Fashionista wrote a great piece on how superhero costumes are made, and spoke with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice costume designer Michael Wilkinson to learn more about Ben Affleck's Batman costume.

Wilkinson said that they can suit Henry Cavill up as Superman in 15 minutes, but getting Ben Affleck in his Batsuit takes closer to 25 — and that's with help. "It does involve multiple costumers," Wilkinson says. "It's not the sort of thing that I could just sit in Ben's trailer and he gets into it himself. It's a six-handed operation."

When the photos of Ben Affleck as Batman were released, some fans were concerned that he'd have trouble turning his head like Michael Keaton and even Christian Bale in Batman Begins, due to the design of the cowl. That won't be a problem for Affleck however, according to Wilkinson.

"That’s actually one of the first things that Snyder mentioned to me in one of our initial meetings," Wilkinson says. "It’s a very important thing to Zack that the Batsuit would be comfortable and very flexible, but then would be able to perform in a very natural and forceful way. So a lot of incredible engineering went into the development of the new black cowl."

That's great to hear! And we won't have to wait long to see Ben Affleck's Batman in action. The first Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer will be released next month, in mid-May.

  Well Zack is directing all the justice league movies in which Batman is a part of, so it will be consistent with what they establish in Batman v Superman. So no Nolan/Burton style at all.

      Of course the style and take will be different once they reboot Batman again, it will happen because they want their version to be different from the previous ones, but i don't think that day is near, because this DCCU looks like a reaaaallllly long franchise. i know they have announced movies only till 2020 but they will announce more and extend it by this SDCC or something.

It would be expensive but I'd like to see them make a real Batsuit that can be worn based on that very high technology including flying with those wings that can also change to stiffening into wings and un-stiffening into a cape. Even add a jet pack if it's based on Kingdom Come's Batsuit. It can have a full body brace suit underneath with servo motors to surpass the modern exoskeletons, and the full body brace suit tightens around the body to make it stronger but also has a lot of high flexibility quick movement so it increases range of motion. The suit can have a thin layer of graphene in it that is modified to be 100 times stronger including in the gloves, with a layer of covering over it and under it to look like a suit being made of some type of fabric. The technique to make graphene 100 times stronger is cheap but time consuming so cost of labor could be expensive. I know of the professional that can do that. 1 gram of graphene costs about $200, so if it were made of 20 pounds (including the full body servo motor brace suit underneath) of graphene it would cost $1,813,600 just for that graphene not counting the cost in modification and molding and would have 906,800,000 joules. If it were 5 pounds instead it would cost $453,400 and be 226,700,000 joules. With everything else on the suit it could cost $2 million to $10 million in all. If that were also used for a real life bat vehicle that would be cool too. Then it could be resold to investors for $100,000,000 to $1,000,000,000 to make some profit off of it. That would increase the profit to the people selling the materials, modification, and molding to support the growth of those industries. They can also sell a video on it of free runners who can show the capability of the Batsuit and different types of bat vehicles including gizmos which could be sold on home video release, and all of those items would go on resale where the government can even pay for the research and get information on how it was made. I'd go to the movie theaters to watch that for 2 hours if they made a comprehensive enough set and showed it off. It can also be sort of a documentary showing how it's all made, and give specific specs on everything including joules, force, etc. A grenade explosion is 261,521.52 joules so the suit could take from 867 to 3467 grenade explosions. It could take on armies of entire ground, entire naval, and entire airforce fleets. They can show a person taking machine gun shots and grenade explosions from many people with the suit with a made strategic terrain area for advanced mixed combat situations including high areas to climb like skyscrapers where they could do that with a Hollywood set. They could even have it next to water mass like a sea to have naval ships and airplanes attack it such as remote controlled drones to show it's defensive and offensive capabilities. It would also be very fast and stealthy. The suit could have a built in radar sensor to detect how much damage it can take so it can get close to taking a lot more damage and giving a lot more damage for a recorded scenario. It would only be a one time deal because it's so expensive, so it happens in real time. The movements would be free and so it's not meant that every moment is planned like directing a scene, but it would be planned to show the total capability defensively and offensively to where they do want the person in the suit to do all of those things. A 25 megaton TNT yield hydrogen bomb explosion is 104,599,380,000,000,000 joules and a 1.5 gigaton TNT yield hydrogen bomb explosion is 6,275,962,800,000,000,000 joules. That's on newer science so per gram a material in the future can be made much stronger than 100,000 joules. Another idea is to also fold the material as many times as possible before coiling and slip-knotting the material with nanites which could get it to several times stronger. Other techniques will be found as time goes on.

