The Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Galloway interviewed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice producer Charles Roven and it's without a doubt the most in-depth and revealing conversation about the movie we've seen so far! I encourage you all to just go watch the video above, but here are some highlights from producer Charles Roven:

Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas are still executive producers.
Nolan is still involved at different stages in an advisory capacity. He was involved in the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman.
They wanted a very mature Batman, because they wanted to juxtapose him with Henry Cavill's young Superman.
They wanted a guy with big stature. Ben is 6' 3" or 6' 4". They wanted Batman to tower over Superman. They wanted Superman to have to look up to Batman.
Ben Affleck was the first actor they went to. He was their first choice.
Bruce Wayne is a much more social animal. Batman is an extremely rough guy. Very, very, very rough.
Man of Steel was made with the idea of expanding the universe and creating a world with other superheroes.
Wonder Woman is a demigod. Her father was Zeus.

      Batman will be so rough,dry and too hardcore. Like Batman: Arkham Origins trailer. He will not kill but he will interrogate thugs and break their bones at the same time,but not kill. I mean so scary,dangerous,extreme and so tough. They will show this Batman.

    I'm pretty sure the only reason they needed Batman to tower over Superman is because a performer can only look down in that mask.

      I believe it's also a mental aspect to it as well. It makes Batman look more intimidating (at least in the audience's eyes). Also, from a purely physical standpoint, in Batman's mind, he can kick his ass. It's an interesting way to look at it, usually Superman is bigger or they're close to the same size. This adds another layer to the relationship.

        Batman is actually larger than Superman in the books. Well, when he's portrayed correctly. I remember one Art Adams' Batman Annual in particular that nailed that aspect. Batman is as strong as human can get. He's muscle on muscles. Imposing. Dangerous. Scary. Superman has never had to work for it like Batman, so again, Ben is a great choice for the role as far as that goes.

        Not at all, they're usually the same height, when they're portrayed correctly, and they should be.
        If anything Superman should be taller since his kryptonian physiology should be effortlessly on peak form ALWAYS, growth hormones and all.

        If Superman wasn't intimidated by Nam-Ek, he won't be intimidated by Batman.
        Also, Batman is smart, he knows he can't kick Supes' ass.
        I don't see how it adds anything to the relationship.

        I never said Supes was going to be intimidated by him. I just said, in them audience's eyes he does, just from physical stature. Visually it's an interesting idea to see them toe to toe and Bruce is taller. However, I was wrong when I said from a purely physical standpoint Batman thinks he can kick his ass. It does add to the relationship though, in perception of character. Roven himself said it, "They wanted Superman to look up to Batman". Body language alone plays a part in it.

        I get what you're saying, but if they are going to have Batman go against Superman, he needs to at least look like he could do some damage, even though he's fighting basically a god. It's hard enough to believe Batman could even fight Superman, might as well have a Batman that at least looks like he could take him.

        Not arguing you with that. I just see it as an interesting visual to see them looking each other down and Supes has to look up. It really does play on the power idea. Obviously only visual though. Guess we'll see how it all turns out.

The news about Wonder Woman is the most exciting thing said there. that means they are using Azzarello's work to build his Wonder Woman, and for anyone what have head his stories know this is great news.

      It's a Natural comparison, they are who DC is competing with.
      It's not moot, Marvel has already shown magic characters and diluted them with sci-fi like Loki and Malekith, who was supposed to be the best wizard in the 9 realms, but nope, "magic is just science we don't understand".
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not detracting from either DC nor Marvel.

Interesting.
I have been a fan of Mr. Ben Affleck's works since I was a kid. I was mesmerised by some of his notable films like Pearl Harbour and Daredevil because I didn't know any better then. I've always thought about him being able to play Batman when I heard they would be replacing Bale in the DCCU. His chin I thought was a good facial feature for the caped crusader as well as his height. Very intriguing that Nolan himself was involved with the process of casting Ben Affleck as the first choice.

  There is lots of great actors,filmmakers etc who don't have Oscar. There is lots of who don't deserve but have Oscar or Oscars. So don't go always with Oscar. Yes,it is important. It add more attention but it doesn't mean if a great artist don't have Oscar he is not great. And Nolan can easily won best film and best director Oscars for TDK and Inception both. Spielberg,Cameron and lots of great filmmakers want that he won. Cameron also expressed his reaction for not giving Nolan Oscar for Inception. He critisize Academy. Academy is not always right. Actually maximum time wrong if you check the history from 1929 to 2014. And Nolan is best filmmaker of this era of filmmaking. Just look at his career. He will destroy Acdemy this time with Intersteller. Just wait. And if you go to Ben and say you are better filmmaker than Nolan he also laugh. Yeah,Ben is a talented and special artist. But not as talented as Nolan. Come on. Argo can't surpass Nolan's TDK,Inception legacy. There is also Memento,TDK trilogy,The Presige,Insomnia like incredible works. Distance is huge buddy between them.

