Gina Carano comments on Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, says she was never up for the role

MMA fighter turned actress Gina Carano has been a fan favorite for the role of Wonder Woman for years. She's attractive, strong, and has the body type that fans are used to seeing in the comic books. Carano has been dating Henry Cavill for some time, but apparently Superman wasn't able to pull any strings and get his girlfriend an audition. "I was never approached, and I don’t know if I was considered", Carano explained to the Toronto Sun.

Carano went on to praise her Fast & Furious 6 co-star Gal Gadot, who will be portraying Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder's 2016 Man of Steel sequel and the newly announced Justice League. Carano also took some time to address the negative fan reaction that surrounded Gadot's casting news:

I think people have an idea what they consider Wonder Woman. I definitely know (Gadot) has been training and there’s so much more that goes into being a strong female character. I think people have their own idea, but I always like the underdog, I’m always rooting for the underdog. If the world says you can’t do something, I couldn’t care less because that’s not how anybody should live their lives.

Last year Gadot began an intense training regimen which includes Kung Fu, kickboxing, swords, and jujutsu.

      I guess the message of "hope" doesn't resonate very well when your lead character 1) lets his father die, despite being fully capable of saving him, and 2) kills the bad guy by snapping his neck in front of the audience. And before you tell me he had no choice: this is a movie. They could've written it in a different way that didn't end with Supes having the blood of multiple people on his hands.

      I understand the logic of Superman preventing what could've been a worse situation at the expense of collateral damage but I was just trying to explain the point of view of many that he was responsible, whether directly or indirectly, of a lot of the destruction and loss of lives while fighting Zod. The point of him not being a fully developed Superman has been made and that's why he didn't take the fight elsewhere, which I can get behind. But, at the same time, if you were fighting someone, wouldn't you want to get them as far away from your home as possible?
      Regarding Batman, we won't know what the purpose of him being in the movie is until we see it so I was just going off the idea that is prevalent in the comics where the idea of superpowered beings that kill (albeit fellow Kryptonians) still poses a threat to mankind and he has taken it upon himself to investigate and find ways to neutralize it. Also, I meant addressing the fact Kal killed Zod in the sequel meaning we'll probably see Kal dealing with lingering remorse/grief because he had to kill Zod and what better way to add to that than bring in Batman and his strict no killing policy.
      I'm not sure if there was something released stating what you suggested but I'd be interested in seeing your take as well. Heck, just seeing Supes and Bats in a movie together is enough for me lol.

      Problem is he hardly tried to minimize the casualties. He didn't toss anybody out of the city. He didn't try and take the fight elsewhere. He just knocked over buildings with no attention spared at all to the collateral damage.

      You didn't make those points. Killing Zod, I have no issue with. Superman is in situations beyond our moral judgment sometimes, and he's killed Zod before. I didn't like the tornadocide either, though. The Lois thing, I could go either way on. They're not really taking their time with that, possibly because of the desire for a cinematic universe. Maybe they'd rather skip that and focus elsewhere on that relationship.

People always think looks are more important than anything even in what are essentially action movies. That's why we get mostly garbage lightsaber battles in Star Wars. That's also why nobody's watching Keanu Reaves crappy ass martial arts movies. He's not a martial artist; he only thought he played one in the Matrix Trilogy. Everyone's tired of watching that fake ass "she's training hard for the role" bullshit that you're spouting off about. Who wants to go see Tony Jaa do the awesome shit he does and then have to watch Keanu fucking Reeves convince himself he knows Kung Fu at their expense? Wonder Woman is a warrior. Her martial skills should be paramount. While I don't particularly like Carano as an actress or the way she looks, she has a helluva lot better skills than that no brand name bitch they picked. And Ben Afflack should've already informed you on how much they screwed up the casting on this one.

    Disagree with abandon until your hair falls out. CGI is tired and overused. Of course the actors from Snyder movies weren't martial artists. That's WHY the combat scenes were sub par. Fortunately, the stories (in most cases) were interesting enough to gloss that over. Over time however it becomes increasingly difficult to suspend disbelief with Matrix style choreography performed by glaringly obvious scrubs. It's like watching Sandra Bullock's Gravity, while actually knowing something about orbital mechanics. The pretty sights and sounds are wonderful, but at critical points in the movie you're groaning in your chair at the ridiculousness on the screen. I have no doubt movie watchers know how to pick and choose. It's Hollywood that I have serious doubts about shoveling anything other than crap down the public throats. And I'll voice that opinion liberally. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, too damn bad. Just go spend more of your hard earned money on garbage until you feel better.

  My point was that people can surprise you. Casting directors see things in auditions that we don't. Heath Ledger is a perfect example of that - everyone went ape when he was cast, but he was phenomenal. The producers chose Gal based on her audition, and they have the most to lose, so I trust they chose her with good reason.

She definitely has the WW look. Really disappointed she couldn't be casted. If she went through the same training regimen Gal's going through she would be a superior WW in every way. She has the sharp features, the eyes, and a confident voice. F*ck, now I'm sad.
I'm sure Gal Gadot will be able to pull it through, but I fear that her accent won't help her deliver impactful dialogue (an issue that Jesse Eisenberg might have with his timid voice) BUT HEY, they're actors. Blow us away guys!

  I wouldn't worry about her voice/accent. They likely have her working with a voice trainer to get the accent they want her to have. She likely wont have an Israeli accent in the movie. Also, with voiceover work after filming, they will be able to get her pronunciation to where they want it.

I'm kind of baffled by this love for Jaime when she's actually very slender. Perhaps not quite as much as Gal, but she definitely doesn't that Amazonian muscle...why is she so much preferred over Gal?
Personally, I think Gal is going to bring a much needed exoticism to Diana. Looking forward to her performance. She was obviously picked for a reason.