    You can get Kevlar to take knife blows. Bruce Lee could deflect several knife blows without a suit. Wrestling and jiu jitsu can cancel out striking so they've got to be learned and mixed. The guy that was punching him and knifing him wasn't that big. You can still go at his non armored areas and his neck, also wrestling him down and using his suit against him if it doesn't give him enough movement. The muzzle energy of a knife blow isn't that much, so how can that suit handle grenade explosions. But if it can't take gunshots or machine gun fire then it can't take grenade explosions. Anything can happen and you've always got to be prepared. The guy that did the movie theater murders was a college student and he had Kevlar on where it was all very expensive materials. He had a lot of machine gun fire, a gas mask, and protective covering like the college student with the bat suit. The college student that killed people at the movie theater also set explosives all over his apartment complex where he could have blown up the entire building, but he was caught before he could set it to blow up and he didn't add the sensor yet to detonate just in case cops entered into his apartment room. He used smoke grenades or something like that at the movie theater on the showing of The Dark Knight Rises. There's another guy that did mixed martial arts who was doing some shrooms with his trainer and said he saw the devil in his trainer. He beat his mixed martial arts trainer down and cut out his heart alive to eat it in front of everyone. He didn't have a suit on for that.

        I like that you shared all of those budget lists. Batman could put a $5 billion cap on all of his inventions, gizmos, suits, and vehicles for his career of decades but most of that cost is in the modern times of going into Justice League and going into the Dark Knight Returns, The Kingdom, and Kingdom Come era. With rising inflation in the next decade and with how bad things will be in The Kingdom era he could put as much as $20 billion into it altogether by Kingdom Come. He shouldn't be wasteful such as Nolan's Batman had too many vehicles. Batman should have just what he needs and be very efficient with his budget. He has an army of bat drones but that's cost efficient, where there's no need for dozens of vehicles of the same model when you can just make 1 model of vehicle count at a time with the level of money he's putting into it. It also depends how far in time Warner Brothers will go into this. I think they may go as far as 2035 where they may want to plan to get all of their stories in by that time with Kingdom Come finishing it up of 2013 to 2035. The Kingdom era can be in 2030 and Kingdom Come can be in 2035. The inflation values for Batman's budget need to be adjusted for that. Keep in mind Bruce Wayne is excellent at budgeting for Wayne Enterprises where it is such a successful company. He puts a lot more money into Wayne Enterprises than he does his Batman career where they need to show that business perspective for Bruce Wayne. Nolan began the idea but it can be taken much further. Nolan's was over expensive and tedious, while not being as efficient as it could be. The designs for the suits and vehicles were far less than optimal. Batman would have a lot of other forms of technology and it would be a lot more cost efficient. That's also because Bruce Wayne has his own manufacturers and makes everything in house instead of subbing it to others. He has to in order to get much more money value and to make a lot more money. He's producing in high numbers to where he can do that. He can take his manufacturing technology and then bring it to the batcave without it going on record in his expenses. The Justice League may have a special status with the government to where Batman can then use his own budget. Bruce Wayne also does work for CIA, NASA, military inventions, to where he could get this special privilege from the government. He could somehow keep his budget hidden and keep that a secret from the governments. He puts $5 billion in his pocket that's no longer on record to do this, while he has $45 billion with a multibillion dollar business to where that $5 billion wouldn't be noticeable. If he gets to $100 billion by 2030 then by that time he's pocketed $20 billion for his Batman career. He could just have a few guys that take his production technology from Wayne Enterprises and develop it more in the Batcave. Or Bruce Wayne can program his drones and his computer hardware to do this. They can do Tower of Babel before he gets to that level, where this is before Batman gets everything to that level. Bruce Wayne gets to that level by The Kingdom era to where he puts the money in it, but by The Dark Knight Returns era he could have the fundamentals down that go into the masses for The Kingdom and Kingdom Come era. The Dark Knight Returns era could be in 2020 to 2025.

the fuss over Keaton's head turning and batman on film's head turning is so fucking ridiculous and petty. The dark knight suit was an overly extreme solution. Thinner latex, foam latex materials can be used allowing the design to still resemble the classic comic cowls however still allowing head turning. obviously, look at Night Owl in watchmen.

      Yea, even though I really liked the DoFP character, the suit was bad as well. Hopefully Marvel updates their costumes in the following movie. Scarlet Witch can get a pretty badass costume if they put some effort into it. At least that's what I think.

        By their (or rumored to be just her) next appearance following AoU, I am expecting the outfits to look more...superhero-y. Barton's took a Twp I that direction with AoU. Wilson's is supposed to as well in his next appearance.

        I still don't like Hawkeye's costume, wish they could make the purple work. I heard that he might actually go full purple in AoU. If he does, I hope it's badass. Scarlet seriously deserves an awesome suit though. That "rebellious teenager" suit fits her personality but it just doesn't look very good. I'm not expecting something slutty but at least superheroish.