Random Thoughts:
- I've always pictured Bruce being a little taller than Clark. It's not like Superman can't hover over Batman anytime he wants.
- Not sure how I feel about Greek gods being used in this but if it's handled as well as the Norse gods in Thor films, I approve.
- Hard to imagine Nolan having anything to do with this when he was so vocal about being against so many aspects of the DCU (magic, other heroes, Robin).
- "Rough?" My batpole is so hard right now.

    I can't say I'm in love with the New52 origin change for Diana. Now she's just another illegitimate kid of Zeus'? That's so lame compared to her mother sculpting her from clay and being imbued with the traits of all her Amazon sisters, just like the American melting pot. I'm much happier with the gods of Olympus gifting her those powers of flight and speed and invulnerability.
    But yes, bring on the magic. That is, after all, one of Superman's weaknesses.

If Ben is really about 6'4", he'll end up being around 6'5" or 6'6" with the boots on.
Also, considering how large and built Ben is (just look at him at the end of Gone Girl, he looks fucking massive), this Batman will definitely be one of the most physically intimidating Batman(Batmen?) on screen.

        I have to agree with him. They are not doing a retelling of the comics they just use it as a source, so they are separate. Also batman beating the whole justice league is dumb when the Cinematic universe is just starting and grabbing hype. Maybe a few years later they can explore that storyline but not now.

        I don't think that Batman defeating the entire Justice League, is dumb at all. It's freakin' fascinating. And movies being separate from the comics, is inaccurate. If parts of the source material, is being used. Then it's NOT "separate". And no, I don't expect Tower of Babel to be adapted, in the first Justice League movie. A lot more would need to be established, first.

  Why do people say Batman defeated the JL? People who haven't read TOB or watched JL :Doom would think The JL fought Batman and he beat them. He had a plan to "neutralize" them incase they went rouge. The JL (Batman's friends) were minding their own business and trust Bats as an ally when Bats created the plan. Then the plans were STOLEN from genius Bats and enhanced to be more deadly. In fact, in JL :Doom, Bats was being buried alive by Bane the same time as the Savage used the plan to attack the JL....but no, Batman fans say Batman beat the JL like the JL was against him or attacked him. He did nothing to implement the plans. I like what GL said at the end of Doom: "I have no problem with Batman's plan but having them stolen is pretty damn STUPID" . After this story, I didn't think : hey, Bats is genius and badass. I thought this is a paranoid guy who just put his friends in danger.Stop saying he defeated the JL, No one fought him or attacked him...jeez...
  So, tell me, HOW DID BATMAN DEFEAT THE JL? Was there a fight? Who attacked Batman?
  ..and "Batman could have implemented the plan himself" is not an answer because he didn't!!!

    It's just a matter of interpretation. But I think that 99.9% of the human population, would consider "neutralizing" the same as "defeating". He came up with plans to take them out, if anything EVER went down. Since those plans were pretty successful. He defeated them. And the meme says by accident. Which adds to the whole dangerous man on the planet thing.

      What interpretation? There's no ambiguity in this, it pretty clear! You say he "came up" with plans like they are not friends. Of course he knows their weaknesses. It would have been a defeat as Batfans claim if the JL was actually against him, or attacking him. Again, the plans were stolen and ENHANCED to be deadly. Yeah, he's a dangerous man but he didn't defeat the JL. THEY WEREN'T TRYING TO FIGHT HIM OR TAKE HIM OUT. He had nothing to do with the execution of the plan. Nothing!

        In the MCU, Thor is from another planet or "realm" with superior technology. Their race is stronger than humans and live centuries longer, but they are not gods. This is mentioned many times.
        The explanation from the first Thor film was that they visited earth via wormholes long ago and the Norsemen took them as "gods" because of their great powers (which is actually technology). So it was not magic. It was technology and superior strength.
        For the record, I have the same concern with Marvel introducing Dr. Strange to the MCU

        There's precedent for Bruce not inventing/building his gear. In the Zero Hour issues, he shutdown the weapons division of his company, then took the stuff. That was before Begins was even thought for Nolan.
        And I always find the "it's in the video games" retort ridiculous. I rank the content of the video games right above the adventures created by playing with the action figures & the fan films on YouTube. It's like using an episode of a cartoon as the grounds for an opinion or example.
        Worse is when someone tries to use the video games to trump the source material.

It's another to completely change the nature of the character from human to something else entirely. Plus, to make the arch-feminist argument, this also changes a key piece of the subtext of the character, namely that she came into being without male involvement. It's an arbitrary change for the sake of change.
  So far as "fan boy" goes, I'll just say that I haven't talked to anyone under the age of 30 who thinks New 52 is any good.

      there's no satisfying us fans is there. I understand that desire for it to be more intense, but remember there was a scene where catwoman was persuading him to getaway with her and said he gave the city everything he had. ti which he replied, "no everything, not yet" meaning he hadn't given his life. I did this last month and looked at all the 3 films I always catch something I miss.
