Dwayne Johnson: "One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman"

In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson talked about his new DC Comics role as Black Adam in 2019's Shazam movie. And how, if at all, will Black Adam fit in with the wider DC universe?

"It was all agreed that the worlds are all interconnected… One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there's a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humour."

It sounds like Dwayne Johnson could be going toe-to-toe with Ben Affleck or Henry Cavill in a future DC movie! What do you make of The Rock's comments? Let me know in the comments below.

        Truthfully, I'm not too familiar with Mr. Terrific beyond his wicked smarts. I know he's a technological genius.
        Aside from Batman (up to the fall of 2006), I don't really know much about DC characters beyond the more generic info.

        I'm not doubting Doom could be smarter, but (and I admit this is an illness when I ask this) what do you mean by stating "most people"? Can you quantify that? Where are you pulling that source from?
        I only ask because polling that question here will more then likely be "most people agree Terrific is smarter." On a Marvel site, it'd be Doom.

        Reed Richards and Doom vs. Mr. Terrific, Lex Luthor and Vandal Savage. Terrific and Savage were non factors. It ended up being Doom vs. Luthor.

        I myself have always considered Bats and Luthor equals but nether of them come near Doom's intellect or will power. The guy's prep feats are legendary. And his will power goes beyond anything I've ever seen. Doom with prep is nigh unstoppable.

        I have to disagree; Batman has a stronger will power then Lex & at least on par with Doom. Lex seems to be concerned with his own survival, so I think that gives his will power level a hit.
        Aside from 1 bullshit moment in GL (written by Johns who has been trying to pump up Jordan's muscles), I haven't seen anything to indicate Batman's will power doesn't rival anyone else's.
        Doom probably is more intellectual, but I don't believe there's any reason to think Doom's level of prep & contingency aren't equal with Batman's. The 'ends' are different, but level & quality are balanced.

        Batman definitely has more Will power than Lex. I only said Lex was on par with Bats intellectually, not in the willpower department. However Doom has something both these characters lack in the Will power department...ambition. All Batman truly cares about is protecting his city and in some cases earth. All Lex cares about is his hatred of Superman but unlike Lex, Doom has never let his hatred of Reed get in the way of his ambition. Doom has achieved Godlike power more times than any other human character I can imagine. He's stolen the power of Galactus and made him his bitch...twice. He's become omnipotent by stealing the Beyonder's power using his wit, tech, and magick. Here are some really amazing examples of Prep and Will, Doom and Dracula share borders between Latveria and Transilvania. Doom had inticipated war between Dracula so he time traveled all the way back to the Christian Era, carved a stake out of the cross Jesus was crusified on and also made it into spikes for his own suit in case Dracula ever gets any ideas. Doom using his advanced knowledge of physics developed machine in his suit that is capable of reverse the magnetic feild in close proximity. He has used this contingency on Magneto twice, showing mags that brain>brawn. Doom was sent back 1,000,000 years in time by the Marquis of Death (who is a Galaxy buster) and was eaten alive by a megaladon. Doom then reasembled himself molecule by molecule until he was surviving souly on his hatred alone. He then spent the next 1,000,000 years becoming more and more powerful in the Dark arts until he was able to kill a Watcher and then kill the person who sent him there. And if this doesn't symbolize Will Power, I don't what does

        I concur Doom has more ambition. Will power & prep I still concede is a draw. The examples you provide demonstrate both well for Doom, but not methods Batman would use. It's kind of apples & oranges. I'm certain in Batman's career he's gotten access to devices & allies that could have him doing the exact same thing...but it's not his style.
        Part of Batman's will power is not altering time or gaining superpowers. It's striving forward with his own abilities & the limits of being human.
        There's been dozens of examples of Batman's preparedness; satellite BatCaves, gear, controlling Gotham, taking down his allies, etc.

