James Wan to direct Jason Momoa in 'Aquaman', Zack Snyder to produce

June 3, 2015

Warner Bros. announced today that Furious 7 director James Wan will direct Jason Momoa in Aquaman. The announcement was made by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, who also gave a great in-depth interview about the DC movie universe earlier today.

Aquaman will be produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Charles Roven. It's tentatively scheduled for a July 27, 2018 release. Check out the full press release below for more.

BURBANK, Calif. -- Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that director James Wan (“Furious Seven,” “The Conjuring”) will take the helm of the Studio’s upcoming Aquaman feature film, with Jason Momoa (“Game of Thrones”) starring as the sea-dwelling Super Hero. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Silverman stated, “We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s ‘The Conjuring’ and now on their upcoming ‘The Conjuring 2,’ and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate. The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”
Wan will also be supervising the script by Kurt Johnstad (“300,” “300: Rise of an Empire”). The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder.
Roven said, “James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen, and Jason has a dynamic presence that commands your attention. Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character as he headlines his first feature film.”
An icon for over 70 years, Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.
Currently set for a 2018 release, the film is based on characters appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Cool, I've never seen a James Wan movie but I'm super interested in an Aquaman film. I want it to be like 30% Earth and 70% Atantlis, I just want a full blown under water adventure.

Marvel zombie: Zack Snyder sucks! He's never made a good movie.
Thoughtful DC fan: Well what about "Dawn of the Dead"? That was a really, really good remake.
    Marvel zombie: Uhh... "300" sucked!
DC fan: Actually, it was visually trend-setting and a pretty good action movie.
Marvel zombie: Yeah, well... "Watchmen" was boring!
DC fan: It's actually one of the best film adaptations of a comic book... Ever. You just need to be familiar with the source material.
Marvel zombie: Shit... "Man of Steel" was horrible.
DC fan: Well, actually, that's wrong for so many reasons. Watch this link (https://m.youtube.com/watch... to start and then research and learn why it's criminally underrated.
    Marvel zombie: Oh, goddammit, well...
DC fan: "Sucker Punch" sucked? Well, it's actually a feminist allegory, but even the brightest critics missed that, so...
Marvel zombie: Yeah, well... "Legend of the Guardians"... Uhh I think that was about owls... Ha! Hack Snyder sucks!

I apologize for the off topic rant in advance but I felt compelled to post this
I had sometime to analyze and reflect on why AoU was so damn disappointing to me. I've never been that big of an Avengers fan in all my years of reading comics tbh. But one thing that got me super excited for the film was Ultron. That first trailer was undeniably badass. Ultron truly seemed like a nihilistic killer robot and the film seemed like it was gonna be stellar...but once again, MCU pulls another misleading trailer on us.
First of all, how was the film even an Age? "Age of" sugguests that there will be death and misery though out the world. Despite how I dislike the Age of Ultron comic, it had two things the MCU counterpart didn't. A truly threating and non joke cracking Ultron and an event that involved the ENTIRE world and even time travel. Age of Apocalypse...now THAT WAS AN AGE! Age of Ultron didn't even feel like it effected the entire world. It only felt like New York, Wakanda, *insert European country* was effected. Seriously?!? How is that an age??? One last thing, you have one of the most epic voices on the planet, James Spader, and you still fail at making an epic villain? Unbelievable...

"Stop trying to pretend your movies are meant to be taken seriously and have deeper meaning to it, and just embrace that they're adolescent action-comedies from the beginning."
Kevin Fiege has stated that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will never portray that *even though their trailers do. I just wish he said that BEFORE I went to see Age of Ultron the first night.
Edited: added the last part of that sentence.

I'm not too upset. At least the MCU doesn't own my all time favorite team, The Uncanny X Men or my favorite villain Dr. Doom. I also like to separate Marvel Netflix from the MCU since Fiegie doesn't have his greasy fingers all over it. Hence why it doesn't cater to children ;)

Honestly what bothered me is that they managed to save every single person. Not one casualty. How is that a threat like I don't want to see wanton killing but not one death from the "biggest threat the avengers have ever face" not even the doctor who took a blast to the chest from Ultron. It was just lame after all the hype

I know right! Like the films are just getting boring. With the same thing over and over again. No consequence makes for a pretty lame threat/villain. I think the publics opinion or at least a few critics are aware of these failings now too. Even though some critics pointed out the flaws they still gave a great review.

I can concede to that. GA still loves them but critics and some audience members that are more aware of the news and follow the movies more closely seem to be losing some interest in the wash rinse repeat cycle of Marvel films.

You just fixed the entire movie lol and is it just me or did Marvel shove the Quicksilver death in there so people would stop complaining about "people never dying in the MCU"...one person died....I didn't see that coming

I hope with WB talking about this stuff that maybe we get a little bit more of a reveal at Comic Con or something about their upcoming slate. Maybe some more costume designs or something? On that note I do hope that Wilkinson has something of an input for other heroes costumes that way they all something of a similar aesthetic. Anyone else feel that should be something DC considers?

Not my first choice, but let's see what we are working with here:
-The Conjuring might not most frightening thing out there, but it has a good story.
-Furious 7 has zero story, but proves that Wan can handle action and spectacle.
Conclusions? Interesting choice. You could do far, far, FAR worse.