    I was speaking strictly from a body standpoint, so many people condemn Gal's thinness and approve of Jaime when her body is hardly different at all. But in terms of acting, I would not say that Jaime has any more to recommend her than Gal does. Her role as Sif in the Thor movies is very minor - another reason I don't understand the love for her.
    I also personally disagree that Jaime has the looks. I prefer Wonder Woman to have a stronger exotic look which Gal captures perfectly. I can see why others may prefer Jaime's face, however.

      I'm not stating a personal opinion on her qualifications; I'm simply theorizing as to why people like her better than Gadot. The OP said "She was born to play WW", and it seems like the majority agree. If you wanna do something completely different, then yeah, Gadot is almost the exact opposite of classic Diana. But people were expecting something closer to the source material, and although Alexander's frame may be just as slender, at least her face is closer to WW's comic book appearance.

I liked Gina's comments about going for the underdog. Recently people have been scratching their head at the Ray Fisher casting and of course Gal because they don't necessarily have movie experience. But I think you have to give these individuals a chance. So far I was highly impressed with Snyder's casting choices for Man of Steel and I think he's doing fine for Man of Steel 2 as well. :)

Agreed. We don't know the plot or the characterizations so why not just sit back and enjoy the ride? Sometimes fan speculation includes too much personal preference and it can ruin the experience and anticipation for these movies. To me, the fact they're making a SupesVsBats and JL movie is phenomenal news. I wouldn't have ever guessed that they would bring a live action version of each to the screen when I was a kid. Now we get both and it's enough cause, for me at least, for excitement and optimism.

Very true, they deserve a chance. Ray Fisher is a mainly a stage actor, so he does have acting experience, and while Gal Gadot doesn't showcase much on American soil, her acting experience on TV and movies in her hometown of Israel shouldn't be discounted.

Ray Fisher is a trained theater actor on Broadway. Anyone questioning if he can act cannot be serious. He also looks very built, which makes me believe the action parts of the role won't be out of his grasp either.

Gina Carano is awesome! But I swear, Gal Gadot looks like she could her ass. Gina's got more muscles and a thicker frame, but I think Gadot's got the screen presence and the confidence, that a live-action Wonder Woman should have. I'm sure that's why Zack Snyder cast her. And Gal's a lot closer to that 6'0 mark, than Gina is.

  Don't really care about physique. It can be fixed with an armored look similar to Faora. What I care about is acting and even though Gal Gadot doesn't convince me as an actress...she is light years ahead of Gina. Gina just doesn't have what it takes to act...it would have been bad if she was cast as Wonder Woman..still, Gal isn't a top tier actress herself either but at least she has her moments so we'll just have to wait and see.

      You couldn't be more wrong. First of all, let me answer your condescending question. She wasn't great in the Fast and the Furious movies, she wasn't bad either. She had good scenes and she had some choppy scenes. However, it was minor role in 3 movies only..so I would be pretty stupid if I labeled her as a good actress or a bad actress. Hence the "she doesn't convince me" part. If you read carefully, you can see I never said she was a bad actress...or a good actress for that matter. As for physical traits, I don't care much about her physique..it can be fixed with an armored look. That being said, there was one thing I loved about Gal and one thing I hated and these two are just personal preferences that will not influence whether or not she is a good Wonder Woman: What I hated was the fact that she doesn't have blue eyes. I would have preferred if she had natural blue eyes...I did not want contacts or brown eyes/green eyes(As stated before..this is just a preference). What I loved ironically, (Because of your childish question, "Was her accent not American enough for you?") was the fact that she does NOT have an American accent..her tone of voice and accent are perfect for Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman isn't American..I did not want an American accent on her. I could not have picked a better accent for her than Gal's.. it's perfect.

However, I can definitely see why Gal's physique bothers some people, it's no where near Wonder Woman's physique but fortunately for me..it doesn't bother me. Gal Gadot earned the role through her AUDITIONS. Her and Zack Snyder will get to define the character, for all the idiots out there that think that Wonder Woman is all about how big her ass and tits are!

    There's this other neat thing about the Internet: it LIES. Did you know that, according to the Internet, Jackie Chan is 5' 10"? And have you seen pictures of Gina Carano standing next to men, & being close to their height, & Gal Gadot being shorter? Yes, the Internet is *wonderful*, especially with all those people who throw the words "ass" & "tits" & "auditions" at people who never mentioned or questioned them. And "Her & Zack [sic]" do not get to define a character that has been defined since 1941. So, you childish jackass, it is YOU who are WRONG.

Gadot and Carano were in a movie scene together. Gal's taller....deal with it. Zack Snyder and Gal Gadot will indeed be defining the Wonder Woman character for the people that don't read comic books but watch comic book movies (which is a lot of people).....so again, deal with it. #youjustgotserved #batmanalwayswins

The only reason I agree is because she's dating Cavill. Not a good idea to hire a girlfriend who could possibly be a bitter ex by the time the 3rd film in your planned series comes around.

She's a class act, being in Gadot's corner like this, especially since she certainly *looks* as though she would make a far better Wonder Woman.

There's no question she has the right look. But unfortunately, she's not a very good actress, which is mainly because of her lack of experience. I also suspect that her relationship with Henry Cavill might've worked against her. Maybe the producers and the studio were worried that if she and Cavill ever broke up, which I believe they did once, they wouldn't be able to work together in any Justice League movies. Lastly, don't assume that Carano is telling the truth. Maybe she was considered for the role, but doesn't want people to think that or else they might not accept Gal Gadot as WW.

You have a great point. If it's a toss between an ex-MMA fighter and an ex catwalk model, the whole "we need a bona fide actress" has already been tossed out of the window and the MMA fighter at least knows how to fight.