        Even though it may be "apples and oranges" like you said, I think it's important to note that they may be equal tacticians and strategists, it is very important to note that Doom is still the better prep master. Batman is a defensive player and mainly uses prep for senerios that may occur. Rarely ever is Bats both defensive and offensive. Doom is both defensive and offensive and like I said, Doom and Bats may be equal in the tactics and strategy department, it still doesn't change the fact that Doom is a far superior Scientist with much better technology, the resources of an entire nation, knowledge in Dark Magick that is almost unpresidented (it is quite possible that he is even superior to Dr Strange), an army of Doom bots that look, talk and resemble him to the point where psychics can't even tell the difference, the ability to switch minds with anyone by simply making eye contact (a skill he learned from a group of aliens), shields that have taken blasts from Galactus, Infinity Gauntlet and Thanos and much, much more. The point I'm making is even though they may be equal in tactical and strategical skill, it is blatantly obvious Doom has much, much more versitility on his side.

        I wouldn't argue Doom is more intellectual. Doom does have more resources (magic, tech, whole nation) then Batman. He's planned offensive strategies before, as well (though I don't see how one planning to attack & the other planning to defend makes a difference, both are prepping). In War Games, it was revealed Batman has devised plans to control Gotham, such as controlling the crime lords with a puppet crime lord figure.
        I would say Doom uses more elaborate methods (time travel, magic, advance tech) in his scenario preps.

        Did you say "I wouldn't argue Doom is more intelligent"? Or "wouldn't agree"? And I don't think Batman comes anywhere near Doom's level of prep or intelligence. The ONLY character that I would put on Doom's level of prep is John Constantine. Batman just simply can't preform half the level of feats Doom has done. In both Marvel and DC, you have to have a bloodline or lineage in order to practice Magick. Batman doesn't posses the bloodline nor does he posses Doom's ambition in Magick (1,000,000 years expierence). And he just isn't on Doom's level of Science either. Doom's greatest enemy is the literal embodiment of Science and he has bested Reed multiple times as well. Doom built the first time machine in the Marvel Universe years before Richards was able to, it was only though inspection and observational analysis of Doom's machine that Richards was able to build his own. Then Doom got so good with time travel physics/tech he was able to build a time machine into his freaking suit. Doom's knowledge of physics is second only to Reed Richards and like I said, he's bested the greatest scientist in comics multiple times. Hell, if it wasn't for Doom's arrogance he'd probably superior to Reed. Doom's tech is arguably even greater than Tony Stark's. Dispite the fact that Doom is a dictator, he actually loves and cares for the people of his country...but even then he can still be one of the most ruthless bastards you'll ever come across. Adding his ruthlessness to prep only makes him even more dangerous. Doom's prep is light years beyond Batman's. I'd also like to add one more feat to the Will Power department for Doom, Doom was once sent to Hell and tourtcured by a legion of Demons...he showed no pain, he wouldn't give them the satisfaction as the infernal Hellfire burned all his flesh away.

        I would agree Doom has a superior intellect, not prep. Again, Doom has different methods & direct access to techniques to prep, but that's only because of his character. Batman has allies that could permit him access to use magic, time manipulation, etc, but that's not his character. That doesn't make him any less, it just makes his methods different.
        As for the Hell bit, Batman has been there. He did get tortured by DeSaad for nearly a decade before besting him in a battle of wits. Surviving a master torturer for nearly 10yrs shows will power.

        There's a difference between having the ability to do something that is completely out of your character and then having feats to back up what you've done. For example, Batman COULD be the greatest killer in the DC Universe as he knows many fatal techniques and is a weapons master but he's not the greatest killer as he's got that no kill rule. Yes Batman's methods are different but his goals and ambitions are also different from Doom's as well. Also, Batman is not John Constantine, he may be very cunning but he's not able to manipulate everyone he comes to contact with like John Con. See Doom doesn't need help or allies to do all of that, he does all that with his own brilliant mind, birth right and resources and even if Bruce had accesses to allies, I feel that each and everyone of them would fall before Doom. I also feel that is a bit of a cop out saying Batman would need access to allies to equal Doom and even then, I don't see many beings that are able to stand up to Doom's Magick/Science. Hell, there's not many characters that can stand up to Doom with prep and all of them are Godlike. The only ally that can truly help Batman would be John Constantine as I see him as the only one in the DC U who can beat Doom in a prep battle. And JC (pre 52) and Batman aren't exactly the best of friends lol and also Doom is much more manipulative than Batman, during Secret Wars when all of earths heroes were being played like Pawns in Chess, Doom took it upon himself to become the true puppet master in the end and defeated not only Galactus but the Beyonder and take their power as he became the most powerful being in te Marvel Universe. And he did all this with nothing, being thrown on an empty planet with no resources, no allies, nothing. Just his suit, cunning and intellect.
        As for that last bit with Grant Morrison's JLA run and Batman being tortured by Desaad, I would like to specify that, that is non-canon as it takes place in an alternate future/reality. That would be the same as me bringing up feats of Doom 2099 or Ultimate Doom. So I wouldn't count that feat and when I said Hell, I didn't mean Apocalypse, I meant the litteral Hell where every moment he was being tortured by a legion of Demons while having his flesh, bones, lips burned off repeatedly by Hellfire as he still showed no sighn of pain or anguish.

