The first photo of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was revealed at Comic-Con last month and fans seem to really like it. One person who isn't as impressed is the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. Carter is best known for playing Wonder Wonder in the 1970s TV show, and told Access Hollywood what she thought of Gal Gadot and her new costume:

Well, I was missing the red, white and blue, I have to say... I don't know. I haven't seen it yet, so I really can't comment. Maybe there's a lot more color in it than what we saw in the picture. It's almost impossible to play a superhero anyway. You can't. You just have to play a character that happens to do these amazing things. That's the only way you can do it. And the costumes all take care of themselves, but it was a little more – I'll have to wait and see. I hate to comment on something that I haven't seen and I'm very supportive of Gal Gadot. I'm very supportive of them doing Wonder Woman, putting her in any capacity. I think she needs to be out there. ... It's high time somebody took a chance and did it and so I'm really happy about that.

      That picture you posted looks faithful to Wander Woman's iconic costume. Wonder Woman should wear the classic iconic authentic costume as creators William Moulton Marston and Harry Peter intended, as Lynda Carter wore. As Lynda Carter said about Gal Gadot's Xena costume: "Well, I was missing the red, white and blue, I have to say." Armor should retain the iconic Wonder Woman essence of color and stars, etc. Not Xena armor. Wonder Woman wore battle armor in the Perez update when needed. It did not replace her iconic costume. It retained the iconic Wonder Woman essence of wearing the American flag, the Wonder Woman color scheme, etc. as the creators intended. So it's still recognizably Wonder Woman and not a bastardization.

I think her costume should be more colorful. However, I also think Carter is right to say we shouldn't leap to judgment on something we haven't seen. It may be that this is an early version of her costume on Themiscyra, and that after she takes up residence among humans and learns to trust them she adopts a new variation on the costume. Heck, a lot of things could happen.
I don't think the Snyder costume is ugly by any means, just bland. But I'll wait and see.

  Also, you can definitely see red, yellow, and blue on the costume, but the pic is so desaturated it is hard to make it out. It may look brighter in film.

    Agreed. Also, Snyder loves teasing us with stylized images, so expect imagery that's black & white, toned down or filtered.

I respect LC, but I feel like this criticism isn't thought out. Why would an Amazon princess warrior, who's coming to America for, most likely, the first time, already have adopted the red, white, and blue colors of the nation??

  Totally agreed. I think they may brighten the colors in the sequel, much like how they already did with Cavill's Superman outfit for this movie.
  Also Superman and WW have a similar color scheme and I think it's good for them to have different color tones in their outfits.

    Yup, I agree with both of your points. Hopefully Supes will be the beacon of Hope that everyone wants to see and she'll be inspired by that and slightly change her uniform.

  The reason they give in the comics is that's its a sign of respect for the nation they're visiting. But the armor was forged long before WW ever came to "man's world" so that excuse is rather flimsy. I like the darker colors, they could leave it the way it was in the picture and I'd still be happy

    The original original wasn't even armor, it was clothing specifically made in the colors of the USA since she was being sent to fight on America's side against the Nazis. An updated version could say it was the coat of arms of Themyscira; lots of eagles in heraldry, the WW logo could be Zeus ' s lightning bolts, and the stars could be the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters.

  I don't think a reason even needs to be given. A reason was never given for red, yellow, and blue in Man of Steel. It's just what color his costume is.
  Same with Wonder Woman. Have her wearing red and blue at least. It doesn't need a reason. It would just look closer to the comics and people would be happier.

  Stop over thinking it. It was a comic strip in the 40's. Why should they f%ck everything up that stood the test of time like she is Barbie or something? That costume is Wonder Woman . Anyone who thinks otherwise is an A-HOLE. Gal Gadot looks retarded being called Wonder Woman when she looks like Gabrielle or Xena. I would say Gabrielle since at least Xena had a buff warrior body.

At least Gadot look like she knows what good is. Also, Carter's underwear part looks all puffy like it's actually a nappy. Wonder Woman is a warrior, so in terms of that aspect I think Snyder mailed her costume.

They're muted colors, more tribal like an Amazonian would wear. They still have the look of a ceremonial uniform a princess would wear while still looking combat ready.
That or Lynda Carter is just upset about Gal making her do the Ice Bucket Challenge and just wanted to rib the look a little.

Well, one woman (Lynda Carter) looks like a freakin' porn parody character. And the other woman (Gal Gadot) looks like an Amazonian warrior, ready to kick some A$$! Gadot's costume is NOT all brown! It's red, blue, gold and silver.

