Exactly. DC/WB movies will be darker than Marvel movies in tone, but it is impossible to have a movie with zero jokes. Even the Nolan trilogy had a few jokes here and there. Are they going to make a Guardians of the Galaxy type movie? No. Are they going to make a movie with absolutely zero humor? Of course not! Really, how can you have the Flash in a movie and not have jokes? It's impossible!

  I'm not saying I want a Marvel-style D.C. comedy. I just think they could use a little more of a lighter touch. The moody stuff works for Batman alone, but considering these new films are going to incorporate a flying alien, a man who dresses as a bat, a warrior princess, a man with a magic ring and all those other things, there's no way in hell I want to see a straight drama.

      I liked how it was, few humorous scenes here and there. It needed to be grim, because you can't just start making jokes and helping people when you don't even know them. That might sound different - not helping random people - if your PoV is that of an Earthling, but it might sound true if you look at it like an alien. :P

      The whole tone of the thing just didn't do anything for me. I don't want them to go all Marvel but I also think Man Of Steel, for what it is, went too far in the other direction. It's at the opposite end of the spectrum. Like I said, it worked for Batman in that self-contained trilogy, but this being something completely separate I really think they should try and find a happy medium.

      Somewhere along the line, someone at DC got the idea that Hal Jordan should be a jackass. I don't know where it came from, but between Justice League: War, the GL movie itself, and The Lego Movie, Hal turned into comic relief. Personally, I was happier when he had a stick up his ass.

    (At The Dark Knight) I agree with what you're saying but I think Marvel did a great job at doing a serious film when they did Winter Soldier. Marvel can make it happen, and I don't think DC trying a more lighthearted film would be a disaster even if they don't give it a shot. They would just need the writers for it.

Man of Steel had moments of humor, subtle, but it was there. I believe that, IF this is true, it means that they don't want moments where the Justice League goes to eat shawarma after defeating Darkseid. I mean, this site reported that Bruce would say 'I'm kind of a night person'. So there will be moments of humor, but not joke after joke.

You're right. It's just someone who wanted to state the obvious. The Marvel films prioritize humor in their films. Warner Brothers' last two comic book directors, don't. There's no one "RIGHT WAY" to make a successful comic book film. The goal is to try to make an entertaining flick, with comic book characters in it. But apparently, everybody LOVES humor, in their comic book movies! So, whatever.

  I wouldn't mind seeing a tiny bit more funny moments, in the Man of Steel sequel (Batman v. Space Jesus). But humor can be tricky. Sometimes it can backfire, like; Batman & Robin, Green Lantern, The Jessica Alba led Fantastic Four films, Peter Parker dancing in Spider-Man 3, etc.

      Spider-man 3 is essentially the Godfather 3...nobody likes to talk about it. That moment was so crowbarred into the series it weakened the moment. The real weight came in the first one.
      Nice switch up there. We went from a discussion of the two, to an argument about whose right & wrong. Well played.

I think this has been blown out of proportion. I bet it has to do with tone more than moments of levity. You can have a serious film, and make moments of humor work in favor of the story. Look at ARGO, which was written by Chris Terrio (writing BvS) and was Directed by Affleck. It was an extremely serious movie with high stakes, but still had moments peppered in to break up the tension. If they're used in that way, it's perfect because it doesn't sacrifice tone for laughs. TDK Trilogy and MOS had the same kind of tone.

People forget how funny the dark knight actually was. I watched it again and found a ton of jokes I forgot about. The humor just wasn't the typical one liner that action movies usually have. Obviously batman never joked around, but when Bruce Wayne wasn't in the costume and was with Alfred or Lucius he could be pretty funny, and obviously joker had moments that were really funny.

I hope this isn't true cause I seriously can't imagine Hal Jordan or Wally West on film and not cracking a joke, at all. it's a part of what makes those characters so great. They'd suck all the charisma out of them. Also why has this been such big news?? (no offense to Batman-news) but I keep seeing this article pop up on so many sites. I hope it's just a silly rumor or a joke that someone made and they took it as confirmation for something.

Also I hope they don't take some of the comedic aspects of Superman and batman's relationship out, such as Batman referring to him as a boy scout or how Batman won't shake a persons hand and can be out right rude or disappearing while people are talking (That makes me laugh no matter how many times someone does it).

