUST----YOU DESERVE IT for withholding from the rest o fus.

    How exactly is it cannibalising? If you know gaming, the biggest event of the entire year is E3, where ALL publishers host their conferences one after the other and showcase all their big games, streaming the full event live and releasing all trailers and footage globally straight after they air.
    The hype is MASSIVE. It is enormous. Nothing gets "cannablised" or "competes" for spotlight.
    Why? Because everyone wants to see EVERYTHING at events like these. Hype feeds hype. People take notice. Blogs spread news. The world "participates". People will watch everything. It doesn't "cannibalise" anything. Meaning, even if you are a die-hard DC fanboy, you are 100% going to watch a Deadpool or X-Men Apocalypse trailer because of the hype of comic-con. You'll watch all of it.
    Besides, this way you just watch the leaked footage anyway. Or you read about the trailer contents. So I really don't get why Comic-Con is like this. The people who go get access to a huge range of stuff, but us who can't basically get excluded from being in on the hype.
    Batman V Superman trailer got 15 million views in less than a day. Don't you think anyone who watches that would go straight to see Suicide Squad? Joker? Harley Quin? More Batman content?
    E3 is amazing because the entire world gets to watch and get hyped and see everything all publishers have to offer. The people who go obviously get to meet celebrities, get gifts, get to play the stage demos etc. But us who can't go, most importantly, get to *participate*.
    I've always strongly disliked how comic-con has been exclusive. That said, the BvS trailer was one of the greatest super hero trailers I've ever seen, and I'm happy.

      I 100% agree with this. It would be completely amazing if they did what E3 did and did a live broadcast. Even if they charged for it. It works perfectly well for E3 and would'nt damage them at all. It would just increase the hype. E3 is proof of this.

      Say Warner Bros. released both trailers online on the same day. The day after, all the major new sites/channels would be talking about them. Sounds awesome right? Well maybe not. Sure many people will talk about the news, but after awhile it just gets swept away by other news that comes in.
      So they don't blow their load on both movies' marketing, they separate the two releases for the trailers. This gives each film a time to shine individually while also maximizing the talk about them. In the end this isn't about how many views a trailer gets, it's about maintaining headlines and keeping the talk about the brand going and going.

        Except...views are actually important as the Suicide Squad trailer got over 10 million views in 15 hours. It would never fetch those views so quickly without the hype of comic-con and Batman V Superman so close together.
        But more importantly, to counter your point, marketing will always be done separately and individually, but what better way to reach the widest audience with the first revealed footage of your movie than feeding off the hype of the biggest comic convention and simultaneously the biggest Warner Bros movie (BvS)?
        Your opinion is flawed further because technically comic-con trailers aren't even part of the movie's public marketing strategy. You know, since the footage wasn't going to be released anyway. So, revealing the trailer does absolutely nothing to deter from all the marketing they will do in the future on the movie. Without the footage, there wouldn't even be this huge surge of interest and discussion, which is amplified by Batman V Superman as well.
        Therefore, releasing this trailer now is nothing but a positive. It allows everyone outside of Comic-Con to participate on the hype. Why do you want to be exclusionary? Or have people watch terrible quality leaks which do MORE harm to the movie's quality and people's perceptions of them?
        That's the real harm. Being excluded and watching rubbish quality trailers. Not getting to see this awesome footage now.
        Both BvS and Suicide Squad are releasing next year, yet we have 5 minutes of BvS footage and previously had 0 for Suicide Squad. It was the right time. The trailer clearly shows it is.

  I said the same thing months back when the 1st BvS footage was leaked & WB response was "that footage was meant for the people in that room". It felt like a slap to the rest of us who couldn't attend the Comic Con even if we bet our last cent trying to get there and our only hope was through the shitty camera lense of someone who thought more of us than the people who made the film.
  I'm glad someone leaked the footage... AGAIN! That's all that some of us can rely on sometimes to see what "exclusive people" saw.