        The images of the cape & cowl from SDCC look very black. It'd look...odd if the cape & cowl were black, with blue gloves & boots.

      I like Dirty Harry, but those movies are signs of its time.

Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman was a shame! A slap to that great character. From any angle her health is not look like Wonder Woman. She is a great warrior. In which part Lynda looks warrior? Her all pose! Looks like she is a cosplayer. Just wear her favorite characters costume and walk around. Gal will show Wonder Woman's real side.

      You could say the exact same thing about West's Batman or Reeves' Superman. They were signs of their times. Those interpretations weren't trying to follow the source material to the letter, but rather family entertainment.
      30 years from now a new generation of comic book readers will look at Gadot's WW and claim the same thing you are about Carter's.

        Reeves did have to bulk up. He auditioned and had to bulk up. You're fight about West but what people don't understand is that Lynda Carter and Gal Gadot are the same size expect for breasts. Also Lynda Carter is not a good actress (at least at the time) and people say Gal Gadot can't act. However, even though Carter couldn't act well (she could act but not as bad as Stephen Amell) she's still considered a legend to me. Why don't people "wait and see" for Gadot instead of judging her? I know this is off topic but still

        Yeah, I think in general if the Trinity were played in this movie the exact same way as it was with each of those actors, it'd fail today.
        I agree about Gadot. I have my concerns about the casting, but I want to see the movie before I past judgment. She at least deserves a chance.

      At the time the show was made, neither it nor the comics made a point of her being a warrior. Quite the opposite, in fact: she was in Man's World to spread the message of peace and love and universal sisterhood that the Amazons had adopted. Yes, she could fight, but it was something she could do if she had to, not the key to her soul.

I dig the new costume -- most superhero costumes are designed for comic books. When you adapt something for the big screen you need to ADAPT it. Not just bring it over as is.

She's 63 years old and still doing stuff, you see a lot of older people that did TV shows retire a long time ago. http://www.lyndacartersings... I just took a quick glance at her web-site when I looked up her age. The Wonder Woman show was from 1975 to 1979. The concept of Wonder Woman's suit I thought was as a diplomacy act to send out a message of Paradise Island's peace in trying to learn and connect with the American culture, in learning that new social nature and understand it. It might have different meaning now. She's more like a Greek Goddess heroine as opposed to a superhero, and they need to bleed in a deeper nature to the superheroes to make them into something more than superheroes. She's going out into the world outside of her nation, but unlike the other Amazons she also did training and learning with the male Greek Gods outside of Paradise Island, and it was planned that she would take on a lot more than even her mother with how she was raised. That's where Marvel's and Image's great success comes from, is that they got away from that since the 1980s with it being bland superheroes. DC did that alot with Batman in the 1980s where it started like that in the 1940s before it became campy, lots of Batman stories, Watchmen, Lobo, in the 1990s with The Reign of the Supermen, Kingdom, and Kingdom Come. They can still have a lot of superhero qualities. They were still kind of there but they were able to take it to new places. Batman is a billionaire businessman, as is Lex Luthor but is also a high class criminal, Superman is an extraterrestrial living on Earth, Superboy is a marvel of science spliced from Lex Luthor's and Superman's DNA made into a global celebrity with high level scientific study, research, and training at the Project Cadmus genetic research facility, Shazam is a child, Lobo is an intergalactic bounty hunter that's also a genius artistic alien, Supergirl is an extraterrestrial who wants to get somewhat involved with Earth and with Justice League since her cousin Cal-El is there, there must be a Kryptonian outpost out there she came from, etc. They can mix in more with the Greek culture with hidden links such as Lex Luthor has a statue of Zeus, and he directly talks to Zeus who's apart of the Quintessence. Zeus may not have ill intentions like Lex Luthor, but Zeus keeps links because he sees benefits to what Lex Luthor can do, and the world needs to continue to be molded by dealing with some evil, but Zeus sees Lex Luthor offering a lot more than just evil. Zeus isn't evil, but he has a different way of looking at it, he doesn't follow in evil principals like Lex Luthor, but Zeus can be very harsh and punishing in his Greek God ways. This can follow into the comic storyline where Billy Batson goes to learn with Lex Luthor and fight for him, they join with Gog and Magog, and with the radical metahumans. The Quintessance gave Gog his abilities like Billy Batson but a lot more varied, and then Gog took it alot further with his own scientific research to be worshiped as God, all hail Gog. Magog believes in what he does, and he's valiant but radical, it leaves a path of destruction including a nuclear disaster. That can lead into Kingdom and Kingdom come, if DC continues this for over a decade they may save that for a later date but progressively lead into it and plan in advance. Billy Batson is also apart of the Quintessence. This questions the deeper nature of good and evil, and what is it. Lex Luthor isn't just a lowly criminal, and he has a lot of genius ideas. Billy Batson also needs to learn that dark world, as well as the light world of Lex Luthor's knowledge. Billy Batson can begin with the Justice League, and then eventually join with Lex Luthor. The Quintessence if I remember also deals in intergalactic affairs and extraterrestrials, where Zeus and the rest of the Quintessence are taking it many steps higher than his Greek culture, he may have partially gotten this idea from Hippolyta where she wanted to expand by sending out Wonder Woman to the world. Diana Prince doesn't know it but Zeus is her father, and she's 100% Greek Goddess. This explores the qualities of the radicals, and the more foundational wisdom of the non-radical superbeings. They can add in Supergirl and Superboy into those much later storylines so we get youthful beings that fight on the side of the non-radical superbeings, so we can see that youthful learning on that side too, since they show the youthful distorted viewpoint of the radicals. Supergirl can date Lex Luthor which parallels Supergirl's pure nature, and Lex Luthor's nature. Lex Luthor chooses a higher light temporarily when he's with her, but at the time he wanted to try something different.

