Ben Affleck is rarely seen without facial hair and it's a look which is well-suited to Batman as well. Think back to Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's "The Court of Owls" in which the hero was trapped in one of their layers and looked disheveled and beaten down; the character having stubble may be a minor visual addition, but it works for the same reason that "battle damaged" looks do. Seeing as this version of the Dark Knight is older and more experienced, it would make sense, and definitely appeared to be there in that first official image of Affleck suited up as the iconic DC superhero. Many artists have included stubble in Batman's look over the years and it would make this version look a little more rugged than Bale's!

I think with the voice, Affleck doesn't really need a growl...but a deeper, scratchy, husky voice. Make it subtle so that it blends in with the character.

I love Bale's Batman voice. that is brilliant and great. Yes,sometime his voice was wrong. But nothing is perfect. But 90-95% time in the trilogy he did a great work on voice.
And Bale is an academy award (oscar) and golden globe winning artist. an actor. and both collect before he touch 40. He is a great actor. In this era of acting he is no doubt one of the best three actors list (other two depp and dicaprio).
And Nolan's take on DC universe was grounded,serious and realistic. And Snyder's take will be comic book. So you just can't compare both way. but snyder's way also will be successful like Nolan's. The important is success. whatever your take is,that need to successful at the end of the day. But if you look from artistic side then snyder,ben need to work really hard to surpass any batman film. Because nolan is best director of this generation! So surpass him will not be easy. that is why last year ben already said that part.

      if you look Depp's career you find him as a great artist. Yes,i know he waste his talent on working some films. But he did also great work on some films. Charlie and the chocolate factory,public enemies,potc (yes,i know these films are garbage but his acting was brilliant),rango (voice),alice in wonderland and some films are notable works. but my most favorite film is of him public enemies.
      No doubt bale is in the best three actor of this era.

      For someone who used to be so edgy and unafraid of trying something different, Depp has become such a boring and predictable actor. Not one of his performances in any of the films you mentioned are evidence of a great artist. Most of them are solid proof of an actor that just doesn't care about his art any more.

      Actually, Atomic Man's list is pretty solid evidence that Fassender deserves way more respect than you're giving him. Hunger, in particular was very challenging. His performance in 12 Years a Slave competes with Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List for a truly frightening and sadistic but complex villain. He was nominated for an Oscar for it. And before you go off about how he didn't win, Dicaprio has never won an Oscar either. A trophy isn't always the measure of greatness.
      The guy went from action fodder like 300 to Oscar Caliber prestige very quickly, and proves his consistence with every performance.
      Depp, on the other hand, hasn't given a noteworthy performance in years. Same with Pacino.
      Before you bash someone else's quite valid opinion, you might want to revise your own list a bit.
      Great job tossing out the obvious names btw. Brando and Nicholson? why didn't you put Deniro and Hoffman. Why not Peter O'Tool and Kirk Douglas? Humphrey Bogart and Jimmy Cagney maybe? It's easy to mock other people's opinions when you're playing it so safe.
      Fassender is an fantasic, intelligent, fearless actor. Give the guy the props he deserves.
      Back on topic, the cave just wouldn't be the cave without that giant penny.

      Pacino is one of the great actors of his generation. Dicaprio is great too (don't bring up Titanic though. Not an example of one of his better performances). Would I compare Fassbender with him? Totally. Why not? Fassbender has only gotten notice the past 6 years or so, but his work has been very impressive. And daring. If your point is that he needs time to build a larger filmography, fine. But I think he's well on his way. He's on a role right now.
      Honestly, if I made a list of three best actors currently working, I wouldn't put him on it either. Not yet. I just wouldn't dismiss someone who does. That's where I think you're being unfair. Atomic listed some truly great performances and you just waved them off. He makes a solid argument with those. You shouldn't scoff at it.

Actually, it doesn't. Even though Kryptonite damages Kryptonians by exposure, Superman endured from Luthor a LOT more than just the rock. Luthor even blasts him with k-rays that are mortal to humans, but he endures it.

      Remember Superman is no longer the boyscout he used to be.
      Justice League #1 New 52: Superman takes down Batman in a matter of seconds in their first meeting (he takes down Lantern as well). I'm not a true fan of that comic or it's movie counter part (Justice League: War) because they seem to make him arrogant however they show that Superman can take down anyone.
      Man of Steel (2013): This new Superman (the best one in my opinion) is a fusion of both pre-52 and new-52. He displayed human qualities when he destroyed that guy's truck after he poured beer on his face. He didn't lack the conviction to do what's necessary to save people when he snapped Zod's neck. I'm sure he won't do that to Batman in 2016 but I'm sure he will go all out simply to immobilize him. Obviously Batman will go all out too hopefully using his knowledge to take down Superman.
      The Dark Knight Returns: It may be an AMAZING Batman story, however they BUTCHERED Superman by making him a Government Puppet and holding back with his weaker powers. As much as people like it... This story is non-canon!

