Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones had great chemistry as The Riddler and Two-Face in Batman Forever, but that didn't follow them off-screen.

Carrey was on The Howard Stern Show yesterday morning and revealed that he didn't get along with Tommy Lee Jones at all on the set of Batman Forever.

"I walked into a restaurant the night before our big scene in The Riddler's lair. The [waiter] said 'you're working with Tommy Lee Jones aren't ya? He's in the back corner'. I said 'oh great, I'll go say hi'. I went up to say hi and the blood drained from his face in such a way that I realized that I've become the face of his pain. He got up, kind of shaking, and hugged me and said 'I hate you. I really don't like you'. I was like 'wow, ok. What's going on man?'. He said 'I cannot sanction your buffoonery'."

    lol thats hilarious. Did Tommy Lee not realize what type of movie he was making? He did quite a bit of "buffoonery" himself as Two Face.

      Not having listened to the audio, I'm guessing that Carrey was probably quite a character when the cameras were off as well, and that that was what Jones, a Serious Actor, was talking about.

      Nah i guess his has a good, expensive agent who gave him a heads up on a popular part with success written alll over it!!
      His agent probably told him that he'd hate it and that he'd never ever consider playing the buffoon...'money is money' and after Jones last film flopped 'you needed a hit!'

    Jim Carrey was great in this movie. This movie doesn't hold up so well over time, but I believe that the Riddler is the single, shining, redeeming value to this movie. It's kind of a Joker/Riddler, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's like the best of both worlds becoming it's own villain.

    Tommy Lee Jones couldn't sanction Carrey's buffoonery? That's ironic because Two-Face's buffoonery, really hurt Batman Forever. That being said, Batman Forever is STILL pretty awesome! Nicole Kidman was SO hot in that movie!

    It's strange because I always got the impression that Jones was trying to out-Carrey Carrey with his own strange brand of buffoonery. Jones would have been better served playing Dent straight – good & evil but not maniacal – and let Carrey do his schtick. It was bad enough to see Carrey in that role. It didn't help seeing Jones trying to echo him.

      Lol I immediately thought of this too, like, whose the unsanctioned buffoon here?

      At least Carrey came off as that he knew what he was doing even though it clearly wasn't what many wanted (which is Jim Carrey as the Riddler). But Jones couldn't crack a smile at that Golden Globe award a while back either. Honestly, obviously I don't know the man, but he doesn't come off as a particularly kind individual.

      It was either super methodically sarcasm, or unwarranted. Because no matter how much weird stuff Carrey does in the public eye, I remain convinced he's a really nice guy, especially professionally.

        I can see Jones being the kind of performer who's thinking, "Okay, Dent and Riddler really shouldn't get along, so to create tension on set tomorrow, I'll create tension with Jim today."

        I can also see Carrey and his antics getting really irritating, especially to a guy like Jones. At least when Carrey's on TV, you have the option of turning the channel. Imagine working with that 12–14 hours a day.

        At least it wasn't mutual.

          I'm sorry but, even if you are annoyed. Jim was hired for a job and he did what he was supposed to do excellently. The fact that Schoemacher cast an actor beside him that apparently doesn't have the flexibility to even stay polite when somebody's just saying hello to a fellow cast member is not Jim's fault in any way. I want proof before I believe Jim Carreuy warrants this response due to offset behaviour.

          I can see it being entirely an act, but man. I wonder how Will Smith got along.

            Well, Jones has denied any friction while Carrey continues to rag on Jones.

            It's pretty clear to me who has the grudge, and considering this was the film that catapulted Carrey to superstardom, I'm not sure why he's being so... publicly impolite about a private moment.

            There's clearly friction here. Whether it's made by Jim or Jones either way, Jones is dodging commentary if he denies friction. Saying that Carrey's at fault just because Jones claims there's no issue is naive.

            And it's a funny anecdote. Easy to see why Jim was like whatever, I'll throw it out there almost 20 years after the fact.

            Carrey was calling Jones a "pain in the åss" back in '95 while Jones was saying, "I had a lot of fun working with Jim Carrey. Being a wild, crazy cartoon character was something that I really loved and I could not have been in better company." If anyone needs to let it go it's Carrey.

            Now I'm not suggesting that the friction was one-sided. Everything I'd read about Jones is that he's intense. I'm just saying that Jones is being a lot more professional about it. Jones never slammed his co-star the way Carrey's been doing for 20 years now.

            But does that make the truth fairer if it's true that Jones was the one being impolite during the shoot? And for who does Jones steer clear of the subject? For Carrey? Out of integrity? Or to protect his own reputation?

            Having said that, I did not know this strife has been public since it's inception. We all know Carrey is not tactical when it comes to his relationship with the press. Still doesn't say much about what ACTUALLY happened.

            It's in everyone's best interest to be a gentleman. Trash-talking your co-stars – justified or not – paints one in a negative light. If anything, Carrey's continued grudge only validates Jones' apparent disdain for the man. Since he's remained cordial when not completely silent about his experience, we can only imagine Jones' side of the story.

            All that said, it'd be a hoot to see them work together again.

By the time he did Batman Forever, he had already been on In Living Color and done the first Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber! His schtick as the Riddler was decidedly true-to-form, and if anything launched a "next stage" to his career it was The Truman Show. I love Batman films as much as anyone here, but I'm not going to claim that this one was anything other than a "point on the curve" for Jim Carrey.

    Does anybody believe that rumor with the 1920s Wonder Woman rumor? I think it's bullshit. Not the idea, the rumor itself and if it's true it's a risky move because the majority of the world doesn't know Wonder Woman did that World War II shit too and the critics might bitch and say "DC is copying Marvel".