I'm really glad they're not going the way Marvel is. I haven't seen Captain America: Winter Soldier, but ever since Avengers I haven't taken the Marvel Cinematic Universe serious because of the humor being a crutch for almost every movie. Iron Man 3 was the worst comic book movie I've ever seen, even worse than Jonah Hex for me and that was horrible, Thor: The Dark World was 60% great with the Loki/Thor/Asgard scenes and 40% horrific with the Earth characters and the humor that surrounded them, and the only characters I really cared about in the Guardians of the Galaxy were Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Ronan the Accuser. I was honestly hoping for Chris Pratt's Star-Lord to get pulverized by Ronan's universal weapon because I thought he was so *****ing annoying.

I love TDK trilogy but not every movie in the DC universe has to be in their tone. (and actually TDK has pretty funny parts)
One of the things that I love about Marvel is that they have a clear tone for their movies, but this year they totally surprised us with a more serious one (WS) and other that was an awesome comedy (GOTG)

If they think that "the jokes" are what ruined Green Lantern they are completely wrong.

Perhaps WB just means their movies won't be as centered on humor as some of Marvel's movies are. I'm sure there will be a couple one liners or something throughout the movies.

If this is true it sounds great. distinguish yourself from Marvel for the typical moviegoer who is not big on comic books. Marvel can stick to the comedy but DC should really have more of a serious tone where every action has a reaction/big consequences.

There is a difference between not joking around and no jokes. DC will
definitely put some jokes in it, even The Dark knight Trilogy has some
laugh out loud moments. What we won't expect is a campy film like the severely overrated GOTG.

I didn't think Guardians of the Galaxy was campy. Avengers was a lot more campy. At times, I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was quite serious and really well done. I mentioned before that Rocket Raccoon and Groot stole the movie for me because of how much they represented the hardship and meaning of (Groot's) sacrifice and (Rocket's) not wanting to be put in the role of superhero.

Just throwing this out there, but does this indicate Rogen is in talks for a 'comic relief' Justice League or DC role?

I could totally see a comedic Green Lantern/Flash team up movie from the "This is the End" team starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel. Wait, on second thought, Rogen starring as another "Green" comic book character might be a terrible idea.

  Something tells me Edgar Wright is going to steer clear of comic book movies for a while... While we're on the subject, before the Ryan Reynolds "Lantern" travesty came out, Jack Black was working on a comedic take with Robert Smigel. The great thing about a "Lantern" franchise, if done right, is that the ring could be passed along to different characters and actors, each with their own style. I could see Rogen playing Kyle Rayner.

Can we be honest here? I've seen this accusation on countless times on this site. Aside from 1 line by Cap ("what? are you getting sleep?"), the only person making jokes was Stark. Its part of his eccentric persona, so it shouldn't be a surprise.
And truth be told, when I'm uncomfortable I do 2 things; work on my situation awareness regarding my surrounds & crack jokes. Both are defense mechanisms.

Clearly, the mutated virus of Nolanism is so infectious that the MCCU couldn't even keep the word "Dark" out of the Thor 2 title.

    Yes. I know that. A treatment is different than a screenplay. The problems with MoS were not with the story (which I loved), they were with the pacing and plot, both of which come from Goyer's screenplay, not from the initial treatment.
    This is why Goyer didn't get to write the screenplays for Dark Knight or Dark Knight Rises, and why DC is handing the screenplays for BvS:DoJ and Justice League over to Oscar-winner Chris Terrio.
    Please forgive me if my basic understanding of how films are developed makes me seem like a sheep.

      Terrio will be just as ineffective as nolan was.Just because he is an acclaimed writer doesn't mean he understands or could encapsulate the core essence of these characters.granted MOS dialogue was entirely Goyer's but it was still a shared concept that was develop with nolan.,a template by which didnt work on a universal level.

      Again. Nolan did not write the screenplay for MoS. He helped develop an intitial story treatment, and then left for Paramount to work on Interstellar, leaving the comic book movie world behind completely. Terrio is writing the screenplays for BvS and Justice League. Goyer's involvement with BvS and Justice League will be similar to his involvement with Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises (ie he'll get a story credit, but most likely not a screenplay credit).
      I'm assuming you understand the difference between a story treatment and a finished screenplay? You also understand the difference between story and plot?
      I've said this before, and I'll say it again in case you're not reading carefully. The problem with MoS wasn't the story or the template or the core essence. In my opinion, MoS got all of this 100% right. The problem was with the pacing and plotting. The dialogue was mostly serviceable, except for some wince-inducing lines. (Lois Lane having to tinkle comes to mind). Wait, on second thought, maybe a "no jokes" policy is a good strategy for DC.