      I think that judging by the so called comic con teaser description that batman will see superman as a threat due to the events in metropolis and set out to take him down for the greater good perhaps convinced by luthor who is rumoured to be trying to convince metropolis that superman is a menace. I reckon Bats and Supes come to blows in Gotham as batman attempts to fight him to protect Gotham and the world from a potentially loose cannon and maybe supes will be manipulated red kryptonite style? by lex and then bats and supes will have to team up to take him down. I wonder if lex is going to be partnering with anyone else though... to need bats and superman and wonder woman together then you need a bigger threat than luthor... braniac maybe...

      So what if Clark broke some guy's freaking truck? In Superman II, he beat the shit out of some bar guy after he beat him up and as a Superman fan, I didn't like TDKR ending. It wasn't even a fair fight. Batman had Green Arrow to help him and he knew Superman would hold back. Plus, Batman didn't win in TDKR. He faked a heart attack. Everyone thought he died. If that's what people call winning a fight then the world is screwed and filled with idiots. I totally agree that TDKR is non-cannon.

  I do love this line, but it doesn't really jive. you see deep down, Batman is a good man. What's his rule, He doesn't kill. Superman in fact doesn't have that rule. Deep down Superman is as capable of being as bad a person as any of his villains. He chooses to not be bad but how many times have we seen him get pushed over that line. There are so many stories where Superman either gives up on he world or he takes it over. Superman is capable of evil. Batman has always been the one incorruptible figure in the DC-verse. He's never into the darkness. No matter how far the Joker has pushed him, he's never given in to it.

    The point of Batman saying that is basically to say he'll fight dirty, for lack of a better term. Superman is good enough and honorable enough that, even though he could kill anyone In a heartbeat, he doesn't only choose not to, but he tends to hold back and kind of meet them at their level. He pulls punches. Batman, however, will not. Short of killing, Batman will do whatever it takes. In fact, in that very issue from the Hush arch, the master stroke to his strategy is to have Catwoman drop Lois Lane off a skyscraper. He knew Clark would snap out of it.
    If the roles were reversed, Clark would never do a thing like that.

I would be perfectly satisfied if they both collapsed in an exhausted heap, having pummeled each other, with a nearly-passing out Batman asking "had enough?" in that attitude-filled way only Batman can. The two start to laugh and then begin talking about whatever it is that eventually brings them together and sows the seeds of the Justice League.

Actually gonna agree with LLuthor, he can't and doesn't need to "defeat" Superman physically. He's mentally superior and that's where they've always complimented each other. So the idea of him schooling Clark at a crime scene or other similar event is appealing. Also, the fighting style definitely needs revamping because I disagree with Josh, the Batman v Bane fight scenes were painful to watch; slow, predictable, choreographed combat that is a clear side effect of the "armored" style Bat suits. The Affleck pic that leaked hints at a more functional Dark Knight Returns style suit, flexible fabric instead of armor, so I'm hoping that means they'll really show Batman at his full, brutal and fast combat effectiveness.

  Berto, there are screne shots from the Hardy/Bale fight with an interview story from Hardy in text. It speaks to how both of them were extremely tired during the filming of the street fight scene. I thought that if they had been more rested, it may have turned out differently. But you have them both throwing blocks to punches or kicks that haven't even started yet. Definitely could have been done better.

    As much as I like TDKR and the trilogy for that matter. I feel that MOS's fights were better coreographed. One of the overlooked gems is Jor El Vs Zod. The way the action is done and the combat moves really makes you believe they are both so precise with their punches/kicks. Jor El is more tactical trying to use quicker more precise punches and blocks whereas Zod is more trying brute force. Zod underestimated Jor El he expected him not to be able to match him in combat because Zod is quite pompous. The sound design in that scene is also really well done. The choral music, the sounds of clanking armour, deep throaty punches impacting the shouts from both men and they take hits. Very cleverly done. I'm looking forward to something special combat wise in Dawn Of Justice.

      Second, Fury was created in the 60s, Waller in the 80s.
      And actually, Batman assembled a group called the Outsiders back in 1983. I'm betting the movie Justice League will mirror that.
      And Marvel copies DC? I guess when DC had a mega event to streamline its universe & continuity to just 1 wasn't being done by Marvel since the 60s.
      This "DC is the originator & Marvel a copier" is more laughable at this point then ridiculous.