    True fans wouldn't care; they would have waited anyway even if WB came out and said "you know we're going to release this online like, right away, right?" tons of people still would have camped out.
    They camp out cuz their nerds and they love it. Now they want the world to see it so everyone can bask in it's amazingness.
    The only people that care about people seeing the trailer who didn't attend the ComicCon are the executives making MONEY off of the con, no one else.

  I think the best and most logical way to go about is: Give the folks who travel, pay and wait in line for days the early viewing, but after a few days, release it to the GA. I think that would be a good compromise.

Meh. I can still enjoy the leaked footage enough for now... it's only a year away. Plus, we're likely to see some sort of teaser getting dropped in the very near future anyway. Regardless of the quality, this can still hold me off because it gives me a general idea of the tone and whatnot.
I can wait. I mean, the wait for this will feel like nothing in comparison to the hell we've had to endure with BvS for the past 2 years with virtually no news.

Howdi ! If in BvS Batman gets back from retirement (also after lost Robin and maybe put Joker on Arkham) to meet Superman, this 'Batman' in Suicide Squad will be much younger, or there's no connection between the 2 movies ? How the timeline will work on these 2 ?

  There will be a connection, but the timeline is uncertain. Suicide Squad could go into further detail regarding the defaced Robin costume in
  Batman v Superman, so it could be a flashback with a younger Batman. Nobody knows at this point, though.

      Assuming Joker is talking to Robin in that footage, that is.

        i believe that the person that the joker threatens in that SS description isn't robin. leto's joker debut will be on SS, just as it will be for affleck's batman (the lambo chase must be for that purpose) robin's death will be shown in BvS through a flashback most likely, since is fact that leto was in BvS' set to film a mistery scene, which i strongly believe is robin's murder.

    People are saying BvS will be 3 years after MoS, so SS could be in the middle of it.

i believe that the point of releasing the footage just to those attending comic con is, besides giving those fans who basically fought their way to that event a big token, to gauge their reaction to wether maintain their current course or change some things before releasing it worldwide... after all its a million of dollars bussiness we're talking about

  Yea, I'm noticing more and more fans are having this weird sense of entitlement. That just because they're a fan of something, they are OWED things. Be grateful we're even getting this film in the first place.
  I know if I ever got the chance to go to SDCC and waited over a day online for something and got this nice little exclusive so it all felt worth it, I'd feel so happy and special. If that footage was released to the public anyway, it wouldn't exactly make me pissed off, but it'd feel a bit like "Why'd I sit here all day/night miss other panels and items". But at the same time there's nothing like the momentum and excitement that builds and the camaraderie with all the fans that share the same love and passion as you do all in one place.

  I took it as they as they don't plan on releasing the Suicide Squad Trailer because they want the fans that went to SDCC to have an exclusive and because BvS is the first movie to come up and will be marketed sooner. Also this is the last SDCC before BvS, while Suicide Squad will have still have one more comic-con to also promote at. Since I have the BvS trailer I'm not exactly mad that they haven't released the SS trailer but I feel like it's a little silly to complain about the footage leaking since this literally happens all the time in this day and age. Theres no way around it unless you just ban phones.

I feel like an unwanted child. I'm such a huge supporter of the DCU and WB and just because I can't afford to travel and go to comic-con, they don't want to show me the trailer. What would it hurt to show us some love? The WB doesn't care about the real fans and people who support them, they only care about the people with money. I've been abandoned by the ones I loved and now I am alone.

  Comicon is a convention, yes, but it is also a big test. Don't know if you're familiar with audience tests, but that's how it works: You get a number of people to experience your project and learn from their reaction important facts on your results shown, if the audience enjoyed, if they all had a good perspective and the filters worked fine in certain showcase, etc.
  A leak can cloud the judgment of the designers by mixing reactions of two different groups of people: Those who seen it in great scale and those who saw a reproduction of it in, most of the times, shitty caption that damages the quality of image and so and so.
  I'm not telling you not to be sad for not seeing it, just know that having a leak is a serious busyness for a company like WB who's investing HIGH on these movies and don't want the true impact the movie could have to be hit by bad reactions to a leaked footage-- Because if you are a fan and follow the development of it, you'll watch anyway, but not the mass public. A leak CAN hurt the mass public.