I'd have to read more into monogamy and polygamy with them. This was different because by tradition they would pass on their higher genetics, but mortals weren't allowed to do it because they have much weaker genetics, and they have a different evolutionary chemistry that tells them not to do that with their weaker genetics level. When higher beings reproduce with family members it doesn't weaken their genetics like it does mortals. Soul mates will be born closer to eachother such as brother and sister. In planetary civilizations with much more completed DNA than Earth humans, soul mates may be born closer to eachother such as brother and sister, I don't know if those advanced races do that because they're not higher beings and I don't know if it goes against their chemistry evolution. Earth humans haven't developed the DNA yet to do that, and I'd still highly question how that's done as I'm not completely sure. If an Earth human has children with a sibling, there's a high chance the child could come out mentally retarded, and with a cousin there's less of a chance but the child could still come out very deficient. In Europe the royal order has much further distance family orders marry eachother and have children, but they're usually much further away than cousins. In that story Zeus got impatient with Wonder Woman and had expectations with her because of it, and Wonder Woman declined so she had to take on Zeus's challenges. Wonder Woman takes on the challenges so that she can keep a platonic loving relationship with her father, and if she declined she would have had to fight him and be punished which she would take on but she doesn't want to ruin the relationship she has with her father and with her links with the Greek Gods. She disagrees with them on things and opposes them in ways, but she still has a certain relationship and integrity with them she wants to maintain. She didn't have a weird outlook to Zeus asking her to be his lover, because their culture is different, so is their genetic instincts and chemistry, so it was common in their culture. Wonder Woman may have also been influenced by America's monogamy and their further distance from family members since she adopted that culture. This goes into a strong part of the Greek God culture to add to the mythos and science. Outside of that, with other things of the Greek God culture the movies need to get more into such as evolving their stories which I haven't seen them give the Greek God culture good writing when it comes to the DC series. I think the Greek Gods are amalgamations of extraterrestrials and higher beings but I get different information. I didn't know if they were based on the Annunaki, Ascended Mortals, Adamics, or Andites or an amalgamation of them and many others. They can be more harsh in their nature, but this is also to do with their dealing with other races and how they maintain a structure and get things done. You could say the American image is to follow certain morality, but they blindly do this and ignore their deeper natures so it's became an unconscious system that leaves them weak, where they're good because of social control instead of questioning things. Greek Gods are more into their primal nature, but see it as a way of understanding in their instincts. Either system has it's pros and cons, and the Greek Gods are still learning. The Greek Goddesses are still learning too. They've also had to maintain their ways because of the challenges their cultures face. But with Americans and the rest of the world they should always look at science with cause and effect, and with the meaning so because higher beings do it doesn't mean they should do it, as higher beings have their teachings, structure, system, and their own issues. Wonder Woman has been saving her virginity for almost two thousand years.

Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman was great for it's time, but it's not like she's an expert on 2014 WW just because she played a version of the character for a few years 4 decades ago. I don't see why people always have to go ask these people what they think. What do Adam West or Lynda Carter know about playing these characters today? Nothing.

Not only can she be an inspiration for young girls to want to be strong and independent, she also draws in a female audience to the comic world. Drawing in another demographic = a larger audience = more exposure and money for DC.