In TDKR, didn't he visit Gordon in the hospital once he heard Jim was hospitalized?

The #1 thing Ben Affleck needs to do to beat Christian Bale is LEARN HOW TO ACT. Affleck is a very good Director, but he's a horrible actor. For him, playing Bruce Wayne/Batman, is comparable to a Varsity baseball player pitching in the World Series.

The second thing Affleck needs to do is stop being POLITICAL. Even though it's Batman, people will NOT watch a politically charged and arrogant political hack.

      My problem is when writters force some inconsistency to benefit Batman, like in hush, where a single k-ring allowed Batman to punch Superman effectivelly, where the same Superman took a lot worse and didnt have that effect. This is no preparation, it's a writting tool

      Now kiddo, Since you know so muuuch about the industry, try to remember what happened to Batman in canon, when Max Lord controlled Superman's mind.
      And since you clearly missed my poit, it is that writters often tone down other character's feats and often even inteligence when they have to go against Batman and sometimes eve co-op with him. Characters like Superman, WonderWoman, Flash and GL deserve a lot more than to look dumb while Batman solves a problem so stupid that we as readers have already guessed. Eve Batman deserves more than this, and it pisses me off that fans think its ok for Batman to beat a Superman that didn't do HALF of what he could or what he would.

I really liked Bale's voice in Batman Begins. I heard he lost it a couple times while filming Begins, so maybe that's why he changed it in the next two, maybe it was easier on his voice. Not to be critical, but the change of voice was Bale's choice, not Nolan. Nolan said Bale changed his voice when he came in for his reading.

    Then I guess you're at a loss for words. The 1989 movie had a sparse cave set up. Think about the cave from the 60s series. How much of that equipment can be reduced to a 1/4 of the space needed?
    Even the bunker used in TDK had only what was needed.

      No computers, armory, firing range, table to plan the Hong Kong trip, or suit cage? Yeah everything could be stowed away, but it prevents unnecessary equipment being in the way in the limited space.

i would add to that list bruce's mastery of disguises. although it was briefly used in batman begins (bruce disguised as a homeless dude, outside the court building, standing next to a payphone) it would be cool if they exploit it more prominently in BvS; imagine a random scene at a restaurant, bar, club or whatever filled with people talking to each other, maybe government officials or politicians (apparently there's gonna be some in the film); then their meeting is over and they left and one of them turns out to be actually bruce in disguise, gathering classified intel; nobody recognized him, not even you in the movie theater; that even could give Mr. Afleck a chance to show off his acting skills.

That's what I was thinking, something similar to what GA used in Arrow. It makes sense, here's a multi millionaire who has the know how and the tech to create these gadgets. Yet he chooses to just deepen his voice by lowering it an octave? Why not have a voice modulator fitted inside the cowl? I really do think Bruce/Batman should have a different voice, it doesn't have to be over the top(imo) like Bales, but just a little deeper, huskier, more mysterious. My thinking is that perhaps the reasons they haven't used the modulator is purely down to performance, when you're covered from head to toe in a suit that will no doubt hinder movement, which is key to acting, also while only having your eyes and mouth to express yourself...maybe altering the voice electronically takes away from the performance? That's my thinking anyway, I went as Batman for Halloween a few years ago, and kept the cowl, cape, gloves everything on all night, in various bars...and it was hell! I could barely move my neck, had to lean in weird ways to take a drink. So I can't imagine what it would be like being on set, all day with the heat from lights cameras etc and having to jump off objects and fight in a suit that weighs you down. Props for that.

In 2005 after BB I read somewhere somewhere that the clips holding the cape on in Batman Begins also worked to alter Bruce's voice and add a disembodied quality. If you look closely the shape of these clips is incorporated into the shoulder armor in TDK and TDKR. Nolan isn't a fan of explaining trivial things on screen, maybe they simply cut a scene explaining this early on.

Great read and totally agree with the point on fighting style. As brilliant as Nolan's trilogy was (heaven forbid any negativity be thrown in its direction) the one thing that always frustrated me was the fight sequences lacking the flair that Batman should possess. Sure Bane and the Bat's first round was great to watch but let's face it, the attention was on Tom Hardy being an absolute machine. Any other fight sequences always seemed to be shot at close range and even the team-up with Catwoman on the rooftop was mainly focussed on her than it was the Bat.

