'Gotham' to feature a different Joker every week?

It's no secret that the Joker will eventually show up in Gotham, which premieres on FOX this September. The show's producers have stated in multiple interviews that the Clown Prince of Crime will be featured in the show, and he's even hinted at in the very first episode.

According to Bleeding Cool, Jon Beavers has been cast as a stand up comedian and has a brief role in the pilot episode. Batman News can confirm that a comedian is part of the first episode. But Bleeding Cool takes it a step further... according to their sources the Gotham producers will be deliberately placing Joker easter eggs in each episode to keep fans guessing.

Basically, every episode in the first season will introduce a character that might be a future Joker, each emphasising aspects of the character’s iconography, a card sharp, a flower seller, a clown, or just a guy with a very big grin.
All relatively unknown actors. All potentially a Joker. But only one of them being the actual Clown Prince Of Crime.

If this is true, perhaps the real Joker will be revealed in the final episode of season one. How do you feel about this news? I like this idea. The Joker's identity has always been a mystery and now they have this Jack The Ripper thing going on with him, where there are so many suspects. Sounds great!

The Joker's origin, unless I've missed something, has always been a mystery. If he is brought into this "before Batman" series, then wouldn't it stand to reason he would be young enough to where his identity would be known by default?

  Isn't this the whole point of this story? There will be many different possibilities so you don't know which one is him so the origin will still be mystery.

  The vat of chemicals IS his back story. When has that never part of it? I can't recall that ever being taken out in my lifetime out side of Nolan's version. But the comics have never strayed from that. The only part that has ever changed is who he was before he became the Red Hood. Zero Year just retold his origin yet again, and it's still the exact same origin it's been for decades. He was the Red Hood, he fell in the vat, badda bing badda doom.

    From the Killing Joke, The Joker says 'sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another" so he doesn't even know. And Zero Year gives us some clues as to it being the Joker but it's never really confirmed because he says he could have swapped and made out as though he fell. I'd rather him not having an origin, that's what was so great about Nolan/Ledger's take on The Clown Price of Crime. Rule Number One: The Joker lies!

I understand it is not canon but the Joker only exists after he falls into a vat of chemicals at the ACE factory, probably around year two of Batman's existance... not sure how this will work.

Personally, I'm waiting to cast judgement on the "age issue" until I see the show. Fans trying to justify the idiocy of a twelve year old Bruce Wayne with grown villains pre-their villain state is becoming annoying

  Well most the villains batman fights are older like penguin fiddler two face and many more the ones that are his age like Catwoman appear to be the same age as Bruce in the trailer so if seems to work out

    Penguin, sure. Riddler and Two-Face have always been depicted as being the same or similar age (Riddler sometimes quite a bit younger).
    I really like this idea of teasing Joker all the time. Except, what I would prefer, but probably won't happen, is for them to NEVER reveal the actual Joker. I would hope that some of the suspected Jokers are Bruce's age as well, to cover their bases.
    This could be a lot of fun and also permeate this sense looming insanity in Gotham. The idea that, like Batman, Joker was the inevitable outcome of Gotham's descent into corruption and lawlessness. Batman had to come about to attempt to restore order and decency (disguised as something dark and terrifying) and Joker had to come about to challenge that order and attempt to push Gotham the rest of the way into madness (while disguised as something amusing and cheerful).
    So, please, show that Joker, like Batman, symbolically could be anyone.

This is a much better idea than just the whole "unsuccessful comedian" bit. Keep the mystery alive! Even Alan Moore was smart enough to leave things wide open by having Joker state "sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another" in The Killing Joke. It's best to leave the history completely ambiguous.

Think this idea has a lot of potential. Definitely a creative approach to the whole Joker identity question. I hope they leave it up to interpretation though and give fans something to discuss/debate.

Does this mean Joker is like almost 20 years older than Batman, much like the Riddler and Penguin? Or will some of the "possible Jokers" be around 12 years old?

There are 2 things that always have to be mainted
1. Batman must never kill... actually he has killed but it was an accident
2. Joker's origin must never be revealed because we fear what we dont underatand so if we understand joker's origin then he wont be as scary...

    I hope they do go the multiple choice route, play it out not for the first season but for the entire run of the series (but only occasionally), and in the final season introduce the Red Hood but it turns out that he's none of the suspects we've seen.... and he turns into the Joker in the final episode.
    It's true that the Red Hood story was the Joker's origin, but the main thing that Batman has never found out (the first Keaton film notwithstanding) is his name. Yes, "Jack Napier" was accepted as his name for a time, even in the comics.... but still.

I would like it better if they DID have different "potential Jokers" but never show which one actually turns out to be the Joker. "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

  Yeah, well they all have to be played by actual people, so that would only work if you never show the Joker after he becomes the Joker.

THE IS FUCKING BRILLIANT.
It's what I hoped they would do. You have to keep the Jokers origin a mystery so in a show that's all about origins, what better way to keep his murkey than this.

  the mystery isn't how he became the joker, it's who he was before he was the joker. Detective Comics 168 told us how the joker was made, but it didn't us who he was before he fell into it. That's the mystery of his origin.

I like this idea very cool, although I always imagined Joker and Bruce bieng the same age or Joker being a little bit younger than Bruce for this show in general I don't really care about the little age difference. Can't wait!

I love this idea, if true the creators are taking the right direction to me at least. I don't mind spicing up the Batman legend but Joker's true identity should never really be known.
We all know his origin (falling into the vat of chemicals) but I'm talking about his identity/past etc.
at least that's my opinion.

There is no way they're introducing the Joker at the end of the first season, unless this is going to be a very short run series.

You could still have a 23 or 24 year old Joker ,and still make it believable ,that's only a 12 to 11 year age difference to the 12 year old Bruce ! the same could apply for all the other Batman villains that might be introduced later on the show!

Regardless of who he was before he became the Joker, in my Gotham, Joker is a product of Batman. Not the other way around. I kind of like this idea of messing with the audience but i don't want to see Joker before Batman appears, certainly not at the end of season 1.

I think it's a very brilliant, very "meta" idea, and a win-win for all: We get each "Joker" being a fragment of the many different personas the Joker alludes to over the years, and we can still get hints of the character without the "real" one appearing before Batman.

This whole idea of "who is the joker" is a really cool and creative take on the clown prince of crime. Through out essentially all of Batman's history, minus of course The Killing Joke and other stories, the Joker's identity has been a big question mark. The idea of introducing iconic Joker characteristics in a random character in each episode (the flowers, the cards, a day job as a clown, a big smile, or even that distinctive laugh) could pose for some fun investigative work on the part of us, the viewers. What would really take the cake would be if at the end of the first season, post credit style even, they show a shadowy figure of the back of a slender looking figure in a dark alley, and as the camera slowly zooms in closer, all we see is the back of said figure's head with nothing more than some tattered white make up on the neck and a grungy green hair dye. Then cut to black.

Since through out all Canon/non-Canon batman stories it has been shown that Bats and Joker are in and around the same age, it could be just downright unsettling seeing a little sociopathic 12 year old turning into the clown we all love. Just a thought.

It will be interesting to see where this show goes after the first season. 2nd and 3rd season maybe even 4th. That's some years away but the show hasn't even started and it sounds and looks so effen cool. I cannot wait!! EAT IT MARVEL!!

It's fine if they wanna toy with us about who the Joker might be, but I think they should wait for a few seasons before introducing him as a main character. I feel like Bruce Wayne should be a little bit grown up before his nemesis is introduced. It would give him greater cause to want to become a crime fighting vigilante.