Warner Brothers did that because they're casting Ben Affleck, and Ben Affleck may also be doing some writing and directing in the future. Ben Affleck's humor is so bad it's offensive, and so they made this policy so that he doesn't put any of his terrible jokes or humor into the movie. Warner Brothers also wants to get away from weaker looking characters that are slapstick and cheesy. If you really think about it TDK's Joker was really stupid, and they've done Joker much better than that. He blew up a hospital but only after he got everyone out, and Batman should have easily taken him out as he could just get it out of one of Joker's goons, since Joker has so many goons in that movie. That movie was really stupid if you think about it. The previous Batman movie Joker makes a lot more sense if you think about it, and they can do much better than that. Batman villains are psychopaths, career criminals, black market scientists, war mongerers, and serial killers so they want real writing for it. Joker has a dark sense of humor in the comic books, but it's no joking matter. He's very dark, especially in his original personification in the 1940s. Joker is the devil, and he got Harleen Frances Quinzel, M.D., an Arkhum Asylum psychiatrist, to join with him later on to break him out, possibly because he tainted her with her gullible nature and got into her mind or because he had given her money to become a psychiatrist in the first place when she had criminal links with his peers in the past before he became extreme and she was just in criminal circles. She has a Brooklyn accent so she must have grown up in a tough area and has Stockholm syndrome with some possible criminality in her past growing up, and she studied for criminals to understand herself and fix the problems which after being a psychiatrist for so long she saw that as useless and didn't believe in it anymore after Joker talked to her. One of his jokes was blowing up one of Jason Todd's parents in front of him, and then joking around with a crow bar with him with bones sticking out and showing. His jokes were in his viscous schemes such as tying everyone up at an abandoned construction site 100 feet high to strings, and shooting them down with expert aim while Batman had to go save each one as they fell but he couldn't get them all, or when Joker was a clown at a big show and shared his lethal acid gas with a little unsuspecting girl for her birthday she used on her father that killed him when the comic said she had to get lots of psychological help years and decades later. Joker was a great planner with a dark sense of humor in the Batman animated series too which shows the best of Joker, that show had excellent writing. Joker had lots of those vicious jokes in The Dark Knight Returns too. Joker is a very good planner and he matched wits with Batman in the right comics, but not in the Dark Knight movie. That's the problem with Christopher Nolan, whatever is convenient to the plot but is really mindless if you think about it. Batman Begins was excellent, but Christopher Nolan crapped out after Batman Begins and recycled the same ideas but pulled them off much worse in The Dark Knight, and sort of in The Dark Knight Rises where I just didn't buy into the movie but there was lots of intelligent stuff in that with great ideas, there were good things to Nolan's Joker but he could have written that movie a lot better. He put some good thought into Bane, but that version of Batman could have been smarter by keeping up on the game which he didn't do, and he did that in the comic books. In the comics Bane was completely new without a criminal past because he had been learning criminality all of his life being stuck in prison, but the movie Bane, Batman should have kept up on everything to plan against that. In Nolan's movies Batman is always stupid and falls for everyone's schemes, which isn't realistic for anyone with real effectiveness. He also fell for Talia's scheme, which there should have been a way for him to figure out her real identity too, Batman has had so many experiences as a billionaire and is a genius prodigy with an IQ of 190. Verbal humor would make the writers lazy and lose their creativity, but realistic dark humor would do a lot of good. Green Lantern's humor is terrible, and that actor probably got tired of using that humor as they just got lazy with it. I don't know if they're continuing with that Green Lantern, or starting with a new one. By doing Justice League first, audiences will be more attracted to a Green Lantern film. IMO, that Green Lantern movie was good in a lot of ways but they killed off a lot of future canon, and a lot of future plot points where with where DC is going in movies they may start over because they want to bring it up many notches and to get more of a flow with their new formula. I can see them salvaging the previous Green Lantern, but with his characterization and where Green Lantern went in comic books I can see a different Hal Jordan. After losing his sanity Hal Jordan went there, and he didn't return from it. There's mainly Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, and Kyle Rainer. Hal Jordan goes insane and that was a really cool story. A lot of those ideas Warner Brothers can use for DC to get the DC movies to the image they're looking for.