    You do know the level of gore, violence and explicit material in Suicide Squad I hope ?! King Shark ripping heads, chomping off brains and flesh, Waller decapitating by setting off the bombs, Deadshot's bullets puncturing eye sockets and skulls, Harley bashing brains out with that mallet, El Diablo razing opponents to sooty corpses....
    I support the same level of violence on screen. This is the Squad's trademark ruthlessness.

      Actually, the only Suicide Squad issues I've read are from the 80s. I don't read the n52 stuff.
      I want these to be successful, but making them for people 17+ yrs doesn't sound like the best route.
      They'd be better off releasing an unrated version on Bluray instead of presenting it on the big screen.

      Dude everyone knows WB isn't gonna make a R rated SS movie and a petition like this or fans asking something will never change that. But on the other hand Nolan with his TDK trilogy and Zack with his MoS have proved how dark, nasty and violent a movie can get even within a PG 13 rating, which is now being colloquially dubbed as Hard P 13 or PG 16, so there's no need for R rated SS movie.

        The violence that you referred in MOS/TDKtrilogy is very different from what we've read in Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad focuses more on the gore, blood and mayhem to get the job done by the ruthless and remorseless squad members.
        MOS/TDKRises there's considerable fighting and destruction but Suicide Squad has Tarantino style violence where blood and flesh being splattered on your screens, body parts mutilated and ripped off.. so that's pretty extreme. R Rated extreme.

        Those are comics anyway, but we all know the truth right WB isn't gonna make a R rated SS, there are a lot of reasons for that, obvious reason is box office returns and they also have to make sure this movie stays consistent with rest of the shared universe sovthat things are cohesive and all. So its fine if we do not get that gore. Movie makers can find that balance and make it work.

        Budget wise, yes, but I wouldn't say a $160 million box office is a success (especially if Superman Returns isn't seen as one). Plus, look at the turn out for the sequel.
        I don't put much faith in RT regardless of where it falls with my opinion.
        Same with V for Vendetta. Actually, this morning had the benefit of not requiring success to maintain a universe or sequel.
        Dredd (which seems to be vastly underrated) wasn't succes enough to secure a sequel. There's talks of one, but a solid box office success would've guaranteed it.
        SS is supposed to be one of a several movies making the shared universe. If it's going to further the overall story, should it segregate a portion of the movie audience because it's rated R?

        Dude profits and commercial success are calculated by how much a movie makes on top of Production + Marketing and Distribution budget and not by looking at just 160 Million or 200 Million it makes. That's how studios measure success or cry over failures.

        So, Sin City, V for Vendetta, & Dredd all prove an R rated cbm will be profitable to continue a brand? I'm not certain what I'm missing.

        Dude there's no need to cite it, thats the very basics of profits and loss analysis I mean the basic underlying or fundamental core of business and management. Its there in every business study text book from high school to post graduation, its totally legit you can use it anywhere.
        Well if a studio is sure that they get more than what they invested (through their statistics and analysis), they will go for it, provided they always keep the budget as low as possible for R rated movies. Which usually happens with every R rated movie.

        I'm aware of revenue - expenses = profit/loss. I'm looking for a site that I can reference those numbers.
        I'm curious what the profit margin actually was for those movies.

        Well its a dynamic concept its changes with respect to the particular product that is being made, it's different in movies compared to what it is in .... Let's say mobile phone market. Hell its even different from one movie to anither movie. Its all a game of logic, analysis and some guess work but if you wanna dive little deep maybe see the wikipedia page on profit margin, its explains the concept in a easy way.

  NO never gonna happen, we need a PG 13 suicide squad, not because we are kids, but we want the masses to enjoy an unique movie like this. and Zack and Nolan have proven how violent, dark and nasty movies can be made even in a PG 13 rating. so it's totally fine to have a PG 13 SS. But do you rally believe WB will change their minds and make a R rated SS just because a bunch of people signed a petition, especially when they are moving into production in a week or so. Keep dreaming.

      Right from the get go Deadpool was written as R rated movie and then discussions came about rating but they went with a really low budget and thus R rated deadpool movie, but on the other hand Suicide Squad is a big budget movie, so chances are unlikely. But anyhow good luck sir.

      It's a comment section so of course people are gonna comment. Jeez Louise. And Deadpool could be rated R because Fox is using a much smaller budget for the film than Suicide Squad has to work with. The more money put into a big action project the more money they're gonna need in return for the cost of production, including will smith's paycheck, and the cost of marketing. The studios usually make like two to three times as much when it's pg13 instead of R because it's a much larger share of the movie going market who can see it without any restrictions on age. Parents dropping off 12-16 year olds to see the movie on a Saturday happens with pg 13 so mo' money for the studio. Deadpool's movie budget was small so they can take more risks and be edgier. It's how it goes.

        You mentioned that Fox did with Deadpool as if you were making a point based on some rationale other than your own preference. If you already knew all that then you wouldn't have made that point if you were being rational, but instead just whining I guess. How lovely. E-petitions don't do jack but keep on keeping on I guess.