        I can't edge Doom on will power. There's been too many instances in the 20 years of reading Batman where I've seen his will being the most powerful of his arsenal. And Rock of Ages only became an alternate reality at the conclusion.
        Can Doom 2099 even be considered? They teetered so much if it was him or an altered bodyguard. Battleworld wasn't exactly "empty". The Beyonder created it with swatches from other planets. I recall Doom having access to advance technology just like the heroes did. Hell, he used it to create Volcana & Titania. He figured out the technology, sure, but it's not like he was in some barren wasteland & created a fusion reactor MacGyver style.
        Doom has the intellect to develop his own time machine or figuring out magic. Batman still has access to time machines & mystic masters to study (if he didn't hate magic.) It comes down to (as you stated before) ambition. Batman has access to alter time or add magic to his arsenal, but doesn't have the ambition to. His preparations are based on his own ambition.
        Also not convinced Constantine's ability to manipulate people (ask Grayson how many times he's been manipulated by Batman) makes him a superior prepper. If that's the case, Kent Allard should be sitting well atop that mountain.
        Any con artist (or someone who spent years studying human behavior) will tell you it's easy to manipulate people. It's all about figuring out what makes the specific target tick.

        I'm actually surprised you brought up Rock of Ages. I always thought you dispised Grant Morrison's Batman. I still wouldn't count Rock of Ages or that feat, it would be the same as me bringing up Days of Future Past Wolverine or something along the lines (the comic not the film) It's non canon.
        I'll also concede with the Battle World point that he wasn't put on a Planet with nothing however, the thing that stands out to me the most is how fast Doom adapted to his environment and how everyone else was being played while Doom wasn't interested in playing their game. He had higher ambitions, he saw an opertunity at Godlike power and he took his shot. Granted he did fail in the end (he's the villain, he has to fail) I still find it very impressive.
        Batman may have acces to time machines but not many are anywhere near as advanced as Doom is in Time physics. I showed you a scan earlier of Doom's castle being blown up and then he non chalantly takes a time cube built into his suit and reasembled his castle and then walks inside his castle like nothing happend. Also like I said previously, Bruce can not have the ability to practice Magick as he doesn't have the bloodline. He can practice extremely basic Magick but nowhere near Doom's level. He'd probably need the helmet of Doctor Fate to even stand a chance but if he every put that helmet on, he wouldn't be Batman anymore, he'd be Doctor Fate. One of the many things that makes Doom so dangerous is the fact that he combines Science and Sorcery. Like I said, Doom undeniably has much more versitility than Batman does. Hell, if Doom really wanted to, he could switch minds with Bats just by making eye contact.
        As for Constantine, Constantine's prep often involves his wit, manipulation, and Magick. Batman doesn't have the same morals as Constantine. JC is basically a likeable scumbag. And no, Batman's manipulation isn't on JCs level. The only reason Bats is able to manipulate Dick Grayson is because Dick trusts him. JC can walk up to a random stranger on the street and make them his pawn. Never mind the fact that JC has manipulated Demons, the First of the Fallen about 7 times, Arch Angels (the most powerful beings in te DC Universe) and God himself. JC can do what Batman and Doom can in 5 minutes. In fact if someone gave JC the mission of saving the world in a month, you know what he'd do? He'd spend 30 days getting shitfaced in a bar and on the last day of the last hour, he'd come up with a brilliant plain to save the world. JC is a master of improvisation. Batman's great at being a Detective but he should leave the prep work to the World's Greatest Conman
        I'd also like to add that I have studied non verbal communication and psychology (not to a collage degree but through lots and lots of independent study) and I agree, it is very easy to predict human behavior once you know the system but Batman has never shown manipulation on John Constantine's level. He's only shown that he is extremely cunning when he needs to be. But until the day comes where Bats is able to con God himself, I think I'd give JC the most cunning. The only person id put above JC in terms of prep, cunning and manipulation is Lucifer Morning but he's kind of omnipotent so I try no to count him.