I think the reason that we haven't seen the sight of jaw-dropping scrap like the ones in the Arkham game series is down to the simple fact that realistically it would be incredibly difficult to display. We've seen film stars take down baddies by the truck load in the past but none have done so with a few feet of cloth trailing from their back. Like Edna Mode rightfully states: No capes. That is unless Snyder takes the same route as he did with Man of Steel and makes Batman's bit of iconic wardrobe CGI, which could open a world of possibilities as a result.

I'm on the same boat as you man. Loved Nolan's trilogy, while I did have issues with TDKR I still enjoyed it. As soon as I played the Arkham games I thought, this is how he needs to move, show that he's a martial artist, show his strength, agility. Winter Soldier did a great job with evolving Caps style, if they can take that route, I'd be happy. I get that the suit probably hinders movement, and with the cape getting in the way and the cowl perhaps blocking the eyeline, but if they get a great stunt team and fight choreography it can be done. Like you said, maybe using a CGI cape is the way to go in some scenes. I can already imagine how Snyder would use a CGI Bat cape, standing on a building, a top a gargoyle with the blue lightening in the background, cape billowing in the wind and then diving off the roof straight in to a group of criminals would be a great way to introduce Batman in the movie.

Also, considering how Snyder has handled fight scenes in the past (300, Watchmen especially) I just hope we get to see the Bat doing just as much.

It's a comic book movie. Needs more gadgets, vehicles and over the top. What Nolan's great mind didn't understand is that a comic book movie doesn't have to be THAT realistic and grounded. A comic book movie must feel like a comic. I'm not saying making it cheesy, stupid and too unrealistic like Marvel but the same tone as Arrow.

I have no doubt Snyder will do Batman justice, the fight scenes from Watchmen is all the proof I need. Batman does need to lose the "gargling balls" voice though and the stiff movement movement as well. I never got the feel that Batman was agile or athletic in the DKT. I would like to see the detective side of Bruce Wayne as well but I really just want Batman to kick ass unlike the wack fight scenes in the Dark Knight Trilogy

#5 on that list is number one for me. The one thing that every batman film has failed at is portraying him as a detective! the 66 series did a better job at making him the worlds greatest detective than any of the films has. I hope they can bring that part of the bat to the big screen at some point during Afflecks run.

I think they brushed up against his knowledge in Keaton's Batman after he read's the Joker's jacket. "Chemist... Alfred, we're going shopping." And determines that it is a mix of products that cause the joker response.
Kilmer's Bats showed more smarts as Wayne than Bats. He mentally dueled with E.Nigma more than once.
Clooney's was also pretty smart, the execution of those smarts was pretty weak though.
Bale didn't show much detective work at all. He was usually in reaction mode the entire time.
I think the deconstruction of a crime scene would establish his detective smarts and would be in a comfortable manner. We are used to watching CSI, Dexter, and the like where crime scene analysis is easy. Having him stroke his chin while thinking outload like West will come off poorly.
Keep in mind my above critique of the various actors is only to their "detective skills and smarts" it in no way should be used as how I view the films by those actors in those parts in entirety.

Second one: batman prepares, cheats heavily, superman is caught by surprise and batman wins.
This way both get their victories and people will get their Batman v Superman bout as the title promised.

1. Affleck should use a different voice, if for no other reason than his regular voice isn't intimidating at all.

2. I never bought the idea that Bruce could create all his gadgets on his own. That's one reason I'm not a fan of Iron Man. It also makes the character less interesting. Every time he needs something, he can just go invent it. Bat shark-repellant? Part of why Batman is interesting is precisely because he doesn't have superhuman abilities. But being able to create any gadget on your own is like a superpower.

3. While it would be nice to see a Batman who's more of a detective, you risk slowing down the story. Look at Watchman. The scenes with Rorschach playing the detective made the movie feel slow at times. On the other hand, if you did it the way Guy Richtie did in the Sherlock Holmes movies, then it becomes interesting and doesn't ruin the pace.

4. A new fighting style would be great, but viewers aren't stupid. They can tell when someone's doing something with the help of wirework or CGI. After a while, it just looks ridiculous.

5. Batman doesn't need more vehicles. This is not a toy commercial.

6. I'm sure fans will be excited to see Batman defeat Superman. But if it involves Kryptonite, no thanks. One of the smartest things they did for Man of Steel was ban kryptonite from being mentioned.

But the one thing Ben Affleck needs to do to beat Christian Bale's Dark Knight is to convince the audience that this guy really would dress up as a bat and fight crime. Christian Bale, partly because of his own obsessive nature, could actually convince viewers that someone would actually do this. And he also sold people on the idea that he's got a lot of rage and unresolved issues. I just can't see Affleck convincing anyone that's obsessed, driven, and full of anger.
