Batman Returns' Danny DeVito praises Gotham's Penguin -- Robin Lord Taylor

Robin Lord Taylor instantly became a fan favorite when Gotham premiered last fall, for his excellent performance as Oswald Cobblepot... aka the Penguin. So what does Danny DeVito, who played Penguin in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, think? He's a fan! Here's what he told Access Hollywood yesterday at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour:

"I've watched the show. I think he's a very good young Penguin. He's a terrific actor."

When asked if he'd be interested in appearing on Gotham, DeVito didn't seem too excited, though he didn't flat out say 'no' either. "I don't know about that. Again, it's all about the schedules and the parts and like how the thing is written and what it would be and there are so many particulars," he said.

FOX just announced that they've renewed Gotham for a second season. A brand new episode airs tonight.

Good for him. I've never had an interest in Gotham, but I bet that's awesome for the actor to hear that from DeVito.

pretty standard opinion if you ask me; what pretty much any actor would say when asked about another actor's take on a shared character. one also has to consider that de vito's penguin had nothing to do with DC's penguin, the former was a product of tim burton's quite damaged mind...

Thats gotta be an awesome thing to hear from someone who played the part before :D

I always wondered how it would have been if they had Danny Devito play Penguin like he was moreso in the comics and in Gotham instead of Tim Burton's version. Hes one of those guys thats just kinda perfect for the role either way :)

Try to look it up on your devices dictionary... it does not come this way (Returns's) but that way (Returns'). And by the way I don't see anywhere in the Bible where it says Jesus's but Jesus'.

you add the second s if it's pronounced with a second s (like Jones's). Unless you say Returns-es (and you might because it could be colloquial), it does not need another s.
technically neither does Jones, but again, it depends on how you speak. common English grammar these days typically omits the second s because it really is redundant, but it's technically not incorrect unless you're writing for a specific style guide.

I've heard Robin Lord Taylor say in publicity interviews that his interpretation of Oswald was inspired in part by DeVito's. I think it really shows. They have the same ambiguous sincerity. You hear their respective sob stories and you want to feel sorry for them -- but you get the subtle sense that their characters aren't broken up about their past so much as they are interested in using it to manipulate others. Both actors are excellent at making you question their motives.

Man I know I'm probably going to be called out for saying this, but I hated Batman Returns. Devito, Pfifer, Wlaken and the rest gave great performances, but that movie was awful. The concept of both the Penguin and Catwoman was bad (especially Catwoman's creation) and the city didn't look good. Also DJ Bruce Wayne?? Personally I think Batman Forever was a better movie, not a great one, but better than Batman Returns.

I think he was being a little diplomatic for his second answer. At least that is how it reads. He doesn't want to get tangled into things that have not been scheduled and signed and all that speculation. If he did make a cameo, it would probably be a 1 episode thing where the two cross roads

In terms of longevity and originality performance wise devito by far exceeds this glorified soap star whose fifteen minutes has expired IMO with that laughable interpretation.