        I do dislike Morrison's Batman...when hes the focal character. I'm not a Morrison fan, but enjoyed his run on JLA. There were other characters he could add his "touch" on that seemed okay to be added. When he was just writing Batman, he had all focus & Morrison's "touch" didn't work for me.
        Doom does seem adaptable. I will say, Batman shows signs of being adaptable (and "think on his feet"), but because of his preparation, he doesn't have to adapt as often.

        Actually Miguel's character felt darker to me. Terry's wittiness in the face of danger, avenging his father's killer, trying to have a personal life all seemed to be right out of the Peter Parker handbook.

        The whole futistic aspect was taken right out of the 2099 Universe. And If you notice his costume looks a lot more similar to O'hara's than Parker's. Even though he was inspired by both Spiders, i honestly believe he's grown into his own character after a while and will always be a huge source of nostalgia for me

Furious 7 pits the Rock against the Stath, which is great since he'll be at the forefront of a massive blockbuster, and it makes me wonder, who could the Stath play in DC? Marvel wise, Bullseye all day, just think Crank.
As for Tyrese playing GL... I think the reason he wants to goes beyond playing a superhero and getting richer. I think his character dies in Furious 7. He's trying to pull a Gal Gadot.

        Well I imagine GL would show up in JL 1 or 2 or both. These movies will do for GL what no movie did for the first GL: guarantee its success. Now how good it will be I don't know, but honestly, I feel like if the RR movie were released now rather than back then, he'd still be playin em, cuz people are flocking to CBMs like no time before. Same for The Incredible Hulk.

I want to see him take on Shazam / TOCM first! Maybe Adam can crossover but I'd like to see the brighter, more cheerful "Earth S" established in the Shazam movies before that happens.

  Wow. You and I might be the only two people that didn't connect with Guardians of the Galaxy. Most of the critics, comic book fans, and the general audience, loved it. If the humor is done well, it can disguise many flaws that comic book movies often have. Such as; weak villains, weak plot, "too much" CGI. But humor done poorly could lead to the end of the universe............

      You have no idea what the movie-verse for Shazam will be like. Supes and Shazam have been on the animated screen and comics many times before and mesh extremely well.

      Well, considering that they included him in the JL:WAR movie... which is based on the NEW 52 iteration, nullifies your argument there.

      And I haven't seen either of those movies so I can't attest to their tone but I can tell you this, I know those films financially underperformed, so to look at two failed films for inspiration seems unlikely. They will attempt to create a tone of their own (if they are smart)...or at least a tone that can mesh with the other films if need be.
      For example, the GL movie was so out of tone with all other DC films, they couldn't save it if they wanted to.

    Nothing is official until the studio announces it. Last we heard, from the team behind Shazam, was that they were concerned about telling a self contained story and not so much tying it in to an established mythos. So, it was fair to assume that Shazam as a solo movie may have nothing to do with what MoS established as the base for future films. So, no... not obvious.

        Yes, Tsujihara did announce the movies... as well as a slew of other movies. He did not add a disclaimer mentioning whether or not they would fall within the same universe. He simply said, this is when these movies will come out. "This is our movie slate". By your logic, the lego Batman movie would be part of the DCCU as well.
        Last announcement directly tied to Shazam was that it was to be done by New Line (a subsidiary), not WB like the other DC films announced, that it will have a separate tone and feel than the other movies and a specific mention that Shazam is not a Justice League member.
        So, again, despite Shazam being announced by Tsujihara... along side Harry Potter & the Lego movies... there has been no information to tie Shazam back to the DCCU...
        ...until now.

        There's no way they'll meet that ridiculous schedule. The only way is if they had them all scripted, cast, and production team contracted already.
