'Suicide Squad' will have good, old fashioned practical effects

If you're annoyed that CGI and visual effects are becoming too common in superhero movies, Suicide Squad director David Ayer is your new hero.

A few weeks ago he showed off a flamethrower shooting some serious heat, and now he's given us a behind-the-scenes look at squibs that are rigged for a gunfight.

A squib is a miniature explosive device used to provide pyrotechnic effects in movies. No CGI gun flashes here!

Earlier this week Ayer revealed that he's putting some last minute touches on his Suicide Squad script. The movie is scheduled to begin shooting next month in Toronto.

PS. I know there are a lot of Suicide Squad rumors going around right now. Since they broke on social media, I'm in "wait and see" mode. I don't want to share them here and get everyone excited over something that may not be true.

I have no problems with CGI that looks real, MoS being the prime example.

I never quite understood the negative stance taken when it comes to CGI, especially when it comes to CBMs.

  Like the scene in TDKR where the Batpod jumps the car carrier. They couldn't make the Batpod stunt vehicle do that safely so they put a stuntman dressed as Batman on more of a traditional stunt bike (like the ones bane used) and did the jump for real, then added the Batpod in with CG later.

I really enjoyed end of watch but I thought the final shoot out didn't really fit with the realistic tone of the rest of the film. Idk, seems like it went a little Tarantino there at the end.

I have no idea what to expect from this movie. I mean I assume when I see bvs it'll have a few awesome moments and the rest would be kinda ok. thats the same way I reacted to mos and seeing as Snyder has a good style with his work I assume I will feel that way. I don't really know much abour ayer but I hope he does well.

I gotta say, the only redeeming factor about the Green Lantern movie was it's cast...Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan? PERFECT! Too bad the movie turned out to be such trash...Anyway, hopefully Chris Pine becomes the new Green Lantern.

  Plus, Idris is 42 years old. His contract with Marvel ends with Thor 3 unless he extend it. And Thor 3 comes out in 2018. He is 45 then, and that is not optimal to start with. Yes i know Ben Affleck is 42, but the diffrence is that it is better to use a older Batman, for the reason of Christopher Nolans Batman,which had a young Bruce from the start. You don't need to tell the origin of Bats all over again,

I prefer a balance. There are scenes where practical effects come off as hokey and fake looking, so CGI is needed there.
I think Hobbit went too much with the CGI though. Lords of the Rings did have both, right? I can't remember.

I'm really getting pumped for this movie. Ive never known much about the Suicide Sqaud ,outside of their individual appearances in the animated shows and the Assualt on Arkham film but I'm really excited for something, I didn't know I would be excited for! Glad DC is taking the initiative for this movie!

I think Suicide Squad is a great platform to introduce the villains as characters first and then antagonists in other films. Really helps in fleshing them out.

Thank goodness for practical squibs. Digital gunshots wounds and blood effects are some of the worst uses of CGI in modern filmmaking.

Sounds good, one of the many things I personally appreciated about the Nolan Batman films was that he only used cgi as a last result eg The Bat flight through Gotham at the end of TDKR even then though it was practical effects first then cgi added on.
I'm really looking forward to this movie, everything in hearing about it makes me even more excited and everything I've heard from Ayer makes me even more excited.

    I'm not talking about anything in particular. I was just saying that sometimes practical effects are the best approach and sometimes they aren't.
    In GL, they obviously had to use some CGI, but they went too far with it, like with the suit and the mask (good God, that mask was terrible!). There needs to be a balance between the two.

I cannot remember which director who said this, but it's something I agree with - directors who use too much CGI, or rely on it for most part are lazy. CGI should be used for two cases - when practical effects cannot achieve the needed outcome (creating something that really needs CGI help or creating a scene that would be much safer for the workers) and cleaning up the scene (use practical but with a touch of CGI to give it a clean-organic look).

It depends on what you're trying to do; in some movies it doesn't matter (like in animated films, or when it's used to intentionally created an unrealistic visual like a dream scene). But if you're trying to make a live action movie and try to sell it as a real scene, then yeah, what you said applies well. Some CGI production studios are so good you can't tell what's real and what's not.
